For the price it's not that good. Have been having the screen freeze randomly which requires a reset to even use the phone. Charges slow and battery life is really bad. Have been having glitches since day one.

GOOD - Very reasonable price - Good hardware performance - Nice display - Great cameras - Has nearly all the new and current features you'd want BAD - Still no SD slot - Android continues to be Android and frequently changes things around The Google Nexus phones were prized because they offered the pure Android experience. You didn't have to worry about bloatware from the phone manufacture, or quirky user interface overlays. They offered proper hardware for their times with solid performance that made the phones run smooth. They didn't hide capabilities of the phone or lock the users out of certain features. Plenty of people continued using a Nexus phone for years, despite it being "outdated" because as a fully unlocked phone it could run customized ROM that kept them functional for a long time. As the successor to the Nexus phones, most of the above is still true about the Pixel line. I've used Android phones before, only Sony, which tend to also follow the idea of minimal bloatware and leaving the Android UI alone. First and foremost, at $600 for the 128 GB model ( at least as of this writing ) the Pixel 7 is very reasonably priced. Considering so many other premium phones start around $700 or more, you could consider it a bargain. The phone operates smoothly, it doesn't stutter, and it doesn't slow down. The screen looks great, it's very sharp, and has great blacks thanks to its OLED display. I'm not a big fan of the front camera making a "hole" in the top of the screen, but it's basically in the status bar section, so it's not too intrusive. Speaking of the cameras, they are very good. I don't like how the back bulges out to hold the rear camera lenses, though. I'm sure it allows more space to get a better camera system in there, but the raised edges makes it more likely to catch or scratch on things. If you get a protective case, it mitigates the damage potential, but it can still leave a lip that catches on your pocket when you put it in your pants. Battery life seems very good. I can usually get about three days per charge with how I use my phone ( obviously your use and habits will change the phone drain rate ). It has wireless charging and wireless charge sharing, which are features I like. LDAC support is also there for higher quality music over Bluetooth, again something I use and appreciate. Sadly, the Pixel still doesn't have an SD slot for additional storage. I'm sure it's Google's way of encouraging everyone to use Google Drive rather than keeping their data and files themselves. And this hints at the biggest problems with the phone. I'll try to keep personal biases to a minimum. Those who are coming from older Android 10 and 11 phones ( or even older ) will have to adapt to a few fairly significant changes in the OS, some not for the better. Certainly it's nice for an OS to grow and incorporate new features, but Google seems to have forgotten, or ignored, one of the core founding principles of Android was for total user customization. More and more, Google changes Android to have new "helpful" features on by default, or even required. Finding the toggle to turn them on or off is not always easy, and sometimes it can't be done. It's rather annoying needing to go through and re-disable pop-ups and notifications you thought you already turned off, but Android's permissions system and categories change fairly often, so they get flipped back on by default after some system updates. Even if you don't use voice commands or Google Assistant, it's gotten so integrated throughout the system that you'll still have to deal with prompts. I only connect my phone to my car's Bluetooth for phone calls and message alerts, but the phone still automatically started playing music every time I got in the car. I don't connect over USB, and my car doesn't even support Android Auto, but the phone still tried to launch it. Finding out how to stop that took quite a few internet searches, because you can't simply uninstall or disable Android Auto on the phone. The Monet color palette feature from Android 12 is another example. It's a nice idea, adding the option of accent colors to the UI and buttons instead of having one default system theme. Except it only gave the option to pick from a few pre-selected colors. You couldn't pick your own custom colors and you couldn't disable it. There was a fair amount of complaining about that, and you would think in Android 13, that would be fixed and control would be given back to the user. Except no, Google doubled down on it by simply offering more pre selected palettes based on your current home screen wallpaper. You still can't pick your own colors. You still can't disable it. If you use rotating daily wallpaper, you never know what you'll end up with. I don't want to give the wrong idea. Overall, I like the phone. All in all, it's a nice upgrade over my Xperia. If you've already used Android for a while, you'll be familiar with the quirks mentioned above. Just be aware in getting a Pixel phone, you're putting your phone solely at the mercy of Google. The upside is you should get updates and bug fixes sooner than others. But that also means you'll often get new bugs sooner than others.

    Google Pixel 7 (not pro)

Here is the most recent release of Google's Pixel phones and everywhere I see they talk about the PRO. Yes, we all know that would be the flagship device. But what about it's sibling? My prior device to this was a Galaxy S20FE and it has served me ok. I had to get that prior device because of a prior Galaxy phone issue. Because of the value prop, the 20FE was the best for the value without needing to shell out a grand for a new device. Fast forward two years and I now have the Pixel 7. No not the PRO, the normal one. I think the one that most people should really look into. Why? Well, in the past I had the first Google Nexus One phone back in the day when PDA's were just loosing it's usefulness due to phones being smarter and smarter. And that first Google phone was a dream to use! I then just used Google phones and stopped at the Nexus 6. Before the Pixel line, the Nexus was the line that Google used to test their software. There was no issues with that, but because Google didn't have dedicated hardware, the line eventually lost it's appeal. It was more an enthusiast's phone rather than appealing to the masses. I then lost interest and went onto other models as well. Now circling back to the Google universe, I can now say it is refreshing to see that Google has polished itself and is presentable to the masses. The usage of this phone is so simple to use and the form factor is pretty near perfect for me. The display, the software, the UI, the setup, was pretty much flawless for me. And because I have a Google ecosystem at home, this phone pretty much was sucked up automatically and I literally did nothing and my Google Home setup was already there. Well yes, you can thank the software, but the phone made it seemless. In using this in a normal day. I can say that the battery is impressive with this new processor that I am not familiar with. However praising everything thus far, I can say the form factor of the camera bump is an annoyance for me. It's just too dang big! But it's a style thing, in my opinion. The other thing worth mentioning is that I do miss the PRO version of the camera which this doesn't really have. But the pictures do come out terrific. The night mode is literally out of this world. Video I have tried at default resolution is really good, but the magic happens when you go HDR and increase the framerate. I do enjoy wireless charging and do wish these came with the charger for the price. If you have fast charging, why not include the brick? Fail in my eyes there. But overall as a non pro device and everyday user, this Pixel is a true win and upgrade from a two year old phone. The everyday usage of this phone is well done. My only other gripe is that the sounds are defaulted and you have to manually go to the application to change the notification tone to it. In my other devices, the application was smart enough to use it's packaged sound. Maybe it's a software thing? All in all, this is a big win in my opinion and hope many people get to use the Pixel and experience what Android has to offer. It is impressive!

    The best affordable phone

Google's next entry in the smart phone arena (Pixel 7) is an improvement in many ways, even if there are some things that are left to be desired. In my opnion, the Pixel 7 is the BEST phone in the "affordable" class. There are better phones out there with more features but you'll pay a premium for not much more. I'm coming from a Pixel 5, which I loved, so there will be a few comparisons in this review. Physically the phone is about half an inch taller and slightly wider than the Pixel 5, and weighs 1.2oz more (7.8oz vs 6.6oz). I want to be able to put the phone in my front pockets (including jeans) and while I can do that, the phone feels about as large as I want it to be for front pockets. The Pixel 5 feels a little better in that regard. The screen is beautiful and bright. It is certainly brighter than the Pixel 5 and of course a little larger. Motion is beautifully smooth. The phone feels snappy and I have had no issues with performance so far. I'm not sure if this is a phone thing or Android thing, but the phone does not have the three navigation buttons along the bottom edge (back, home and close apps). Instead you use gestures: drag up to return to home, drag left or right to go back depending on the app, drag up and hold to close apps etc). I still prefer the visible buttons, but it doesn't take too long to get used to using these gestures. The Pixel 7 also did away with a fingerprint "button" on the back and instead opted for finger placement on the front screen. It works well and I had no problems either adding fingerprints or using the fingerprint scanner to unlock. I know all the rage with phones is how good the cameras are. For me the Pixel 7 is a mixed bag. On the one hand the camera is clearly better than that on the Pixel 5. This non-Pro Pixel 7 does not have a physical zoon, but I found the digital zoom to be significantly better than the Pixel 5. Where this new camera shines is in the intelligence of choosing the mode to use depending on conditions. The low light capabilities are impressive. I took test shots of various things in various lighting without touching any of the settings and the pics all came out very well. The phone app adjusted settings without user intervention for the subject and it works well. On the other hand, I really don't like the recent movement toward protruding cameras that sit well above the plane of the phone. It just gets in the way. I much prefer the flatness of the Pixel 5 in this regard. One small thing I do really like is that google placed the front facing camera in the center top rather than left top. No big thing, but I like it. I had no issues with Verizon phone service using the Pixel 7 and I live in a more rural area.

    Worth Serious Consideration

So, I am coming over to Pixel from another brand. The experience has been interesting as I have never had a Pixel Phone before, However, I have always had Android phones for the most part. This will be my comparison and experience. First impression out of the box feels like a solid build and maybe a little weightier than my current phone. The glass back somehow resists fingerprints. Initial set up went smooth cloning my old phone to the Pixel via USB C cable. There was some updating and I was off and running. Had to learn how to use this Phone but I will address that later. The first glitch I ran into was watching a YouTube music video. The volume was Very weak. I found the bottom speaker had no volume at all and the top earpiece speaker barely had volume. I decided to check for more updates and thus, a security update was available. Proceeded to install and checked after a few hours and phone was still installing. Left on over night and found installed next morning so I rebooted the phone and checked all features again and found I now had full volume out of both speakers. The sound is now actually pretty good and nice loud volume. The low end and midrange frequencies are lacking. High end treble appears to be The norm for this phone but satisfied with the volume output which is quite good. Now going through a pure android experience vs a 4.1 UI from another brand was slightly disappointing. I am still researching this to see if there is any tweaking whatsoever that I am missing. My other phone’s UI allowed me to customize folders and apps with color schemes. All folder and app drawers for the Pixel are one color. Nothing exciting. I barely use the Gmail app due to the amount of emails I receive at times. Gmail will not allow you delete all at once and that to me is a time waster. Do not disturb turned on allowed me to be disturbed. I figured out which app was being Naughty and tried to disable some of the apps features (button in app was blue Indicating it was turned on) I could not turn it off. Only choice was to force stop. Now I do realize this could be a compatibility issue with the app and android 13, Not necessarily the Pixels’ fault. The Good Stuff: Camera is amazing, especially being a non pro phone version. Really liked that I could erase objects or people in the pictures without any noticeable changes. Clarity of the camera is very good. I did have bit of a learning curve at first. The screen does get very bright which I like in a phone. I am enjoying the 5G UC connection with TMobile that this phone is utilizing. Blazing Fast connection!! See Pic. Speed test may vary depending on where your at and interference. I thought I might be disappointed going to a slightly smaller 6.3” phone from 6.7” plus phone but I actually like the smaller form factor in my pocket and difference in size is minimal. I am finding android 13 is very fluid and smooth and worth the experience. I am finding once the phone learns your preferences it pretty much is fast at executing the commands. For me, one of the most noticeable features is the voice recognition. So far I have not had any strange words or sentences when using voice recognition dictation. I was constantly making corrections with my previous phone which again is a time waster. Unless you really need the pro version, The 7 will be more than adequate For most users.
