Customers are saying

Customers regard the Pixel 7a 5G 128GB (Unlocked) highly for its excellent camera quality, impressive battery life, and ease of use. Many appreciate the screen size and find it offers great value for the price. While some users miss the headphone jack and note occasional heating issues, the positive feedback on the camera and overall performance outweighs these concerns. The phone's design and smooth refresh rate are also frequently praised.

Bad modem. Contacted Google twice and AT&T 4 times about not getting notifications. Yesterday I was out and about which was the first time I used data outside of my personal Wi-Fi network, and had so many issues browsing the web. Did research on this phone and found out that Google is still using a subpar modem in their devices. I’ve had a Pixel 7a, a 7 and a 7 Pro and I’ve returned them all - this 7a is going back today. Never had an issue with my Pixel 6 as many have disclosed. Google can brag all about the camera, but without the basics of a smartphone, you’re left without a working device on cellular towers. Pixel 7 line is definitely worth bypassing.

Pretty much since it came out, I’ve been daily driving this phone’s bigger brother - the Pixel 7. I’ll be comparing the two in more detail throughout this review but right off the rip, I’ve gotta say that the 7a really gives the 7 a run for its money. Reviewers said the same in regards to the 7 compared to the 7 Pro when they came out and honestly, I think the 7 and 7a are even closer competitors. If you’re on the fence as to wether the 7a can hang as your daily driver, rest assured - it absolutely can; and I would even recommend it over the 7 unless you’re particular about a few key things that we’ll address in a second Let’s start with build quality. The Pixel 7a has a metal frame and camera bar, with a plastic back, and glass screen. The screen is Gorilla Glass 3 and feels really nice. I obviously didn’t go out of my way to test durability, but the couple of times it fell out of my way-too-shallow pockets didn’t result in any scratches or chips on/in any part of the phone. It’s worth noting the back plastic isn’t quite perfectly aligned with the frame (at least on my unit - YRMV) which results in a bit of a lip between the two. It bothered me for about two days before I got over it, and the buddies I showed it to didn’t really notice it at all. So while I feel it’s worth mentioning, it’s only a minor issue. The build quality on the 7 and 7a mainly differ in the following ways. The back of the 7a is plastic vs the 7’s glass. I’m pretty attentive to these sorts of things and I can barely tell the difference in feel (aside from the aforementioned lip, which isn’t present on the 7). The 7a has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance compared to the 7’s IP68. Is the a difference? Yes. Are you likely to notice? Probably not unless you go swimming with your phone. The camera bar on the 7a is substantially shorter than the one on the 7. It’s almost flat to the back. Overall with build quality, unless you’re coming from a more expensive device, you’ll probably never notice the difference between the two. But how’s the performance on the 7a? Well it’s got the same SOC (brain) as the more expensive Pixel 7 - and in my testing, I couldn’t tell a difference. The 7a was fast, responsive, and in my day to day messaging, web browsing, and photo taking, I noticed no issues. I did go into the developer settings and speed up the animations to make it feel faster but that was out of preference - not need. I used it for a while normally and it was plenty snappy. Let’s talk about the cameras. I’m going to keep this section extremely simple. Every year, the Pixel lineup has amongst the top 3 camera systems in any smartphone. It’s place in that top three may vary depending on who you ask but it’s always top three. I took a couple pictures on both the 7 and 7a and much to my surprise, I actually preferred the images on the 7a most of the time. And it wasn’t just me. I showed a couple side by side to friends (who had varying levels of photography experience) and the general consensus is, the 7a is as good or better than the 7. I did a total of 6 comparisons and out of those: 2 preferred the 7, 3 preferred the 7a, and one couldn’t tell the difference. That is pretty darn impressive. The displays are the last major point I want to mention. The display on the 7a is great. 1080p, 90hz (make sure to enable that in the settings because it’s off by default), OLED - with an always on display. It’s bright enough to see outdoors and until you start to look at it from about a 170 degree angle (which… why would you?), it maintains color accuracy and doesn’t show any banding. Comparing it to the Pixel 7, I do actually prefer the display in the more expensive phone. I can’t quite put my finger on why but something about the colors makes the 7 more appealing to me. The screen on the 7a is marginally smaller (0.2 inches) and the bezels are slightly thicker but overall, it’s still a great screen - even in comparison to its (literally) bigger brother. The display on the 7a is great and I would have no complaints if I wasn’t directly comparing it to the 7. That last sentence pretty much sums up my entire opinion on the Pixel 7a. It’s a fantastic phone. It’ll get most of if not all the same software features as the 7 and 7 Pro. It’ll get updates for at least 3 years. The cameras are great. The display is great. The battery life is solid. The price (albeit higher than last year) is right. The Pixel 7a is a great phone. Now that my review period is over, I’ve decided to switch back to my Pixel 7. Not because it’s that much better than the 7a - but because I like those few things a little bit more *and I already have it*. If I was starting from scratch and had to decide between the 7 and the 7a - considering at the time of review you can get a 7a and a year’s worth of service on a cheap carrier like Mint Mobile for less than the price of a 7, I think the 7a is the obvious choice for most people. If this phone is on your radar, get it. I’m thoroughly convinced you’ll love it.

Is it truly a mid-range phone? NOPE!

It’s crazy to me how good mid-range phones have gotten. For example, this “mid-range” Google Pixel 7a is good enough to make me forget about most flagship models. I also have a Samsung Galaxy A54 from a year or so to compare on a few things. Here are a few things I like: Processor: This is the same processor as in the flagship Pixel line, and it works amazingly. It’s plenty quick and smooth in nearly any app I’ve tried…but it works especially well with any and all the Google apps (Maps, Gmail, Messaging, etc.). You can tell that, very much like Apple and it’s iPhones, the hardware was meant specifically for the software, as opposed to a broad range CPU trying to make due in a third-party operating system. For example, installing an app from the Play Store takes less time on the Pixel than any other phone I’ve sampled, including the newest Samsung flagships. There were a few slow-downs, particularly in any app or webpage that hosting a lot of advertisements. And a few apps that hadn’t been updated in a while also seemed a bit slower to open. But all recent apps worked like a breeze. As it stands, I really don’t have any reason to deduct points from the phone because the issues are more app or webpage-based. Camera: I’m going to start by mentioning that I’m not a professional photographer by any means. The shots I take are mainly of me and my dogs, along with a scattering of people and places. In that sense, I feel like I’m your typical cell phone camera user. And if you’re like me, then you’ll find this camera has everything you need and then some. The Night Mode is excellent—much brighter and way more detailed that anything on my A54. And while more and more companies are coming out with their own brands of this software, I feel like Object Eraser is ahead of all of them. Those with pets know how hard it can be to get a good, clear shot of them…and sometimes when you get a good shot, there junk in the background. Object Eraser has cleared several of my photos from random feet or garden supplies. And the speed of the app itself is much, much snappier than my A54. Pictures are taken and processed as fast as any phone I’ve ever seen. Look, there’s a ton of high-end photography stuff in this phone’s camera, much of it I doubt I’ll ever use. But, if having a good camera is one of your ‘must haves’ when purchasing a new phone, then you’re in luck here. Google Services: The Google integration going on with this phone is top-notch, and Google offers many services on the Pixel 7a that you can’t find on other brands. The “Hold for me” function works great and allows you to focus your attention elsewhere, for example. And the “Live Captions” service uses the Google voice model, which is installed directly on the phone, to dictate any audio from your phone. Even when or if these services become available to other brands, I doubt they’ll work as well as they do here. Oh, and don’t forget you’ll get Google’s fastest updates on their Pixel phones too! I hate waiting for updates that I know are already published. As awesome as I think the phone is, there are a few things I wish it had. Chief among my wants would be a bigger screen, or at least an option for a bigger screen. The screen tech looks and functions great for me. The resolution is fine for a phone (1080p, or full HD), and the refresh rate of 90hz is adequate for my use. But I too often found myself inadvertently swiping ‘back’ while doing something else on the screen. And when I increased the font and object sizes to my liking, I found that they took up lots more room on the screen. This phone has a 6.1” screen, and I think my personal sweet-spot is closer to 6.3-6.5”. I won’t take points off the rating though, as I knew the phone size going into my order. If it’s too small, that’s on me. All-said, after using the phone for the last week, I can honestly say that no mid-range phone has business being this good. When I think ‘mid-range’, I’m thinking an archaic processor, old software with few updates, and hardware that was probably leftover from 5 years ago. This phone has changed my whole perception on every single one of those. Even at a not-so-tiny sum of $500, I’m feeling like this phone is a steal and would last the average consumer several years or more.

As a current Pixel 7 Pro user, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of comparable features that were present in the small sized Pixel 7a. The box comes with the standard universal USB-C charger and USB-C to USB doggle. Setup is super easy and you have the option to import your settings from another Pixel device or even another Android or Apple as well. I like the smaller feel of the phone and at the same time having the same processing power as the larger Pixel 7 and Pixel Pro devices. The adaptive brightness works great for viewing in bright sunlight and toning it down at night. Wallpaper settings are easily acceptable by long pressing the home screen. There are only a few standard included, but you have an unlimited selection from the Play store. Connecting to a mobile or WiFi network is seamless and Google's adaptive network connectivity has the ability to efficiently manage your connection to provide the best speed and battery life. Calls are clear on the phone itself, or through the speaker. The one compromise is that you get a slight downgrade in camera features from the larger Pixel devices but it still takes great photos. Super Res Zoom lets you easily configure your pictures to close up and far away. Long exposure is a neat feature that adds a cool motion blur to action shots. Real Tone and Photo Unblur is what really makes Pixel photos unique. People's facial features look super realistic under different light settings. Unblur can take those unsteady photo shots and make them look professional. Low light pictures look incredibly accurate through the Night Sight option. Security is top notch feature as well and you the ability to use a pin, fingerprint or face unlock. The fingerprint reader works surprising well once you have it configured. It comes with a basic Google One account that gives you 15 GB of online backup storage and VPN for one device. For $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year you can get 100 GB online backup storage and VPN for multiple devices. There are additional packages that will give you even more backup storage if needed. Battery life is great with the features of Adaptative Battery and Extreme Battery Saver if you are going to be away from a charging option for an extended period. I can easily get two days of battery life with moderate usage throughout the day. You can set charging for quick charges on the go or Adaptive Charging for charging slower overnight for extended battery life. You get most all of the features of the Pro device for half the price which makes this an excellent overall value.

I was really excited when the Pixel 7a got here. I'm not a heavy phone user, I'd say moderate. I've been looking forward to trying out something new. (my old phone is 3 - 4 years old) This Pixel is pretty nice! It's a nice size, not too big and definitely not too small. The screen is very sharp and fluid, scrolling is wonderfully smooth. The brightness could be better in the sun but I can at least see it, my old phone, not soo much. There is e extra dim button which is great at night, so could there be a brightness boost button as well? Battery life is fine, hasn't been improved much I guess. My old phone would have around 45% in the mornings when I charge it, The Pixel has 50, maybe it will improve as the phone learns. (still plenty for me) Wireless charging is a great option to have and wired charging is fast, just make sure you have powerful enough chargers! About an hour and a half to charge fully. I'm still figuring out this phone. There are soo many features. Always on display is nice and handy. The camera is Amazing! Super fast to take a picture and wide angle is a great bonus finally. Night mode works very well. No more dark grainy photos for me! The magic eraser is something I just can't get over, it is magic! The software just works soo much better. Seem to be much smarter, apps work together. (one example - I took a picture to send to someone and when I opened messages, it asked if I wanted to attach that Pic! What a pleasant surprise) it keeps thinking ahead of me. Build quality could be a bit better. First thing I noticed taking it out of the box is the back cover has a sharp edge to it. Like it's a fraction of a mm too big. Also being made of shiny plastic, will scratch like crazy. I'll have it in cases, so not too much of an issue. The $500 still seems a bit high for an "entry level" phone. $1000 for phones tho-absurd! Should be classed as a mid level. However you do get an awful lot of phone. Hope this guy lasts for 4 years.

Do not buy if you plan to use on the T-Mobile Network or one of its MVNO's. Just like the 6th series, the 7th series has the infamous networking problem. Because of Google's choice of internal modem, 6th and 7th series Pixels have poor connectivity.

Excellent! Everything the Pixel 6a wasn't...

I loved the IDEA of the Pixel 6a but it was a buggy mess, fingerprint reader intermittent, runaway heat issues and the worst-data connection randomly dropped. I went through 3 of them. When the 7a came out I immediately traded in my 6a. Wow, what a difference. Essentially the same size but now with 90hz display (with increased brightness) and wireless charging. It has been working flawlessly. Fingerprint reader is spot on and the phone runs cools. Moving to the Tensor 2 and going from 6gb to 8gb ram shouldn't make a huge difference - but it does. Never a hiccup and the screen is smooth as silk. Pixels have no software bloat which helps. Camera is even better and now has the anti-blur feature. Digital zoom is decent up to 3x but quickly deteriorates. My wife has a Galaxy A54 which is a direct competitor but in my book not even close. The A54 is a brick in comparison. They only thing I wish were better is the battery. I run the display at 90hz so that sucks more power. I keep a 20Watt wired and 15watt wireless charger at work so I am in no danger of having a dead phone but if left off charger I am down to 20% at the end of my work day. Not bad but if an emergency came up I could go through that 20% in no time. So I keep the battery up just in case. Other than that a fantastic phone!
