Customers appreciate the Opal 2.0's excellent ice quality and overall performance, frequently praising its ease of use and attractive design. However, some users find the machine noisy and require regular maintenance, including filter replacements and descaling. The water tank capacity and the need for frequent sanitization are also points of concern for some customers. While the compact size is a plus for many, others find the weight to be a significant drawback.

One Ice Maker to Rule Them All!

As we our homes want to continue to up our culinary game, one of the fun areas is ice making. And the new GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker is as fun as it comes and super easy to use!
SETUP:
- Unboxing and setup really is quite easy! There are a few parts you have to clean like the ice tray and the water tank, and you need to need to run it through a cleaning cycle to start off but that's about it! Once I was doing my cleaning cycle I was ready to start making ice.
- The machine is really quite quick in making ice which is nice. It will run a lot at the beginning since you have an empty bin but once its caught up you are good to go!
PROS:
- I really like the look of this ice machine. It's sleek, modern, and just blends into where ever you place it, either on your kitchen counter or at a mini bar!
- The ice itself is simply fantastic! It's the "good" ice that are small pellets that you would get from your favorite soda shop. It's nice and cold and holds up well in your glass, just perfect ice all in all.
- I really do like how it does not need to be connected to a water line and you can have it wherever you want. The side water tank is super convenient and helps make the ice machine last for a long time in-between having to fill it up.
- I also think the light is a nice feature, adds a certain elegance to it. You can either have it on full brightness, about half, or off completely.
- The Opal 2.0 can also connect to an app via wifi. This might seem a little weird but it's actually pretty useful and you can tell it when you want it to make ice vs when it should not. If you do not set that up, it will just automatically make more when it can sense you have used some ice which is a nice feature but if you want it to be quiet and automated the WiFi is nice.
CONS:
- The only downside in my mind is the "cleaning" process. Obviously, you want to clean these things frequently as you want to make sure your water lines are nice and clean. However, cleaning involves using a 5 cups water to 1 teaspoon bleach solution and then draining the entire machine and then running it again with clean water. The appeal of this ice machine is that you can use it anywhere aka not next to a sink or water connection, but when you clean it it is much easier to do so when you are right next to a sink & faucet.
BOTTOM LINE:
- As these dedicated Ice Machines comes more popular, the clear favorite as the best you can get is the GE Profile Opal 2.0. It looks like a nice high end machine, works fast, makes perfect nuggets sized ice, and the side tank makes it so you can use it wherever you want and it lasts a long time. Just like any appliance that uses water, there is some maintenance you need to do to keep it in great shape, but that's really not that big of a deal. This is the best ice maker you can get and is a lot of fun having around the house for drinks like soda, coffee, cocktails, or whatever you like best!

GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra Nugget Ice Maker with Side Tank in Stone White is a great addition to my countertop and family usage!! This came boxed really well and protected. The Ice Maker is quite heavy and took 2 of us to get it out of the box and onto the countertop. It is a very well-made GE product, sturdy and solid and took up a big part of the countertop where I placed it.
After unboxing and going thru the pieces and reading all the instructions, I was ready to get busy making ice! The instructions were easy enough to read thru and there is a quick set up guide to help. You can also download and refer to the app on your phone for videos and setting up as well if you choose to use it.
The 1st part to tackle was sanitizing and cleaning the components and main ice maker. The most time-consuming part was the water and bleach cleansing of the unit and then rinsing it 4 times to make sure all the bleach was cleaned out, note: I did this near the sink and then moved it back to complete the setup. After the machine was cleaned and rinsed, I set it in its new home, inserted the filter, added cold filtered water in the tank and waited for the ice to appear! To fill the water tank you need to do it upside down and then re-sit the container on the stand. It would have been better if you could fill it from the top instead of having to turn upside down and sit in the holder... but it works.
The water reservoir and stand have a bottom clip and magnetic area to attach to either side of the ice maker. The metal scoop also has a magnetic holder to attach to the other side. There is a small drip tray that you place in the front of the machine to catch the drips from scooping out the ice - I feel this could be bigger and possibly made of a rubber material instead of plastic in my opinion.
After about 15 minutes of running, the ice started producing and then a few hours passed to get a full bin of ice. The nuggets it produces are a great size and they are similar to a chicken restaurant we like to go to. They are soft enough to chew and keep the beverages cold too! Love the size and consistency! The melted ice is recycled back into the machine to continue making ice so you will always have a full bin. I like the bin opening towards you and the scoop fits nicely to enable getting ice into any size glass/cup/mug.
If you load the app, you can manage when you want the ice and turn it on and off as well as lights and a few other options. If there were "negatives" I would say it is a little loud, but not a deal breaker - we are used to it as our refrigerators ice maker made noise too. Also, the cost of filters may be concerning to some as they average $20 but depending on your usage you may be able to go 8-12 months without replacing.
Would definitely recommend this ice maker!!

We bought this Opal 2.0 Ultra Ice Maker as a gift for our son, after owning and being very pleased with the same ice maker for both our permanent residence and our second home. So, this is the third Opal 2.0 Ultra Ice machine we have purchased. To be sure, the scale inhibiting filter will need to be replaced every month or so, and proper sanitization and cleaning is simply a fact of life with these machines. We always use tap water to make ice. We make sure to clean and sanitize the unit and replace the filter on a monthly basis. I went ahead and bought the 4 year extended maintenance plan offered by BestBuy for each of the machines..."just in case", but have never had to use that service. Bottom line is that this Opal 2.0 Ultra Ice Machine is probably the most used appliance in our kitchen and is definitely the most popular appliance with our guests...All of our visiting friends have LOVED it! Go ahead and buy one, you (and your friends) won't regret it!

Very expensive and quite heavy to move around the counter. If you like nugget ice this will fit the bill. I am using Primo bottled water out of a machine (RO), so hopefully the required maintenance will not be as gruesome as others have noted. I do like iced coffee in the warm months and nugget ice is not appropriate. Melts instantly. Only been used about a dozen times, but so far so good. I would reconsider spending the $$$.

I purchased this to replace an Opal 2.0 that lasted for 5 years. This replacement, while seemingly expensive is actually a great value and an excellent upgrade! First the little things, a magnetic scoop holder, no more misplaced scoop! The scoop is now stainless steel as opposed to plastic, a plus in my opinion. For the major upgrades - the machine is extremely quiet; I often find myself checking on it to see if it is working or not (much quieter than my last one)! I have not tried out the Wi-Fi function yet (I didn't really use it on the last one). The ice quality is excellent, giving you the delightful chewy nuggets that you are looking for. It also has redesigned filters, an additional air filter, and additional features for sanitizing and descaling and reminders for each!! Overall, I would say this is a great upgrade that I am very pleased with and if you are in the market for a nugget ice maker, you can't go wrong with this one!!

This ice maker has been really doing a great job. One thing I can suggest is having it close to a sink so you can refill the side tank easily. The other thing I didn't know is how often it is recommended for the cleaning cycle. I know it's a bit spendy for most people but if you feel like splurging on a ice maker this is the one!

We replaced an GE Opel ice maker that worked well for 2 years. We did have to return a couple cause they weren’t making ice. The third one made ice but after we did a descale with vinegar it worked far better. Made me wonder if the others we returned would have worked after a descale.

This is our second ice machine. Love the ice this makes it’s fantastic! Very high maintenance which is a pain. Is the ice worth it? The warranty from Best Buy had to be used on the first one I guess it was worth it, refunded the $$ spent but price was higher to replace. Might be better to warranty with GE, just replace the unit.

This is very loud, in my experience, and feels like there's not much ice, well, as a person who really likes these pebble ice. Love the ice though. When first setting it up and reading all the directions, this item seems to be a high maintenance ice maker and just going to make me frustrated overtime.
Overall, without all the other issues, the ice is pretty great, but would not recommend this.

So far, it been few weeks. It does work quick and makes ice quick. It can keep the tub full of ice inside for like 7 hours. Granted it not as fresh and starts to clumb as it melting but pretty impressive that it keeps the ice like that. After 2 days of using it. It started to make that loud noise that other people reported online and multiple videos about. Like a grinding noise. It so loud you could hear it with ANC headphones on with audio playing from another room. I so far manage to get it to stop and haven't yet. Got the noise back. I just drain both A and B hoses out and fill it back up with water again and it has yet to do it again. I'm waiting for it to come back.

I owned the first generation, 1.0, which kept breaking but made incredible ice. This new 2.0 also made ice fast and plenty of it, but it only lasted four months until the wailing from the machine started again. This machine seemed more robust in its build, but the engineers needed to fix the part that pushed the ice out. That's whats making the noise. I am so disappointed, as it works great when it works!

Our old one just passed 2 years of service and needed to be retired. This one has a few improvements over the old one. The ice making stops when you open the ice box, and the box folds out further. It also appears that the ice making pauses if you haven't opened the box in awhile - power saving feature? Not sure I like that, but overall this machine does the job well! Pricey! Get it when on sale - we got $100 off.
Great ice maker, if you are willing to maintain it

This ice maker is the bomb, and does what it is supposed to do - make crunchy chewable nugget ice, like some fast food places have, so that my wife can have the ice she loves when she wants it!
The capacity and production rate are more than adequate, and I cannot see using one of these WITHOUT the optional side tank accessory. You really don't want to have to pull the ice bin out and pour water in that way, especially if you use a lot of ice.
Just be aware of the maintenance required. I went into this knowing the maintenance requirements - weekly or so sanitize cycles, as well as monthly or so descaling cycles. If you schedule it to be off at night (say 10pm to 7am), you can squeeze several more days in between cleaning cycles. It doesn't bother me, and just ensures everything is clean, fresh and pristine.
All in all recommended, but know about the cleaning requirements before you purchase.

My boys love ice in everything, this machine has been a life saver. It works non stop. I usually don't use ice, until we bought this machine. I love the nugget ice machine, I now out ice in my water.
