I was excited to add this to my Google home smart setup but unfortunately it can't even compete with the simple xfinity system. Very unreliable and always off line! I am glad I didn't but all extra 10 sensors and just tested the starter pack which is useless.

The Nest security system is okay at best. Here are my thoughts. Setup: Super easy. If you have Nest products already then it is super easy. I would assume it is just as easy without current Nest products. I have a Nest thermostat and Nest protects and all I had to do was push the button on my protects and it synced. System: So you only get two tabs for doors that can also be used as motion sensors but we have a cat and two large dogs so had to turn the motion sensor feature off but the door sensors still function. The home base is also a motion sensor which also was disabled because of the cat jumping on the counter where it sits. Other Nest products: We currently have 3 Nest smoke alarms and 3 Nest cameras and they don't appear to work together with existing products meaning the Nest smoke detectors also have motion detection but they don't seem to work with the protect. Overall: I like the sense of security however at $500 I think you may be better off getting another system. We don't have it set up for cellular and when you arm it gives you 30 seconds, 1 minute, or whatever you set it at to disarm before it goes off. My old ADT system would go off immediately if you were home and a door opened. I can be harmed in 30 seconds or if I am gone someone could grab allot of stuff in 30 seconds. By the time I get the notification on my phone it could be 45 seconds to a minute. I just don't think that this is up to par for the price point. The Nest system is great but not for the price. In my opinion it should be half the price.

*UPDATED* We’re releasing an update soon so that Nest Secure will offer Open tones. When the system is disarmed, you can have Nest Guard play a sound when a window or door is opened. You’ll also be able to set Nest Secure's alarm to go off without any delay. Set the alarm countdown to 'No delay' (0 seconds) when coming home. This can be set for both when you are in Home and Guarding or Away and Guarding. It should be finished rolling out to all customers over the next week or so. Nest

So far my wife and I love this. We moved from SmartThings as a "security platform" to this. Professional monitoring isn't available, however it is coming soon. This will also include cellular backup. It seems like the "quite open" feature gets a lot of bad press because people don't understand it. First you can turn off quite open. Quite open is for when you are set to "Home - Guarding". Quite open isn't available when you are "Away - Guarding". In fact if you press the button while you are "Away" the system will instantly alarm. If you feel the need for more security at night you can also just set the system to "Away - Guard" to get all the features of motion detection and door/window sensor alarming. The sensors are kind of expensive, and it would be nice if they came out with an open close sensor that was just that, open close and no motion for less money. I would buy this for my kitchen door where I also have the hub capturing motion. I do feel that $60 for the sensors are fair considering the feature set. No google home yet, which we saw at the keynote in October but it's coming, and hopefully soon. I also love that this is all within the same app for my cameras, smoke, and thermostat. Setup was super easy, as with any nest product. I would like nest to come out with leak sensors, and open up some features to work with philips hue. Nest also NEEDS to consider a better pricing structure for those that have investing a large amount into the Nest ecosystem. There needs to be a subscription where you can have unlimited cameras, and a subscription that includes cameras, cellular, and professional monitoring for a reasonable cost. $100 for the first camera and $50 for every camera adds up quick.

I installed this system only a week before going on a 2 week vacation. It was very easy to install. I like the ability to use the key tags for allowing friends or neighbors into your house. I used a key tag to allow my neighbors in to water our plants while we were gone. While we were gone we had a power outage. The Nest recorded the power outage and went to battery mode. Then reconnected once the wifi came back up again. I could see everything in history so I knew exactly what was happening and when. I even received alerts when my neighbors came in. I'm using the sensors in my upstairs and downstairs hallways and it covers my patio door on the back of the house and my walk out door downstairs. The main box is at the top of my stairs and covers anyone coming up stairs, so I have very good coverage. The only thing I might consider adding would be sensors on the windows. The sensors that come with the kit can be used as a door or window sensor to detect opening of the door or window, or strictly as a motion sensor. I'm using them just as motion sensors. I like that everyone has their own code, so I can see who arms and disarms the alarm. I also like that I don't have to pay a monthly monitoring fee.

I've been very impressed with the Nest Secure Alarm System. So much so that I'm thinking about adding additional Nest products to keep an eye on my home. Setup was super easy--just download the Nest app, let it find the Nest Guard, then add it and the tags and detects (for windows or doors). Simple. The Nest Guard has 3 settings--Off, Home and Guarding, and Away and Guarding. Home and Guarding alerts you when any window or door with a detect is opened, so it makes me feel better about leaving family at home. I especially like the notifications the app provides. If enabled, the app uses GPS to determine if you've left home. In that case, you get a notification asking if you want to enable the alarm. Likewise, when you near your home, you'll be asked if you want to disable the alarm. For those of us that are absent-minded, it's a great feature. The Nest Secure Alarm System is not cheap. But just one thwarted break-in and it has more than paid for itself. In addition, keeping my family safe is worth much more than the cost of this system. And considering the cost to have a more traditional system installed, the Nest system is a bargain. I wholeheartedly recommend the Nest Secure Alarm System. It's easy to install, and works well.

Overall it’s an excellent system. I see people complaining about no professional monitoring, clearly they can’t read, it’s coming. Also saw a complaint about no instant alarm if you’re home, be patient; Nest is a very adaptable company and will likely see the need and provide an update to add this feature in the future.

I have to prime this review a bit: I own several Nest products, including the Protect (fire alarms) and Thermostat. So when Nest announced an alarm system, I was all over it. Why? Nest. Products. Just. Work. Fire alarms? Work. They test themselves while we're not home. I can check their status from anywhere, anytime. They operate as nightlights, too. Thermostat? Works. It learns our habits and adjusts accordingly, helps us recognize when we need to use less energy and reports on our usage so we can make smarter choices. So, how about this security system? It took me all of 30 minutes to set up the entire thing to scan for motion across our entire house, check for motion + open/close status on our front door, and get everybody their own keycode. The entire setup is dictated by QR codes attached to each device so you can quickly set up and connect - each item takes about 2 minutes to set up and the app walks you through each setup step so you know *exactly* what to do, how much/where the device can see, test it out for yourself, and troubleshoot all at the same moment. (I can't overstate how smart and dummy-proof the setup process is). The only *ONLY* downside I have is that I couldn't go "back" in the setup steps if I wasn't sure I picked the right option. You can control a crazy amount of settings, from how long it gives you to leave the house before it arms itself, to whether or not the thing arms itself automatically when you set your home/away status, to what kind of convenience features you want on or off, and how long you have before the alarm goes off to disarm. To arm and disarm is as simple as a tap, using the Nest tags. They're about the size of a quarter and are super light (easy to attach to your keys, too). You can use a code if you prefer, but the tags make arming and disarming super easy (you just place the tag on top of the keypad to arm or disarm). It even has cellular as an option to use if your wifi goes out. You can connect up to 20 Detects to one alarm system (which is plenty) and there's a Nest Connect to make sure your devices can report back easily (it's an extender of sorts - our house layout didn't seem to need it, but it seemed to make the reporting of status changes quicker). It can also tell if it's being tampered with - if it's turned over, shaken, bumped, or the plug is messed with, the alarm - if armed - goes off. You get notifications on your phone/app, too (just like your other products). It does not connect to a central monitoring service that I'm aware of. Depending on your needs, this could be a bonus (no monthly fee) or a negative (no calm voice on the phone calling to make sure you're not in a truly dire situation). Overall, it's a good offering in this space and, if you don't need a 3rd-party monitoring your security, Nest is a fantastic way to go.

    Great Build Quality, but Expensive

I wanted to take my time to throughly use the Nest Secure system before I wrote my review. Nest makes some great products. Their build quality is always great and the devices they make are very intuitive to use. With the Secure system, Nest entered a market that has some competition from big players like ADT to cheaper solutions like SimpliSafe. Below are what I feel are the Pros and Cons of the system. Pros: -Easy to use Base Station (Guard) with ability to add different codes for family -Cool keychain attachment (Tag) to disarm the system without a code -Included sensors (Detect) have motion sensing and a little light built in, as well as sensing if the windows or doors are opened -Ease of installing system and adding devices using the Nest app. -Ability to monitor home while away for free, without any monthly fee -Loud siren Cons: -Expensive: This bundle only comes with 2 Nest Detect sensors. I have 3 doors that lead outside and 12 windows (15 total, 2 secured with included Detects) that need monitoring. Each Nest Detect costs $59. I understand that it is expensive because it packs motion sensing and a light into such a small device, but if I wanted to secure the other 13 entry points into my home, it would cost me around $767. If you want your home fully covered in Nest, then prepare to pay quite a bit of money on top of the base bundle. -System Software: As of now, Nest Secure seems to be in a beta period. There seems to be no connection to any smart home system (Google Assistant, HomeKit, SmartThings). So if you'd like to set up something that turns on the light when you open the front door, it is not available here. -Volume: Although it has a loud siren, when the Nest Guard speaks, the voice volume is pretty low. It would be nice to somehow connect the Nest Guard to a smart speaker (Google Home) that you can hear throughout the house. Nest Secure is a good, basic system with a couple of cool features. Expanding your system gets very expensive. If Nest allowed 3rd party sensors to interact with the Nest Secure, it would make it remarkably better. For example, I do not need a motion sensor on my window that is covered with blinds. Nest should consider a separate door and window sensor for a cheaper price or allow for 3rd party device integration. The software in the app will improve over time and hopefully add new features to the system. If you already have Nest devices, then Nest Secure will fit wonderfully into your home as it uses the same app and you have control of all your devices on one screen.

This system was very easy to install. Just download the app and scan the qr code on each sensor and you are good to go. Be aware though this kit only includes 2 sensors and 2 key fobs. Having trouble finding add on sensors. Like you can give guest temporary access to the system.

I have nearly all of Nest products installed in my home. I was very excited when Nest introduced a home security system. The hardware is very easy to install, although I ran into a little difficulty pairing the Nest Detect sensors to my Wifi; probably an issue with my Wifi signals. The system is up and running seamlessly with my other Nest products.

First of all I love Nest products. I have 3 cameras at my home and they work great. Now I've added the security system(which also works with the cameras) and it's gotten even better. My favorite feature is the door sensor. Whenever the door you choose to install the sensor on opens, it lets you know it's open with an alert on your phone. A voice also speaks from the base to let you know which door is open. I wish the package came with more sensors. Considering the cost of this thing you would think it will come with at least four. It's a beautiful piece of tech also (not sure if that matters). Only downfall is that some may have problems with placement since you have to plug it in close to an entrance. Yes I would recommend this product.

First of all I bought this on pre-order from Nest directly as a replacement to a vivint setup. The system overall looked great with the Detect and the at least modern looking systems rather than the same old bulky looking sensors. I was quite happy with the Nest thermostat that has been in use since the beginning of summer and decided go with Nest security system. Setting up the Nest Guard at the beginning was a breeze. I had decided to use an additional ASUS router to set the complete security system on. Big mistake. Nest did mention on their site that everything needs to be in the same WiFi network. I would assume that if they are not then it shouldn't even work. That did not happen. The Guard was setup on a different network while my phone was on another one and that worked. Next came the Detect. The first Detect was setup without any glitches. The second one is where everything went for a toss. It kept giving an error in the app that the base/Guard is not reachable. Till then there was no issue but all of a sudden nothing worked anymore. After I went through the support website I decided to then reset the Guard and redo the setup again on the same WiFi network as the phone was on. That was also the point I found out that the ASUS AC-66U router was on Nests list of "Will not work for you.. bad luck.. go get yourself a new router as well.. ". Well at this point the Guard decided to stop connecting to any Wifi network. Restarting the Guard was to no avail. Finally decided to do a factory reset of the Guard which only then allowed me to setup WiFi again to a different network now (same as my phone). Right after this I also ended up performing a software update of the Guard (for a brand new device just out on the market, did not expect a software update to already be available or required). In any case, the Guard was now back on. Time for the second Detect which finally connected through the app. Did I mention I had to delete everything from the app before adding it back on as part of the factory reset just because. The Guard had a code which could be entered in the app to add it back on but the Detects only had a scanning code which I had to keep safely to keep trying to add it back on. As part of the setup, when the second Detect wasn’t working and the Guard had gone awry for a while, I had inadvertently updated the software on one of Detects. This can be checked through the app by going into the each of the devices and selecting the software information. Nest states that the Detect software is automatically updated by the Guard. This did not happen. I had to manually update the other Detect which was a bit of a hassle with pressing it once and then pressing it again till the blue light flashes. Do it wrong and you factory reset the Detect. This happened on an additional Detect that I bought along with the base setup. Why should I have to go and check for software updates on each Detect when the Guard can do that and make necessary updates when its connected to the Detect? Nest failed me here. Now moving on to an actual real life scenario where there was a wind storm and I lost power for an hour. I always have Nest setup to home and Guarding while at home. I do not have cellular backup and the Nest was running on battery power. After a while once the power was out, Nest app and the base unit had an info light stating that the Guard had lost WiFi connectivity and that all the Detects and the Guard had gone offline. I understand that the Guard lost WiFi connectivity. But why should it all go offline? Did Nest not even test their product running on battery power ? 15-20 mins after losing Wifi Nest Guard went offline. 1 mins after that Detect 1 went offline. 15 mins later Detect 2 went offline. So I am at home with my security system running on battery power going offline completely and providing no security whatsoever. Nest failed miserably here. I am still not done. Wait till the power comes back up. Once the power was up and the Wifi was up, it was at least 10mins since, but the Guard would not connect to Wifi. It kept giving me the same error that it could not connect to Wifi (NS030). I had to restart the Guard, yes hard restart the Guard and it took 10 mins after that for it to connect back to WiFi. This was not the end of my woes. Once connected to WiFi, the Guard came online. But it then took 5 mins for Detect 1 to go online. The second Detect did not go online at all. I checked if its working by pressing the Detect and it flashed green, so all good right? Wrong. It took 30mins for Detect 2 to go online. I had, in the meanwhile called Nest customer support. That was a joke. They asked if I could restart the Guard - I said no since I already did that. They asked if I could restart the Detect - I said no, why should I. They asked if I could delete and re-add the Detect which I hands down refused to perform. There was no technical reasoning on why that happened other than bad hardware accompanied by similar software. While on the call, Detect 2 just went online on its own. The support guy did look at my device history which clearly showed the issue but they had no inputs other than restarting the devices. What am I supposed to do if I am away and there is a power outage for half an hr? Go back home and restart the Guard to get it to connect to Wifi so I can fell secure that my home is indeed protected? I was put on hold to talk to the second level technical support for which I waited more than 15 mins to no avail and then hung up. No feedback or response from Nest since then. I intend to plug out the Guard and turn off Wifi to test this out again and if this fails again its going back to where it came from. Another instance of this happened in the middle of the night around 3:30am when Nest Guard when offline after losing Wifi connectivity. Both the Nest Detects went offline soon after and it took more than 20 mins for WiFi to be restored. Thats 20 mins of no security. Even then it still took 30mins more the Nest Detects to go online. Essentially Nest gave a 60min potential robbery window right under my nose. Can’t beat that! One other basic issue with the setup is changing of the status. Lets say I set it to away and Guarding and come back home. The only option I have is to disable the away status and then set up home and Guarding after using the key fob. Why do I have to disable this when I am home and don’t want it to just be disabled? There should be an option to just set it to home and Guarding from away and Guarding instead of the additional step. It just seems to me that Nest built a security system but forgot to perform even basic real life scenarios on a product that is meant to make you feel safer. The software as well seems real buggy. I still have this running and am contemplating returning it but am also hopeful that the software bugs are fixed quickly. I have had this running for 2 weeks now and have to keep checking this frequently to make sure all Detects are still connected and working. I am amazed by all the 5 star reviews for this product. You might not be protected after all until all the software glitches are fixed.

I first off want to thank Mike who helped me at the store. He was well informed not just about nest but also Simplysafe and ring. I went in looking for the ring system but he was honest and said it was not coming out because of legal issues so that was out. I ended up picking nest over simplysafe because i liked the way it looked and the simplysafe system looked older. But the cost scared me with how expensive it was. I bought it anyway and set it up and it worked just fine. But I did not like that the alarm does not go off at night if someone comes in. I live by myself and my room is upstairs. I wanted something loud to warn me right away! I am going to return it and get the simplysafe Protect that was much cheaper. It is not as nice but the reviews are good and it has a fast alarm. For some people this might be a good system. Just not for me.

    Great Alarm System!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

To sum this entire review up quickly: this alarm system is really great for security. If you want home automation -- which, I happen to think home automation is an essential part of keeping you safe -- the the Nest Secure can fall short. If you want more information, read below. So, in regards to the alarm, it's great and simple. Probably best for a one story house, apartment or condo. It is loud, but I would imagine having a second siren upstairs would be idea. I honestly believe if Google put their minds to it, this can be solved with a software update and have the Google Home's around your house act as sirens. It also get's the basic's right. The Door Sensor's are encrypted, something that is important so people can't hack the sensor's without you knowing. The Nest Guard has smash and crash protection, meaning if the Guard is unplugged or damaged the monitoring center (and you) will get a notification about it. I also like the customization. That is a real winner. I am a big believer in giving the customer the ability to change how the alarm works. This way, it can change with each customer's life style, instead of the other way around. Oddly, the weakest part of the Nest Secure is home automation. In regards to what Nest provide's, it's great. And this also changed, because there was a time when we had Works with Nest, and there was some slight integration. That all has gone out the window, of course, with Google trying to merge their hardware divisions. Eventually, these growing pains will be over but right now, things can be a mess. Now, most people would think home automation is not necessary and I once thought the same. However, knowing how burglars think, you can use lights to help deter people from breaking in. And being able to program that, and schedule those lights turning on, in the app would really help and be useful. Right now, because of this, Ring is the best in this regard. They have tons of outside lights that can connect to a bridge and therefor the Ring app. Nest has the ability to innovate here, and they really need to. Another thing to keep in mind, with the announcement of ADT and Google's partnership, they probably have a new DIY and professionally installed alarm system in the works. This could have some fragmentation, where the DIY does not have all the same features as the pro installed system, but I hope not. I also wonder if Nest and ADT will be redesigning the Nest app. Which, is not bad. But you can tell the Security System is not the primary device. You have to do two clicks to actually get to where you can arm/disarm the system. This makes sense, since Nest started as a thermostat company and then a smoke detector company. This, out of all the problems, is probably the easier to fix and ADT will be able to assist. But again, that is assuming the partnership goes with ADT helping with the app. But, again, if all you would like right now is a great reliable Security System, the Nest Secure has your name on it.

It's not a great security system. I've had it since release. The software is buggy (won't show videos on my phone of when the alarm goes off...all other videos play fine except the important ones). I set the motion detection on my door sensors to be off but it comes back on regularly. The motion detectors pick up my cats all the time (my old system never did). The alarm is not loud enough to be heard upstairs in my house (only 1900sf). Home/Away assist does not work at all. Home Guard needs more flexibility (I want to be able to set the motion detection in my basement while home since I have a Bilco Door where I cannot mount the door alarm). It's a good start for a system but it is buggy and unfinished. Not a very good security system.

    More like an alert system

I never knew that delaying a security siren would be called a “feature”. That’s like delaying an airbag during a collision... every second counts. That’s like a meteorologist waiting precious seconds to issue a tornado warning because they can’t “confirm” a tornado is on the ground. That’s like watching your child accidentally fall into a pool and sitting there watching for 30 seconds just to confirm he/she is drowning. Here’s the best one: Thats like when someone kick in your back door and has enough time to walk in every room and stab each person in the household before a siren goes off. The immediate trigger of the siren is meant as a deterant. Heck the whole idea of a security system is meant as a deterant. Now what Nest has created here is NOT a security system. It is one of two things: either a sorry excuse of an alarm system, aka Alert System or a revenue cash cow that forces people to buy into the expensive monitoring subscription. Or both! I know this flaw can easily be corrected with a software update but it’s up to Nest to decide if they want to hold themselves at least to the standard to every and I mean EVERY alarm system is capable of. As a Nestcam indoor/outdoor, thermostat and NestAware customer, I REALLY wanted to like this product. I mean the design is beautiful and all but I can put my life in the hands of an alert system.

    Nest Does a Good Job.

I have 3 of the nest thermostats and smoke detectors and recently added the Yale lock. I have found all of their products to be very well designed and have never had a problem with set-up or function in the 3 years I've had the products. I watched the installation video and then set-up the alarm system without any problem. I do like that the 'Detects' use CR-123 batteries and since they can't be higher than 6'4" off the ground, I have no problem changing the batteries on them when I will need to. I set all of my Detects to 'motion sense only' and ended-up installing 10 of them total, which covers the entire inside of my house no matter what route a burglar would try to use to get in. I probably could have used less, but I wanted to make sure. All of the accessories like the Detects, and the 'Tags' that go onto your keychain worked great. What I would like to see, is that if I can use my cell phone to pay with a credit card, then why couldn't I do that with the Nest alarm instead of having to use the Tag system(?). I would also like to see a panic button option on the Detects so that just the push and hold of the button when you're home and not close to the base could trigger the alarm. Those 2 things are Just about the only things I could say as far as an upgrade of the product. Otherwise, the base is small and easily placed just about anywhere you want. I do not have any pets, so I cannot comment on that aspect of the functionality. Overall, the alarm system is a great product with a very loud report from the base when it does go off that would scare just about any burglar away.
