Absolutely love this phone, long time iPhone user swapping to Android and this is the phone to swap to. The camera is amazing, Gemini makes a huge improvement over Siri. If you're looking at making the swap to Android, this is the way to go.

Out of the box, the new design is very sleek and premium-looking. The obsidian color just looks so classy. The rectangular smooth shape makes it easy to hold and feels great in the hand, albeit a bit slippery. The power/multifunction and volume rocker buttons are in a good place and are clicky and responsive. The camera bump is huge, but it does not look bad at all and works well to stabilize the phone when holding it and minimizes wobble on the table. I appreciate the IP68 rating as I hike and camp quite often, so rain and dust will not be a problem.
The display is quite reflective, so I am glad that the screen has up to 3000 nits brightness and that helps greatly in sunny conditions. The 120hz refresh rate makes scrolling and animations buttery smooth. The bezels are noticeable, but do not distract from the beautiful “Super Actua“ 6.8in. 1344 x 2992, 486 PPI screen.
For security access, there’s the usual PIN, a very capable face recognition option, and lighting fast ultrasonic fingerprint sign-in. The haptic feedback feels natural and responsive.
Thankfully, the battery lasts for a whole day, at least 18 hours with regular use. The phone is quick-charge compatible using a 45-watt charger, which sadly is not included. It is also Qi wireless charger compatible as any other phone nowadays. Sadly, it does not support Qi2 wireless or mag safe.
This phone features the new Tensor G4 chip, which is very capable. I have not noticed any hiccups in performance on any app, or when playing demanding games. It does not get too hot during heavy use. The 16GB memory should make the experience better, especially when using AI features. It is Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.3 compatible.
Speaking of AI, today’s buzz tech, the Pixel 9 Pro is jam-packed full of features. Front and center, is the Gemini app. I’ve been using more and more AI and Gemini does well when asking questions, condensate and summarize text, design logos, get writing ideas, make lists, and general learning. The pixel Screenshots recalls any screenshot with just a few description words. The Call Notes app makes call transcripts, which is great when you want to remember what someone said. The Pixel Studio is quite fun when trying to make AI-generated pictures, or photoshop pictures you have taken. The circle-to-search works very well. If there is a nitpick, is that it takes some time to figure out the technology, and some features may seem gimmicky and not something I’d use every day.
The Gemini Live, which is included for a year (paid Gemini Advanced subscription afterwards) is something to behold. It can keep up a conversation asking questions, making interruptions, asking for clarification, and even changing the subject. It is very fluid and a bit eerie. There are other AI related upgrades when getting Gemini Advanced, such as 2TB cloud storage.
The camera has become a focus in phones, more so than call quality. In this department, the Pixel 9 Pro provides a great experience. On default settings, the 50MP pictures are crisp and bright. They are a bit on the cool side, but vibrant. The lenses do a great job in wide angle, panorama, and an amazing 30X zooming. The video is crisp at 4K 30fps, and the stabilizer does a better job than expected. The AI makes taking pictures even better and more fun. There’s the auto-framing, magic eraser, magic editor, zoom enhance (which is sci-fi movie-like), video boost (8K up-res in the cloud), and the Add Me feature, which allows for inserting someone into the frame by combining two pictures. It is great with some slight AI fragmentation and can be tricky to set up. Selfies are much better now with the 42MP front camera with autofocus. The Magic Editor helps enhance the pictures even further.
There are other quality of life improvements such as a robust screen app/widget optimization, decent notifications, news, great weather app, and Satellite eSOS support when there is no cell signal for emergencies.
In the end, I am quite impressed with the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Typically, upgrading a phone feels simply like getting the next one, but this time around, it definitely feels like a noticeable upgrade. I will certainly recommend checking it out if you are in the market for a new phone.

Typically I find that most high-profile / highly recognized phones are more hype than they are worth but after a week of use with the Pixel 9 Pro XL, I found this phone to be far from overhyped. The amount of features, most notably the AI features, packed into this phone is incredibly impressive and nearly impossible to cover all of within a reasonable length review. In my opinion, the features of this phone make it perfectly suited for almost anybody, from a student to working professional, especially with the noteworthy accessibility features. Google has thought of nearly everything and then managed to (somehow) pack it all into one phone. That said, if you are willing to splurge on a new Google Pixel 9 phone, I say go all in and spend a little extra for the Pro XL because it is certainly worth it.
Getting started:
Setting up the phone is fairly simple. The built-in guidance helps walk one, even the more technically challenged, through the setup process. Transferring the contents and settings from my old phone went smoothly, especially because of my existing Google account. Once the initial set up is completed, the built in Pixel Tips program walks you through a summary of the abundant features with the phone. My favorite part is the fact that the Pixel Tips is a built-in phone app, meaning it can be accessed anytime, even after the set up is completed. The Pixel Tips not only describes the features of the phone, but there are included video demonstrations to illustrate how to go about using said features.
Physical aspects:
To me, the physical build of this phone is awkward due to the rear camera body extending past the main body of the phone, but surprisingly after a short time of use, this became a very minimal nuisance. I did not have a case ready for use with this phone and have used the phone without a case so far. The construction of the phone feels durable and well made, with the body retaining a sleek and slim build. I even unintentionally conducted a drop test of the phone (without a case) and was pleasantly surprised by the superficial, minimal damage that resulted from the fall. (While at a store, the phone slipped out of my cross body belt purse and fell directly onto the concrete floor, easily a 4 foot drop. The result was a small scuff on the edge of the rear camera body but nothing else. I was extremely relieved, but also impressed by the durability of the phone.)
Display/ screen:
Of all the features of this phone, I did find the screen resolution to be slightly disappointing. The quality is there, and it is good, but I would not go as far to say it is exceptional. The larger size of the XL screen is appreciated, and it didn’t seem like battery life was noticeably sacrificed as a result of the larger screen size. The screen is additionally vibrant in color, providing sufficient visibility in bright sunlight conditions, and I found its touch accuracy to be exceptionally good. A highlight of the display is the technology behind its LTPO (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) screen, which provides a balance between screen quality and resultant power usage.
Camera:
The rear cameras of the Pixel 9 Pro XL are enough of a reason to get the Pro model over the baseline Pixel 9 model. The zoom capabilities are edging closer to its main Android competition, with the imbedded AI functions and included editing features helping to close that gap. While both the rear and front facing cameras were a superb upgrade from my previous phone, I did find that the rear camera still had room for improvement with lower light environments. Some of the indoor pictures I captured, with daytime lighting that I felt was adequate, still resulted in slight blur. Overall, the cameras’ capabilities and abundant setting and editing features makes the Pro model a worthy upgrade to spend a little bit more on.
AI features:
As mentioned, the abundance of AI features with this phone is extremely impressive. A majority of the included features help make everyday tasks more efficient and additionally provide as excellent accessibility tools. A few of the features I found noteworthy were the: Pixel screenshots – which allows for searching and organization of screenshots taken, Pixel Studio – which allows for the creation of AI generated images, Thermometer - which allows for temperature measurement of objects including people, Device as Webcam - which allows your Pixel to act as a webcam when connected to a laptop, desktop, or smart TV, and the numerous organizing features.
Safety & Security features:
The Pixel 9 models come with a Satellite SOS feature, which allows for emergency calls via satellite when cell or WI-FI services are not available. The phone also includes many personal safety setting options. In addition to the safety features, the phones security features are top-notch with include VPN, ultrasonic fingerprint sensor – which I have found to work extremely well, and possibly most impressive, and definitely a selling point of this phone, 7 years of software support.
Performance:
16GB of RAM in a phone is impressive and I have zero complaints with the speed of the phone. It is very evident that this phone possesses top of the line processing technology.
Battery:
I found the battery life of this phone to be very good considering all the apps I have installed in addition to all of the features encompassed within this phone. Under fairly heavy usage I consistently got through a full day before the battery drained to low levels. With moderate use this battery life was unquestionably excellent.
Storage:
The only negative that I found with this phone is Google’s persistence to not allow for additional phone storage via a microSD card. 128GB of storage will go fast and if you are not a fan of paying for cloud storage, nor have personal cloud storage setup at home, then I highly recommend getting a phone with at least 256GB of storage.

Actual setup and testing the product:
Information pack sent with phone was outstanding. Never have I received a product with this quality and quantity of information. Full contact information if you need help!
First, I read the instructions that were included, charged the phone, left charge cable connected, inserted the SIM card when told to in the boot up process. When turning the phone on you will be walked through every step. In addition, I installed a protective case and screen cover for accidental drops and bumps. My new phone service even emailed me that I was using the sim in another phone.
Setup Find Device! Don’t skip this step ever!
Do not turn your old phone off until the end of the complete process. It is not finished until it does a very long data transfer as one of the last steps. The initial connection is a little misleading as you think the whole transfer is finished.
The Google account help and Pixel Phone help will guide you online if you want to preview them before turning on the phone. Otherwise, the phone will walk you through everything.
Transferred all the data from my other Android phone wirelessly without any issues! Very nice! You will have to re-sign into each APP with your current password for that APP. All my old APPs worked fine but I had to delete the other brand specific device APPs that transferred.
I setup the phone to use all data transfer and updates over WIFI.
Google Guidebooks are available on your phone with lessons on how to use your phone. You will be sent an email with the link when the phone is first registered. First time that has ever happened with any phone! Service after sale is outstanding.
First system update needs to be done. It takes around 35-50 minutes.
Installed a wallet case and glass protector. All my phones for the last 15 years have had a wallet case and none were ever damaged. Only the washing machine did one phone in. Also dropped a phone into the water on a canoeing trip. Always plastic bag your phone for water sports and do not store it in a hot place (car).
Feel and weight of phone is perfect. Boots faster than other phones that I have and accesses menus/apps quickly. I was able to move icons around with ease and place them where I wanted in the quick access screen.
On a local road trip today, I was able to fully access 5G connections, log into numerous local WIFIs, navigate on maps, text/talk clearly, use a BT5.4 earphone, check for spam calls, and check battery usage. Battery usage was must more efficient than I expected in that after 3 days it was still over 70% of light to medium usage. I set the battery usage to save mode but not the extreme mode and kept all apps closed I was not using. QI was tested and was fully functional.
Auto orientation screen works fine in all menus.
Took videos and pictures and all were excellent! 30X down the street and 30 feet across the house to the TV screen. Those three photos can’t be sent to my PC in the Pixel 9 Pro XL as is non-functional. I had to use the email function to get the photos. Got a message saying this function is not ready yet.
Portrait mode is awesome. The only victims I could find were on TV. Camera automatically tags people in the picture. Just be sure to decrease your zoom to get them all.
The 4 cameras on this phone are the best in the industry. It would take several months to check all the functionalities of every camera. But these stand out: 8K video, 30X zoom, and 50MP. The house at the end of a long street was crystal clear.
Face recognition, fingerprint, PIN, and password was set for sign-on. All worked perfect! Just swipe up on the screen and face works fine or use the fingerprint function. If you mess up, you will get the PIN login.
On the PIN login you have to use the enter key as the last step.
Message/text mode worked as advertised but only selfie camera shot was available for new photos in message/text mode. If you need to take a new photo you will have to open up the camera app and take a picture, then go back to the message app and retrieve the photo from gallery in the + drop down menu. This is different than most message/text apps. I did try contacting Google Tester for additional clarification on this but was unsuccessful.
Screen was large and clear and noticed a faster response to APP activation that the previous model. Screen size is measured as though the case has square corners. Pixel is the top of the premium phones from my limited short test of this product.
My family is sold on Pixel as it does everything right. Blocks spam calls very efficiently and photo albums can be shared with everyone you want in google. Better function than the competition.
Towards the end of my evaluation, I closed out all the functionality I did not need in the APP menus in settings.
Summary:
This is a superior phone to the other manufacturers (light and powerful). The features and quality are at the highest level. Many cell phone service providers are offering additional discounts for trade in and other deals. This could make this a better bargain if your service provider has any incentives. This is my phone/LOL.

First impressions:
Despite having XL in the name, the Pixel 9 Pro XL does not feel or handle like an overly large phone. The lightweight sleek body actually has great dimensions for pocket carry, even inside a slim case as shown in one included photo. The camera bump on the rear protrudes quite a bit, so I installed the case to keep it safe when transporting and laying the phone down. If not using a case, I at least suggest using a lens protector for the camera lenses. Power and volume buttons are nicely placed together on the right side for easy one-hand operation. The rear of the phone has a pleasant feeling matte texture. Included in the box are a SIM tool and USB-C charging cable.
Setup and activation:
The Pixel was easy to get setup after unboxing. I powered it on, connected it to wifi, and activated the eSIM OTA with the carrier. I then signed into my Google account and applied a system update which took about 30 minutes to complete, including a reboot. Fingerprint and PIN setup were both quick and easy to configure but the facial recognition scan feature wasn’t as forgiving as other devices. I’m currently stuck wearing a cervical collar 24x7 for the next month. I was able to easily setup face scan on a competing phone while wearing the collar by tilting the phone instead of my head. When I try doing the same with the Pixel, it keeps saying to move the phone further away. I finally gave up and will complete the setup after the collar is removed. The remaining initial phone setup was straightforward and quickly accomplished.
Performance:
The bottom tier 128GB internal storage is somewhat on the small size but I’ve learned to make limited space work by not hoarding old photos and useless data. If more storage capacity is required, pre-configured storage options go up to 1TB. There is no removable storage option such as microSD. The Tensor G4 and 16GB RAM combo powers the phone and interface sufficiently with no noticeable lag or latency. Swiping and navigating is clean and fluid. Apps launch quickly and run reliably. Features like AI and the camera also work fluidly with no hiccups.
The Pixel includes several safety and security features. The Titan M2 security coprocessor helps keep the phone and data safely locked down. Google VPN provides extra security on untrusted networks. Point to point encryption helps keep my transmitted data safe, and crash detection, crisis alerts, and an upcoming satellite SOS (if wifi and cellular are unavailable), are additional tools to help stay safe, particularly while traveling.
Despite the abundance of processing power, tools and features, battery life is actually good compared to other recent model smartphones that I’ve owned. I have no problem getting well over a full day of heavy use and two to three days of light to moderate use before recharging. I haven’t had the battery drain unexpectedly on me yet, but if it does, extreme battery saver mode is supposed to provide up to 100 hours of battery life. I haven’t tried or needed it yet but it’s good to know it’s there if needed. The Pixel fast charges via USB-C or Qi wireless. Utilizing battery share, it can also charge other devices wirelessly via Qi.
Communications:
Phone voice quality is good and voices sound clear on both ends. The Pixel provides built-in visual voicemail. The native message app is also good. I was worried about messaging coming from my previous phone’s proprietary messaging app, but I haven’t missed a beat with the Pixel’s messaging. I also like that all text boxes are the same color regardless of sender or phone type. Google even integrated Gemini AI in the messaging app. Bluetooth and wifi connectivity are reliable and stable. The phone stays reliably connected to my home network, smartwatch, ear buds, and headset.
Screen:
The OLED 120Hz screen is vivid and has great brightness, pixel density, and color saturation. It is also snappily responsive to touch, as is the screen embedded ultrasonic fingerprint reader. The fingerprint scanner reliably unlocks on the first attempt most times. In the rare instances it doesn’t, it’s usually because of something I did wrong. I don’t use a screen protector, so I don’t know whether or not installing one would affect readability. However, the scanner on a naked screen is solid and reliable. The gorilla glass is durable enough to survive daily use and has no scuffs or scratches despite me using no screen protector.
Camera:
The triple lens 50MP rear camera is in a word, fantastic. Features include a 10X optical zoom, ultrawide, and 30X telescopic zoom. The 42MP autofocusing front camera is also a strong performer. Photos from both have great clarity, good color balance/saturation, and reliable auto-focus/exposure. Post processing results look great in fully auto mode. Point and shoot snapshot photos are quite nice rather than a roll of the dice. Manual overrides are available if desired. The camera is easy and intuitive to use and captures stills and video reliably.
AI editing features such as AI Magic Editor help make editing fun and more efficient while also expanding creativity options. Post capture tools like Pixel Studio also provide advanced AI editing and creative capabilities. I included an original pic that I took with the Pixel and the same pic with the background swapped out to a space theme which I accomplished using Magic Editor’s Reimagine. All I had to do was highlight to select the background with a few clicks, describe the background I wanted to replace it with, and let the generative AI work its magic. It took barely any time or effort on my part to complete. “Add me” is another fun Pixel AI feature that allows people to swap places mid-capture to easily take group pics and selfies with everyone included. No more outstretched arms and awkward selfie poses, nor being forced to enlist a stranger to get everyone in the photo.
Video can be captured in HD (24,30,60fps), 4K(24,30,60fps), or 8K(30fps). 8K is accomplished using video boost with upscaling. Other video features include slow motion, stop motion, time lapse, and cinematic background blur. The camera is by far my favorite tool on the Pixel 9. Not only is it easy to use, but media files are backed up in easily exportable fashion. One of my main reasons for switching to Android was my frustration with backing up photos on my previous phone with a different OS. I got tired of losing irreplaceable photos due to corrupted file formats, limited export options, and lengthy aggravating export sessions due to the phone constantly disconnecting from my PC during export. No such issues with the Pixel. Google Photos has excellent organization features and both the Pixel and Google provided numerous easy ways to safely store, backup, export, and share my photos.
AI:
I previously touched upon some on the AI photo/video features but the Pixel 9 Pro’s AI goes farther than just photos. Gemini is the built-in helpful AI assistant that provides chatbot style assistance. Ask it a question or to create a generative image and it will typically accommodate the request immediately. I also like using Google Lens which allows me to search within a photo for information about the subject. I took a photo of my car to test and Lens correctly identified the year, make, and model. Doesn’t get much easier. I included a photo of Lens identifying foliage I photographed.
Some of the AI is still being fully developed or tweaked and I’ll occasionally encounter a not quite there yet type error if the request cannot be completed. One notable example is if I request Gemini create any images containing a person, even cartoon people. For example, I’ll type in Gemini to create an anime character dancing or performing some other mundane action. Pretty tame and nonspecific request, but I always get a message that Google is working to improve Gemini’s ability to create people and I will be notified when the feature returns. I can’t help but think that in the wake of some recent high profile AI misdeeds and deep fakes, companies are pulling out all stops to prevent having the technology abused and exploited by untrustworthy individuals. I hope the feature is restored but suspect it will be heavily limited whenever or if ever that is.
Conclusion:
To summarize in TLDR fashion: the Pixel 9 Pro XL is a powerful and helpful smartphone companion. It has numerous useful tools, robust security, and a stellar camera. All of this is bundled into an easy to handle and carry form factor. I can search just about anything with either a simple photograph, by scanning a snippet of music, or asking Gemini AI. Operation is snappy and fluid with no lag. So far, I’ve been nothing but happy and impressed with the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

I recently upgraded from the Pixel 8 Pro to the Pixel 9 Pro because I was intrigued by its AI capabilities and improved camera. Fortunately, the launch date coincided with a weekend trip to New York City so I was able to put it though the paces!
First impressions - Design & Build: The Pixel Pro XL’s larger screen was perfect for everything from reading some news articles I’d saved flor the flight to checking city maps. The stainless steel felt premium and the screen is beautiful. While it admittedly takes its cues from the other guys - they do it right!
Battery Life: The battery life impressed me thoroughly. It supported a full day of intensive use—mapping my routes, capturing photos, and managing emails—with 60% left in the tank by the time I hit the hotel. I could have hit the down without charging but I wanted to test the fast charging capabilities and I was up to 80% within minutes. Impressive!
Camera: This phone’s camera setup truly where I was most excited. It adeptly handled quick snaps of street scenes and beautifully captured the neon glow of the city at night. The Night Sight mode was particularly effective in as I was navigating the indoor shots at the August Wilson theater which had a purposely dark nightclub feel.
AI Features and Cost Savings: The inclusion of a one-year Google One AI Premium plan has been a significant perk. Not only does it enhance the phone’s AI capabilities, making tasks like document editing and email management smoother, but it also includes two terabytes of storage. Previously, I was paying separately for cloud storage, so this bundled offer has saved me a couple bucks. I actually get more use out of the plan on my desktop because now I get Gemini Advanced built into my Google docs and slides. I’m going to look like a rockstar and do even less work!
Multitasking Performance: Despite the Tensor 4 not having top-of-the-line specs, its performance in real-world scenarios was flawless. I could seamlessly switch between apps without any lag, proving that real-world efficiency often trumps theoretical specs. Would it be nice if it competed with the snapdragon and apple silicon? Sore, but don’t let anyone tell you that this phone is less capable because of the Tensor
Screen Brightness: i’ve never had a smart phone where I turned the brightness up and it was so bright I had to turn it down to keep from burning my eyes. OK, maybe that’s a little hyperbole, but man this thing has a bright screen which made navigating maps during the middle of the day in New York a breeze I didn’t have to squint ever, which is something I can’t say about other smart phones I’ve owned.
Magic Editor App: While the Magic Editor app provided some handy quick fixes, it struggled with more complex photo edits. It’s a great concept that could use a bit more refinement to truly match the phone’s other high-performing features. In other words, not quite ready for primetime, but it’s got potential.
Overall Thoughts: The Pixel 9 Pro met all my expectations and then some. The camera quality blew me away. I’ve had so much fun taking pictures in a few days that I’ve had it. The savings from the Google One AI Premium plan alone make it a valuable investment, not to mention the seamless integration of its AI features that made navigating and enjoying New York easier and more enjoyable. If you’re on the fence jump in, you won’t regret it

Excellent flagship by Google with the best camera

This is my 1st ever phone from Google but I am a long time Android user. Google's new flagship phone is quite amazing on it's own (talking bar phones here, not including the folds) but I don't think it was quite enough to tear me away from my S24 Ultra. I will share my experiences after daily driving the 9 Pro XL for a week.
In the box is a super quality built phone, charging cable (no brick included) and some of the usual literature. My first thought when holding the phone was how heavy it is. Not too heavy as in it weighs too much to be uncomfortable. Feels and looks great in the hands. The obvious elephant in the room is the huge camera bump on the back. Now when placed on a flat surface it doesn't rock back and forth like it is unbalanced. I did end up getting a Spigen case for the phone to actually make the phone a lot more flat (see pics) and love it.
The 6.8 inch "Super Actua" is an incredibly smooth and beautiful OLED screen with basically a VRR from 1-120 Hz display. Streaming and gaming look soo nice and excellent in all light. Google claims up to 3k peak brightness with DHR support so you can see it no matter how much the sun is beating down on you.
Battery life has been top of the line, 10/10. Granted it seems to charge a little slower than my Samsung but I noticed the battery drains a lot slower. For example, on a full charge while streaming and the usual browsing the net and text/calling, my battery only drained <10% (from 4pm to when I fell asleep). I know Google also claims fast charging up to 70% in ~30 minutes using a 45W charger. Phone also supports wireless charging as well and no problems using it.
I will suggest to anyone to probably skip the 128GB model and go for a larger size if you can. I say this because during setup and transferring everything from my S24 to the Pixel 9 it already filled 60% of the phones non-upgradable internal storage. I probably could free up another 20 gigs though by deleting my all memes lol. If you aren't a fan of cloud storage just know, there is no slot for a micro SD card so you are stuck with whatever choice of storage you choose.
Speaking of setup, it was as simple as falling down. After moving my SIM card from my old phone to the Pixel and starting it up, you just follow the simple, easy-to-follow on screen instructions. It lets you choose what data you want to move over or just move everything like I did. Took about 40 minutes and after a restart, the Pixel 9 Pro was up and running without a hitch.
Now my absolute favorite thing about the 9 Pro is the camera. It absolutely blows iPhone's and Samsung's out of the water. The triple rear cam can do up to 50MP wide and 48MP UW with zooming to 30x. Pictures look great no matter if it's a still frame or fast moving (like my little pups running around chasing each other). Video quality is excellent as well and looked super smooth. You can do 8K at 30fps, but I preferred 1080 and 4k @ 60 for super smooth playback.
Sound quality from the built in speakers are fine, nothing to laugh at but also not super high quality. I just paired my earbuds and sound from there was excellent. Another problem I have while streaming video and you can see in the pic is that no matter what options I choose, I cannot get the aspect ratios to where I want them. There is no option that I noticed to watch in full widescreen to fill the phone. I know it probably has to do with the phone itself as it is rounded on the corners and they only let you watch from where the corners stop but I just can't get used to it. Mind you, this is a PERSONAL pet peeve and you might not care 1 bit which is fine.
The fingerprint sensor works perfectly every time. No matter if my finger is wet and whatever position I place it, the Pixel 9 Pro has a 100% track record (so far) of always working.
Pros
Display is beautiful
Battery life is crazy good
Camera is the best of the best
Super strong gorilla glass for the front screen
Fingerprint sensor is great
16GB RAM is more than what most phones use
Cons
Aspect Ratios
Feels like the phone wants to be an iPhone really bad (look and gesture navigation)
Tensor G4 processor is actually slower then Snapdragon 8 for gaming
128GB storage is not enough and should stop being an option (I think all companies do this to try to get you to sign up for their cloud storage)

Amazing Android - Google Pixel 9 XL with Gemini AI

This was a tough one for me. I have been a very long time “other” Android phone user so the thought of moving to this Google Pixel 9 XL was a big deal. I always had the larger version of the other phone, so I had to have the XL to at least maintain that similar screen size.
Upon getting the phone, the Google setup was amazing as expected. It even remembers my other phone setup so it gave me the option to restore those apps and settings to Pixel. Overall, about a 30+min exercise depending on how much you restore.
Coming from a powerhouse competitor, I did notice that the Pixel 9 XL is very snappy but occasionally I have noticed a slight delay. I love having the ability to swipe spell on the keyboard. I have noticed that on the pixel, it falters for me, not frequently but maybe I am still getting used to the keyboard layout. Other than that, usage and performance has been impressive.
I really don’t understand how anyone is having issues with the battery. My battery life is amazing. At 17hours off charge, I am averaging remaining at 40% plus remaining. I know this may change over time but it’s a solid performance.
Camera features are incredible! When you snap a picture, you get the basic list of Share, Edit, Lens and Delete. If you click on Lens, it will immediately search for similar images and try to identify what is in the picture. For example, I did two things, I took a picture of one of my wife’s rose bushes and it showed me the exact type, as well as others like it, along with as much detail as you wanted. Another example was when I had a picture of my granddaughter with a teething toy, lens found similar pictures of infants chewing on the exact same toy along with links to go purchase! This is a helpful feature but that is just the beginning. If you select Edit, it opens many new features to enhance your pictures. When you take a pic and go into Edit and then Tools, it is a wealth of great tooling. One that I did struggle a bit was the Magic Eraser. This feature is available on other Androids and my last one was able to leverage it with better results. I am still playing with it, but it’s not as sharp as the other photo/video features. There is another feature called Auto Frame, its located within Edit, you select Magic Editor, and it gives you this option. It basically will take a picture and enhance and give you framing options for the picture. For example. I used a picture of my son holding my granddaughter in the surf. When I ran it through Auto Frame it produced four options, one of which just framed my granddaughter. I like the feature as it attempts to suggest different ways of framing the pictures you take. Another interesting feature is one called Reimagine. It’s also located in Edit after you select the picture. You then open Magic Editor. You can then select areas (such as background) and the it prompts you to “Reimagine as” and you type your response. When I took the same picture of my granddaughter, you could only really see the water, so I typed Surf (to re-imagine as). Interestingly, one of the options it returned with was a surfboard she was now sitting on..lol. It’s a very interesting feature, it also asks if you want a new set of results and you can try again. There are many more features, including one called “Add Me”, which allows you to to take a picture, then select one of the people, then go you put yourself in and take a picture and it “adds” you into that picture. I didn’t try this one yet because I have an awesome Bluetooth selfie stick that has a tripod and if I need to be in a pic, I usually use that. I could literally write several more pages on photo editing and enhancing options. I have never seen a phone this rich in features. Obviously, they will continue to improve these via software updates. I am really curious how these will only mature and grow in functionality.
I have a Samsung Watch that I love, and I think others have had issues with them with a non-Samsung Watch. I can get it paired and reporting to Samsung Health, but I cannot get it to keep the Bluetooth connection intact. I must go back into the phone and have it re-connect to the watch. It works, but not clean. I will continue to work through it. Shouldn’t be this difficult. I also noticed my battery today was draining like crazy and apparently, I must have hit the always on display on the watch settings. I know it’s not going to be perfect, but I would like to have them working together more seamlessly.
I also use my phone for work. I logged into my work portal and was able to setup my work environment on my phone as I previously had. I like how with Android, a separate partition is created and maintained. It is very easy to switch between the two and it clearly shows which apps are work apps and which are not. This is a great Android feature, and the Pixel 9 XL executes flawlessly.
Lastly, and most importantly, I need to talk about Gemini. Gemini is Pixel’s AI introduction. I was skeptical about it at first but after getting prompts via email and text to use it, I decided to to give it a try. Wow, OK, so this is a game changer. I have used ChatGpt before and all providers are dipping their toes into AI. I setup I have to say that I am very impressed. I setup a chat with Gemini, just like any other text contact. I was able to generate a texting response with it. The level of depth that it responds with is incredible. Even when your get a response to your prompt/question, you are able to type a response that allows you to dig deeper. You go into further detail as your questions get deeper. This, is really the future. For an example, I asked Gemini about a very complex topic, got a response, delved deeper and essentially peeled back the onion on the topic. The implications here are huge because the instantaneous response with context is awe inspiring. In the future, those that can quickly manipulate the “prompts” and responses will extract a level of knowledge within a short period of time like never before. You have been warned, lol.
I would recommend this to a friend, it’s an awesome phone and knowing that Google is quick to keep fixing and updating for continued improvement is great. I am giving this 5 stars. At this very moment, its about a 4.2 but the fact that it has so many features that I have only touch on and so many more to explore, I am giving it 5. I know that Google will only improve this via updates as we move forward.

I’ve been using the Pixel 9 Pro XL for a while now, and honestly, it’s one of the best phones I’ve ever owned.
The screen is huge and super bright, so I can actually see it outside in the sun without squinting. Everything looks sharp and smooth, whether I’m watching videos or scrolling. The Obsidian color looks sleek and classy, and the phone feels solid in the hand.
The camera is amazing. Photos come out clear, colorful, and natural—even at night. The zoom actually works well, and the front camera makes selfies look great without overdoing it. The little AI tools (like editing people into a shot or fixing a picture) are fun and surprisingly useful.
Battery life is solid—I can easily go a full day without charging, sometimes two if I’m not glued to my phone. When I do need to charge, it’s much quicker than older Pixels.
What I also like is that Google promises 7 years of updates, so I don’t feel like I’ll need to upgrade anytime soon. It’s a pricey phone, but I’ve seen it go on sale, and at that point it’s a steal compared to other high-end phones.

After about 8 months of usage, my screen started displaying a green line on the right side. Reading online it seems like I am not the only one. Lengthy process to get it fixed even though it's under warranty... Not a pleasant experience. Disappointed by the product quality

I can remember over a decade ago when I couldn't wait until the lastest Nexus release. I couldn't wait to see what was now new next in the Android world. Since the first Pixel I've not been overly excited about a phone release and I since moved on to other brands. I was excited for the Pixel 9Pro XL 128G 16GB RAM phone release from Google. First observation, It has a slim silhouette with rounded corners. It is the largest Pixel Pro phone at 6.8 inches. However, it fits nicely in my 8-inch cross-body bag. Pixel 9 Pro XL is equipped with a triple rear 50MP wide and ultra-wide telephoto zoom lens, and a 42MP front camera. Bright display and UltraSonic fingerprint sensor with facelock , are standard for this model. Several new features that appealed to me were the Satellite SOS and the AI features like Add Me, Magic Editor AUTO FRAME, REIMAGINE, and AUDIO MAGIC ERASER. I can't count the times I have needed this feature in the past! In my opionion the Google phones have always been the best camera phone from the Nexus line to the Google Pixel Pro XL. My pictures are always quality photos!
The Google Pixel 9Pro XL is equipped with Genemi AI with 2T Goggle1 free for 1 year.
The phone setup took a little time about an hour for me to transfer all apps and files, which was less time than my last phone transfer.
In my opionion the Google phones have always been the best camera phone from the Nexus line to the Google Pixel Pro XL. My pictures are always quality photos.

Very Big Step Forward For Google With The Pixel 9

Google has stepped up their game with the Pixel 9 XL Pro. The phone sports a 6.8" display that is very bright (3000 nits) which makes it easy to see even in bright sunlight. It's lighter than my previous phone, but still has a solid case and strong feel to it. The battery lasts me a little over 24 hours. Fast charging helps as I do have to charge this more often than my previous phone. Google stepped it up also with the cameras on the phone. There are 3 rear facing cameras (50MP wide, 48MP ultrawide, and 48MP telephoto) and one front facing camera (42MP). The photos from the cameras are very good and high resolution. The microphone array works very well. They pick up my voice when I hold the phone at arms length so with recorded video, I can hear my voice whether I'm holding the phone close to me or not. People I've talked to on phone calls are hearing me clearly when I'm holding the phone close to me and also when I have it on speaker phone with the phone in front of me sitting on a desk.
Battery
I can run a little more than a day on a charge unless I'm using the phone more than I typically would. Typical use though is about a day. I changed to this phone from a different manufacturer's phone. My previous phone would hold a charge for a few days so the shorter battery life of the Pixel 9 is something that I'm having to get used to. The Pixel 9 supports fast charging and I don't have to have it plugged in for long to get the charge back up to 70% or higher. I think it will just be a little time of getting used to plugging it in each day for around half an hour to one hour.
Cameras
The array of cameras on the Pixel 9 is crazy. Three cameras on the rear of the phone that range between 48MP to 50MP. I'm really liking the results from each of them. They produce high quality high resolution photos. Also the video produced from them is great. You can record video up to 60 frames per second in FHD and 4K. You also get the option for 8K30p. I did notice that when you record video in 4K or use the 8K option, the phone does heat up some, but I never had a problem where it heated up to the point that I felt it was too hot. Also with the 8K option it will require the Video Boost option. I recorded video using 8K30p option and noticed that right after the video ended, the resulting video was a little higher resolution than 4K DCI, but once it was boosted, the resolution was 8K. As far as photos go, they look amazing from each camera. Google has added many photo options to the Pixel 9. The Add Me feature is a brilliant idea. I'll be using the Auto Frame option even more in the future. The Magic Editor is fun to play with. I also like that I can blur out the background of a photo without it causing a problem with me being in the foreground. That helped me when I took some photos of myself downtown and didn't want faces of the people around me to be distracting. I was able to blur everything in the photo except me.
Processors
The Pixel 9 sports the Tensor G4. This processor is fast and can be seen while using the phone by just how responsive everything is. Apps launched fast for me and general use such as app switching was incredibly fast for me. It also has the Gemini Nano. It helps with local processing of language models as well as some of the processing involving video and photo features. Applying changes to photos was fast and given that I was applying changes to 50MP photos on a phone, I was impressed with the speed at which changes were applied. The Gemini Nano also helps with natural language processing. I was able to see the benefit of this when I was converting my speech to text. I have done this in the past with my Android tablet, but it is always slow and gets a lot of the conversions from speech to text wrong which causes me to have to manually edit the documents. I was able to convert my speech to text for a multi-page document and only had to make one correction compared to doing the same thing with my Android tablet which had me making so many corrections that it almost isn't worth the hassle doing it on my tablet.
AI
Google had AI in mind when making the Pixel 9. It has the processor, the Gemini Nano, that is needed to make altering of photos, converting speech to text, reading text to you, and much more fast and easy. A big plus is that you can use Gemini as your personal assistant. It's was able to better understand my voice and was much more accurate than the personal assistant that I used on my previous phone. It's much better for me and removes the headaches I had with my previous phone. Having the ability to use local language models is a big help to me as I hike in National Forests and I often find that I don't have cell phone service, but I can still use speech to text to take my notes and it works well.
eSOS
Google has added a feature called eSOS which will appeal to many that are active. It will use satellites to send information to emergency personnel if you are needing help. I like the peace of mind that I will have when out hiking in places where I don't have cell service. Google, at least at the launch of the Pixel 9, is offering 2 years of this service at no charge which will allow users to take advantage of the feature and decide later if they want to keep it or not. I think many will be like me and have some piece of mind knowing that it will get a message out to first responders if something happens.
Final Thoughts
I really like the Pixel 9 Pro XL. It's incredibly fast and responsive, has so many photo and video features to count, and is more than capable when it comes to AI. The only things I would say are negatives would be the battery life and the placement of the volume and power buttons. I find that I, more often than not, press the volume up when I'm intending to press the power button. I'll get used to that in time, but hopefully Google will change the placement of the volume button to the opposite side of the phone in future models. Google has done an amazing job with the Pixel 9. I hope Google continues down this path going forward.

The 9 Pro XL is a quality-built product. Its frame is made from aluminum, and both the front and back sides are covered in Gorilla Glass Victus2. The look is elegant, with a matte finish on the back that contrasts nicely with the shiny frame. It is quite comfortable in the hand and feels good no matter how you hold it. In the normal position, the weight is distributed slightly towards the phone's bottom half.
On the right edge of the phone are a volume rocker and a power button, which have a good feel. A down-firing speaker, one in the earpiece for media use, USB-C (v3.2) port, and a SIM card tray are located along the bottom edge. There is no Memory card slot.
For security, there is an under-display fingerprint sensor. Located in the lower half of the screen it is highly responsive to fingerprint input. The Facial Unlock feature was quite impressive, consistently recognizing my face with and without glasses.
The 9 Pro XL has Google's Tensor G4 processor and Titan M2 security chip (which is used to secure sensitive data like biometrics). Google says the Tensor G4 speeds up web browsing by 20% and app launches by 17%. The processor allows the 9 Pro XL to run Gemini Nano for tasks like transcribing and translating languages without an internet connection.
Add me – this camera feature allows you to add yourself to a group photo. You take the first picture and then have someone in the photo take a picture of you where you stand next to everyone in the first picture, and then the phone combines the two images. This feature works well; the camera walks you through the process of taking the two photos and does a decent job combining them. We found out that you have to have people in the photo for this to work. I tried to use it on a group of stuffed animals, and it did not work at all.
Auto frame in Editor – this feature works well, though you have to understand the logic of their icons to get started. The cropping tool is useful; it has 6 standard settings and one where you choose how to crop the image. You also have an auto crop/rotation option to let the phone AI decide the best cropping. There is also a rotation option where you can rotate the image as you crop it, which works by determining the degree of rotation. There is a skewing crop option, but it does not seem to add much to your photo editing.
Reimagine – this feature has its plusses and minuses. Once you have the photo and you hit edit, it is not clear how you need to start adding AI portions to your photo. There is a button with no label on the bottom to the left you have to hit. This brings up your image with the instructions to circle, brush, or tap to select. This is how you define the area to create an AI effect. The sensitivity of the selection tool is broad, but you can refine it with an add/subtract option. You can then erase the area or reimagine it by typing in instructions of what you want to see. Some things it cannot generate (monkeys, pigs), but others it can. It does not always come up with the object you asked for (for example, I asked for a tank bumper, which gave me the back end of several SUVs, but I never got a tank in 15 tries). I have used other online AI-generating software that works better.
Panorama—This feature works really well. You take a couple of photos, and the camera directs you to add images, which are then stitched together in one well-composed image.
Zoom enhance—This is an excellent feature that the camera has—it will do up to 5x zoom, and the quality of the image at the max is excellent. This works on new and existing photos as long as the image has a high resolution. The only drawback is that it does not work in portrait mode when taking a new photo—you only have the option to increase by 2x. It also has a super-res Zoom video up to 20X.
Regular camera features – there are several settings you can use to take photos. Under the photo option, you can use a long exposure, action pan, set the brightness level, shadow, white balance, manual focus, shutter speed, and iso. The camera has improved how it deals with shadows, darker skin tones, and night shots. It does not always portray colors accurately, sometimes over-filtering the yellows. These can be adjusted through postproduction by the camera filtering system. The images under these conditions look great. The blur correction worked well. Low-light photography remains excellent. In a nearly pitch-black room, the Pixel renders colors that aren't visible to the eye, though they are on the splotchy side.
Other features of the phone:
Gemini Live—here, you can either type or speak a question, and the phone searches the Internet for answers. I asked it to tell me how to make a painting, what an arteriovenous malformation is, and what restaurants are near me now. It came up with logical answers to my questions and gave me a list of nearby restaurants. But without a data connection, many Gemini features don’t work.
You are given access to the Gemini One AI premium plan for a year which includes Gemini Live, but after that, it will cost you $19.99 per month, a high price for added storage, the Geeminy assistant, and the weak AI features. At this stage the AI is not as robust as say the AI on Windows 11 for Arm Processors.
Keep Notes—This is a simple program to keep notes, though it is a little buggy. I tried to increase the font size, and it was not easy to find how to do this, and it would not remember to keep the font at a larger size. On the fun side, the program lets you add emojis, animated gifs, a library of stickers, and even emojis.
Pixel Screenshots – this program organizes your screenshots so you can put them in categories and search for them easily. It works nicely and is relatively easy to use. They do not explain how to take a screenshot on your phone, and I had to look it up on the internet. To do this, you press the power button and the down volume button at the same time.
Weather—By clicking on the temperature on the home screen, the phone opens a detailed page with the current weather, hourly forecast, 10-day forecast, wind, humidity, UV index, pressure, sunrise and sunset, and hourly details for rain, wind, and humidity.
The phone is enjoyable to use. The apps download easily from the Play Store, but any apps I have from Amazon are clumsy since they don’t install directly on the phone but only through an Amazon Apps installer, meaning it takes several steps to start using them. I have an app that was purchased through Amazon 13 years ago that Amazon says is compatible with the phone, but it does not show up in the list of apps I see on the Amazon Apps installer on the phone. The Updated Play Store (on all Android phones Now) is organized differently as it does not open to a window with a search bar – you have to locate that button at the bottom of the screen. The way they give you notice of a new activity is very muted; there is a little peach-colored circle that appears at the upper right corner of the icon for the app. In the messaging program, this same circle is sometimes challenging to see when determining your new messages. One nice thing about the messaging app is that it shows who sent the last message to each of your contacts. It's easy to see if someone replied to your previous message. I like how the phone asks if the last call you received was spam and gives you the option to mark it that way in your database.
Size and comfort—The phone is the same size as my last phone. It is quite comfortable in my hands and easy to use for texting and other typing activities (even with my wife's short, stumpy fingers). The weight is slightly heavier than my last phone, but this is not a detrimental quality. The layout of the apps works like all other Android phones, though I had to look up how to access all the icons for the apps since they varied from my last phone.
The display is advertised as being 30% brighter than other phones. The Pixel’s bright screen proved helpful when I was framing shots on a sunny day; the display was evident and responsive. The phone's images are extremely clear, colorful, and sharp. I experienced smooth scrolling and responsive animations, and the display automatically adjusts to save battery life when high refresh rates aren't needed.
The phone's screens use Gorilla Glass, which is wonderful. I have always added a screen protector to my phone to prevent scratches, and this will not be necessary with this phone. The screens are smooth, and fingertip mobility is quick on this surface.
Charging and battery life: The battery life is about 30 hours per charge. Using the power brick charger made for the phone, a 45W USB-C, it takes less than an hour to charge the phone to 50%. This does not come with the phone but is an optional accessory.
One interesting feature that I like is the SOS on Satellite (Satellite SOS program). You can message emergency services and share your location when you can’t connect to a mobile or WiFi Network. There is a Demo so you can try this out without really calling emergency services. It is easy to use, and the instructions on connecting to the satellite. During a real emergency, a message will be sent to Garmin Response, the service handling the Satellite SOS program. lt is too bad this is only free for two years. The exact cost after that has not yet been released.
Overall, I like the Phone with its strong construction, good looks, beautiful screen, fast processor, and multiple camera features, despite several inadequacies: the paywall options with teaser pricing, the sketchy AI at this stage, No Micro SD Slot, no included 45W superfast charging brick, only the USB-C cord is included. Limited Storage, with the hope that you will buy more from the cloud like so many other devices, which are going to this type of plan.

I've owned the pixel prosince the Google pixel 6 models came out. This is the very first one that has impressed me enough to actually use it as my daily driver. I usually would use pixelphonesfor 3 days and toss it in a drawer and switch back to one of my Galaxy ultra models. This is the 1st version of the Pixel phone where I've been impressed enough with the phone and it's features not to easily dismiss it.
I love the flat display with the new addition of the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, it just works every time, on the downside it still doesn't work with the screen off. The screen has to be lit up, either lift to wake or a double tap for the fingerprint scanner to function. A update would definitely improve this feature drastically. Screen brightness outdoors is great, nice and bright and easy to read even with a glass privacy screen protector installed.
Battery life is pretty good, after a8 hour work day I'm still around 55% left for the evening. When bedtime hits the phone is around 19% when I drop it on my wireless charger for the night. I still use my Galaxy ring and watch 6 classic with the 9 pro xl. Surprisingly both transferred over from my S24 ultra perfectly.
I find the tesnor chip to be very snappy for all my uses, whether taking photos, playing games, or multi tasking on the 9 pro xl. One time I got a "Phone needs to cool down" message while taking photos on a 95 f day by my pool. But kinda to be expected on a crazy hot day with a newer high end phone these days.
Charging speeds are improved over last iterations of the pixel pro models. Especially using a 25w charger or higher. Gemini AI is pretty impressive built in feature and I've found it very useful accomplishing a few tasks at home.
The cameras are all the same from the 8 pro models, but they are up to speed with other competitors in the market. But I do wish they were improved more for the upgraded price of the new pixel line up. However, I would recommend the phone for anyone needing a new phone or upgrade.

This is the best Android phone I have ever used. I have been an iPhone user since the original was released in 2007. I have had every iPhone through the iPhone 15 Pro Max and this was the one that made me switch. I have tried for a long time to get away from iPhones and this is was the was the one that made it the easiest to switch. It may be because it looks and feels like an iPhone but that's not a bad thing. The design looks and feels premium. The camera is the best on a smartphone to date in my opinion. I have tried other Android devices and I never cared for the Android skinned versions of others. The Pixel 9 Pro XL gives you the cleanest form of Android that is how Google intended users to use. You don’t get 2 versions of apps with wasted storage space like from Samsung. The battery is excellent and will get you through a full day even with heavy use. Google Pixel phones have been getting better and better with every iteration and Google knocked this one out of the park in my opinion. The large screen is excellent and is a higher resolution than any iPhone. Consuming content on the large immersive screen is a joy. The speakers are loud enough and sound great. I personally am not one to care too much about AI, but the many features are there for those who do. The processor is nothing to write home about if you do anything heavy on the device like gaming. However, if you are a casual user like myself and use it mainly for calls, text, taking photos and watching content, then this is well more than enough of a phone to take care of those tasks. You don’t need a super processor to watch Netflix or search for the nearest burger joint. This is the Android phone to get. I highly recommend the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
