Great Nugget Ice Maker that is a little noisy

I love nugget ice. The GE Opal 1.0 makes nugget ice, and it makes it fast. Within 20 minutes of setup and powering up the ice maker, it started making ice and within a few hours, the ice storage bin was nearly full. The ice maker comes with a refillable side tank that holds about a gallon of water, so you do not have to constantly refill the machine with fresh water. It also comes with a small ice scoop that conveniently stores in slots in the ice storage bin. The flip-top lid is nice and makes it easy to get to the ice. The ice maker with the side tank does take up a fair amount of counter space, so we had to make room for it. It is also fairly noisy. It makes a low (but noticeable) humming noise when it is making ice. It will stop after a while, but anytime that you open the lid and it is powered on, it will start making ice again and the hum will restart. We have started making ice when no one is home and powering off the ice maker when we get home from work. The ice will stay frozen for 8 to 12 hours even if the ice maker is powered off. It also requires a weekly cleaning/sanitization cycle, where you fill the machine with water and a teaspoon of bleach, that takes about thirty minutes to perform. It requires a monthly descaling cycle with a vinegar and water mixture that takes about 18 hours to perform. Aside from the noise and the frequent cleaning/descaling, the GE Opal 1.0 ice maker with the side tank is a good maker of great tasting, chewable nugget ice that I love.

The unit was too noisy. I had to stick magnets on the right side of the unit to keep the humming to a minimum. The cycle when the lid was open would melt the ice and rebuild all the ice, causing the unit to run for four to five hours. I used dead water and the quality of the ice was good, but this unit is definitely not worth $519. Nor was it worth $379 on sale when I bought it. Returned, saved money, I just pick up ice from the ice store now. Less expensive.

This ice maker made fantastic ice until it didn't. I owned it 19 days before it completely stopped making ice. It will now only go into the defrost cycle and will not produce any ice. Because it's over 14 days Best Buy refuses to help me.

If the ice maker is going into Defrost mode and there are no audible sounds indicating that the auger is frozen, it’s highly likely that the air vents are blocked. Make sure that there is a minimum of 3 inches clearance on the back and sides of the unit to ensure proper airflow. If airflow is constricted, the machine will not product ice normally. If this doesn’t help, we recommend consulting the Troubleshooting section on page 11 of your Owner’s Manual (located in the Features tab of the Best Buy product page). If the issues persist, please consult your Warranty on page 12 of the Owner’s Manual for exchange details.

We know these issues with your Opal must be concerning, and we want to assist. If it may be helpful, we have information on what noises the unit may make as well as troubleshooting information on page 12 of the manual; that manual can be viewed on our GE Appliances website when you look up the model number and go to the product page. You can also try resetting the ice maker by unplugging the unit for 3 to 4 hours; a reset can often resolve an issue. If you continue to have trouble, please send us a private message over our GE Appliances social media (such as Facebook or Instagram) with a copy of this review and your contact information. With that information, we can certainly look into your situation further. -Sarah@GEAppliances

Buyer beware This has been a great ice machine. But less than a year later it breaks down. For $400+ this should have lasted longer. Rather buy a cheap one.

Loved this ice machine so much! However, it went out and just broke out of nowhere 2 days after the return date. Bought it in Nov and it only lasted less than three months. Please get the Best Buy protection or else you’d be stuck with a broken ice machine like us. 1.5 star rating

We want to help with your Opal's ice production rate, leaking, and sounds. This model makes about 1.1-1.3 lbs of ice per hour when the water used is 60°F and the ambient temp of the room is 70°F. For leaking, we recommend ensuring that the side tank is properly attached. As for normal sounds you'll hear, that can be found on page 11 in the Use and Care manual. The manual can be found on Best Buy's product page under the Features tab. If you have further questions, please send us a private message via Facebook, Instagram, X, or TikTok with your contact information, complete model/serial numbers, and a copy of this review.

The nugget ice is the best! We are sorry to hear you are having issues. If the water well is filled to the upper fill line and no ice is being produced, please perform this simple test: 1. Please start the Opal and switch to cleaning mode. Don't forget to detach the side tank. 2. Remove the screen/filter at the bottom corner of the reservoir, exposing the small white rubber inlet used for water circulation. 3. Make certain that the Opal is not connected to the phone app and that the water well is filled to the upper fill line with distilled water. 4. Remove the ice bin and press the button to see if the Opal pumps water. This could take up to 5 minutes to start. 5. Plug the small inlet with your finger for 10-15 seconds to create a vacuum within the pump/circulation system. 6. Release the plug and wait a minute or until you see water movement. 7. If you do not see a change, you may want to repeat these steps a couple of times. Note: If you see water movement, please switch to ice mode and run for 30 minutes. **You may also need to prime your pump so try using a Turkey Baster/Injector and gently fill the hose that doesn't go to the side tank with water, and then restart the machine. If you continue to have issues, please reach out to the Opal team directly by calling 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8:00-8:00 EST.

I am giving one star based on Customer Service because the Ice Maker is actually functioning well at this time. I contacted GE Customer Service about missing parts, specifically the Side Tank Clip and Ice Scoop. I was promptly informed that I would have to contact Best Buy about it or purchase the missing parts from a third party supplier at my own expense as they do not carry replacement parts for their appliances. That is absolute crap and I can say that I will no longer purchase GE appliances.

We are sorry for the issues you've had and understand how upsetting this would be for you and your family. We will share your feedback with our team. There are several things that can be the cause of these issues. We need to be sure there is 3 inches of clearances on all sides to help with air flow and to allow the warm air to vent away from the unit. If you'd like to reach out to the Opal Support team, they can be reached by calling 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST.

Love having chewy ice!

I have been using the GE Opal countertop ice maker for a week or so and have had mostly positive thoughts and feelings about it. The first thing to note is that this unit is relatively large and will take up a considerable amount of space on your countertop. Unfortunately, because of the height, it will not fit under my upper cabinets (it's about a half inch too tall...ugh!) so I have had to set it up in a not so ideal location outside of the kitchen. That is really the only beef I have though. Setup is simple and the instruction manual is very clear and concise. The included side tank (which can be placed on either side) is a definite must-have. While you can use the unit without it, to add water you have to remove the ice bucket which is just a bit inconvenient. With the side tank, there is no need to do so, and the machine can make a ton of ice before needing to refill the tank. Once I got everything put where I wanted, I had the first nuggets of wonderful chewy ice within about 20 minutes. Since then, I have basically let it run nonstop. There is an automatic shutoff when the ice bin gets full or you need to add water. As melting occurs, the water drips into the holding tank to be reused. If there is enough melting (which actually seems minimal to me), the ice level will drop and the machine will kick back on so you always have a full container. Also, if you don't interact with the machine, it will pause making ice after about eight hours until you open the top door or press a button. It is relatively quiet during operation and I would estimate you can go from a n empty to full ice bin in about 3-4 hours. For a party last weekend, I was afraid there wouldn't be enough ice and the recovery time would be too long to keep up with demand, so I emptied the ice a few times into a bucket and kept it in the freezer so the machine could keep working. All of my guests loved having chewy nugget ice in their drinks on an unseasonably warm fall day. I no longer use the crushed ice function on my refrigerator, instead opting to use the ice made by the Opal all of the time. It's a winner.

You know the kind of ice this thing makes - the perfect, crunchy nugget ice that we all love and crave. I love having fresh ice on hand, as well as saving the freezer space for other food rather than ice trays or a big ice maker. I have been through a few ice makers over the years, but this is my favorite one so far. At the point of turning the machine on with room temperature water, it takes around 15 minutes to get a fresh batch. The ice melts over time and that melted water is recirculated to remake ice cubes, so there is pretty consistently a full container of ice. There are also a few model choices and accessories, including bluetooth capability and/or an XL water tank.
For all of its pros, there are a few cons. It is a little big/bulky and takes up quite a bit of counter space, so be sure you measure for it. The white LED light is quite bright as well, and tends to light up the area at night. It can sometimes also be a little noisy, but that is fairly normal for automatic ice makers. Other than that, it is a solid GE appliance that I would recommend to a friend.

We absolutely love this OPAL 1.0 Nugget Ice Maker by GE! It has become a staple at our lake house! We plugged it in and forgot about it. When we came back 30 minutes later, ice was sitting in the reservoir, ready to use. we threw away the first couple batches, but once we could use it, my kids were in heaven!. The side tank is easy to fill in the sink and holds quite a bit of water. One of my favorite features about this GE Nugget ice maker is that it will recirculate the melted ice, back into the reservoir so it doesn't get gross and hard. It also automatically knows when to make more ice, so no need to push buttons when it gets low!
I have not noticed it being especially noisy when making ice, but I read that is some complaints from others. We try and fill the side tank everyday when we are at the lake, because we go through it pretty often.
I would highly recommend this product if you love ice and your freezer either doesn't make ice, or doesn't make enough. it is well worth the money!
