The long battery life and overall performance are also appreciated, along with its connectivity to other Nest products and app integration. This purchase was to replace a very old smoke detector in my basement. It was super easy to sync with the other nest detector I have, which I have been very pleased with.

This model had options for wireless or wired, I went with wireless to avoid additional wiring into my attic and basement. Set up is all through phone once it's hanging.

This is a great alarm. It is worth the money. Integration with nest 3rd generation thermostat can shut down heater if CO2 is detected. I highly recommend. Green light at night right before you go to sleep shows you all is clear it's safe to sleep.

Are you kidding me?! Replaced the batteries but still bad sensor. Dusted it as recommended (although not dusty) and still beeps saying I need to replace it. Why would I get another one when this one took a crap so soon. And back cover over batteries will not stay closed. No earthquakes where I live so not sure why covet won’t close or why it stopped. Made in China most likely reason. And now not returnable—of course.

The wait for gen 2 has paid off!

I was always very interested in the original Nest Protect. I always loved the idea, but didn't feel the cost was justified given the negative reviews and early issues. Although they have been able to gradually improve the Nest Protect through software updates, I figured if I was patient enough, I could wait until they released a whole new hardware refresh. I'm glad I waited! Compared to the Nest Protect 1st gen, this one has an improved smoke chamber (fewer false alarms), smaller physical footprint, App Silence feature (silence alarm through app via Bluetooth), and other hardware improvements that extend the stated lifespan to ten years (up from seven)! All very good improvements. But does it work? Well, my house hasn't done the ultimate test of becoming engulfed in flames yet, but I did do some basic false alarm testing. Steam from a nearby bathroom, and light smoke from a candle, both failed to trip the alarm. So it seems their claims of fewer false alarms are true thus far. *Setup* Getting this set up was very easy. You can really tell they put a lot of work into the presentation and setup. The box is easy to open, and very welcoming with its simplistic and well-designed instructions. Everything in the manual is accompanied by very good pictures to help you along the way. Basically, the steps are: 1) Download app (Android and iOS compatible) and create a free account 2) Open Nest Protect box and remove hardware 3) With app ready to pair device, pull plastic tab from Nest Protect unit to power it on 4) Unit goes through some brief testing where you will be left with absolutely no doubt the alarm works (LOUD!) 5) Unit will pair with your phone so you can enter in wifi network info, after which it will connect to wifi 6) Remove old smoke detector and mounting plate 7) Disconnect old smoke detector wires and reconnect new wires included with Nest Protect 8) Screw in Newst Protect mounting plate and snap in other end of new wires to unit 9) Twist in unit to new mounting plate 10) Finish with another test and make final configuration changes via app. Done! This was the first time I had ever replaced a smoke detector, and I found it very easy. *Mobile App* The app is very well-designed and works well on both my phone and tablet. It also integrates with a ton of other home automation gadgets, which is really cool (Nest Thermostat obviously, Philips Hue bulbs, Skydrop sprinkler controller, and many others). Here's some of the things you can do from the app: - Change mode between Home and Away (not really relevant to CO detector, but good for other devices) - Iniitiate Nest Protect sound test, checkup - Silence alarm - Change Protect location (family room, bedroom, etc, for accurate communication) - Adjust Nest Sense: - - Toggle Pathlight to light your way when you are under Protect at night - - Nightly Promise (Unit self-tests and gives green "OK" light each night) - - Steam Check (reduce false alarms on steam, good for units near bathrooms) - - Heads Up (less loud & annoying pre-alarm warning when rising CO levels detected) - Adjust unit LED brightness (low, medium, high) - Change language (English, English (UK), Spanish, French, French (CA), Netherlands) - View unit status (model, serial, software version, battery status, replace date, last update time, wifi MAC/IP addresses) - Add/remove devices to your account - What To Do (advice on preparing for CO/fire alerts) - Device History (logs on alarms and updates) So overall, the Nest Protect is an expertly-designed device and I love it so far. It has everything I could expect from a smoke/CO detector. Although it would be awesome if it could double as a wireless access point or security camera! I will definitely update this as I get more time with my Nest Protect 2nd gen units, especially if I get false positives, or actual positives. But so far I am loving my Nest Protect.

I love these Nest Protects. They are super simple to setup (especially if you already have another Nest Product). They're also very stylish, I think. Very modern looking. Solid and well built. They have an awesome night light that is motion detected. The LED ring changes color based on the situation. The voice audio is great (doesn't sound like a robot). Before buying this, I had 3 others. I've had them for about 3 years. One is hardwired in the hallway. The other two are battery operated in the bedrooms. Thus far, I haven't had to change the batteries. So even with the self checks it does (sound, battery life, etc), they are very low power usage. The other thing I like, is if it detects smoke or CO2, and you have a Nest Thermostate. It will shut off AC/Heat/Fan so as not to circulate or stoke the fire/co2. Pretty cool.

Installed 3 Nest Protects; 1 wired and 2 battery units. Took less than 30 mins total to connect to my wifi and install. All 3 are interconnected over a wireless network and will sound alarms on all units announcing the location and reason for the alert. Also includes a night light feature which can be setup to turn on when motion is detected. Overall a high quality design that interfaces well with the Nest app. The app can be setup to provide notification of alerts and provides status of detector self tests. The wired unit reports status at least once per hour. The battery units report one per day to conserve the battery. No more having to remember when to change the battery as these units report battery status and will warn when the battery needs replacing without the annoying chirps. No false alarms so far.

I have many Nest items including cams, doorbell and thermostats. I have had early devices from Nest and always loved the features, quality, interface and app. When my traditional smoke detectors were well aged, I decided to replace them all with Nest units. They were super easy to install. The battery powered units are nice for putting them where you don’t have wiring. They regularly test themselves and will tell you if you have a problem. These give me peace of mind that if something happens, I will quickly know about it. The battery last a VERY long time and have yet to replace them. They will let me know when it is time. Thankfully, I haven’t had to “use” them but now, even if I am not home, I will know if a problem arises, especially since I have pets that may be at home that cannot call the fire department. Only downside in my opinion is that the are fairly expensive and with Google purchasing Nest, the future isn’t clear. The OG Nest app is far superior to Google Home, but as long as Google keeps improving their Home app, maybe my concern will dissipate.

I have purchased a few of these to protect the whole house. They are great and network between each other so if one alerts they all alert. they also can be accessed online via the Nest Website or app. I like the fact they use long life batteries so you should only need to change them once if at all in the 10 years they are rated to last. Setup was easy and I really like the night light function. They seem expensive but when you start comparing to others with the same functions they are pretty close. They also integrate with the nest thermostat to better tell when you're home or away. Highly recommended!

My existing smoke alarms were well over the "good" date by 10 years when I checked! I knew it was time then to get some replacement detectors as well as an additional unit to cover my basement, where my utilities are, but with no existing protection. Made sence then, to go all in and get a good full spectrum smoke & CO detector for all 3 areas. Also, having them tied into my home network for remote access, was icing on the cake. I bought the 3- pack as it was the right number of detectors AND BestBuy price matched! Can't go wrong!! They were VERY easy to physically install. I was initially skeptical of the included hardware, but it worked perfectly. I was replacing some old First Alert models and the mounting holes don't match up unfortunately. But, it wasn't an issue. You don't need any special tools either; Just a screwdriver. They blend in nicely with the white ceiling which was a pleasant discovery. The app install on my Android based LG G5 went without a hitch and I had all 3 detectors connected in no time. All together, I had all 3 items physically & virtually installed in less than 45 min; from unwrapping the 3pack to walking away. I didn't even have to install batteries, as they came with & installed in each unit. The units self test (or you can have them test themselves via the app) on a schedule and you can view or hear the results. If batteries get low, they literally say that, so you know which one needs batteries. They aren't cheap, but as my & my families lives might literally depend on them, it was a very good investment. These items again, are dual spectrum for smoke AND they also are CO detectors. I really like that they're networked and that they talk when in action. Another handy feature is that at night, they also act as a night light for a few moments when you walk under them. Just for a few seconds, but enough to be helpful. Overall, I'm very pleased with the purchase and whole heartedly recommend them. Check the dates on your current units - did you know they're only practically good for 10 years?? If it's time to replace them, buy these NEST units. If you don't have any in your home, then buy these TODAY! Money well spent, because what is your (or family's) life worth??? When you buy quality, you only cry once.

First of all, this is an excellent Smoke and CO2 Alarm. It is not just an alarm with the occasional beep to tell you to change to batteries in the middle of the night ;) This is a true smart device. It speaks to you in a clear voice.  It connects to other alarms you have installed and tells you in another room where smoke or CO2 is detected so you can put it out or escape in the right direction. Connecting through the app on your phone you can also receive notifications elsewhere too. The batteries last a long time, and the app also notifies you when to change them. However, be aware that you should only use the recommended Energizer Ultimate lithium batteries, as they maintain the correct voltage. Standard alkaline batteries drop voltage as they are used, and they stop working very quickly, if they work at all. Overall, it is a great product; I highly recommend it.
