It is NOT, the newest gen thermostat looks more gunmetal-ish than pure black...ended up having to buy 2 of these just so I can have the same finish for upstairs and downstairs.

Installation and setup was pretty easy (I'm an engineer) and they work very well. I did have a problem with one unit that I haven't yet resolved. It sees my local WiFi and is logged into it, but will not communicate with the app on my iPhone even the the other three work well. I'm out-of-state for some of the holidays and I can see the temps on 3 of the 4, and they all went into Eco mode automatically, lowering the temperatures to save energy. Probably because the motion sensors don't sense anyone there.

I especially like the emails I get each month telling me how many hours my furnace and/or air conditioner ran, how I compare in energy usage to others in my area, and what the reasons for higher or lower energy usage were for that month. I also like that the thermostat automatically goes into eco-mode when no one is home (based on whether our phones are present or not).

My family has been looking to convert our home into a smart home so I figured this was a good fathers day gift to start off with. So far its helped cut our electric bill down by 25% with the eco mode and monitoring the movement in the home! We're now looking to convert our whole home!
