Customers are saying

Customers regard the Pixel 7a 5G 128GB (Unlocked) highly for its excellent camera quality, impressive battery life, and ease of use. Many appreciate the screen size and find it offers great value for the price. While some users miss the headphone jack and note occasional heating issues, the positive feedback on the camera and overall performance outweighs these concerns. The phone's design and smooth refresh rate are also frequently praised.

Phone is great but no where did the information that came with or described/advertised the pixel 7a indicate that a 30 watt charger was preferable and no one whom we dealt with at Best Buy shared that information with us.

It works... still a lot to learn with this device, it is not as user friendly as an iPhone but doesn't cost as much as an iPhone either. So there are pros and cons.

Transfer of contacts from iPhone was poorly executed by store personnel. When I I ran it again it transferred all names and 1 phone number for each name. Phone doesn't seem to be able to store multiple numbers per name.

Best ever of the "A" series and worth the upgrade

This Pixel 7a is my 4th Pixel phone and the 3rd in the “A” series. Normally I get new phones about two years apart, so this is quite a quick turnaround from my current Pixel 6a and I was interested in finding out if it was worth the upgrade. My conclusion, if you want to skip the details that follow, is that, yes, the 7a has improvements and added features that are well worth upgrading even from a phone as recent as the Pixel 6a! Unboxing the phone and initially setting it up is easy as far as the procedure is concerned, but can also be very time-consuming if you have as many apps and connected devices as I have. This is unavoidable, although Google has made it about as easy as possible while maintaining security and flexibility. For anyone who has previously had a Pixel phone the procedure is pretty much what you are used to. The 7a is virtually identical to the 6a in size and appearance and has the same screen size and resolution. This is good because the 6a is about at the limit of what I’m willing to carry in my pocket all day. However, the 7a has a high 90Hz refresh rate that makes screen animations, videos, games, etc. noticeably smoother than the 6a. The screen is also brighter, making it easier to see in bright sunlight than my 6a. This will be a big help when taking photos outside in the daytime. The phone has the same “Tensor” main chip as is found on the Pixel 7, which is the next generation from the one found on the Pixel 6 and 6a. In combination with the increase to 8Mb of RAM, this makes the overall performance snappier than the older models. On the downside, it has picked up another half ounce (15g) in weight. Another big change for the 7a is the upgraded camera sensor, apparently the first time this has been updated in a number of product cycles. I’m not up on the latest camera tech, but I can say that the upgrade has made what is considered one of the best smartphone cameras even better. I haven’t had the chance to take a lot of photos or videos, but what I have tried looks very good. The performance of the Pixel camera in low light has always been especially impressive, and that has fortunately not changed with the 7a. There are also some new/improved camera features such as the ability to “unblur” a photo, remove unwanted objects, and what they call “Super Res Zoom” that is better than what has previously been offered. It’s certain that upgrading from a 12.2MP sensor to a 64MP (!) is a huge improvement. Likewise, the “selfie” camera has been updated and enhanced. An important new feature is that the phone finally supports face unlock! This has been a long time coming, is easy to set up, and works well. For security reasons, face unlock is limited to the master device unlock; for secured apps you will still have the option to set up and use fingerprint unlock. The under-screen fingerprint reader has been improved, which is a good thing, as the previous implementation could be inconsistent under some conditions. The best new feature for me on the 7a is wireless charging. I had this on my old Nexus 5 phone, which predated the Pixel branding. Recent flagship Pixels have this feature but it’s never before been included with the “A” series. This requires a wireless charging station such as the Pixel Stand that is available from BestBuy and I’ll be running out to get one ASAP. Wireless charging pads are showing up in more and more places such as cafes, built into cars, etc., so it’s definitely the future of charging and saves wear and tear on the USB connector. I should also mention that, like my 6a, they no longer supply a charging module with the phone. Again, this should not be a deterrent since most of us have charging bricks all over the place, plus all the other places where there is a USB port that can be used. And now, with wireless charging, it’s even less of an inconvenience to not get one in the box. This covers the major changes that affected me when coming from a Pixel 6a, and of course there are many more differences that you would if coming from an earlier Pixel phone. To sum it up, in my opinion the major new features – such as face unlocking and wireless charging – make an upgrade from the 6a to the 7a well worth the time and expense, and should be a real "no-brainer" if you have an earlier iteration of the “A” range of Pixel phones. And of course it’s a real winner compared to any other smartphone at this price point.

PROS: - Amazing cameras - Same Tensor G2 as in the 7 Pro - 90Hz refresh rate - Wireless charging - Supports BOTH physical and eSIM CONS: - No headphone jack - Gorilla Glass 3 (came out in 2013) - Gets REALLY hot == The Physical == The Pixel 7a has a metal frame and camera "visor", but the back of the phone is plastic (instead of glass). I don't mind the back being plastic, especially since the 7a has wireless charging (unlike the 6a). The screen is using an older version of Gorilla Glass 3, which came out in 2013, but I use screen protectors on my phone so while it doesn't bug me, it's worth noting. Speaking of the display, the screen bezels are on the "larger" size for 2023. The display can go up to 90Hz, but the feature is disabled out of the box. You need to go into the settings to turn it on (which I HIGHLY suggest you do). Colors look great and the display can get bright enough to use comfortably outdoors on a sunny day. If you like using wired headphones with your phones, you might want to pass on the Pixel 7a, as your only option would be to use a USB-C dongle. While Google did remove the headphone jack, they did add the ability to use a physical AND eSIM, which is great for traveling. == The Cameras == I'm still so impressed with how amazing the photos and videos are from the Pixel 7a. It's great to take flagship-level pictures on a mid-range device. While I'm not big on selfies, the front-facing camera is amazing (I love it for quick video calls). There are two different modes for video stabilization: standard (the default) and active (great for if you're running while taking videos). The active mode works VERY well, a feature I'm going to appreciate even more as Summer approaches. This is more software related than the cameras, but Google has two AMAZING features you'll want to take advantage of with the Pixel 7a: "Magic Eraser" and "Photo Unblur". Have kids and/or pets that won't stay still for photos? The "Photo Unblur" feature does exactly what you would expect (it still so cool to see it work). "Magic Eraser" is a super-easy photo editing feature that can remove people/things from your photos. == Performance == The Pixel 7a has the same SoC as the Pixel 7/Pro, so expect flagship performance at half the price. I don't notice any hiccups or slowness in any app I normally use (browsers, MS Office, streaming apps, SEVERAL games). The excellent performance from the SoC, paired with the 90Hz display, makes the Pixel 7a amazing to use. Games look and feel amazing, thanks to the high refresh rate display and the Tensor G2. There isn't a game on the Google Play store that this phone can't play! My only complaint about the performance is that the phone will get quite hot if you push it with demanding games. If I play CoD or Honkai: Star Rail, the phone (especially the frame) will get uncomfortably hot after about 5-10 minutes of use. I use a case which helps, plus this might be fixed with future software/firmware updates from Google. Battery life is "decent". If you are a heavy user, or play a lot of games, you won't get a full day out of the battery (thankfully it DOES have wireless charging). I'm an average/light user (stream music, occasional doomscrolling, and some games for a few minutes) and I can end the day with a little over 30% of battery remaining. == BOTTOM LINE == It wasn't too long ago that if you wanted the best SoC, cameras, and displays you had to go with the expensive flagship phones. Now, you can get those important features in a mid-range phone. I've used other budget/mid-range Android phones over the years, but none of them made me feel like I was using a flagship phone like this one does.
