I’ve been using the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL for about a month now, and overall, it has been a fantastic experience.
Design & Display
The matte finish on the back is a nice touch—it resists fingerprints better than previous models. The phone feels premium in hand, though it is slightly on the heavier side. The 6.8-inch Super Actua OLED display is absolutely stunning, with vibrant colors and excellent brightness. Using the phone outdoors in bright sunlight is no issue, thanks to its 3,000-nit peak brightness. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and animations buttery smooth.
Performance & AI Features
The Tensor G4 chip does a great job handling daily tasks and multitasking. Apps open quickly, and I haven’t noticed any lag, even with demanding apps like Lightroom and gaming on Genshin Impact. The AI features are a highlight—Circle to Search is surprisingly useful, and the AI-powered call screening is better than ever.
Camera System
This is where the Pixel 9 Pro XL truly shines. The 50MP main sensor takes amazing photos, even in low light. Google’s AI-powered "Best Take" feature helps tweak group photos so everyone looks good. The 5x optical zoom on the 48MP telephoto lens is super sharp, and the ultra-wide lens captures excellent landscape shots. Selfies are also noticeably better with the new 42MP front camera. Video quality has improved too, with 8K recording and better stabilization.
Battery Life & Charging
The 5,060 mAh battery easily lasts me a full day with heavy use, and with lighter use, I can get almost two days. The 45W fast charging is much needed—I get 70% charge in about 30 minutes. Wireless charging is a bit slower but still convenient.
Software & Updates
The Pixel 9 Pro XL runs on Android 14, and the clean, bloat-free experience is a joy. Google’s promise of 7 years of updates makes this a long-term investment.
What I Didn’t Like
Still gets warm when gaming or using the camera for extended periods.
Battery drain with certain AI features
Final Verdict
The Pixel 9 Pro XL is an amazing smartphone, especially for those who love photography and a clean Android experience. If you’re into AI features, the new Pixel-exclusive tools are genuinely useful. While the phone isn’t perfect, it gets so much right that I’d highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a premium Android phone.

My previous Google Pixel phone was a Google Pixel 8 Pro. I am very happy my Google Pixel Pro 9 XL. Bigger screen good for my eyes. bigger battery lasts longer for me during the day. I love taking selfies with higher megapixel so I look sharper. My phone looks nicer with its new design. I love the AI and its numerous features. It was was worth upgrading.

Good phone but :
Pros :
-IP rated
-Pretty fast (though most mid range phones for non gaming purposes should be similar in speed)
-Camera is quite good especially zoom range
-wireless charging is a nice feature to have your port last longer
-Display is pretty bright
-Fingerprint scanner works well even with a cheap tempered screen protector
-Thermometer is a pretty neat feature and you can now use it for body temperature
-It has the find my device option
-sound quality (from the speakers) is quite good.
-The finishes are very nice.
-I'm able to get over 1gb/s with 5g network
-Audio recording is good
-Add me feature does work pretty well.
-Camera app can be opened very fast.
cons :
-battery isn't great
-a bit bulky
-GPS isn't always on mark same goes for direction (cheaper phone has sometimes better accuracy)
-have gotten glitches in YouTube, Google and connectivity issues.
-Find my device (forgot if that is what you call it) isn't that accurate
-Many IA feature aren't available depending where you use the phone
-The slow motion is capped at 240Fps where some lower end phones can get to 1000 or 2000 fps for a third of the price
- 50mp are slow to take and will be blurry if you move while taking them
-50mp will also be slow to process when wanting to view them
-Even 12mp pictures need to be processed and get a loading time (though very short)
-No 8k video (even if not useful in most settings it is a little expected when phones half the price offer this option)
-Focus distance is a bit long, for closer shots you need to use the wide angle lens.
-I don't really have a reference but quick shots or during action come out as blurry than with phones much cheaper.
-The charging isn't that fast but sufficient
-No photosphere
-I don't really find the camera settings ergonomic nor can I find a full manual photo mode (with obturation speed for instance)
-No IR blaster (not that useful anyway)
-No headphone jack (it's the new "trend" so it's "standard")
-No micro SD expansion and the storage is a bit low on the starting models
-Gemini, at least for my use cases isn't as good as the competitor(s).
Having a phone 4 times cheaper before switching to this feels like an upgrade but not on everything.
In the end for 4x the price I get :
- a nicer camera (better wide angle, main and zoom sensor) but the main sensor still doesn't let you make quick shots in interior without them being blurry or quick action shots. In everyday use case you don't really notice the upgrade much, except when taking the 50mp shots and being able to crop into them.
-Faster 5g (but between 0.6gb/s or 1.1gb/s for my use case it doesn't make a difference)
- a brighter display
-a bit faster phone
but you lose :
- a lighter thinner phone
-faster charger
-included power brick
-better GPS
-IR blaster
-more storage
-double physical sim
At this price point and cheaper you have phones with 1 inch sensors and nicer periscope zooms.
Those cheaper phones also will get a SD 8gen3 and more storage, faster charging and some may have a longer lasting battery.
But does the phone being better on paper make it better in actual daily use (and for cheaper)?
This phone does what it's made for, but is it the best bang for your buck? I don't think so.

A Reliable Performer for the Past Year

I owned this Pixel 9 Pro XL for about a year and used it as my daily driver before recently trading it in for the new Pixel 10 Pro XL. This phone was an absolute workhorse and served me incredibly well.
The Good: The camera system remained top-tier for my entire year of ownership. It consistently produced incredible photos that were sharp, vibrant, and great in low light. The clean Pixel software experience is also a huge plus—no bloatware and always the first to get Android updates and new features. The display is still beautiful and performance for daily tasks was smooth and reliable.
The Areas for Improvement: Over the last few months, I did notice the battery life starting to fade. It began to struggle to get through a full heavy day on a single charge, which was a primary reason for my upgrade. Also, the 128GB of storage started to feel a bit tight, especially with all the high-resolution photos and videos.
Conclusion: Overall, the Pixel 9 Pro XL was a fantastic phone. If you're looking for a device with a world-class camera and a pure Android experience and can find it at a good price, it's still a very capable option in 2025. For me, the improved battery and performance on the new model made the upgrade worth it.

Camera and display quality are excellent. A clean Android experience with a few Google software touches provides a good user experience. If you need a simple UI experience, a larger display, and a great camera, this will be a good option. You cannot expect much with raw performance and heavy gaming .

Pixel never disappoints! I was still rocking with my Pixel 8 pro and had no issues, other than it got run over by a tractor. I love googles commitment to quality and innovation. Everyone is always shocked I have a thermometer on my phone. As well all my apple friends always want to take pics on my phone. I tell everyone they should convert to Pixel! Love the design — it feels much more refined and premium compared to previous models. The camera is excellent for photos, and overall performance has been smooth for the most part. I’ve used the Pixel 7 Pro before, and this feels like a solid upgrade in terms of look and build.
That said, the 128GB storage fills up quicker than expected. Around 10GB is used by the system, another 10GB by temp files, and 5–10GB by the AI core, leaving less usable space. I also experienced the phone freezing completely twice since March, but otherwise, it’s been reliable.

This phone should be The Phone of the Year!

So I've been using the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL for about 6 days now and I've got to say that for the first time in a long time.. I'm excited to step out and use my new phone. I'll start by saying that I consider myself a photographer and videographer. I'm not a pro by any means but I enjoy sharing photos and videos of life and the world around me. If you are reading this review.. odds are by now you already know that the Google Pixel line of phones are known to have some of the best camera hardware and software in a smartphone. This year's Google Pixel has a 42mp front facing camera, a 48 mp ultra wide camera, a 48 mp telephoto camera that Zooms up to 30X ! and a 50mp wide camera. It's loaded!
I've had so much fun going out for walks and capturing photos and videos with this phone. It is jam packed with so many fun camera features and editing tricks. I've tried a lot of them and I'm still finding new things to do with it each time I dig through the menus. You can toggle between a 12mp and 50mp setting but oddly enough I've found that leaving it set to 12mp seems to create sharper photos. If you select 50 mp setting and zoom in past 5x the photos tend to look super soft and mushy. Don't know if it's just the way it is, or if it'll need to be fixed with a future software update. Anywhooo. if you leave it at the default setting, you will be super pleased with photos taken with each lens on this phone. The Google camera app makes taking creative photos and videos so easy. My favorite modes so far have been "action pan", "add me" , and video "Pan". There is a bunch of other cool photo and video modes to play with as well. "Add me" allows you take a group photo of your friends and loved ones, then you hand the phone to someone in the group while you step into the shot and have them take a photo with you in it. The software will add you into the previous photo and everyone will be in the photo!
This year's Google pixel has an excellent video camera. I feel like google phones in the past always had mediocre video quality, but this time around it has really impressed me! I can't wait to take it to a concert or other event and capture some cool videos! The camera app also has a mode called "video boost" when recording. You have to toggle it on every time you are about to record a video but it will upload the video to Google's servers, process it and hand it back to you with better dynamic range, contrast and even render unto 8k 30 FPS if you would like! Oh man, I'm sorry but I could talk about the cameras all day long. If you've made it this far.. just take my word for it, you will love the cameras on this phone.
The rest of the specs on this phone are pretty great, you get the new Google Tensor G4 chip, and Gemini Nano / Titan M2 chip. It has 16 gb of ram, and this variant has 128GB of storage. Not enough if you ask me. Especially if you are like me and love taking photos and videos. You will have to offload photos and videos onto a hard drive or the cloud often. The phone supports 5G, wifi 7, bluetooth 5.3 and has an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen. The fingerprint sensor is very fast and reliable. I have not had any issues unlocking my phone. The screen is 6.8 inches and very bright! Google claims 3000 nits, but I leave adaptive brightness on so it doesn't hit its peak brightness often unless I am outside. it is very usable outdoors in this bright Texas sun.
The hardware specs on this phone won't be the best on the market, but where this phone shines is the software included on here. There is a ton of Google Ai software in here. So much that I still have yet to use every feature fully. Google introduced "Gemini" on this Pixel. I believe it is the name of the new artificial intelligence program that I'm guessing will replace Google Assistant in the future. I wasn't able to try the "gemini advanced" mode because it is subscription based model and it seems to conflict with the Google One plan I already have. So I can't speak of all the features that Gemini Advanced will provide but from what I've used so far.. I would say that it's been pretty useful for day to day tasks. I still feel kind of weird letting Ai do my work or thinking for me, but I suppose as time goes on I will get used to it. One of my favorite features so far is "call notes". When you call someone or a business.. the phone call will be recorded and then transcribed or summarized for you with notes. I know I know.. low key creepy. But I can see it being helpful. Especially when calling to make an appointment or if someone provides you a phone number or other information that needs to be written down. If you decide to use the call notes feature, it will play a message in the call saying that the call is being recorded so that the person on the other line is made aware of it.
There is so many helpful and cool software tricks on this phone that I am going to suggest that you go online and read all about them. The phone will also have plenty of helpful tips and guides to walk you through them all. If I haven't lost your attention yet, I feel like I will if I keep on going on about all the software features on this phone lol. But I will say.. there is so much helpful smart software packed into this phone that you'll be learning about it all for weeks.
The build quality of this phone is very nice. I love it actually. It is lightweight but solid. The back of the phone has a nice soft texture to the touch. the glass on the back does not get greasy or slippery. The rails are polished aluminum and look very beautiful. The camera is raised looks pretty futuristic lol, but it will not make the phone rock when laid on its back. I love this phone, I want to carry it without a case.. but for now.. I Don't want to risk breaking it. Google says the phone is 2x more durable than last years! How durable exactly? I don't know, but glass can break, and polish aluminum can scratch.. so I'll keep it in a case for a while.
I know, this review is quite long, and I'm sure I missed a lot. But the TLDR is
This is the first Google phone I have been excited for in a long time. It's also the first phone I've enjoyed taking photos and videos with as much as I enjoy shooting with mirrorless cameras.
My only complaint is that 128gb is not enough for this phone. You will definitely need to rely on a cloud service, most likely Google's cloud services.. and or a hard drive to store all your recorded memories.
Google says it will provide 7 years of updates to this phone, you will definitely fill the storage on this phone very quickly. If you are like me and already subscribe to Google One or some other cloud storage, then you will be fine with this bare minimum. If you don't want to pay a subscription for cloud storage, then I suggest you but a variant with more storage.
Would I recommend this phone? 100% for sure. Especially if you are already a fan of android phones, and or Google phones. If you've been waiting for a phone to make the switch from the fruit company, I think you will also love this phone. The cameras and the magic editor software alone are the best reason to make that switch

Sleek design, tons of features, AI-focused.

Out of the box, the new design is very sleek and premium-looking. The obsidian color just looks so classy. The rectangular smooth shape makes it easy to hold and feels great in the hand, albeit a bit slippery. The power/multifunction and volume rocker buttons are in a good place and are clicky and responsive. The camera bump is huge, but it does not look bad at all and works well to stabilize the phone when holding it and minimizes wobble on the table. I appreciate the IP68 rating as I hike and camp quite often, so rain and dust will not be a problem.
The display is quite reflective, so I am glad that the screen has up to 3000 nits brightness and that helps greatly in sunny conditions. The 120hz refresh rate makes scrolling and animations buttery smooth. The bezels are noticeable, but do not distract from the beautiful “Super Actua“ 6.8in. 1344 x 2992, 486 PPI screen.
For security access, there’s the usual PIN, a very capable face recognition option, and lighting fast ultrasonic fingerprint sign-in. The haptic feedback feels natural and responsive.
Thankfully, the battery lasts for a whole day, at least 18 hours with regular use. The phone is quick-charge compatible using a 45-watt charger, which sadly is not included. It is also Qi wireless charger compatible as any other phone nowadays. Sadly, it does not support Qi2 wireless or mag safe.
This phone features the new Tensor G4 chip, which is very capable. I have not noticed any hiccups in performance on any app, or when playing demanding games. It does not get too hot during heavy use. The 16GB memory should make the experience better, especially when using AI features. It is Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.3 compatible.
Speaking of AI, today’s buzz tech, the Pixel 9 Pro is jam-packed full of features. Front and center, is the Gemini app. I’ve been using more and more AI and Gemini does well when asking questions, condensate and summarize text, design logos, get writing ideas, make lists, and general learning. The pixel Screenshots recalls any screenshot with just a few description words. The Call Notes app makes call transcripts, which is great when you want to remember what someone said. The Pixel Studio is quite fun when trying to make AI-generated pictures, or photoshop pictures you have taken. The circle-to-search works very well. If there is a nitpick, is that it takes some time to figure out the technology, and some features may seem gimmicky and not something I’d use every day.
The Gemini Live, which is included for a year (paid Gemini Advanced subscription afterwards) is something to behold. It can keep up a conversation asking questions, making interruptions, asking for clarification, and even changing the subject. It is very fluid and a bit eerie. There are other AI related upgrades when getting Gemini Advanced, such as 2TB cloud storage.
The camera has become a focus in phones, more so than call quality. In this department, the Pixel 9 Pro provides a great experience. On default settings, the 50MP pictures are crisp and bright. They are a bit on the cool side, but vibrant. The lenses do a great job in wide angle, panorama, and an amazing 30X zooming. The video is crisp at 4K 30fps, and the stabilizer does a better job than expected. The AI makes taking pictures even better and more fun. There’s the auto-framing, magic eraser, magic editor, zoom enhance (which is sci-fi movie-like), video boost (8K up-res in the cloud), and the Add Me feature, which allows for inserting someone into the frame by combining two pictures. It is great with some slight AI fragmentation and can be tricky to set up. Selfies are much better now with the 42MP front camera with autofocus. The Magic Editor helps enhance the pictures even further.
There are other quality of life improvements such as a robust screen app/widget optimization, decent notifications, news, great weather app, and Satellite eSOS support when there is no cell signal for emergencies.
In the end, I am quite impressed with the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Typically, upgrading a phone feels simply like getting the next one, but this time around, it definitely feels like a noticeable upgrade. I will certainly recommend checking it out if you are in the market for a new phone.

Leading edge of AI technology in a phone

Typically I find that most high-profile / highly recognized phones are more hype than they are worth but after a week of use with the Pixel 9 Pro XL, I found this phone to be far from overhyped. The amount of features, most notably the AI features, packed into this phone is incredibly impressive and nearly impossible to cover all of within a reasonable length review. In my opinion, the features of this phone make it perfectly suited for almost anybody, from a student to working professional, especially with the noteworthy accessibility features. Google has thought of nearly everything and then managed to (somehow) pack it all into one phone. That said, if you are willing to splurge on a new Google Pixel 9 phone, I say go all in and spend a little extra for the Pro XL because it is certainly worth it.
Getting started:
Setting up the phone is fairly simple. The built-in guidance helps walk one, even the more technically challenged, through the setup process. Transferring the contents and settings from my old phone went smoothly, especially because of my existing Google account. Once the initial set up is completed, the built in Pixel Tips program walks you through a summary of the abundant features with the phone. My favorite part is the fact that the Pixel Tips is a built-in phone app, meaning it can be accessed anytime, even after the set up is completed. The Pixel Tips not only describes the features of the phone, but there are included video demonstrations to illustrate how to go about using said features.
Physical aspects:
To me, the physical build of this phone is awkward due to the rear camera body extending past the main body of the phone, but surprisingly after a short time of use, this became a very minimal nuisance. I did not have a case ready for use with this phone and have used the phone without a case so far. The construction of the phone feels durable and well made, with the body retaining a sleek and slim build. I even unintentionally conducted a drop test of the phone (without a case) and was pleasantly surprised by the superficial, minimal damage that resulted from the fall. (While at a store, the phone slipped out of my cross body belt purse and fell directly onto the concrete floor, easily a 4 foot drop. The result was a small scuff on the edge of the rear camera body but nothing else. I was extremely relieved, but also impressed by the durability of the phone.)
Display/ screen:
Of all the features of this phone, I did find the screen resolution to be slightly disappointing. The quality is there, and it is good, but I would not go as far to say it is exceptional. The larger size of the XL screen is appreciated, and it didn’t seem like battery life was noticeably sacrificed as a result of the larger screen size. The screen is additionally vibrant in color, providing sufficient visibility in bright sunlight conditions, and I found its touch accuracy to be exceptionally good. A highlight of the display is the technology behind its LTPO (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) screen, which provides a balance between screen quality and resultant power usage.
Camera:
The rear cameras of the Pixel 9 Pro XL are enough of a reason to get the Pro model over the baseline Pixel 9 model. The zoom capabilities are edging closer to its main Android competition, with the imbedded AI functions and included editing features helping to close that gap. While both the rear and front facing cameras were a superb upgrade from my previous phone, I did find that the rear camera still had room for improvement with lower light environments. Some of the indoor pictures I captured, with daytime lighting that I felt was adequate, still resulted in slight blur. Overall, the cameras’ capabilities and abundant setting and editing features makes the Pro model a worthy upgrade to spend a little bit more on.
AI features:
As mentioned, the abundance of AI features with this phone is extremely impressive. A majority of the included features help make everyday tasks more efficient and additionally provide as excellent accessibility tools. A few of the features I found noteworthy were the: Pixel screenshots – which allows for searching and organization of screenshots taken, Pixel Studio – which allows for the creation of AI generated images, Thermometer - which allows for temperature measurement of objects including people, Device as Webcam - which allows your Pixel to act as a webcam when connected to a laptop, desktop, or smart TV, and the numerous organizing features.
Safety & Security features:
The Pixel 9 models come with a Satellite SOS feature, which allows for emergency calls via satellite when cell or WI-FI services are not available. The phone also includes many personal safety setting options. In addition to the safety features, the phones security features are top-notch with include VPN, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor – which I have found to work extremely well, and possibly most impressive, and definitely a selling point of this phone, 7 years of software support.
Performance:
16GB of RAM in a phone is impressive and I have zero complaints with the speed of the phone. It is very evident that this phone possesses top of the line processing technology.
Battery:
I found the battery life of this phone to be very good considering all the apps I have installed in addition to all of the features encompassed within this phone. Under fairly heavy usage I consistently got through a full day before the battery drained to low levels. With moderate use this battery life was unquestionably excellent.
Storage:
The only negative that I found with this phone is Google’s persistence to not allow for additional phone storage via a microSD card. 128GB of storage will go fast and if you are not a fan of paying for cloud storage, nor have personal cloud storage setup at home, then I highly recommend getting a phone with at least 256GB of storage.

Actual setup and testing the product:
Information pack sent with phone was outstanding. Never have I received a product with this quality and quantity of information. Full contact information if you need help!
First, I read the instructions that were included, charged the phone, left charge cable connected, inserted the SIM card when told to in the boot up process. When turning the phone on you will be walked through every step. In addition, I installed a protective case and screen cover for accidental drops and bumps. My new phone service even emailed me that I was using the sim in another phone.
Setup Find Device! Don’t skip this step ever!
Do not turn your old phone off until the end of the complete process. It is not finished until it does a very long data transfer as one of the last steps. The initial connection is a little misleading as you think the whole transfer is finished.
The Google account help and Pixel Phone help will guide you online if you want to preview them before turning on the phone. Otherwise, the phone will walk you through everything.
Transferred all the data from my other Android phone wirelessly without any issues! Very nice! You will have to re-sign into each APP with your current password for that APP. All my old APPs worked fine but I had to delete the other brand specific device APPs that transferred.
I setup the phone to use all data transfer and updates over WIFI.
Google Guidebooks are available on your phone with lessons on how to use your phone. You will be sent an email with the link when the phone is first registered. First time that has ever happened with any phone! Service after sale is outstanding.
First system update needs to be done. It takes around 35-50 minutes.
Installed a wallet case and glass protector. All my phones for the last 15 years have had a wallet case and none were ever damaged. Only the washing machine did one phone in. Also dropped a phone into the water on a canoeing trip. Always plastic bag your phone for water sports and do not store it in a hot place (car).
Feel and weight of phone is perfect. Boots faster than other phones that I have and accesses menus/apps quickly. I was able to move icons around with ease and place them where I wanted in the quick access screen.
On a local road trip today, I was able to fully access 5G connections, log into numerous local WIFIs, navigate on maps, text/talk clearly, use a BT5.4 earphone, check for spam calls, and check battery usage. Battery usage was must more efficient than I expected in that after 3 days it was still over 70% of light to medium usage. I set the battery usage to save mode but not the extreme mode and kept all apps closed I was not using. QI was tested and was fully functional.
Auto orientation screen works fine in all menus.
Took videos and pictures and all were excellent! 30X down the street and 30 feet across the house to the TV screen. Those three photos can’t be sent to my PC in the Pixel 9 Pro XL as is non-functional. I had to use the email function to get the photos. Got a message saying this function is not ready yet.
Portrait mode is awesome. The only victims I could find were on TV. Camera automatically tags people in the picture. Just be sure to decrease your zoom to get them all.
The 4 cameras on this phone are the best in the industry. It would take several months to check all the functionalities of every camera. But these stand out: 8K video, 30X zoom, and 50MP. The house at the end of a long street was crystal clear.
Face recognition, fingerprint, PIN, and password was set for sign-on. All worked perfect! Just swipe up on the screen and face works fine or use the fingerprint function. If you mess up, you will get the PIN login.
On the PIN login you have to use the enter key as the last step.
Message/text mode worked as advertised but only selfie camera shot was available for new photos in message/text mode. If you need to take a new photo you will have to open up the camera app and take a picture, then go back to the message app and retrieve the photo from gallery in the + drop down menu. This is different than most message/text apps. I did try contacting Google Tester for additional clarification on this but was unsuccessful.
Screen was large and clear and noticed a faster response to APP activation that the previous model. Screen size is measured as though the case has square corners. Pixel is the top of the premium phones from my limited short test of this product.
My family is sold on Pixel as it does everything right. Blocks spam calls very efficiently and photo albums can be shared with everyone you want in google. Better function than the competition.
Towards the end of my evaluation, I closed out all the functionality I did not need in the APP menus in settings.
Summary:
This is a superior phone to the other manufacturers (light and powerful). The features and quality are at the highest level. Many cell phone service providers are offering additional discounts for trade in and other deals. This could make this a better bargain if your service provider has any incentives. This is my phone/LOL.
