Great camera. Nice hardware. Pure Android.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As someone who has been an Android user over the years, I am a big fan of this phone. There is a lot to like, and yes, some not to like, but overall, I like what Google has done here. Included with the phone itself are a 18W USB-C wall charger, USB-C charging cable, USB-C to USB-A adapter, standard SIM ejector tool, and a bare bones Quick Start guide. In typical Google fashion, everything is a clean design and minimal. Atypically, there are no headphones of any type included. I have no issue with this, as I (and I assume most others) have pairs that I prefer, and I appreciate the possible reduction in e-waste. The phone itself is undoubtedly a Google phone. It is a nice size, glass front and back, with metal sides, however, the sides are coated in a soft material of some kind (as are the backs of the white and orange versions of the phone) that gives it a real nice feel in the hand and provides a better grip. Design is, again, simple and clean. That said, there is a forehead, and it is not true edge to edge. Looks are objective, I get it, so some may like it, some may not. Not my favorite design, not “cutting edge,” but overall, I like it. The camera is, simply put, one of the best you will find. It may be the best. Pictures that come out of the phone are crisp, detailed and with accurate, yet vivid, colors. You can more or less point and shoot to get these results. That said, there are tons of settings to tweak, and the live HDR+ feature displays on the screen what the result will actually be. New exposure controls are something I have been messing with and like the results, and while the Night Sight mode has been great to play with for some time (with great results), I am blown away by the Astrophotography mode. I have not had a great deal of time to properly set up a tripod yet, but the results I have seen so far are simply nothing I expected from this going in. Stunning. Both Night Sight and Astrophotography use longer exposures to stack a lot of results (as most modes and phones do), but Astro is crazy. Perhaps a niche use, but if you have any interest in this kind of thing, look into it. Portrait mode also yields great results, and while they are not my thing, the front facing camera does work well and produces great-looking selfies. Not much else to say when it comes to pictures. If you take stills, you can’t do better. Now, when it comes to video, it is a little bit of a different story. The video that comes out of the phone is 4K and is indeed pretty good, but the sound is not stellar and quite honestly, other phones can give you better results. Still, I think for most people it should be fine. Check your use case on this one. “Specs” these days are not quite the important thing they once were when it came to cell phones, but they still matter. Here the Pixel 4 is fine. Again, not bleeding edge, but very good. The Samsung OLED panel in the phone looks truly fantastic and comes with a 90Hz refresh rate (a noticeable improvement over previous versions). Internally, there are 6GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 855 CPU, and 64GB of storage (in this model). It has stereo speakers that get quite loud and sound quite good. It is USB-C everything. Put that all together, and it is quite a nice package. It looks good, sounds good, and everything runs very smoothly. One of the reasons I prefer this Pixel over other devices is you get pure Android, straight from Google. No software bloat. No skins. Features come first, some of them exclusive. Updates come fast. Hands down, it is the best Android experience. Further, it is the best Google Assistant experience. The Pixel leverages its specs with that tight OS integration to offer quite a few new features. “Smooth Display” allows the phone to cycle between 60Hz and 90Hz refresh rates. The latter provides a noticeable smoothness upgrade when flipping through screens. There are multiple sensors in the forehead of the screen, one being a radar chip that can sense when motion occurs near the phone. “Motion sense” uses those in a few ways, one being directly with another feature called “Face Unlock.” Face Unlock uses your face to unlock your phone. The neat thing is that the phone senses when your hand is approaching and starts the process. It is very, very fast. While it is taking some time to get used to, I am really liking it. Additionally, Motion Sense can be used to swipe your hand over your phone to do various actions: skip songs in certain apps, snooze alarms…etc.. These are fun, but I am hoping that Google brings more uses to the table in the future. Of all the things I have written (and I can’t believe it has been this much), most of it has been positive, as I really like this phone, BUT, if there is one thing I have been disappointed with, it is the battery. The battery life is not bad, so much, but rather just not good. A lot of it can be managed with quick and wireless charging, but I just wish it were better. Again, check your uses case on this one as well. Ultimately, I really like the Pixel 4. It is feature-rich, has good specs, runs pure Android, and has the potential to get better with time. The battery is my only true issue, and perhaps a bump to the Pixel 4 XL is in my future (with the bigger battery)…

Great phone, but overpriced
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Honestly, this is a step back from the Pixel 3. There are no major differences and it's more expensive. In this case, I'd stick to last gen or wait until the Pixel 4a.
