The perfect Gopro set for snorkeling

So far I've only tested my Gopro at the dog park and backyard. It seems pretty easy to use and change settings. I checked on YouTube to see recommended settings. The floating handle is the perfect companion for why I bought this set. So, I think I'm ready for my snorkel trip to capture beautiful Hawaiian reef fish. It'll fit onto my snorkel mask and I can't wait to be able to show others what I see!

    OUTSTANDING ACTION CAMERA!

The new GoPro Hero 12 Black Action Camera + Accessories Bundle (Model: CHDRB-121-RW) is the latest bundle from GoPro. GoPro has also recently released the Hero 12 Black Creator Edition bundle. The GoPro Hero 12 Black is an outstanding action camera, just like its predecessors! The superior high-definition video recording, rich feature set, user friendly interface to the countless features, and robust performance and physical durability make GoPro my favorite! The GoPro Hero 12 Black Action Camera is an evolution of the Hero series, with a few changes from the Hero 11 which preceded it. The excellent video stabilization has evolved from HyperSmooth 5.0 to HyperSmooth 6.0. There are some changes to the available video resolution and frame rate combinations, including the addition of 9:16 aspect ratio, and elimination of all 4:3 ratio permutations, essentially replacing 4:3 with the 8:7 aspect ratio. Wireless timecode synchronization has been added, supporting use of multiple GoPro cameras in synchronous, as well as support for Bluetooth wireless audio (although the three internal microphones do a great job producing high quality audio, even without the availability of a “dead cat” to mitigate wind noise). However, if being proximate to the camera is not possible, pairing earbuds allows both audio recording from the earbuds as well as using the GoPro voice commands via the earbuds. GoPro also claims that the Hero 12 will provide longer battery life, but your mileage may vary given the many variables which affect runtime. The additional feature of interval still photos (nine settings from 0.5 seconds to 2 minutes), complements the excellent still photo capabilities which include versatile burst photo and night photo modes. The Hero 12, like the 11, has a 1/1.9”, 27 MP sensor. A notable improvement is that the Hero 12 shoots HDR (High Dynamic Range) video in 4K - 8:7 (up to 30 fps), 5.3K - 16:9 (up to 30 fps), and 4K - 16:9 (up to 60 fps). One feature has been removed to my great disappointment. The Hero 12 does not have GPS, which is a shame. GPS functionality had been integrated in the Hero 5 through Hero 11. For activities where time, speed and distance or altitude are part of the adventure, such as motorsports, snow sports, boating, rock/mountain climbing and aviation, among many other activities, GPS data and video overlay of the data can be very important. Removing GPS from the Hero 12 Black was not sensible in my opinion. There is a thread on the GoPro site where a GoPro employee responded to a user that the company found that very few customers used the GPS functionality, and it was removed from the Hero 12 to extend battery runtime. However, GPS was not turned on by default, and on the GoPro webpage which provides instructions for the use of GPS on the numerous prior models, GoPro states, “Does not have much of an impact on battery life”. The loss of the GPS feature may be a dealbreaker for some potential buyers. The Hero 12 Black arrives in the zippered “hard” storage case which is part of this bundled package. The camera and the included accessories are organized within a cardboard divider. There is insufficient room to store additional accessories in the case, however. The Hero 12 camera has the same compact and lightweight body dimensions of the Hero 11, measuring approximately 2” H x 2-13/16” W x 1-5/16” D (approximately 7.2 cm x 5.1cm x 3.4 cm) and weighing only 5.4 ounces (153 grams) with the Enduro battery installed. The black plastic camera body is comprised of three sections. The front and rear sections are a rubberized material, which now has blue speckles throughout. The center, core section remains hard, black plastic. The Hero 12 has an approximately 2.25” rear display touchscreen, as well as a just under 1.5” front, display-only color LCD screen. The camera body has a gasketed/sealed door for battery and microSD card access. GoPro claims that the body is waterproof to 10 meters (33 feet) without the optional, waterproof housing, or 60 meters (196 feet) with the protective-dive housing. I have never seen any IP ratings or testing standards, including drop testing, for GoPro, however. GoPro does not include the required microSD card. It would be nice if a memory card was included with the camera to facilitate the immediate use of the GoPro Hero camera without the need to procure a necessity separately. I use SanDisk Extreme (or Extreme Pro, when available) cards and find them to work very well with the GoPro. The minimum requirement is V30, UHS 3 rating, and the GoPro will work with up to the 1 TB capacity SanDisk cards. This bundle includes: • GoPro Hero 12 Black Action Camera • Two Enduro Batteries • The Handler grip • Head Strap 2.0 • Carrying Case • One Curved Adhesive Mount • One Quick-Release Mounting Buckle GoPro has an extensive collection of mounts and other accessories to select from. In addition to the folding fingers mount, the ¼”-20 standard tripod bushing is a real benefit. The 1720 mAh Enduro lithium-ion batteries which are supplied with the Hero 12 (and Hero 11) have superior extended performance and cold weather performance than the older, standard batteries. Since recording time is directly related to camera settings and utilization, as well as ambient temperature, having multiple batteries is a necessity. Since charging a battery in the camera body via USB requires several hours, and obviously only one battery at a time can be charged in the camera, it is almost a necessity to have an external battery charger. It would be nice if the GoPro Dual Battery Charger was included with the camera. The Handler shooting grip is buoyant and has a blaze orange endcap along with a wrist strap. It is nice for handheld shooting, especially with water sports. The Head Strap 2.0 is great for handsfree shooting, and includes a removable mounting clip which can attach the camera to clothing or a belt, for example. The zipper closure, “hard” storage case is a convenient means of protecting the Hero 12 and some accessories when not in use. The initial setup of the Hero 12 was a less than optimal process. Although many electronic devices may have a software update “available” for a new device, the Hero 12 “requires” a software update prior to being usable. There is both a large card and a sticker on the camera declaring, “Your camera must be updated before you can use it”. What should have been a quick and easy process immediately failed. After installing a new microSD card and an included battery, the camera boots to screens for selecting the user language and a couple of other basics, whereupon it lands on a screen directing the user to use the GoPro Quik smartphone app to continue with the software update and activation of the Hero 12. You must already have, or you must then acquire the Quik app and create a GoPro User Account. The Quik app instructs the user to swipe down and left and place the Hero 12 in pairing mode. My screen would not allow any swipes, and the app could not find the Hero 12 to pair with it. Removing the battery and SD card and rebooting a few times was ineffective at resolving the issue. The solution was to manually download the update file from the GoPro website to a PC, unzip the file and copy the update folder to a freshly formatted/blank microSD card. Once the SD card with the update and the battery are reinstalled in the Hero 12, turning the camera on should immediately boot to the installation of the software update, but in my case the result was a warning that the battery must have at least 20% charge remaining to install the update. Connecting the Hero 12 to the computer to charge the battery results in the notice that USB is connected (which prevents wireless pairing). My Hero 12 arrived with both batteries at 19%, and the batteries with the dual charger accessory that I purchased separately were both at 16%. After partially charging a battery and disconnecting the USB cable, turning the Hero 12 on then successfully installed the software update and finally made the Hero 12 a usable camera. I contacted GoPro and learned that the need to perform a manual installation of the initial, out of box, software update was not uncommon. Using the Hero 12 is easy and consistently results in outstanding videos and stills. There is a choice to use “Easy” menus, which offer a basic, simple point and shoot type of operating environment, or “Pro” menus which provide complete user control with the many available settings and features. Videos recorded in each of the available modes look outstanding! The wide-angle lens selections range up to 122° horizontal (151° diagonal) field of view in 16:9, but will increase to an incredible142° horizontal (177° diagonal) super-wide field with the optional Max Lens Mod 2.0, with the associated fish-eye lens distortion effect. The wide variety of resolutions, aspect ratios, features such as time-lapse and slow-motion, horizon-lock and superb stabilization results in incredible videos. The only video quality issue that I observed, was that in low light, the Hero 12 appears to struggle, even with the f2.5 aperture. Depending on camera settings, a fully charged battery provided approximately 90 continuous minutes of 4K or 5.3K video recording on average. With certain settings, after about 45-60 minutes of recording, the Hero 12 shut down due to overheating. When overheated, the camera body temperature ranged between about 130° F and 147° F and required about 30-40 minutes of cool down. The battery exceeded 150°. As is typical of HD video cameras, the Hero 12 Black gets hot, even when the ambient environment is not. Overall, the GoPro Hero 12 is outstanding! The video and audio are incredible. Unless GPS functionality is critically important to you, you will really enjoy the Go Pro Hero 12 Black which is an exceptionally good and extremely versatile camera.

Very good quality with video and pictures. I’m really impressed with how I can immediately see the photos on my phone after diving. I opened the GoPro app and connected the GoPro with it and it was on there. Can get an idea what filter I need or more light. Very nice. Worth it since the old one I had didn’t do that.
