    Great doorbell camera with caveats

I was in need of a door camera and I went with this one because I knew it would integrate with my other Google products. My biggest gripe about it is having to use the Google Home app to set everything up and there's not a ton of features. You need the nest plus subscription to review videos more than 3 hours old, otherwise they just go away. I haven't had experience with other ring doorbells but I can say that this was great for my use case.

Hi there, JayT. Thanks for your feedback on Nest Doorbell (battery). We appreciate that you like the video quality in addition to its recording feature. We hear your concerns about the doorbell sound.

Although Nest doorbells have sounds that help you know what’s happening (for example, when it restarts), a chime is not included, But when a visitor presses your Nest Doorbell (battery), you can hear an audible alert if you have compatible smart speakers or displays, like Nest Audio or Nest Hub. You can connect a Google speaker or display and set up visitor announcements if you want to get notified when someone rings your doorbell when you’re home. You'll only get visitor announcements on your speakers and displays if they are set up in the same home as your doorbell in the Home app. Or If you choose the optional hard-wired installation, it will work with an existing doorbell chime if you have one.

On the other hand, you can adjust your Nest doorbell audio settings to turn the microphone off or on, change the microphone sensitivity, and set up audio notifications. Visit the links below to learn more about the audio settings:

We had several break ins in our condo complex. Decided to get a nest doorbell so that I can be notified. Love all the settings this has. What I am amazed is the battery life. According to google, it last 3 months before I need to fully charge it again. That is only 4 times a year of charging! Amazing! Video and sound quality is superb as well!

This item needs recharging every now and then , so when you have to do this, you must dismount the device. Over time of doing this the mounting clip gets worn and the product does not work efficiently anymore.

Hey there, VernonR. Sorry to see your experience with the Nest Doorbell (Battery) hasn’t been the best. The device does give you the option of a wired or wire-free installation. Here are the steps to install it:

      1. Check compatibility and voltage requirements.
      2. Check that you have everything for installation.
      3. Turn the power off to your doorbell system.
      4. Remove your old doorbell.
      5. Connect the doorbell to the app with the QR code.
      6. Troubleshoot if needed.
      7. Use your doorbell.

If you are within Google's Smart Home system, this is a must. It works off a battery so if your home is a new build and does not come with a doorbell this is an easy install. The advertised battery life (about 4-6 months with typical usage) is great. I would say is that it is larger than I expected, likely because it has a hefty battery in it.

This is convenient for those who don't have a wire accessible for the Nest Hello Doorbell. But this unit is kind of large and clunky. I bought as a gift and cant speak to how well it works. But I love my Hello.

Hey there, DeannaM. Thanks for leaving feedback on the Nest Doorbell (battery). We’re glad that you like its integration with your home display in addition to its video and sound quality. We’re sorry to hear that its performance is less than ideal, and we hear your concern about having a wider field of view.

Event detection depends on the camera settings that you select. You can choose which events your camera or doorbell can detect and record (people, motion, package, etc.). From there, you (and each member of your home) can decide which of those events to get notifications for. If an event is turned off, you won’t get notifications for that kind of activity. You can also change the settings like adjusting video quality, wake-up sensitivity, length of video clips, time between recorded events, and using activity zones to monitor specific areas.

We understand that having a wider camera view can be ideal for you. However, unlike some other video doorbells, Nest Doorbell (battery) has a 145° diagonal field of view at 3:4 aspect ratio. It is intended so you can see people from head to toe, and packages left on the ground.

Does not work well in the winter

Having owned this device for about 3 months, I've had a few ups and downs with it. Going into this, I was able to live with the limitations in recording. I was overall pleased with the short clips and ability to set notification zones. However, the the battery life did not matching what was advertised. Living in a relatively busy street, I decided to configure the settings to optimize battery life - this made the battery last about 10-14 days before draining completely. While not terrible, it was still not what I expected, so I decided to hard wire the door bell. This solved all my battery concerns and I was actually content with this product at this point. That is until one winter day, the Nest app informed me my device was low on battery and would stop recording clips. I made sure power was still going to the bell and app also said it was plugged in. This happened about 3 more times over the next couple months, with each occurrence lasting about a day. While the bell could still be rang, it was certainly annoying to know the Nest Doorbell would not be able to notify me of packages, or even worst, if someone stole my packages. TLDR; buy this device if you're okay with charging the device every 2 weeks, or have a wired doorbell line. Do NOT buy this device if you live in an area where winter is cold (for reference, I live in NY).

Hi Henry, thanks for sharing your experience. We regret to hear that you’re having battery/charging issues with your Nest Doorbell (battery).

During extreme temperatures, charging is paused to prevent the battery from getting damaged. If you’ve connected your Nest Doorbell (battery) to your existing doorbell wiring, the wires don’t directly power the doorbell. Instead, the battery is trickle charged by the power that comes through the wires, and the doorbell runs off the battery charge. At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the doorbell can continue to work, but the battery will drain because it can’t be charged. If the battery drains completely, the doorbell will shut down, and you’ll need to bring it inside to be charged.

What I like most about this product compared to its competitors are two things: first, it's awesome to have the flexibility of wiring it or using battery. Due to this, you can install this doorbell even in places that don't already have one without needing to run wires. Secondly, it records in portrait orientation with a 3:4 aspect ratio, meaning that it is more well-suited for a front door than a 16:9 camera. The only reason I can't give this product 5 stars is because the Google Home app could really use some improvement. The way the Nest app presents information is more intuitive. I find the Google Home app to be oversimplified and buggy. Also, I am not able to fully migrate my home from the Nest app to the Google Home app, because the Google Home app does not support the Nest protect smoke alarm, meaning that I have to use two different apps for my "Nest" devices. It's truly frustrating. They need to either make all devices work in the Google Home app or make all devices work in the Nest app. Right now, there are devices like this doorbell which only work in the Google Home app, and there are devices like the Nest Protect which only work in the Nest app. It's ridiculous, feels half baked, and frustrates long-time Nest loyalists. Google, please fix this ASAP!
