My product is already making loud noises when it try’s to make ice and it sometimes won’t even make ice until I open up the door and it activates the “Making ice” icon . Honestly worst 500$ I’ve ever spent. Just a bad experience.

If You Love Ice, You'll Love This Ice Maker!

How much do you like ice? Does every drink need to be frosty cold, even in the winter? Can you not stand the thought of your beverage becoming lukewarm? Maybe you’re a cruncher. Do you like that tiny “good ice” from certain drive-throughs, perfect for cooling drinks and just tossing back like a snack? Are you tired of filling a cube tray and spilling it on the way to the freezer to carefully place it just to first wait overnight to freeze? Or maybe your fridge can already dispense ice, but it’s not that great at it. If ANY of the above items described pertains to you, and if you have abundant counter space, then maybe you’ll be interested in the GE Profile OPAL 1.0 with side tank! I’m definitely a cold water guy. I’ve always got a large water bottle at my desk that follows me around the house and it MUST be cold. The OPAL 1.0 is a game changer for me and I love nearly everything about it! Upon looking at the behemoth of a box that contains the Opal with side tank, you may be worried that you’ve made a mistake and purchased some sort of commercial ice maker. You’d be right for thinking that! The box is HEAVY – so much so part of the box inserts is just a plank of wood to protect the machine. Unpacking the box isn’t as daunting – it’s just packaged very well. The machine itself is still heavy though so it’s not exactly something I’d call portable. It's also large. This is designed to fit on your countertop, but I’d consider the dimensions of it before purchasing. And when taking that into consideration also remember you need a bit of room on the sides and rear of the machine as that’s where the fans and ventilation live – you don’t want those blocked. This is easily the largest kitchen countertop appliance I have. It dwarfs my toaster oven, espresso machine, and everything else, including my stand mixer! Apart from just sheer size, it’s a very nice looking, sleek machine that fits in nicely though. As for initial assembly, it is a piece of cake. Remove the packing materials and give it a clean – the manual suggests a cleaning cycle with bleach, but if I’m being honest, I just hand washed what I could and wiped the interior down well. Attaching the side tank is as easy as connecting tube line and placing the machine and side tank the included stand. From that point, fill it up, plug it in, and you’re making ice! You will be making ice in ten minutes as the box suggests – it just won’t be enough ice for a full glass. However, after you’ve given it just a few hours, you’ll be filled with seemingly never-ending ice nuggets. The OPAL 1.0 holds quite a bit of water even without the side tank attached and, as the ice inside slowly melts, that melted water is deposited back into the internal water reservoir to be used as more future ice! Yes, this does mean that the OPAL does not technically keep your ice cold as it is not a freezer. However, it is so well insulated that melting ice was something I never observed. The whole ice basket is removable, and it comes with a very tiny but effective scoop that conveniently lives inside the ice basket. The side tank holds about a half-gallon of water and is filled by removing the side-tank, flipping it over and unscrewing the gravity valve cap and filling it up. The shape of the side tank, with its curved top matching the slope of the ice maker itself is visually appealing but did make filling it slightly awkward. You’ll want to use filtered water if you can here. Tap water will just have more minerals in it causing you to have to run a descaling cleaning cycle sooner than later. With heavy ice consumption the side tank gave us roughly five or so days of ice before needing to be refilled. My only other minor gripe with the OPAL 1.0, apart from the size, is that it’s a bit loud when making ice. This shouldn’t come as a complete shock – it is after all acting like a mini refrigeration unit. Condenser coils and whatever goes into cooling water below its freezing point make noise. The fans make noise. The falling ice cubes into the basket are honestly the quietest part. Luckily if you can ignore the noises of a standard freezer/fridge, you’ll ignore the second set of noises that come from here with time, too. The ice maker is not always in constant operation either. It does go into standby either when it has hit its ice basket capacity, or it has not been open in several hours. In either case, opening it and scooping out some ice will instantly start the machine up again. And, while during those downtimes your ice will slowly start to melt, as mentioned it is so well insulated, you’ll barely notice. That said, the longest I think I’ve gone without someone in my house opening it up to grab more ice was overnight. As for the ice itself, the OPAL 1.0 makes tiny little nugget ice. Think Sonic Drive-Thru type of ice. It’s small cylindrical bits of ice. Many folks out there like straight up chewing on this type of ice. While I myself am not an ice cruncher, I have found myself grabbing a small amount of ice and sucking on them, like some sort of tasteless but cold jolly rancher. The sound of a full glass filled with tiny ice swirling from their pool within my drink is something I’ve come to really be satisfied by. Ultimately the cost and size of the machine will need to be weighed out against your level of want for a constant supply of ice. My Samsung fridge has an icemaker in it, but I never liked its crescent shaped cubes that slowly dispersed and never had enough to go around my household. Even my partner, while skeptical when she came home from work to find this taking up valuable countertop space was easily converted into a loyal lover of nugget ice and the OPAL 1.0 within minutes. For us, this has become the most treasured item in our kitchen and something that even our friends have commented on favorably!

GE profile Opal 1.0 came in a large box that was mostly destroyed by the carrier. There was stuff leaking on the outside which had me concerned however upon unboxing everything was perfectly fine. The set up is really easy except make sure you are buy a sick because you need to drain the actual 40 lb unit after cleaning. I made a big mess because there is no valve to the tank and it’s gravity fed so good luck if it’s full. The good news is this ice maker is totally worth the hassle. Nugget ice is made by a bunch of compacted ice flakes so production is fast on this thing. You will literally be able to have ice after 20 min. And this thing makes a lot of ice I’m not sure the specs but I want to say up to 44lbs a day that’s crazy! We have a family of 3 and use all day and never run out. This is a large ice maker you will need counter space to accommodate this. It’s tall and bulky and we did not pipe it in to our water supply we use the side tank only which needs a refill once a day. I feel so spoiled having this thing but can’t imagine life without it now. I love the nugget ice and this ice machine. For sure one of my favorite small appliances in the kitchen. Great for water or cocktails and everything in between. The only downsides are it’s a little loud and the maintenance of cleaning it. There is a replaceable filter inside the tank as well so maintenance isn’t free. I would recommend to anyone who loves nugget ice and wants an ice machine that can keep up with your families ice demand.

Best home nugget ice maker so far

As a house of six with 4 daughters who all play sports we are constantly short on ice in our house. We have had or used 3 other different countertop ice makers and by far this one has been the fastest and closest to that restaurant style nugget ice my family loves from Chick-fil-A. First thing I noticed when it was delivered was just how big it was compared to our other ones. I had to move multiple other items around on the counter in our kitchen to make room for it. Make sure you have the room for it as it will take up a good bit of counter space for the ice maker itself and also the additional side water tank if you get and use it. After running a quick cleaning cycle I filled up the reservoir in the unit and the side tank and turned it on and after about 10 minutes or so it started to drop ice and after a few hours the basket was full with perfectly created nuggets. The sensor will turn off the ice making once the basket fills up but immediately turns on when the ice is no longer blocking the sensor. My other countertop ice makers would take much longer to reset and then turn back on. If you love the restaurant style nugget ice and have the counter space for this it is the best countertop nugget ice maker you can get. So far our family and friends have been very impressed and looking forward to our next get together to really put it through it's paces.

Pretty impressed with this ice maker. It makes ice quickly and while it does hum, it’s not too loud. It started making ice in about 10 mins and completely filled the ice bin in 3 hours and 45mins. See timed pictures. Compare that to a standard ice cube tray a regular freezer takes 3-4 hours – Pretty impressive! The bin and unit are well insulated and do a great job keeping the ice cold even when turned off for the evening. There was still lots of ice over 12 hours later the next morning. (see pics). We have hard water, so the bin retains a bit of white residue, but it’s easy to clean. The ice still tasted great. From a initial startup perspective – it’s very easy (note you need a teaspoon of standard bleach for initial startup). It took about 30 mins to run through the initial start up of cleaning and then flushing it 3 times, so plan for 30 mins prior to using it for ice for the 1st time. The little scooper is nice and has 2 slots to put it in the ice bucket, but it’s a little tough to get it back into those slots once the ice bucket is full. I just tossed it on top. It’s compact and does fit under standard counter cabinets, but it does take up some room for sure. Especially if you use the side water tank.

The fridge I have now does not make a lot of ice quickly to store for large gatherings. This solved my problem and also makes the perfect size ice pebbles for crunching :) Simply clean before the first run. Then fill it up as instructions say (there are two fill lines depending on if you use the additional side tank or not) and turn it on. Ice starts making and you results within 10 minutes. It is well insulated and keeps the ice from melting quickly, but it isn't meant to replace your freezer. You will still need to transfer the ice to a freezer to keep it cold, you just won't have to do it very quickly after it is made. Removable basket helps to remove the ice from the machine and there is a clear scope that also comes with it. As for size, the unit just does fit under my cabinets and fits fine on the countertop. Noise level is about the same as my fridge so I hardly noticed it was running until ice dropped. Unit is a pretty simple, but sturdy design that allows it to blend in with your other appliances. This is going to be very useful to me and my family in the upcoming holiday season. Iced drinks for all!

As a satisfied owner of the GE Profile Opal 1.0 Nugget Ice Maker, I can confidently say that it truly lives up to its reputation as the gold standard for home ice makers. From the moment I received the product, I noticed that while the box was quite large, the ice maker itself was well-packaged and easy to handle, weighing about 40 lbs. It's heavy-duty yet manageable for a single person to lift and move around. Setting up the ice maker took about an hour and a half including assembly, setup, and cleaning. After unpacking, I assembled the side tank, which can be attached to either the left or right side of the ice maker. The clip provided ensures a secure connection between the ice maker and side tank. Additionally, there is a hose that clips into the fill hose attached to the ice maker. Once assembled, the ice maker with the side tank measures approximately 17.25 inches in length, 16.75 inches in height, and 13 inches in width. I found it to be a perfect fit for the corner of my kitchen island or alternatively under my cabinets with a few inches of clearance. Visually, the GE Opal is an attractive appliance, showcasing a sleek design with a combination of metal, black, and clear plastic components. It gives a sense of refined quality and attention to the details that matter. Before starting to use the ice maker, I thoroughly washed the side tank, ice bin, and scoop with soap and warm water. The ice maker features four top lights indicating various functions: making ice, add water, defrost, and clean. To initiate the cleaning process, I held down the clean button for a couple of seconds upon powering it on. While the instructions suggest using bleach and water for sanitization, I opted for vinegar instead. The clean cycle takes about 3 minutes to complete. Following this, I filled the ice maker completely with filtered water from my faucet and repeated the clean cycle again. I repeated this series of steps to ensure I had cleaned all of the vinegar from the clean cycle. Finally, I filled it up with water one more time and proceeded to make ice. I was pleasantly surprised by the ice production capacity of the GE Opal. After approximately one hour and 20 minutes, I had a decent amount of ice ready for use. Once the ice bin filled up, I never had to worry about running out of ice. One notable advantage of this ice maker is its ability to keep the ice cold, preventing it from melting quickly like some other models I've owned in the past. The top door opens upward, and although I accidentally let it slam shut a few times, there was no rattling, and it felt sturdy and well-built. I did see some styrofoam encased in the door that helped dampen the sound. While I didn't personally witness the defrost function in action, it is designed to detect any freezing inside the machine and automatically initiate the defrost cycle. The frequency of cleaning the ice maker will depend on the hardness of the water in your area. In my case, it requires cleaning every 2 to 3 weeks, but some regions might only require descaling every 2 to 3 months. Considering my household of four individuals with three of us having a big appetite for ice, this ice maker met our needs effortlessly. Despite initially appearing small, the ice bin proved to be adequate in its capacity and it's fill rate of a little over one pound per hour. The inclusion of a clever half-circle shaped slot in the ice bin for holding the ice scoop was a thoughtful design choice. The ice produced by the Opal resembles the soft and chewable nugget ice found at popular fast food spots, although it does tend to melt faster than standard ice. The side tank included with the ice maker is an absolute necessity. With a capacity of ¾ of a gallon, it lasted approximately two days before requiring a refill. Unlike other ice makers that demand frequent reservoir refills, the side tank is convenient, mess-free, and simple to attach. I choose to keep the ice maker running 24 hours a day and found that it generated a noise level slightly louder than my refrigerator. However, the noise remained confined to the kitchen, and it didn't disrupt my sleep even when I stayed in the living room. Overall, the GE Profile Opal 1.0 Nugget Ice Maker ticked most of the boxes on my wishlist. I love the nugget ice it produces, as I have a habit of chewing on ice at home. It consistently delivers an ample ice supply for my entire family throughout the day. In terms of maintenance, it’s easy to clean, occupies minimal space, and operates quietly. It has become an impressive and necessary addition to our kitchen, preferred by my entire family over the ice maker in our fridge. The only minor drawback I encountered was the faster melt rate of the ice, although this is a characteristic of nugget ice in general. Additionally, a slightly larger ice bin would be a welcome improvement, but it would naturally require more counter space. I would, however, caution against relying on this ice maker for larger gatherings or households exceeding five individuals, as it may struggle to meet the demand in such cases. In conclusion, I highly recommend the GE Profile Opal 1.0 Nugget Ice Maker for anyone in search of a reliable, daily-use ice maker, a supplementary option for hosting guests, or for smaller gatherings. Its performance, ease of use, compactness, and appealing design make it an excellent investment for ice enthusiasts like myself.

Love The ice it is just right for snacking or drinks, Easy fill is a plus. It is a bit time consuming to clean and a lot more cleaning involved. It does take longer to make ice than it says and it does make loud popping sounds when it is making ice. That is why I did not give it 5 stars. A little pricey to be so loud but the ice it good lol I only use filtered water in my tank as well but it does have the option to hook to your water supply.

I have wanted one of these for the loooooongest time and let me tell you it was worth the wait. Setting up was a bit of challenge, mainly cause I hooked up the wrong hose (there’s 2 back there, one for the side tank and the other is a drain hose) but once I cleaned up all the leaking water it went well. Make sure you run the clean cycle with some bleach to sanitize before you start making ice and then rinse it 3 times (book says 2 but I could still smell bleach in there so I went 1 more). Don’t be like me…you cannot take the top off the side tank, unscrew the bottom cap and fill with water, replace the cap and then attach to the tank base. I don’t know why I didn’t that, but yeah me I let the machine run overnight before using (even though there was ice in about 10 minutes) and I think it was better as the ice was solid and wasn’t watery. There was some water left in the side tank after running and the taste is oh so like everyone’s favorite fast food place. Excellent crunch and it just can’t be beat if you’re into chewing ice like myself.

Great machine! Huge improvement on the older one it replaced. Makes LOTS of ice quickly, makes the crushed-ice style pellets that makes things taste colder (to me, anyway). It's also pretty quiet, no loud "CLUNK" when ice cubes drop. Love the way it tells you when it needs cleaned and love the self-cleaning function. Very, very happy with it (especially during Tucson's summer)!

If you love crunchable ice, you will love this ice maker. From someone who bought bagged ice for a long time, know that this ice will be great to have on hand when you need it and not when you realize you are out of ice. Take your measurements.. it was bigger than we expected wvem after measuring, but found a great spot for it. It does make noise through its cycles and it’s good to have water on hand, but leaving it plugged in, it was always had ice rest for my wife and I.

    We love nugget ice

We love it with one or two minor exceptions. It's just a little too high for our kitchen as shown in the attached images. I believe it is about 17" high and our cabinets are around 15 1/2". We have it currently in front of the cabinets but the door just ever so slightly touches the unit. Which brings me to the second exception. I didn't realize how heavy this unit is. It is 30+ pounds. It's a beast. It makes it a little less portable. What I'm saying is that if they made this 2-3" shorter and maybe 10 pounds lighter, mwah! When I picked up the Opal 1.0 ice maker I had done a fair amount of research on ice makers. The problem is that the research was done on the less expensive ice makers, the ones that make the cubes. All I kept reading about was how nugget ice is what you ultimately strive for. I knew nothing about nugget ice though as I wasn't prepared to spend the extra dollars on the ice maker. Now that I have a nugget ice maker I can understand why everyone says it is top of the line. You load up a cup with nugget ice, pour your warm drink over it a viola, in seconds you have an ice cold drink. As you drink the ice swirls around in the cup making fun sounds. You end up getting a few nuggets in your mouth and they are little gifts of fun to munch on. They are solid pieces but not rock solid so easy on the teeth. The best part is that the ice doesn't melt very fast. I don't know what the science is behind it but it hangs in there really nice. As I said earlier, I did research on regular cube ice makers and one of the selling points is that they make ice in minutes. I believe the advertising for this unit says it starts making ice in 12 minutes. Well, that is sort of true. First, you would want to use cold water to try and hit that mark, otherwise it is more like 15 minutes. Second is how it makes the ice. It doesn't make a tray at a time. You won't have a full glass of ice in 15 minutes. It makes them one or two nuggets at a time. What this means is that it really is more like a cup of ice takes about 30 minutes to generate. The bin where the ice is generated is not cooled. The Opal 1.0 is not an ice storage unit. You will either want to make the ice and use it very soon or take it out and freeze it. It will tend to clump a bit when you put it in the freezer but it breaks apart nicely in your cup once you pour your liquid on it. We find ourselves running the unit for a few hours to make a nice bag or two of ice and then turn it off. Since the bin holding the ice isn't refrigerated you might ask, what happens when it melts? GE thought of that and it just melts back into the pool of water to make the ice! While running, the unit is pretty quiet. I would say it is on par with a quiet dishwasher. There is a little hum. Once you leave the kitchen, you don't here it. Using it is super simple too. Pour your water into the giant bin at the front of the unit and press Start. When the water level gets too low, a light comes on the ask for more water. Once it gets beyond a certain point, the unit turns off. All in all, this is a solid unit. The ice is fantastic, it's easy to use, it's quiet, and the whole family loves the results. I just wish it was a touch smaller and lighter.

This is a good ice maker, making the nuggets like you would get at Chick-fil-A. You do not need the extra tank unless you are having a party and don't want to fill the lower water reservoir. THE BAD - it's loud, louder than a dishwasher! One fix is to put refrigerator magnets on the side to quiet the vibration. To put on a kitchen countertop under cabinets, the device must be pulled out to open the top and get your ice. For the price, this should be 3-Stars but overall I think with a few revisions this product could easily be a 5-star product.

I recently had the chance to try out the GE Profile Opal 1.0 Nugget Icemaker with a side tank, and I must say, it’s a game-changer for ice lovers. This sleek and innovative appliance has completely redefined the way I enjoy my beverages. The soft chewable, crunchy nuggets that it creates have elevated my drinking experience at home to that of some restaurants that I have visited in the past. The Opal 1.0 boasts a modern and compact design, making it a seamless addition to any kitchen or home bar setup. Its black stainless-steel exterior gives it a polished look that matches closely my LG black stainless-steel appliances. AT 17” tall, it still manages to fit on my countertops and squeeze in under my cabinets. I don’t think I will keep this on the counter all year round, but for sure when I have a party or need more ice than my LG fridge can produce since it does take up some valuable space in my limited countertops. The user-friendly interface and intuitive controls make it very easy to use and there are only two buttons that you have to worry about. The start up process of the initial sanitization had me a little worried since it asks you to fill it up and use a teaspoon of bleach and then start a clean cycle. I was a little worried about using bleach in something that I will use for eating and/or drinking, so I ran a few extra rinsing cycles after the sanitization, and I didn’t notice any residual affects. In the manual is a list of the US and the how hard the water is in your area. I tested my water with a meter that I have, and the map was accurate for me. I decided to use distilled water in this so I won’t have to worry about build up, but depending on your location, you may have to descale this monthly or every few weeks. What I believe sets this ice maker apart is its ability to produce nugget ice, a favorite of my kids for its soft, chewable texture. This icemaker can churn out a batch of ice in as little as 20 minutes, ensuring you’re never left waiting for your next refreshment, I found that the entire basket was filled in about 4 hours and it will auto pause if it detects ice in the way. Clear out the ice in its path and it will resume making more. In all, 3lbs of ice can be made from the 48 oz of water that it holds and the side tank you can add even more (96 oz.) water to keep the party going. The unit is very quiet and only emits a low-level hum while it is on. Once you are done, you can easily drain the unit into a sink, dry it out and store it for the next time. The basket and included scoop are easy to clean with soap and water. The outside of the unit is equally easy to clean due to its simple design.
