WARNING! DOES NOT do digital audio passthrough

    Posted .

I have both the old Chromecast with Google TV 4K (CCwGTV) and now the new Google TV Streamer 4K connected to the same TV and AVR so I can A/B compare both. Watching a YouTube TV football game that was broadcast in 5.1 surround sounds SO MUCH BETTER on my old CCwGTV because it does digital audio passthrough, which allows my Denon AVR to process the surround sound. However, Google TV Streamer processes the surround signal itself and passes a 5.1 PCM signal to my AVR. So, it’s no surprise that a $2K AVR processes surround sound WAY better than a $100 streamer, but it’s very frustrating that there is NO option for the Google TV Streamer to support audio passthrough! This will be a DOWNGRADE for anyone coming from a CCwGTV connected to an AVR for surround sound. Until Google fixes this, I’m sticking with my better sounding CCwGTV.

Hi SeanM. Thanks for taking a moment to review the Google TV Streamer (4k). We're sorry the audio experience missed the mark for you, but we really appreciate the feedback on why didn't meet your expectations. We hope you'll give Google TV another chance down the road. madebygoogle

Great device! Very Easy setup. No more buffering! The remote is a little different, button placements and volume on face instead of side like old unit.

Have used a Chromecast for many years and liked it just fine. But now that I've used this new Google TV Streamer, I can tell you I'm now spoiled by it. The speed of loading and switching between different applications and features is hard to beat. App load times, switching between apps, and pretty much everything else is enhanced. Same look and feel, menus, and most everything else. The remote is nice. They moved the volume buttons to the face of the remote and made it longer. No problem with it...I think I preferred the buttons on the side through. An important requirement for me was the ability to use the Chromecast remotes with this unit. That works just fine. You can pair your older Chromecast remotes with this easily. I like having two remotes...one for me and one for the wifey...saves some headaches and that eventual question "Where's the remote?!?" OH - the new remote has a "find me" feature so you can hit a button on the streamer and the remote becomes a screamer.

It's really the only option if you like the Google TV platform and need to replace a dying NVIDIA Shield TV. I had originally tried an Onn 4K Pro, but it suffers from Bluetooth audio issues, something I require for my setup. Setup is super simple, plug in, follow the prompts, sign in from your phone. Works well with Plex, Jellyfin, YouTube, and all the other streaming platforms. I've also been able to pair a DualSense and 8BitDo controller to use on-device retro emulation and Moonlight to stream games from my PC on the opposite end of the house. I regularly connect my Corsair headset to it via Bluetooth when the house needs to be quiet. I have yet to find anything I dislike about it. Maybe the weird shape of it? I was able to 3D print a bracket and mount it behind my TV so I guess that's probably irrelevant.

Extremely intuitive and easy to use. No hands free voice assistant, but the remote has it, and it has a find my remote function! Interface is fast and smooth with every streaming service you can imagine! The ethernet port is a huge plus as well! Setup is a breeze, especially since it's synced with your Google account!

The best thing that I brought. Ive had the previous chromecast for over 8 years and it finally broke. I went to best buy and got this in the same day. This version of chromecast has lightning speed and easy to use. Has everything you can think of. This is a Must buy in my book.

If your smart TV has trouble buffering the Wi-Fi signal, this will help resolve that. My LG TV became borderline unusable - none of the apps worked and would crash regularly. Rerouting everything through the Google streamer has everything running smoothly

Best Evolution: From Simple Dongle to Smart Home

if you’re tired of your smart TV menus lagging every time you try to find a movie, you seriously need to check this thing out. I’ve been using the new Google TV Streamer and the speed difference is insane compared to the old dongles. Everything feels way more fluid because of the extra RAM—apps open almost instantly and there’s zero stuttering. The built-in Ethernet port is a game-changer if your Wi-Fi is spotty, making 4K streaming super smooth. Also, the "Find My Remote" button on the back of the box has already saved me a dozen times. If you want a setup that feels premium and doesn't drive you crazy with loading icons, this is definitely the one to grab.

Overall this is a really good streamer if you don't want an Apple TV. Need to make sure that you have an HDMI cable that's correct because sometimes the audio will be not in sync and you'll have to restart your device. It's pretty fast and easy to use and the find my remote feature is really useful especially if you have kids. Overall I would recommend it

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is awesome! Super easy to set up, and it looks good, too—the white color doesn’t stand out too much, so it blends in. The picture quality is really sharp, and using Google Assistant to find stuff saves so much time. The remote was a bit weird at first, but now it feels natural. I love how everything’s organized on the screen; all my shows, apps, and recommendations are easy to find. If you’re looking for a simple, good-quality streaming upgrade, this one’s worth it!

I needed GOOGLE home on my ROKU TV so I could stream my GOOGLE NEST doorbell camera to my TV. It worked just fine. Of course it also added the GOOGE streaming platform, but I didn't really need that since I already had ROKU built into my TV.

Absolutely ideal for accessing/controlling my Google Smart Home devices without interrupting whatever I'm watching or having to pick up my phone. UHD 4k and Dolby Atmos both stream flawlessly [no buffering] utilizing the much-needed hardwire Ethernet port for these formats.

Decent midrange performance, SOC is still underpowered comparing to the apple and Nvidia streaming boxes. Wish google released a product to compete with these devices directly at the high end of hardware. New googletv features and the remote finder are a welcome addition. Onboard ethernet is gigabit, which is great. My wife likes the color, lets be honest that's the only metric that matters.
