    Welcomed canon

    Posted .

I just watched Ghost in the Shell again, for the 1st time. The take on my favorite anime franchise was a different, but forgivable one. I guess my biggest problem was knowing how it would end, but stuck waiting to see just how right I was. Giving Motoko a family, a mother to be precise, wasn't bad. It was just hard to let go of the knowledge of the series I already possessed. This story does fit in the canon as one of the many re-tellings of the beginning of section 9. I recommend watching Arise 1-4 and then Ghost in the Shell the new movie. As with all of Mamoru Oshii's work, you must be willing to open your mind to believe the disbelief to understand the possibilities of this reality. In the end, I found myself pleased with the finished product. The Major is proven to be of Asian origin. And that is satisfying. I recommend this only to those willing to open their minds to a different yet familiar story and you won't be disappointed. Cheers.

Superior 3D visuals for Live action anime reboot

    |
    Posted .

I really enjoyed projecting this 3D disc. It's more like a reboot than a adaptation of the anime but I thought it played really well as a lead in to the Stand Alone Complex series. There are some very nice visuals with the sense of depth being the main feature of the 3D FX. Several of the anime's key action sequences are very effectively recreated in 'live action'. Overall this is a good buy for demo quality and replay-ability.

A Cyberpunk Gem with Psychological Reflections

    |
    Posted .

If you love action movies with psychological reflections, then I think you'll love this movie or at the very least be intrigued by it. Ghost in the Shell presents us with a journey of self-discovery in a technology-is-king-universe - where minds can be hacked and humans enhance themselves in forced evolution. From the very beginning we are presented with the birth of a cyborg, The Major. Being the lead soldier of Section 9, her and her team are a special forces unit that attempt to take down a cyber-hacking terrorist known as Kuze. Johansson completely owns the role, giving us this tough as nails super soldier while her ghost is still becoming accustomed to living and breathing naturally in this new cyborg shell. Kudos need to be given to The Major's Boss, Aramaki and her second in command Batou. Both play a huge role in The Major's development and give us some great dialogue that compliment her on her journey. One special direction was having Aramaki only speak Japanese while everyone understands him. In this tech world of telepathy and communicators, one's personal barriers of communication and the self has been torn down. As in the original property, deep diving and reflecting on what it means to be human are all there. Unlike the original property, we see her grow from stilted walking and blank expressions to using more comfortable reflections with those she trusts. Seeing her develop more confidence and eventually progress to her badass is refreshing. There is a lot to digest if one chooses to discover it. In addition, the villain Kuze serves as a beautiful foil to the ever evolving Major and their interactions really shift the movie into its own. The action scenes were excellent and the landscape and soundtrack of this dystopian world only enhanced the effect. - The 4K truly looks beautiful. Major props need to be given to the artists and Rupert Sander's direction. A Robocop clone or a cut and paste of the original anime/manga this is not. Ghost in the Shell presents us with its own uniqueness while still paying huge homage to the original property. What exactly constitutes the soul? What makes you human? What defines you? Can one live being transferred to another and is it really living? To what lengths do powerful entities attempt to control and train you to do their political bidding and by what means? The journey and control of one's self identity and evolution in a world of technological power is truly telling and a prophecy in its own right of what our world is coming to. Ghost in the Shell touches on all of these questions and more, and in my opinion delivers.

A 4K Delight That Lacks Character Development

    |
    Posted .
Owned for 3 months when reviewed.

Watching movies in 4K HDR is mind-blowing compared to standard Blu-ray HD movies, and this is a great start to begin seeing the difference. The way some of the scenes have deep, intense blacks with good shadow detail really shows off the benefits of HDR. An extremely colorful and visually vibrant movie that really pushes the envelope in terms of picture and surround sound effects. The story could have been better, but this can happen when too much plot is crammed into a 106 minute movie that is fast-paced while lacking character development.

    A must own 3D Blu-ray 9.5/10

As someone who never got into the books and the movie this is adapted from Ghost in the Shell (2017) is simply a game changer Anyone who loves Blade Runner go out of your way to see Ghost in the Shell If you have a home 3D set-up get the 3D version . In many ways it's actually better then Blade Runner visually it's one of the best films in the last 20 years the 3D is on the same league as Dredd 3D as a film it's a massive game changer (Much like The Matrix was) Hands down a close to perfect film that could easily be the sequel to the Original Blade Runner How it only hit number 3 speaks volumes to how bloody stupid the movie going public is in 2017 Even if you have no clue about the original source material you'll enjoy it if you love HQ Sci-fi I'm more impressed with this film overall then i was with Logan The Cast is almost perfect Scarlett Johansson i find super overrated in almost everything I've seen her in until now In this film she is fantastic and carries the film wonderfully as Major I'm pretty sure she watched BBC's/AMC's Humans and studied how those actors/actresses play Synths and tried to copy that interpretation of A.I./cyborgs I've seen some critics blast Johansson for her performance I just don't think those "so-called" Professional Critics understood what she was doing she really can act who knew! With this part I've actually become a fan of her (There is one scene though i think the director over sexualised her/ the character when the Major climbed onto the boat after she was swimming in the water and she is taking off her swimsuit from behind and you follow the zipper down but, it cuts away It might sound silly and tame compare to the stuff they did with Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad Pilou Asbæk (as Batou) Simply awesome every scene he is in he steals the show Perfect Casting Takeshi Kitano (as Aramaki) Another close to perfect cast choice he is flawless i wish there was more of him Michael Pitt (as Hideo Kuze) I haven't seen the Original Manga film in 20+ years so i forgot many plot elements regardless i think he also did a great job Chin Han (as Han/Togusa) They changed him up a bit But, Chin Han is a great actor i wish there was more of him in this film though Peter Ferdinando (as Cutter) He is hands down the weak link in the chain that would make this film flawless as a villain he is kind of generic and isn't fleshed out nearly enough for you to care in a sense But, there is a sense of satisfaction when he meets his end The best only two formats this was made for is 3D and 4K The quality of the 3D is very much like Dredd 3D it adds a huge layer to the overall film presentation That has to be seen to believe As a film it's living breathing art (I don't think Blade Runner II will be this amazing as far as the overall look and feel) This is The 21st century's The Matrix it changes the landscape of cinema in every possible way If you love art see the film, If you love Sci-Fi see this film, If you want your eyes to explode see this film Close to perfect I hope Paramount/Dreamworks does the right thing and continues this story with this cast and crew This is the type of series that if handled the proper way could be a massive Property I'll openly admit now I'm curious about the manga film Should be spotlighted as a legit true game changer and supported 9.5/10 There was a Ride Along 2, and Honey 3 we should without a doubt get a Ghost in the Shell 2

Interesting remake of the original 1995 anime Ghost In The Shell. The first time I saw this 2017 version I did not appreciate as much because it does not really capture the philosophy of the original. After watching the 1995 anime though and then revisitng this film afterwards, I like how they tried to reimagine several of the scenes in a fairly faithful way. They do change some things that didn't need to be changed, but they also tried to nicely re-create some of the more memorable moments. Ultimately this is a really nice eye-candy movie for your 4K system.

    I really enjoyed this movie!

I am not deeply familiar with the original Ghost in the Shell Anime - but I am aware of it, particularly the influences that fed into it, and the influence it would go on to have. So I'm not really one to judge whether this film was a faithful adaptation of the source material. What I can say is, this was a beautiful film with incredible production design! The cyberpunk setting is executed to perfection, recalling shades of Blade Runner, Syndicate/Syndicate Wars, and other seminal works. The look of the main characters was distinctive and interesting, with great casting (and - no surprise - Scarlett was stunning as usual). The story kept me engaged, with enough depth to tie the action sequences together, but admittedly a little shallow in the interest of keeping things moving. Little touches, like the brief cameo by Michael Wincott (a criminally underused actor, in my opinion) were appreciated as well. So what about the disc itself? Well, I would say it benefited from 4K resolution and HDR for sure. It is largely a dark movie, but there are a handful of scenes that really jump off the screen - the cityscapes are an obvious example, and another highlight (no pun intended) was the attack with the electrified cattle-prod type weapons.

some people who saw this in the theater just didn't like this movie. They had no connection to anime so they didn't understand it. I was shocked at how well anime style was captured from the original movie to this live action one. I'm glad I have it
