When you think of a Mid-range device, I would not consider this device as mid-range. The Pixel 7a keeps up with all my tasks...emails....youtube....and even playing the occasional COD. I don't use the camera all that often because I use the 7a as my work device. However, in the times I have taken pictures on the phone I have found that the unblur and magic eraser are the editing tools I use the most when editing my photos. I feel that the device is just the right size at 6.1 inches. When squeezing the phone you don't hear any cracking or give. I like that there is wireless charging, and when I go to charge it at night I am still left with 18%. For the money, I like to know that I have a reliable and capable phone. I also like that because of the software updates and build quality that this is a device I am not going to have to replace any time soon.

I love this phone! No, seriously. I love it! Straight outta the box I was surprisingly impressed. I wasn't sure what to expect, except that the Pixel would be "different." Yet, not in a bad way. But rather, in a good way. A very good way! I've owned various other brands of mobile phones. You know the ones. And I can seriously say that I'm considering swapping out my new S23 for this Pixel 7a. Both are good phones, but I've fallen 'in love.' The apps are familiar, there's just more of them (installed by default). So getting acclimated to the Pixel has been easy. Navigating and using this Google Pixel's features is smooth, effortless, and quite simply, "flows." The phone is so responsive! No sluggishness or delay, so far. But we'll see how that goes with future updates to the Android operating system. An integral aspect of this phone I was most interested in trying out, was the camera. Question needing answered: how good IS the Google Pixel 7a at taking and editing photos, videos, etc? I'd heard, and read, great things. Well, in a word - the camera is awesome! More than living up to the claims. The 'Magic Eraser' is amazing. So is the 'Unblur' feature and 'Night Sight.' I'm having oodles of fun playing around with 'Time-Lapse,' too! I'll definitely be able to use this camera for my photography book. Call quality is outstanding! Honestly. It was like the person I was speaking with, was right there in the same room with me. I have been told that I came through "loud and clear" by the people I talked to, too. There's even a 'Call Screen' feature to help avoid spammers. I like having the option to use Face or Fingerprint Unlock, or both for added security and convenience. Google One even has their one VPN, should you want to make use of that. I already have that protection through another company, but may use Google's VPN with my new Pixel. Battery life was pretty good, above the average, given all-day usage which is my usual. I watch a lot of videos, or listen to them playing in the background as I do my work. This Google Pixel does have an 'Adaptive Battery' which learns which apps you use most often and adjusts battery power usage accordingly. You can also turn on the 'Extreme Battery Saver,' but I prefer not to. It's easy enough to just re-charge wirelessly on one of my Qi fast charging devices. This Google Pixel 7a is an extremely well-made mobile phone. Pleasant to hold in your hand. The scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass display is beautiful; colors are bright and clear. The phone is water and dust resistant (this being particularly important to me as I live in the southwest). The only "downside" I can think of is that the screen really does show your fingerprints. Not a deal-breaker, by any means. But be prepared to use those electronic wipes more often. The 'Adaptive Brightness' for the screen is on by default. Sometimes it works okay, at other times it just doesn't work for me, so I turn it off in Settings. Now, I prefer the 'smaller' size mobile phones. Although I've owned different sized ones, too. My new car has a charging nook to rest your cell phone in, and both my S23 and this Pixel fit in that space, just right. I now think about that when choosing a new phone. I've ordered, and am waiting to receive, the pretty coral phone case for my new Pixel 7a. Can't hardly wait! It's almost a shame to cover up the phone with a case cause the exterior surface is so smooth and shiny, and the colors are lovely. Would I recommend? Wholeheartedly! Do consider this Google Pixel 7a as a viable, VERY reasonably priced, option alongside the many other variety of choices for mobile phones.

    Pure Google on the cheap

Pixel phones differentiate themselves from Samsung, LG, Motorola and the like by being the pure Android experience like the early Nexus phones. While the other companies do bring with them some enhancements and creature comforts not originally baked in by Google, that comes at the cost of potential system slow downs AND delays in rolling out the newest OS updates. While some companies have been getting fast at rolling the updates out. They are usually infused with a great deal of bloatware. Pixel has been the best way to use Android as it was intended and because it is Android you can make it how you want it from their clean starting point. The 'a' series phones have been a great way to get users on a budget into a phone with nearly identical features and performance without breaking the bank. For a long time in the early days of cell phones the race was to get as small as possible while still remaining usable. And phones were getting near ridiculous levels of small. Well that race was deemed null and void with the intro of smartphones/pocket computers. The new race was getting as much screen into the hand without it being unwieldy. I for one am tired of giant phones that look like I'm smuggling a book in my pocket. If a PHONE screen is too large to use with one hand. It is too big. Tablets have their place. Phablets have their place. Can a phone be a phone? The 7a has, in my opinion and hand size, the perfect dimensions for me. Between the gestures and size I can use the phone almost completely one handed. I wish all manufacturers would stop the trend of the LARGEST phones get the best tech. The only benefits for the larger phone should be those who WANT the best screen and by virtue of the additional space the larger battery. The compromise of settling for inferior hardware because one wants a smaller phone is a horrible reason to have to compromise. Aside from the fact that the camera and charging speeds are the main differences from the older siblings of the 7 series of Pixels. I see it as a step in the right direction for size vs features. Having the smaller battery, I wish Google would have gone with the faster charging to top off through the day when the phone is seeing heavy usage. But under moderate usage I am fine getting through the day for now. Only time will tell how well the battery holds up. The build quality is solid for a phone with a plastic back. I thought it would be a fad when apple made a phone with a glass back as fragile as a the front screen. And after seeing phone after phone with shattered glass front and back the questionable design had to catch on and eventually everyone needed to do it especially since the advent of wireless charging. I welcome the plastic back, but I wish it weren't glossy. It's a fingerprint disaster and I can see it getting scratched up rather quickly without a case. A frosted/matte finish might not look as sparkly, but I would've preferred that. The screen resolution for the size is perfectly acceptable. The screen seems a bit cooler than most the Samsung phones I have used. But it is sharp and even when the font is knocked down to it's smallest size I can read everything perfectly fine, even with my aging eyes. Scrolling is smooth once the 90hz is turned on (it is set to 60hz by default so that should be one of the first things you should change when you are up and running). I would prefer the borders weren't as thick, but I don't notice it after a while. And it does make it easier to tap things at the edge of the screen unlike those cursed curved screens that Samsung likes to use. I did not like pressing things that were one those curved edges. I found that the Fingerprint reader is fast for me w/ just 1 finger registered. Register 2 and it's much quicker. I have all 4 fingerprint profiles used but only 2 actually fingers used. Having the camera on the 7 Pro and SD card reader (i will never let that want go) would have made this the perfect phone for me even with the smaller battery. Carrying an portable battery bank would be well worth it. The camera on the 7a is no slouch. Images were sharp but the slightly shallow depth of field means capturing several people not standing next to each other were less than spectacular. The zoom isn't something you want to take print quality photos with due to the lack of a telephoto lens, but it isn't completely unusable. Low light performance and the ability to have less noise than some Samsung phones was better than expected for a budget phone camera. Autofocus and image stabilization in videos (4k @ 30fps) performed quite well, but color and detail are not as natural and clear as the photos. Some have argued that the cost of the 7 when on sale would negate the 7a, but it won't be long before the 7a will be just as discounted making it even more of a viable option for those looking for a powerful phone that they don't have to compromise due to budget. High performing budget phones are always welcome and force flagships to be better. I would venture to guess putting most all of the best features into the full range of phones would severely cut into the sales of the top end $$$$ models and no company would want to risk that. So we will likely not see that happen until screens are no longer a thing.

is Pixel A series the best budget phone again?

KEY POINTS: - wireless charge added (only 7.5w) - refresh rate upgrade: 90hz - ram upgrade - 8gb - camera is amazing, software is better - cheaper than a flagship but full of basic features Is the pixel A series still the budget friendly device to beat this year? Yes, yes it is. That’s assuming you’re used to the Google Pixel ecosystem or at least android. I have had a lot of phones over the years, and especially recently as I have been testing different models and makers to see which I prefer the most. I will say, I am partial to the galaxy phones and one UI but there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with a Pixel, and in some ways, they are better. So if you know google pixel is the eco system that you prefer, then you will for sure love the pixel 7a. ESPECIALLY if you’re coming from the older 6a. I had a 6a for a while and didn’t like it as much for a few key things. Wireless charge was missing, the smaller ram and poorer cameras to name a few. But I think Google really stepped up the 7a (and earned the 50 dollar price bump) to keep its reign as the best budget friendly phone of the year. NEW UPGRADES: There are a lot of changes from the 6a to the 7a that you can look up for details, but I’ll highlight the ones that are most useful to me and are also just great features of the pixel 7a. Obviously, the first feature to note is the wireless charging being added. I am very happy to see this added but I was a little disappointed to see that it’s only 7.5w charging. This makes charging wireless take a bit longer than you may be used to with a flagship phone. For comparison to itself, the pixel 7a charges at 18w plugged in. So assume wireless will take twice as long as plugging it in. This is fine if you sit at a desk and just want to top up a bit while you work, but don’t be expecting a quick charge before running out of the house or getting any large amount of charge during a short car ride. Still, the option is nice to have and is better than nothing. Just worth noting the speeds I think. The screen also got a refresh rate bump up from the 6a and means smoother scrolling and better response. Some people get really into this, personally, I don’t mind turning it off to save battery but if you’re a heavy scroller and need that butter smooth scroll, changing the refresh rate to 90 should be a welcome change for you. Sticking with hardware upgrades, the Ram got a bump as well. Now with 8gb of ram you should be able to do more multitasking and faster processing then on a pixel 6a (and other phones for that matter.) CAMERA Obviously the camera got an upgrade as well, but if we step away from just comparing it to last year's model and look at it compared to this year's options from all phone makers, this camera is STILL in the top list. Side by side you can notice differences in the 7a to the 7pro but if you’re not looking at them side by side you wouldn't notice anything wrong with the pixel 7a images. Google has such amazing software post processing that makes pro photographers like me worry about our jobs. Sure I can see issues and still fully believe a photo editor can always edit a photo better than a machine, but for the average user, the results from the pixel 7a camera are definitely going to make you smile. The processing done by google is better than other brands in my opinion and the 7a photos look better than my 2 year old flagship galaxy. OTHER NOTES The pixel 7a runs on the latest android and says it will receive support and updates for 5 years so you should be able to get a good life out of this phone. 500 bucks over 5 years is 100 dollars a year for your phone. Not bad. OVERALL: Overall, after using this phone for a week as my daily driver, I am really impressed with how similar it is to a flagship model. Google cut corners to reduce the price but they seem to have found the corners that are ok to cut. They know a budget phone user and what that user will need and what that user will be ok without. You’re not playing intense, ram draining games or wanting the most beautiful screen for movie watching. You just need a phone that does phone things. I could also see this being the perfect phone for teens who tend to break things more. Cheaper phones, cheaper repairs, but with all the functions a kid needs on a phone. I really enjoy using the pixel 7a and I don’t think there’s any question it’s a great device. The real question is, if you can’t afford a flagship phone but can afford the 7a will you be happy? And I think the answer is definitely yes. If you don’t use your phone for much more than photos, texts, emails, calls, etc then you should absolutely consider a budget level phone. And if you’re looking at the available phones in that category this year, the pixel 7a really is the best all around again.

This phone is a major upgrade from my old LG entry level Android smartphone. With the Pixel 7a’s processor, it’s impressively fast and responsive with every tap. I am loving the 6.1 inch display, smooth to the touch and I have not experienced any lagging so far. Setting up the face and fingerprint recognition to unlock the phone was a breeze. Switching between apps are quick and loading is fast for the majority of the apps I have installed. If there is one thing I would complain about which is only cosmetic is the rear surface because it easily gets smudges and attracts dust, and for sure a fingerprint magnet. A feature that I like is Clear Calling which can be turned on in settings. This feature reduces the background noise of the person from the other end of the call. I called someone while the person was at the airport and was able to clearly hear the caller’s voice without the need to shout. Toggled this feature on and off to test it out fully and the background noise was noticeable without it. As with any other Google phones, the Assistant feature comes very handy when I just want quick information. It’s like asking the Google Home but without the need to say “Hey Google” and can be used on-the-go. Another feature that’s also handy is the Assistant Voice Typing. This has been proven useful when I needed to send an urgent message but can’t type on my phone at the moment like when I was cooking. Although similar to the comment I had with the recorder, this too had a bit of issue not transcribing some of my dictated words correctly. However, it may be due to my tone and diction as English is not my first language, so maybe not entirely the phone’s fault. Pros: -Affordable - for the features included, you get the bang for your buck. -Easy to set up and user-friendly step by step instructions -Very responsive, no lagging -Brightness adapts to your surroundings and can be set manually. This is very helpful when you are outside with the sun glaring, you will still see the display on the phone. -the handy dandy Google Assistant -Clear Calling reduces background noise -Assistant Voice Typing for hands free messaging -Image quality is very good for an entry level phone. Features several settings that you can play around with to get the best image Cons: -Rear surface is prone to smudges and fingerprints and visibly attracts dust -Recorder transcript and assistant voice typing do not transcribe some of the words correctly -Photo quality captured zoomed in at 8x is decent but okay for the price point Overall, this is an excellent entry level smartphone for its price point. I would recommend it for its affordability and the basic features and more that give you the best bang for your buck.

Great phone but battery life is lacking

I've owned the Pixel XL, Pixel 4XL and Nexus 6P. All were google phones and all exceeded my expectations. I was hoping that would be the case with 7a. Pros 1) The camera is excellent. It blows my Galaxy S23plus out of the water. In almost any environment, it gets a great picture 95% of the time. 2) The software is excellent. AI, Call screening, basic PIM, Voice to text and more are A+. Android is refined and a pleasure to use. 3) I found the size to be perfect. Having used regular and plus size phones, the 7a is a welcome adjustment. It fits into my pocket and is comfortable to type on. 4) The screen is great. Even compared to higher end oled panels, this is crystal clear and bright. The 90hz refresh allows the phone to fly through tasks. Cons 1) The battery life is just not good. I had no issue with charging. I use a wireless charger for overnight refills and it was fine. Plug-in speed for a budget phone is very very good. The problem is the battery life itself. Even with no use and working close to a wifi router, the phone noticelably drains. Using it for checking whatsapp, podcast listening (through bluetooth with the screen off), web browsing and superlight gaming (Wordle) resulsts in noticable battery reduction. I don't expect much of a battery when you do a lot of photography and GPS usage. But I mostly use it for light tasks, if at all. I'm below 55% in the late afternoon, even when I barely touch the phone. On weekends, if I use the phone for pictures and phone calls, it drains fast and I have to charge it. I thought this would stop after a few days, but it hasn't. 2) The software does have some bugs. I still use the back/home/multi button set up. The home soft button stops working in the middle of the day sometimes and needs a soft reset. The fingerprint software cannot complete the set up on my phone. I gave up after a few resets. I am a google fan and wanted to keep the phone. Google has to get the battery life to make it through a day. There's no point to good software if you're concerned you'll run out of power before you can recharge.
