I really wanted to like this camera. But it just does not do the job. I have a pool being built, below a deck, and I really wanted a camera that would pick up anyone on the stairs of the deck, or anywhere around/in the pool. It works great on the deck and stairs, but if I walk around the pool or anywhere to the right, it does not pick up motion at all. I understand it's directed to be placed 6.5 feet from the ground, but I would still expect this to pick up motion from higher and farther. Ultimately, I was hoping to use this in place of Blink cameras, to keep everything in one app, but the cheaper Blink cameras far outperform this. They pick up so much more motion - motion anywhere in camera view - while this simply does not. So this is getting returned. For the price, I expected much better performance.

Hi Walter, thanks for sharing your feedback about your experience with the Nest Cam (battery), and we’re sorry to learn that it didn’t meet your expectations.
Your camera runs algorithms to process video and audio data so it can determine whether it detected something you might want to know about. To detect anything besides a person, animal or moving vehicle, the camera checks for general motion in the scene. It learns what’s normally in its background view and looks for movement and changes. As a result, it can sometimes trigger not just for important things, but also for minor things like tree branches that sway in the wind. If you only need your camera to detect people, animals or moving vehicles, it's recommended that you don't turn on this feature.
Also, Activity zones can help determine when your camera records something. If you set up Activity zones, your camera only records in the zones that you’ve enabled. This allows you to ignore busy or unimportant areas of your scene. If your camera detects that even a small part of a notable object is in an Activity zone, your camera should record it.
We hope you’ll consider using the Nest camera, and if you’re willing to give us an opportunity to help improve your experience, please contact us anytime here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Absolutely satisfied. Very well built and excellent video quality for what it is. I have no issues with it working on the google home app and not nest. The link up speed is far better than my ring battery it replaced. Looking forward to the flood light when it comes out.

Although this camera is sold as ‘wire free’ and has a rechargeable battery, there is also the option to buy a 33 foot power cord that allows the camera to be permanently plugged in, thus avoiding the need to take the camera down to recharge it. This was a good option for me, as my camera isn’t easy to reach without a ladder.

Love the Google nest cams and have many of them. Setting up and linking is pretty easy. The only think I don’t like about the ones like this one that is wireless is that although you can put them anywhere, it gets old having to take them down to recharge and then put back up

This is a great security camera. When combined with a solar charger it runs without servicing making it very portable. As the pictures show, being able to mount it on a tree gives us a fantastic view of our home when we are away.
The only recommendation would be to add a hood to keep snow off the lens.

After reading some of the reviews I was a little hesitant about buying the battery version of the Nest Cam but after owning for a few months now and still haven't charged the battery... I will be upgrading the older versions I still have

We use this Camera indoors for our Dog when we leave that also works as security. Mounting was super easy as it's wireless and the mount is purely magnetic, so taking off the camera is just a simply grab and pull. Covers a very wide viewing angle to get our door, kitchen, living room, and dining room.

1. Doesn't capture movement all the time. Set up the zone correctly and misses half of the vehicles, people, animals that are in the zone. 2. During live view you can't go back in time easily. You have to go in to history, then if it recorded you can. 3. You have to use the Google Home App and can't add it to your existing Nest App. Not a huge issue but it's annoying. 4. Picture quality not the best. Trying to see a license plate on car 10' for camera is a challenge to read. 5. Slow to start recording once something is in the zone set up. A car traveling 5mph is almost gone when it finally starts to record.

Hi there, thanks for sharing the details of your experience with Nest Cam (Battery). We're sorry to hear about the frustrating experience when accessing the live view feature, including the picture quality and slow recording features.
Your Nest Cam (Battery) has full HD resolution with HDR video quality that’s optimized for a clear view in bright sun or dark. Keep in mind that it also helps save battery power. We believe that pixel count is only one factor that impacts video quality, and it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a camera.
We'll make sure to pass along the details of your feedback to our product team, since we're always searching for ways to improve our products and services. We'd like to give you a better experience with your Nest Cam (Battery). Please feel free to reach out to our support team here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Ups and Downs

The image quality of the new Nest cameras haven't really improved from the old ones; mainly HDR. The added options of battery power, biometrics being part of the camera, and offline video storage incase the internet goes out are nice improvements. They are slightly cheaper than the old outdoor cameras, however you have to buy the optional power cable which will make these more expensive in the end.
This camera is exclusively for the Google Home app and will NOT work with the Nest app. It will stream live video to the Nest Hub and Hub Max, it will NOT stream video to Chromecast and Chromecast with GoogleTv.
Since not all Nest products appear in the Google Home app (Nest Protects and temp sensors for the thermostat), you'll have to use two different apps for your Nest products depending on what device you want to use.
You maybe better finding the old outdoor cameras if your not interested in using the battery feature.

Hi NDRedhead, thanks for sharing your experience with the Nest Cam (Battery). We appreciate your feedback as this helps us better understand our customers’ preferences and needs.
You can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please see the steps below: - Open the Home app Google Home app. - Select your camera. - Tap Settings Video. - Under “Video quality,” tap High.
Nest Cam (battery) comes with the camera, magnetic plate, wall plate, wall anchors, wall screws, charging cable, power adapter, Quick Start Guide, and Safety and warranty document. You can use the included 3.3 ft (1 m) charge cable that plugs into the included 7.5 W USB-A power adapter.
Our long term plan is to use the Google Home app as the one place you can control all of your favorite Nest and other smart home devices, as well as Google Assistant. In the near future, we’ll allow users to set up previous Nest devices and have full control in the Home app. Users with older cameras can view their camera feeds in the Google Home app alongside the new Nest Doorbell and Nest Cams. Our team is working on bringing full functionality to the Google Home app so all of your cameras can be set up and controlled in one place.
Also, there are some limitations on some versions of Chromecast that do not allow us to support this, but we’re aiming to add support as soon as possible and the team continuously evaluates additional features.
