    A Shell of a SteelBook Worth Double-Dipping for…

I tend to shy away from designs that deviate too much from a film's original promo art, but there are so many strengths to be had in this SteelBook release that warrants a purchase. The slipcover (another addition that I usually find unnecessary with SteelBooks) is a vividly colored image of the Major's face printed on translucent materials in which you can see a peek of the SteelBook's cover. Removing the slipcover fully reveals the Major's face in construction, equally lush with color and spanning throughout the front/spine/back cover of the SteelBook. The interior art is a bit simplified in comparison, showing a new image from the film's climax. The 4K & Blu-ray discs themselves are no afterthought; both designed to resemble circuit boards with a finely embossed finish. The contents themselves are what really won me over. Within are a generous amount of special features curiously absent from Manga/Anchor Bay's BD SteelBook and while they're both in the same aspect ratio, the aforementioned doesn't quite fill the entire screen. This Lionsgate release gives it an IMAX-like ratio and while I was only able to watch the Blu-ray disc for now, the remastered image looks beautiful as ever. All in all, this is when package design equates as a work of art and truly makes the most of its medium. While I still love that Manga/Anchor Bay's SteelBook captures its original 1995 spirit, this new shell is definitely worth double-dipping for.

This is the original, OG cyberpunk movie. I love that it's more than just action. What other film can be visually appealing, entertaining, and delve into the idea of what makes one human/alive?

So much has been said about this movie already, so I will only share some of my observations about what I got from playing it on my home system. As I don't have a 4K TV yet, I couldn't watch that disc, but the standard Blu-ray sufficed. For my first session I perused the Japanese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, and it has somewhat more definition of clarity than the original stereo track, although some of the dialogue could have been more aggressively mixed to keep it from being buried. The English subtitles were largely a direct port of the script used with older editions of the movie (with the exception of a line from Batou getting changed for no real reason, at one point). The picture overall was beautiful, except for some of the brighter computer screen images which looked a little oversaturated at times, particularly with complex graphics. The only possible disappointment was the use of The Passengers' song "One Minute Warning" in the end credits, which was used for the original American release of the movie back in 1996; because the original Japanese version of the movie is featured on the disc, they could have stuck with the original score by Kenji Kawai, but ended up not doing so. Apart from that, however, the movie holds up as well as it always has, as a true classic, and I would not hesitate to recommend getting it (again) despite any perceivable discrepancies.
