    Martin Scorsese's Masterpiece !

Once in a while, a film comes along that combines all the qualities that make a blockbuster classic.. " GoodFellas " is definitely one of these films, with a cast to die for, a storyline that combines just about everything. Drama, Horror, Romance, Action & Crime all rolled up into some of the most beautiful cinematography Hollywood has to offer. Martin Scorsese's abilities shine in this masterpiece of film engineering and this Blu-ray only highlights the sheer genius of this fine director. synopsis - Martin Scorsese explores the life of organized crime with his gritty, kinetic adaptation of Nicolas Pileggi’s best-selling Wiseguy, the true-life account of mobster and FBI informant Henry Hill. Set to a true-to-period rock soundtrack, the story details the rise and fall of Hill, a half-Irish, half-Sicilian New York kid who grows up idolizing the “wise guys” in his impoverished Brooklyn neighborhood. He begins hanging around the mobsters, running errands and doing odd jobs until he gains the notice of local chieftain Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino), who takes him in as a surrogate son. As he reaches his teens, Hill (Ray Liotta) is inducted into the world of petty crime, where he distinguishes himself as a “stand-up guy” by choosing jail time over ratting on his accomplices. From that moment on, he is a part of the family. Along with his psychotic partner Tommy (Joe Pesci), he rises through the ranks to become Paulie’s lieutenant; however, he quickly learns that, like his mentor Jimmy (Robert DeNiro), his ethnicity prevents him from ever becoming a “made guy,” an actual member of the crime family. Soon he finds himself the target of both the feds and the mobsters, who feel that he has become a threat to their security with his reckless dealings. Goodfellas was rewarded with six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture; Pesci would walk away with Best Supporting Actor for his work. Video - Superb 1.85:1 aspect ratio 1080p/VC-1 encode on a BD-50 dual-layer disc. Colors are gorgeous, with lifelike clarity that looks amazingly true! This PQ is about as good as it gets and all will be pleased with this excellent picture. Audio - When GoodFellas was released on HD-DVD its audio was encoded using the Dolby Digital-Plus Lossy encode. Now on Blu-ray, we get a Digital Dolby 5.1 encode that is very good, but a DTS-HD Master audio track, would have been more proper. GoodFellas sound is encoded at 640kpbs bitrate with dialog sounding adequate, with the fronts & center being heavily used, since this is mainly a dialog driven soundtrack. Extras - 2 commentaries by Ray Liotta, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino and Frank Vincent, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, producers Irwin Winkler and Barbara De Fina, cinematographer Michael Ballhaus and editor Thelma Schoonmaker. - second commentary, dubbed "The Crook and The Cop." Henry Hill and FBI agent Edward McDonald - 29-minute "Getting Made" cast commentary, featuring new interviews with Liotta and Bracco - 8-minute "Workaday Gangster," which features a new interview with Hill on life as a mobster - "Paper is Cheaper Than Film" storyboard-to-film comparison, which features Scorsese's pencil-drawings of many of the key scenes in the film. GoodFellas is a masterpiece of Movie Making and hands down one of the all time best Mob films ever put to celluloid.. Martin Scorsese's fine direction and the combined talents of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta & Paul Sorvino have created a film for the ages!

Many books, articles, reviews, and essays have been posted or published about Goodfellas that all confirm one big thing: it's an absolute classic of modern cinema and one of the top 10 gangster movies ever made. Released many times on home video from VHS, to DVD, to special edition DVDs and blu-rays, The Goodfellas 25th anniversary edition finally brings us much closer to the way the film was meant to be seen and heard. Remastered from 35mm celluloid film source elements with supervision by director Martin Scorsese, the new version was scanned in 4k to bring tremendous amounts of new details to the digital realm then re-colored to match the original release and in addition had the sound re-mixed and upgraded to lossless DTS-HD surround sound. All this was done to pull you in closer to the world of Henry Hill, Tommy D, and Jimmy The Gent. Many of you who purchased Goodfellas on blu-ray years ago many already be happy with the way the movie looks and sounds but that version released in 2007 lacked HD sound and had technical issues with the video that limited the true colors and details of the image from being seen. This new version not only makes the image pop even more with better, natural colors and details and textures but it feels more like a movie shot on 35mm film should look. The best way to describe it is it feels like stepping back and seeing the movie being projected on 35mm but with the convenience of being on a digital HD disc. For those with big sound systems the lossless DTS-HD remastered track definitely puts your investment to good use by bringing to life lots more detail and clarity to the dialogue, classic music tracks, and expressionistic sound design and effects. Now all the scenes feel much bigger and again pull you closer to the world of Goodfellas. If you're a fan of the movie, do yourself a favor and pick up this classic that has been remastered with love and care and is priced very, very well!

    BluRay Does the Trick

Ray Liotta made a well deserved name for himself as an actor in this film directed by Marty Scorsese, and it is thrilling to see again on BluRay. In theaters this movie was never without its grain and dark areas, which survive in this print (BluRay.com gives its image 4 out of 5 stars) -- but that's not bad; this film looks crisp and sharp and every bit as good as the original theatrical release that shocked, excited and amused. Its so much better in blueray. The immortal and terrifying "You laughing at me? Then what are you laughing at?" scene with glinting eyes in pitch black darkness fully reveal the devilish delight of the actors is worth the price alone to get the bluray. A full surround track amplifies Muzzle flashes in the dark and headlights and full details on the period cars (often shown at night, when these guys are most active) make it all the more worthy.

this is a masterpiece by the legendary martin scorsese. this movie and the departed are his best movies without a doubt. goodfellas has a great cast and realistic mafia bosses and characters and joe pesci is one of the most vicious and evil people along side anthony hopkins as hannibal lector and javier bardem as anton chigurh from no country for old men. deniro is of course one of scorseses favorite actors-hes great in this. ray liotta does a really good job mainly because hes so unlikely to play this part. the story is all over the place dealing with drugs and killing people with an ending that will have you hating ray liotta. all the mafia stuff from the clothes to the accent is down perfectly because martin scorsese directed it. overall this is probably the best mafia movie along side godfather 1 and 2 and the departed.

After Goodfellas Blu-ray received a welcome upgrade for it’s 25th anniversary, it looked like a completely different movie, I was excited to see how the new UHD format would handle the 4K source that was created for the 25th upgrade. Unfortunately not very well. It’s watchable but the upgraded Blu-ray, included here, actually looks better. Blacks are too bright and often over power any detail during dark scenes. I also never noticed one instance of HDR or a wider color gamut than what the Blu-ray Disc had shown. The movie itself is essential to any video library but for the money I’d just get the Blu-ray.

If you're a Scorsese fan and you haven't seen this, do so immediately. First of all, De Niro plays a gangster. Now if there is one actor on this earth that was meant to play a gangster, it's him. Also, My Cousin Vinny, or Joe Pesci plays a wicked role as well, including all that charm that he embodies and is dominant in his most notable roles. The progression of the story is well put and the narration has some highly quoted moments as well as the main scripting, but what really makes this movie is all the chaos that is a part of being a gangster. Now I don't know about you, but for as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a gangster.

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that this is not the perfect must-have film for 4K because of quality of picture, but this is a near perfect film because of the content (which I'm sure your familiar why if you've seen the film) and the adequate improvements to the overall picture and sound. Goodfellas is a classic and should be owned on every format from VHS to 4K. Add this film to your collection, even though it's older it still proves to be amazing in 4K some 27 years after its initial release. It looks about twice to three times the picture clarity than the blu-ray it comes with.

This is not just my favorite gangster movie of all time. This is my favorite movie of all time. Period. Goodfellas is art. Everything from the music, the acting, how the story is told, is simply excellent. This has been my favorite movie since I first saw it in 1994 when I was old enough to watch rated R movies. I havent since seen a movie that is better directed or as well put together. If you havent seen this movie, then you have to to appreciate what great cinema is all about. As a matter of fact, I think ill go watch it right now.

Setting aside this movie's legendary status as a high point for Scorsese, DeNiro and all involved, this is the best home video release of it yet. Warning, though: If you don't like film grain you'll have to get used to it here. This movie has a look consistent with its vintage and its director's intent. For some modern viewers that may be a problem and it's understandable. Me, I think it looks right. Quibbles, yeah, always. But nothing more. If you're on the fence, get off it before someone whacks you.

The lowly, blue-collar side of New York’s Italian mafia is explored in this crime biopic of wiseguy Henry Hill. As he makes his way from strapping young petty criminal, to big-time thief, to middle-aged cocaine addict and dealer, the film explores in detail the rules and traditions of organized crime. Watching the rise and fall of Hill and his two counterparts, the slick jack-of-all-trades criminal Jimmy Conway and the brutish, intimidating Tommy DeVito, this true story realistically explores the core, blue-collar part of the mob. I have been eagerly awaiting the 4k release of this. While it is the best version out there for picture that you can purchase I was a little disappointed with the transfer. Many directors used a grainy filter to produce a classic feeling to the movie, this does not translate well to high definition. This is very noticeable in the low light scenes and there is a crush in some of the detail. The movie itself is a must own, but don't expect too much from 4k.

Seeing this film again in the 4K transfer was a treat. Seeing it in such crisp resolution was astounding although in contrast to other new 4K films it is limited given the age of the film. The enhanced sound more than makes up for it which will make you feel as though you are watching it for the first time for the enhanced sound and visuals which you can now pick up. I went from DVD to 4K so it's a significant upgrade from my vantage point.

Listen up! There would be no Sopranos if it weren't for Goodfellas. This movie was so good that basically a somewhat TV spinoff was made. I have yet to see a better mafia movie than Goodfellas. The only movie that came close was Casino and only because it was the same director. I repeat, if you've ever looked at the Sopranos you'll definitely recognize familiar faces in this movie. The bottom line is...it's a classic...BUY IT!!

After a rocky history of home video releases Goodfellas has received the release it deserves with this new 4K restoration by Scorsese and sporting a new HD audio mix which is a huge improvement over the previous Blu-ray's DVD-era 5.1. mix. Extras are the same as the previous release except for the new documentary on Scorsese's mark on the crime genre and the hardcover booklet featuring plenty of great photos as well as words on the influence of the film.

Goodfellas on blu-ray looks great and serves as a good upgrade to previous dvd editions. This set includes all the features from the previous two disc edition on one blur-ray disc which is cool. As for the film itself , I believe if you have seen it then you already know what a great film this is, and if you haven't seen this then i envy you because watching a film like this for the first time is a great experience, so by all means check it out.

The reason this movie is receiving a 3 and the only reason is because while there is an improvement in the 4K edition of picture and sound on Goodfellas, the difference is not so huge as to warrant the $30 price tag. The previous Blu-ray anniversary edition is sufficient if you have it already. If you don't, and shame on you if you don't, then splurge the money now since it comes with both editions anyway

THE best mob movie ! This is a slam, bam, stab 'em, shoot 'em, kick 'em, bury 'em mob movie with a fantastic story.. after all, it's based on a true story, those make the best movies. The acting line up is top notch and even though it's an older movie, every time I see Ray Liota or Pesci or deNeiro, I think of Goodfellas ! This movie will make a lasting impression on the viewer, and if you knew nothing about organized crime, you will after watching this.
