Awesome Player!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The setup was as easy as plugging it in and.. Oh wait that's it. I plugged in the hdmi, then the power and it turned on. The Google Nexus player loads Netflix extremely fast vs some Blu ray players with slow interfaces. YouTube works great, in HD too. The Pandora app is flawless, and there are countless apps for things such as weather, games, news. The included remote has a built-in microphone for voice search. Just say what you want to see and it's there. If you want a smart TV but don't want to replace your old set, then this is a definite buy! I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and with Best Buy for providing excellent customer service and prices.

Average Streamer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this on sale for $50 so though I would give it a try. I am a fan of the Nexus line offered by Google so I figured this would be a decent product. Coming from Apple TV to this (better price point was a major reason) and looked to be more powerful than Chromecast. Interface is decent though not as customizable as Android or Apple TV so a little surprised there. The remote is almost laughable, it is cheap plastic and makes horrendous clicking noises when any button is pressed, however, it does get the job done and the built in mic works flawlessly from my use. Has most all the standard apps though nowhere near the growing apps of Apple TV or even Chromecast at this point. Comcast does not support this device so that may also be a factor for most people. HBO GO, Showtime, FX Now all will not activate if you have Comcast but will on Verizon FiOS. Player handles everything I throw at it. Gaming is mostly mediocre and needs to run on medium settings compared to the Nexus 9 tablet that runs on high. AC wireless streams very fast and 1080p looks sharp and does not buffer. Plex and Kodi apps are nice apps to stream local content. This has a large developer base and the home brew content is fairly decent if you are into tinkering and rooting your Android device. All-in-all if you are in Google's ecosystem this may be worth looking at as the price has dropped and it is a decent all around device. In most cases though the Chromecast is a even better price and has a lot more apps to choose from. If you are from the Apple ecosystem I would suggest sticking with that as this device will not be one to make you consider switching, or, give you a satisfied feeling if you do switch.

If You Can Look Past The Flaws, It's Great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nexus Player is Google's answer to Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV, and runs Android TV, a specialized version of Android for TVs and set-top boxes, and it delivers (for the most part) in all facets. The design of the actual device is pretty minimal, sporting the "hockey puck" aesthetic, with the ports somewhat hidden in the back and under the device, and the remote is fairly minimal as well, sporting only a few buttons. It's nothing too fancy to look at, but aesthetics weren't my concern when purchasing this over any of the competition. Out of the box, Android TV is pretty impressive, sporting a nice home screen already populated with several apps both by Google and third-party developers to get users right into enjoying content. Among these apps are Google Play Movies, Google Play Music, and YouTube, making it easy for people already getting movies, TV, and music through Google to dive right in. To extend the functionality of the Nexus Player, users can download apps from the Google Play Store, though not all apps are Android TV optimized, and therefore some apps may not be available to download to the Player. However, there are several great apps available in the Play Store, including Kodi (formerly XBMC) that can greatly expand the abilities of the Nexus Player and allow users to truly enjoy the benefits of Android TV over a Chromecast or another platform. Speaking of Chromecast, the Nexus Player is Cast Ready, meaning you can cast content from your phone, tablet, or computer to the Nexus Player through Google Cast where it's available. I've only had one big gripe with the Nexus Player, and that is that the Nexus Player seems to have an issue managing running apps. Some days I'll come to watch something in the YouTube app, and the app won't display any parts of the interface that are necessary to actually watch videos. Furthermore, it seems that Android TV doesn't kill apps in the same way as regular Android, as I'll see decent amounts of lag if I move from game to game which should be eliminated if Android TV kills apps that are no longer being used. So to conclude, it seems that Google may need to further refine Android TV as a product, which means the Nexus Player with the latest version of Android TV as of the writing of this review, less-savvy users may want to steer clear of this device, though if you can learn to restart the device, you'll be fine. Regardless of the aforementioned issues, the Nexus Player is a fairly nice device, and with the optional controller accessory, it's a great device for families that don't necessarily want to spend money on a game console and a set-top box.

Great Start but missing some key features
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This device has a ton of potential and works great out of the box, but there are a few things missing that ended up being dealbreakers for me. 1 - no ethernet port, 2 - no regular usb ports, 3 - nearly no internal storage. It has the faster wifi standard with the 2x2 MIMO 802.11AC but nothing can truly replace ethernet when you are streaming almost entirely HD now a days. The small footprint is great and the remote it comes with works very well and is quite responsive, but when the Nvidia Shield TV launched it made this device look like a beta Android TV effort vs the mainstream Android TV device that is was intended to be. For the avg user looking to stream some google play content or netflix or youtube this is great, but if you are more of a power user and want to install KODI (formerly xbmc) or do a lot of rom emulation then you run into issues quickly between the lack of ports and internal storage and the inconsistency that is wifi. If you want something that is a step up from this device, check out Nvidia's Shield TV, it's starting at $200 but it truly is a great Android TV device and includes the gaming remote if you plan on using Android TV for a lot of gaming.

Greatest streaming device I've ever owned
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is definitely my favorite streaming device I've ever owned. I've owned a Roku 3, an Amazon FireTV, a Vizio CoStar, a Google Chromecast, and a WD TV, as well as an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One, and this is now my favorite device for streaming content. I mostly use it with Plex, but also Netflix and the few Google movies that I do own. The interface on this is the smoothest and quickest responding of any streaming device I've ever owned. The voice search is great as well and even works within some apps (I've tried it in Plex. Not sure about others). I have also cast material to it as if it were a Chromecast and that worked well. Overall I'd really recommend this device for streaming content.

Good product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We have a Chrome cast stick and it does work a lot better than that did, as you have access to content without needing a computer or device to cast from. The technology is great, but having the stick and also having a Roku make this not necessary. You can get a Roku cheaper and have the same results, minus the casting ability. If you don't have a Chrome stick or you can use it on another tv, this is great, though. Streaming is a breeze and the layout is very well thought out.Navigation is seamless. Overall a little expensive but a LOT better than Apples product!

Cable cutters REJOICE!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What can I say? I LOVE this thing! I am totally digging OTA HD tv by way of Antenna and streaming Netflix and Hulu on my Nexus Player. I will never go back to paying $120 for Satellite TV. The Nexus Player is fast, fluid and extremely smooth. No hick-ups, no issues. I actually bought another one for the bedroom. I bought a Roku 3 at first. Hated it. Very buggy. Would reset on its own. My Nexus Player has not crashed or given me a single issue since setting it up. I wish it had more internal storage memory, but a $12 OTG USB thumb drive took care of that. This little gem will not disappoint you if you are looking to jump off the high cost of pay cable / satellite tv.

Better than Roku
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to replace a laptop that I was using as a media center. I chose this over Roku and others because at $50, there isn't really anything else that offers the flexibility. With a micro USB to USB adapter and a powered USB hub you can add hard drives, keyboards and other devices. Negatives for me are small. Not all apps are available from the store, but you can get them with some work. Bluetooth audio is buggy, and just doesn't work with the Netflix app. Overall this little puck has met and exceeded my expectations.

Solid Product, Most Faults lie within the Apps
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I used a Google Chromecast for the longest time, and loved it. I saw this on sale and figured it would be just as good as a Chromecast, with added functionality. So far, I've found most of the issues I have with it to be App related, not Chromecast related. Pros: - Can cast most everything just like Chromecast. - Smooth and quick interface. - Normal Google OS updates, which means very frequent patching/fixing. - Android TV constantly adding new Apps all the time. - Sleek yet small controller and unit. Cons: - No way of closing apps easily (like on a phone) without a hard reset. - Cannot cast Spotify from your phone, and HBO Go doesn't work for all cable providers (COUGH COMCAST COUGH). Again, app issues not the device issues. - Unlike the Chromecast, you cannot (yet) use your own photos as the backdrops during the sleep mode. It only uses the normal images from the internet. Overall, I'm going to keepusing it. I'll keep my Chromecast plugged in for emergencies (Spotify/HBO Go currently) but I love the remote interface, and the recommendations for videos you might like. And as all Google Products, much like wine, they just get better with time.

Great, but not perfect.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, I'll admit, I am a Google guy, so I am already likely to prefer this to the other options out there. It's a great product, does everything you could ask of a TV box and does it all simply and well. The only downfall here is this device is kinda old now (2016) and lacks some of the latest tech, for me I'd like to see 4k support, and an ethernet port, hopefully in a updated version soon, but this device could be perfect for you if those things aren't needed. Actually I purchased a little USB to ethernet adapter to solve that problem so that can be done.

Great Little Device
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The first and most simple is the included remote control. (You'll find AAA batteries for it in the box.) It's a simple Bluetooth Smart remote, meaning that line of sight doesn't really matter and you can tuck the Nexus Player out of the way without worry. And it's a simple remote (and nearly a dead ringer for what Amazon's using with the Fire TV), with just a circular D-pad with selection button in the middle, back, play/pause and home. And note that the Home button sports a circle in the Android 5.0 fashion, and not a house. There's also a search button above the D pad. To search, you just tap that button, wait for the on-screen prompt — it's fast — and then speak. There's a mic in the remote that'll pick up your voice. (Unlike the Amazon Fire TV, you don't have to hold down the search button while you're speaking. Just press it once and you're done. The one thing I want from the remote that's not there is volume support. You're going to be ingesting a lot of media on the Nexus Player. But you're also going to have to scramble for your usual remote when things get too loud. Nexus Player gaming controller For another $39.99 you can pic up an ASUS gaming controller — and if you're going to do any gaming on the Nexus Player, we suggest you get one if you don't have another Bluetooth gaming pad laying around.

Great Android device....
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Use it mainly for Kodi but Netflix app works perfectly as well as Archos video player app for network movies streaming from PC . Use it only on HD TV's that are not "smart" and eliminating the need for cable boxes. The Chromecast feature allows streaming (casting) xfinity apps from tablets and smartphones. Purchased (2) Nexus players and with the existing Chromecast dongle, only need one Xfinity HD DVR but can cast to additional HD TV's saving $$$ per month for turning in the additional HD cable boxes.

Great Media Hub
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This device does a great job of giving you all the media you love from your phone on to the big screen, and then some. This device is running Google's latest Android Lollipop Operating System and it runs quite smoothly. However, there are a couple of limitations with this device. I am coming from Amazon's Fire TV to this device ( I switched because I love Google) and the Fire TV actually had 3 GB of RAM which I have come to miss with the Nexus Player. Also, the Nexus Player does not come with an on-board Ethernet port, so you will need to plug in a USB to Ethernet adapter to use Ethernet. There is only one USB port on this device, so if you want to use more than one USB device you could use a hub and plug in a keyboard & mouse, Ethernet adapter, or removable storage. If you do any modifying that requires more RAM you might find this is an annoying bottleneck that leaves you considering a different device.

Great start but needs more apps
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got the nexus player for $60. And for being an expensive Chromecast this product delivers everything it needs to. It lets me stream from my phone or laptop to it, but also lets me launch an app like hulu or Netflix, essentially blending the tv box with a Chromecast. For $60, well worth the somewhat limited app options for now.

Great product
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this product for a nice TV I had that just didn't happen to be a smart TV. I handed it over to my 13 year old who easily hooked it up and started watching Youtube, Netflix, and Hulu+. She had no problem figuring out how to make it work. That IS what teenagers are for, isn't it?

Works Great for Google Users
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking for a tv device that would support Google Play Music since I subscribe to that. I also wanted support for Netflix and CinemaNow so that I could access movies I own in UltraViolet. This device also has chromecast support built into it. It was very easy to setup and use and we're really enjoying it in our home.

Solid product!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have used almost every single streaming box available (smart TV's, smart blu-ray players, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, Roku 3, Chromecast, etc.) and Android TV has become my platform of choice. The performance is always great on these devices, and the interface is much more intuitive and good looking compared to options such as Roku. You have all your great streaming channels on Android TV (Netflix, Hulu, CinemaNow for Ultraviolet movies, etc.), except for Amazon Instant Video, which wasn't important to me considering it usually has similar content to Netflix. Wi-Fi performance is top notch via AC 5GHz Wi-Fi, videos starting almost instantly and I hardly ever saw buffering. The Nexus Player has improved considerably since released, and no longer is as buggy as many reviews would lead you to believe. If you have more money, I would get the NVIDIA Shield Android TV, which costs around $200 and is a considerably better product, but for only $50 at the time of this review, the Nexus Player is much better than a comparable Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, or Fire TV.
