Got the 2023 Gigabyte G5 KF5" Laptop a week ago and have been putting it through its paces both as a “desktop replacement” and a mid-range portable gaming system. Despite its larger size needed for the GPU and CPU fans it’s still under 1” thin and weighs well under 5 lbs. It came configured with 16 GB of DDR5 memory upgradable to 64 GB, and a decent 512 GB SSD M.2 NVME 4th gen drive but that’s a bit small if you want to install multiple games. Luckily there is another M.2 slot so you can add a larger SSD drive. The Intel 12th Generation Core i7 12650H comes with 6 high performance cores that can run crazy fast at 4.7 GHz and 4 energy efficient cores that are limited to a commendable 3.5 GHz. The 10-cores combined with the 16 threads and 24MB smart cache makes this laptop great for multi-tasking and all around gaming, productivity and photo/video processing apps as well. What makes this system a gaming laptop is the latest mobile GPU - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 video card w/8GB of dedicated DDR6 video memory. It also supports the latest DLSS 3 (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and Ray tracing that provides a fluid gaming experience for many games with high quality settings turned on. I have tried a few older games such as Call of Duty, Rise of Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V with high visual settings @1080p resolution and easily got over 100 fps. You’ll be able to play most modern AAA games at high or ultra settings on the go while you’re away from your main high-end desktop rig that lets you max out all the visual settings. Other notable features are 5 total USB ports - 1 x USB-A 3.2, 2 x USB-A 2.0, 2 x USB-C 3.2 Also 1 x HDMI, 1 x Mini DisplayPort port and gigabit Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi 6 AX, Bluetooth 5.2 and a microSD-card reader. The RGB backlit keyboard is customizable and has a nice, solid feel to it with just enough travel and resistance. The built-in speakers are just OK, I found it best to play games with head-phones on, which sound great thanks to the DTS-X Ultra Audio Technology. It also helps block out the fan noise. The 15.6 LED FHD 1080p display offers 144 Hz refresh rate which is great for a fluid, flicker free gaming experience, but in my experience it wasn’t bright enough to use in a well lit room, especially with lots of sun or natural light. It is also not a touch-screen display. The battery life is not great (~ 2hrs) when playing games using the power hungry GPU and 144Hz display, with the CPU and GPU fans at full blast, but that’s to be expected. If you’re doing more basic computing, with the built-in Intel video you’ll get about 4.5 hours of battery life. Either way, make sure you don’t forget the charger the laptop came with, because you will not be able to charge it with your own USB-C charger. All in all, I would say this is a solid mid-level gaming laptop that can easily be upgraded to be even better and should satisfy most gamers on the go and also act as an affordable desktop replacement.
