GoPro Karma: My Thoughts

I have been considering purchasing a drone for awhile now. This year's Black Friday deals finally pushed me over the edge. I went back and forth between the GoPro Karma and the DJI Mavic Pro. There are pros and cons for both drones. The Mavic Pro has six pros, satellite positioning, vision sensors, object detection, flight time, flight distance, and size. First, satellite positioning keeps the drone almost absolutely still while hovering. If there is no connection to the positioning satellites the vision sensors allow for still hovering. Object detection, who wants to accidentally fly their drone into an object. The Karma doesn't have either of these features. The Mavic Pro has a 27 minute flight time almost double that of the Karma. Max flight distance of almost 4 miles with the remote (Karma's max is 1 mile). It is also a smaller drone. Knowing all of this why did I buy the GoPro Karma? GoPro Hero 6. This was the main reason I purchased the Karma. The camera on the Mavic Pro is 4K and 30fps and is not detachable. GoPro Hero 6 can record 4K at 60fps and is detachable. Buying the Karma meant get a camera that records at a higher frame rate, this means smother video when put into slow motion. Also I can detach the camera and have a GoPro for my adventures. The Karma grip allows for handheld silky smooth video recording. This accessory is $300 when purchased separately. So the Hero 6 and the Karma grip are valued at $800. The whole drone package cost $1000. The remote has a screen, no need to connect your smartphone to the remote. The Mavic Pro is by far the better drone, but the Karma provides you the best versatility. This along with the Karma being GoPro's second attempt at its first drone is why I choose it over the Mavic Pro. I feature that sometime in 2018 GoPro will have an updated drone that will use the same or similar camera stabilizer. I will be able to upgrade my drone, but keep my awesome GoPro Hero 6 camera.

I did a considerable amount of research on drones before choosing the GoPro Karma. Ultimately, what drew me to choose the Karma was the ecosystem it provides. For the same price as other drones, you get the drone, a removable GoPro camera (which you can use in other applications), a handheld stabilizer (called Karma Grip), a dedicated remote, and a hard-shell backpack/carrying case. The Karma flies incredibly well, and the controls are intuitive. Battery life is comparable to other drones on the market. My ONLY complaint is the lack of obstacle avoidance sensors, so you have to highly aware of your location. I've crashed it once, from a height of about 15 feet, and the Karma still worked great after changing the propellers. I really enjoy the Karma, and am continually finding new uses for it. The Karma Grip is great, too. I use it frequently to record everyday things. I recommend you highly consider this drone.

The goods: Good quality, fast charge, amazing camera. The bad: GPS signal is not that great, wish combo came with an extra battery, camera does not come with its own charger.

I love the ease of use of the drone and joysticks responsiveness. I think the go pro camera is the best out there for my uses. the only down side is the battery life, wish it lasted longer.

When buying my drone I was super excited to be able to go home and fly it. After a couple days of flying it fun was Unreal. But looking more into the rules and regulations I realized the town that I live in is literally 5 miles from an airport. Rule states that you cannot fly a drone within 5 miles of any airport without consent from the air Tower themselves, so for me to fly my drone I had to drive 10 to 15 minutes out of town just to be able to enjoy it without thinking I was going to get stopped and given a ticket. The camera stick and the gimbal was an amazing product I would buy that 10 times over again the Drone itself though was amazing to fly a rules and regulations ruin it for me.

I drove my wife to a training class 300 miles away and I got bored so visited the local BestBuy in the area. I bought the Karma Drone to kill time but then I realized I need an SD card to fly it. Went back home and bought SD card at my local BestBuy and was excited to play with my drone, so after registering my drone with FAA, reading the instructions, and updating everything I took it outside in my backyard to test it. After testing going up and down I tried to use the return to launch to land it and it started drifting to my neighbors yard and seeing a kid playing, I had to drone go up 2 stories, about 65 feet and next thing I the controller is telling me that I lost GPS connection and the drone flew as fast as it can away from me. It took me 2 hrs of asking people and knocking at neighbors houses before I finally found it. The drone is broken, the camera and the battery is detached suggesting it crashed. I got the BestBuy warranty so I was covered. The camera and the grip are actually really good and for $799.00 its like getting the drone for $150.00 and a free back pack. But the experience flying the drone was so bad I don't think I will be flying one again soon.

The GoPro Karma drone is well-built and easy to fly. The auto flying modes are great and the video is fantastic (have the Hero 6). This is my first drone and I have about ten hours on it, and now would like to upgrade to another drone for the following reasons:
-No object avoidance-flew it into a tree during first flight while in auto flight mode. Glad they included a set of spare propellers.
-Loud-Probably because it is rather heavy, but you can hear it from a good distance away.
-Range is poor
-Does not hold position in a hover
-GoPro getting out of drone business-Updates and future product support will decline.
I do enjoy flying this drone and think it was worth the money considering the stabilizer and handle that can be held in your hand (I got it on sale and it was bundled with an extra battery and set of propellers).

Great Drone and Camera System

I am a photographer who has been with GoPro since the Hero 3. I absolutely loved my Hero 3 but sadly after many years I killed both of mine so i was ready for an upgrade. I knew that I was getting the Hero 6 Black but wasn't completely sold on the Karma. After many many many reviews, videos, and first hand accounts I decided I would give it a try. As soon as I bought the Karma I knew they put a lot of thought into their whole camera system with it coming with a backpack of such high quality. Once I updated the Karma, Hero 6, Controller, and gimble we were ready to roll. The flight simulator really prepared you for what was coming. My first test flight went excellent and I was pleasantly surprised with how smooth the GPS guidance works. Filming in 4K is beautiful and super smooth with the Karma. I use my Karma at least once a week sometimes once a day when I'm really busy with weddings. The preset flight patterns work really well as well. I use the follow preset as we are running down the lake in Bass tournaments and its great. Now for the negatives. When i say negatives they arent really bad things just some things I would change. My first big complaint happened today. We went to the mountains to film and when I went to start my Karma it gave me the error that the battery was "too cold." I actually had to put it in my shirt to warm it up before it would take off. The editing software that comes with the Karma is Garbage and doesn't let you have any creative freedom besides your music choice. The self landing system has no avoidance ability so I've gone through a set of propellers already. Thankfully it didn't hurt the Karma but it did fall from about 20ft. Very durable drone is a huge pro. Overall I love the Karma and it works well but it does have a few flaws. I wouldn't trade mine for a DJI thats for sure.

I bought the Karma as a packaged item that had a gimble and hero6 included. I'm not real experienced with drones so am very pleased that it is user friendly. I haven't used all the functions yet. Down side is on the follow me the function doesn't have object detection so that it will adjust to the surroundings. Also, at times, getting the camera to record has proved to be a challenge. If it looses contact with GPS you could end up needing to chase the drone. The video that the hero takes is amazing. I may end up purchasing an additional microphone because I end up yelling to get the embedded one to pick up my voice. All in all would recommend the purchase.

As GoPro's decided to do away with Drone production (for now)...not sure how useful this is, but as a beginner quadcopter, it's a good choice. After the usual setup and updates, the Quad flew easily and a bit clunkier than the DJI products that I am used to, but held its own in several conditions, including quite windy. Video quality is all that you'd expect from GoPro. Overall, I'd say if you own a bunch of GoPro gear that's compatible and want to add aerial capability...snatch one up while you can and get lots of spare batteries and parts!

Awesome drone. More than I expected flying is a breeze! The fact that you can take the camera off is a plus too. The one downside I found so far is the battery life is pretty poor. If that was a little more then it would be perfect.

I have always been a fan of GoPro. When they introduced a drone I was very happy, however after the recall I became skeptical of the first time drone manufacturering. I am pleasantly surprised after doing research and still deciding to go with the Karma after all. This drone is everything I thought my first drone purchase would be. It is a very user friendly drone and flys great. There is obviously room for improvement but I have been nothing but happy with this drone. It's very easy and the carrying case is very handy. As for the camera I have no complaints and am very happy. I will continue to purchase GoPro products for as long as they make them.

I know GoPro has gotten a bad reputation for the previous Karma Drone because of the battery problems and then recall. However the new (2017) model is great. Battery issue seems to be fixed and mine has not fell out of the sky (KNOCK ON WOOD).
I choose the Karma because of everything you get. It is truly so much more than just a drone. The drone is great and easy to use. Make sure to read the manual and set it up properly. Then you also get the Go Pro Hero 6. Well that is what I choose. Also the Karma grip. So overall you get a whole video and photo setup. The photos are not DSLR quality but they do the trick for basic aerial photography.
I am very happy with the purchase.

My first drone. Love it but returned it due to lost of connection from camera to drone. I'll say about 7th or 8th time I wanted to use it it wouldn't connect and would not fly. I tried different ways to make it fly or find the problem but wouldn't work. WALKED in to geek squad repair center and all I got was go pro number to call. After several attempts and parts recieved from go pro to replace it still didn't work. After a few weeks dealing with go pro over the phone I gave up and returned it to bestbuy were I had purchased it. I lost the warranty money I paid for it for only having it for a few months total of 4 if I'm not mistaken. I got what I paid for the drone but not the warranty or the sd card go pro made me buy because according to them that was the problem witch it wasn't. Other than that it flys great and the picture and video quality is great, I'll say one of a kind because I can't get the same quality from the dji zoom I purchased same day I returned the karma. To bad go pro doesn't have a repair facility for their karma. I found out until the end and they expected for me to be their repair man and I lost a lot of time going back and forth with them. I love my dji zoom but I'm still trying to get the same quality video as I got from the go pro camera. It's one of the things I loved from the karma besides the caring case that it comes with to carry everything needed inside and safely.

This drone is great and a great value. You get the Karma drone, hero 6 black camera and the karma grip for around the same price as the mavic. I’ve been using the Karma for a month and it flys perfectly.
