Customers appreciate the Opal 2.0's excellent ice quality and overall performance, frequently praising its ease of use and attractive design. However, some users find the machine noisy and require regular maintenance, including filter replacements and descaling. The water tank capacity and the need for frequent sanitization are also points of concern for some customers. While the compact size is a plus for many, others find the weight to be a significant drawback.

The ice maker performs as expected. It is easy to set up. It sits on the Island and delivers lots of ice. It's a little noisy but you get used to it.

I wanted to wait a full month before reviewing the product. got extended warranty because some reviews made me nervous and the item is costly. bulky item, but so far love the product and love pebble ice so much. it’s been a great addition for the summer. I worry how much we could possibly use it in the winter. but guess we will see. but right now while it’s warm out, it’s been a game changer. my boyfriend and I use it every day.
we use distilled water.
sure I guess the sanitize weekly thing is a little time consuming, but worth it.
We're so glad to hear you're loving your Opal, and the nugget ice it produces! We're confident it will continue to serve your needs well for a long time to come (even in winter!). -Sarah@GEAppliances

Makes great ice but is noisier than prior gen and the omnipresent filter light is annoying. I hope it’s more durable than its predecessor
We are happy that this Opal icemaker is making delicious crunchy nugget ice. Our products are designed and tested for durability and built to last. We are confident that this icemaker will serve you well for many years to come.

Best nugget ice machine out there! Ice does not melt easily in drinks! High capacity and great cleaning cycle

I had the older model and it lasted a little over a year. Luckily I got the extended warranty and was able to exchange for this version.
Overall this one is quieter than and the added filter is nice. In hindsight, I probably didn't need the ultra version since we use filtered water and had no issues with scaling previously.
The opal ice is great, much better than your standard refrigerator ice, and this machine kept up to the summer ice demands of a family of 5.

After a couple of months the ice maker started making a squealing noise. Other people in reviews have mentioned this as well. We descaled the unit and the noise went away. It works great and I’m extremely happy with the purchase. Just understand ahead of time that you will have to clean it every couple of months.

You want real nugget ice this is it. Not only does it look good but it also gives you Real Sonic ice. Really enjoy this product. We use it all the time.

I purchased this to replace an Opal 2.0 that lasted for 5 years. This replacement, while seemingly expensive is actually a great value and an excellent upgrade! First the little things, a magnetic scoop holder, no more misplaced scoop! The scoop is now stainless steel as opposed to plastic, a plus in my opinion. For the major upgrades - the machine is extremely quiet; I often find myself checking on it to see if it is working or not (much quieter than my last one)! I have not tried out the Wi-Fi function yet (I didn't really use it on the last one). The ice quality is excellent, giving you the delightful chewy nuggets that you are looking for. It also has redesigned filters, an additional air filter, and additional features for sanitizing and descaling and reminders for each!! Overall, I would say this is a great upgrade that I am very pleased with and if you are in the market for a nugget ice maker, you can't go wrong with this one!!

The ice is great. Bought as a present for the wife since this is what she wanted.
I just wish it didn't have the wifi. I know it helps GE to troubleshoot the machine if there is an issue. BUT if you do not connect to wifi after a couple of weeks it will lock up and tell you to add water even if it is full.
A call to GE that was unnecessary but the machine wanted the wifi connected. Once connected it has been OK.. It just seems like every time we turn around it is either telling us to sanitize or descale. We only use distilled water so I do cheat and skip every other one. But you still have to run the cycle to get the light to turn off.

My kids love this machine, more specifically the ice it makes. And that's why we bought it. But the prescribed maintenance and effort to keep it descaled are really overwhelming. We buy distilled water to avoid the extensive descaling process. And sanitization is recommended way more often than I really feel like doing. It's a lot of work to have this ice machine and keep it running the way the instructions indicate.
We're glad to hear that your kids love the Opal ice maker! Thanks for sharing your feedback about the maintenance, that we'll be sure to pass along to the appropriate team. We appreciate you being part of the GE Profile family. -Don@GEAppliances

If you like to crunch on ice then this is the way to go. It also does a good job of thoroughly cooling down your choice of drink. The ice maker is not the quietest, if you are within 15 - 20 feet you can hear it above normal ambient sound level. The cooling fan is the main culprit of the sound. Sanitizing the unit is a bit of a pain.

Im very happy that i bought this Nugget Ice Machine. It makes the small nuggets like Sonic has. Its very easy to use. This is the best one that i have ever bought. I highly recommend this one. I use it everyday and the ice stays in it. You never have to empty. Just fill up the water tank.

This ice maker has been great. We keep it on 24 hours a day and it keeps a fresh supply of ice available at all times. Any ice melting goes to the bottom of the reservoir and is recycled into new ice. A fresh supply of ice is generated to replace any ice that is melted, so the ice supply is virtually always constant. The side tank makes it very easy to make sure that the ice maker never runs empty, and the system is designed so that water can be added without stopping the ice maker.

The GE Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker delivers exactly what nugget‑ice lovers want: consistently soft, chewable ice that feels like it came straight from a high‑end drink station. It cools quickly, looks sleek on the counter, and the Wi‑Fi controls are a surprisingly useful upgrade. While it’s not the quietest machine and requires regular cleaning to keep things running smoothly, the overall experience is excellent. If you’re serious about nugget ice and want a reliable, premium machine, the Opal 2.0 is one of the best options available.

Makes great ice super fast. The worst part about these units is the maintenance and keeping it clean, but man when you have large parties or specialty drinks there is nothing better. Our house fridge has super small ice bin, so we end up using this everyday more than most I am sure. Everyone wants one, but nto all can find it at the price we did.

So I really enjoy the ice maker when it’s working perfect, but every now and then I feel like it doesn’t get water from the side tank. I think this has to do with the size of the machine and where I have it located. Make sure you have adequate space so the water lines don’t get constricted. I think that is the issue I have and then I have to put water in the tank and that will take care of it for a while. The second issue is when you open the container to get ice it always drips no matter what. This issue I have no clue on how to fix. I had seen it in other reviews but went ahead and bought it anyways I needed a more reliable ice maker. Other than that it work great there is always nice crushed ice ready for you cup. I don’t think these issues are enough for me to return it and will deal with them. Better than dealing with my crusty old ice maker I had to clean once a week.

Love it! The wife and kids are huge fans of the chick fil a ice and now we have it at the house. The side tank is a huge help. It pumps out ice quick. Looks good too

Dont use the filter. Like a dummy, I tried even though the lable has every thing known to human kind to be toxic. It made the water taste horrible. It works fine without it. Other wise I like the ice it makes.
