I've bought one just like this one and the battery last awhile. But this one's battery is going dead in least than 2 months and needs to be recharged more often. The camera is good quality but the battery is poor on this one

The video quality is good, the battery does not last as long as i hoped. I did buy the outdoor power cable and that has helped a lot.

Great camera, only drawback was length of battery about 2 days. Once i bought the cable to plug in all the time it became a non issue.

We have four of these outside the house set to record motion at night or when we leave the house. Great for peace of mind, fun to get animal activity and convenient to make sure the horses are still standing when we’re away. The app is pretty easy to use and simple install as well. Batteries last for months at a time - although if you live in a northern climate like us, they may turn off to conserve battery on cold nights.
Unless you subscribe to a service from Google, it only saves recordings for a few hours. If you hope to watch any recorded animal activity when you wake up in the morning or have any security evidence if something happens, be prepared to spend a few extra bucks per month. Could have given you 8 hrs for free - 3 hrs feels like they’re heavily steering you to the subscription.

I bought the new Nest Cam as a replacement for an Arlo camera facing the driveway. The continuous recording of the Nest Cam (when it's plugged in and with the subscription I already have for the Nest doorcam) made this my preferred choice.
The Bad (not as important as The Good; please read on)
- Very big camera body. Compared to the Arlo 3 camera it replaced, it seems very wide.
- Power connector on the bottom only accepts power cable facing forward toward the lens. It should be reversible so power cable can angle toward the back.
- No option to disable green LED indicator.
- Must use Google Home app (now I need 3 apps to view different cameras: Nest and Google Home Google; Arlo for Arlo)
- Google Home app isn't as good as Nest app. It's basic, but it gets the job done.
- Must use the magnetic mount even if using the screw mount on the bottom. Mount seems to switch camera on. Great for shipping, but bad for security as someone just needs to pull it off the wall to disable it.
- Bottom screw mount not the best location. Would've like to hang camera from above. Screw mount should be on the back.
The Good
- Low monthly subscription cost. I pay $120 per year up-front which breaks down to $10 a month for any number of cameras continuously streaming. Cheap protection for the entire family when you think about it.
- Pretty fast response times viewing the camera feed with the Google Home Hub desktop display (well, faster than Arlo anyway). This makes sense as they're both Google products. I pretty much expected this as the Nest doorbell cam works fast too so I was glad my expectation panned out.
- Wide enough angle to cover entire driveway. In fact, it's almost covers the same area as the previous Arlo 3 camera it replaced (which is rated with a wider FOV). Go figure.
- Recognition logic is built in (animals, people, cars). I didn't know this before I purchased. It should help speed notifications and lower bandwidth requirements to Google's cloud servers.
Side Notes
- Magnetic mount also makes it easy to steal (so I purchased the $15 Wasserstein Anti-Theft Mount from Amazon to protect it)
- I previously added a wireless repeater near the front of the house (for smart led bulbs for dusk-dawn automatic external lighting) so took advantage of that signal strength too. If your wireless devices have spotty WiFi connectivity, you might need to add one too.
The Verdict
I got the new Nest Camera more for the good points as they are so much more important to me than the bad (I know I put a bunch of bad points but they're not show stoppers). The camera works very well for me.

I purchased this today. I was really attracted to the battery option as getting wires to an outdoor camera would be a challenge. I already have a Nest doorbell and two Nest thermostats, so going with this seemed like a no-brainer.
Not so fast. It’s starting to be very clear that there were once Google Home products and, from a separate company, Nest products. Google Home bought Nest and the result is messy. It feels like the Google Home team won the internal battles. While the Nest name lives on, the Google Home team don’t much care about the Nest legacy and there is a jarring disconnect between the two product lines. So let’s just say that Nest (1st Gen) is an orphan now and Google Nest is simply a rebrand of Google Home. That seems to be the easiest explanation.
Oh, and the battery was at 89% when I setup the camera. It’s now 6 hours later and I’m down to 62%. I live on a quiet cul-de-sac and there has only been one recorded event all evening — actually, I couldn’t see anything in a video it recorded, so even that was a false positive. I’m worried the battery is going to be for naught.
On the positive, it was an easy install

Hi Grant, thanks for trying out Nest Cam (Battery). We're sorry to hear about your disappointment with the changes for the new products, and for the short battery life you are experiencing.
Battery life will depend on factors including activity, temperature, and camera settings that you select. Users can extend the battery life of their camera by adjusting video quality, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas. Here are some typical scenarios for your Nest Cam (Battery): Busy: About 1.5 months battery life (about 20 - 25 recorded events per day) Typical: About 3 months battery life (about 9 - 12 recorded events per day) Quiet: About 7 months battery life (about 2 - 4 recorded events per day)
If none of the highlighted factors seem to be affecting the short battery life, we recommend reaching out to our support team for further assistance by visiting us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Fell Very Short of Expectations

Purchased this thinking it would be a good introduction into outdoor cameras and I was ultimately disappointed. The wireless on the camera is very dodgy. Going further away and having the same line of sight (same obstacles) for the wifi signal to passthrough I would lose connection as I got closer to the router. The picture quality was the exact same as the dropcam pro and that would make sense given they are both 1080p. I don't care for battery devices like this as they are expected to be treated as a disposable commodity once the battery is depleted enough to not hold a significant charge. I opted for the power cable and that seemed to work fine, but I wish Google would just give a hardwired option that isn't a floodlight.
Setup was easy and took no time at all. No Nest app support sucks, but it isn't bad going through the Google Home app. For the price point it should have better video quality.

Hi Boonis, we appreciate you for letting us know the details of your feedback with the Nest Cam (Battery), and we’re sorry that it’s a disappointment for you.
You can adjust the video quality in settings to balance high resolution video with longer battery life and lower bandwidth use. For optimal video quality at 1080p, an internet connection upload speed with at least 2 Mbps per camera is recommended (DSL may not qualify). Please check the steps below: - Open the Home app Google Home app. - Select your camera. - Tap Settings Video. - Under “Video quality,” tap High.
Also, besides using a power cable or floodlight, the new Nest Cam (Battery) also has an ecosystem of accessories that allow users to put it on a table top surface, power it with PoE, or hook it to a solar panel.
We’ll make sure to share your feedback along with the right team to work on improving our products and services. Meanwhile, we’d like to learn more about how we can provide a better experience for you, and if you’re willing to get in touch with us, feel free to find us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp

Pluses- Great image quality in daylight as well as night.
Easy to set up and install
Cons- I have 6 of these cameras and when I click on Google home app. They show up but not even close to streaming all of them real time.
My dog will go outside and if looking at outside cameras, might show him for a second but then freezes up or doesn’t show him at all for quite a while.
I should point out I have a 1.1 GB’s per second service and all cameras are within 40 feet.
Would probably go with Ring next time.

Hi there, JCIII. Thanks for sharing your concerns about the Nest Cam (battery). We’re sorry to hear that your experience is below satisfaction. We’ve taken note of your feedback to work on improving our products and services. Meanwhile, we suggest having the latest version of the Google Home app that may improve camera playback controls to make it easier to play, pause, and navigate between events from the camera history view. You can change the settings like adjusting video quality, wake-up sensitivity, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas.

Love this camera. Was so easy to install. It has great quality videos day and night. The charge lasts a long time snd it is placed whrte there is quite a bit of traffic. Highly recommend purchasing the subscription so you can look back at events whenever you want

The product itself is excellent. However, it was not clear that it was not sole what we neede and is indoor/outdoor. Even the tech guy misguided us. IMO it’s the manufacturers packaging description that was not clear for non-tech people.

I’m an existing Nest user with an Outdoor IQ camera and a Hello. The new camera works well with even better quality than the IQ, but honestly I expected slightly better video quality even when set in max than I get. Sometimes it seems a little pixelated. Google also has work to do on their app for the camera. It has some bugs with video playback and usability, but I’m hopeful that they’ll clean that up with time.
