Let me start off by saying this, if you have a gopro hero 5 or 6 but dont yet have a spare battery, stop reading this review and complete your checkout already. Just buy it. Go do it. Now. Having a spare battery for ANY electronic is always a great thing to have no matter how great the battery life of that piece of tech is. But the annoying part is actually having to use it. Most electronics these days can be used for a whole day no problem, and then you charge overnight and start it all over. Unfortunately, that is not the case with the new gopro line. Ive had my gopro hero 6 for about 4 months now and use it extensively. Happy to say that I actually havent needed to use the spare battery in the same day. I am keen on maximizing my battery life by altering settings that affect it and turning off/charging up throughout the day when I can. However, I do always have the spare battery with me wherever I go, just in case. There have been times where I get down to 20-30% before 1pm, but luck out and am able to charge it in the car when driving to the next place/event. I also keep an external battery with me at all times and use that infrequently. All that aside, the bottom line is this. The new gopro line doesnt have great battery life. For the 5 or the 6, depending on your use, you may or may not use the spare in the same day as your original battery. However, because of the rather underwhelming battery life, having a spare is invaluable. You always have a spare tire in your car. You should always have a spare battery for your gopro. I was lucky enough that when I bought my gopro 6 from bestbuy, it actually came with a free battery as a bundle so that was awesome. Thanks bestbuy! If you didnt luck out like me, just swallow the $20 bucks and buy a spare. You'll be grateful for that one time you actually need it. 3/5 stars because the battery life of these batteries aren't great. But the concept of having a replaceable battery that charges at a decent speed, and be able to whip one out when you need it is a 5 star thing. Im glad gopro didnt make a nonreplaceable battery. That'd be terrible. END LINE: The battery life is meh.....which is why I highly recommend you buy a spare.

The battery is necessary for this new GoPro Hero 5. I have three batteries (possibly will be buying a 4th) because I feel like it just doesn't last long. I don't record in 4K at all. I have nothing that can display or even render 4K. the highest res I record in is 1080@60. and even then, on avg I've gotten 45min-1hr record time. I used to have the hero 4 silver and I would just hook on the battery backpack and be set, but now, I find myself needing multiple batteries to avoid a paperweight out where the action is. I keep the wifi/bluetooth off as well as the voice commands, to extend battery life as long as possible. regardless of that, I would recommend only this battery to use in your GoPro. I wouldn't trust a generic one.

I'm not sure if it's the way the battery is designed, or how much power is required for the GoPro hero 7 and up uses, but these batteries do not last very long. I was filming continuously with the screen turned off, and after about an hour, the battery only had less than 20% battery life! The good thing about these batteries is you can easily swap out with a charged one, but I wish they lasted longer so I have less gear that I need to keep track of. The older Hero3+ internal battery lasts three times longer, but it is built inside the GoPro.

I have yet to have a problem with any of my GoPro branded batteries. I have seen several reviews where individuals have been using third party batteries for their Hero5’s. I never have been on the band wagon for third party batteries after a bad experience several years ago in which a third party battery swelled up in the battery compartment on a digital camera. From what I understand, GoPro released a firmware update that disables the Hero5 from using third party batteries. These batteries are not that expensive and seem to hold up rather well. I have a Hero4 Black and bought three batteries for that rig and they are still going strong to this day. I’m assuming that these Hero5 batteries will hold up in the same manner and provide years of reliable service.

These batteries have a bad habit of the plastic tab breaking off which makes it hard to get the battery out of the camera. These batteries also have a bad habit of swelling up and then they are hard to get in/out of the camera. Based on these two items, if you use your GoPro frequently like I do on my motorcycle, you will find you need to replace batteries about every 6 months. So while the construction is poor, GoPro have priced these relatively cheap at $19.99 so it doesn't break the bank when you have to buy new. That price is much more reasonable than Sony or Nikon would charge.

UPDATE: I have purchased a second battery, to have with me just in case... I do recommend purchasing the gopro dual port Supercharger, it charges the batteries much quicker than the usb into the computer... Now, after testing this battery and the original, I found that recording video continuosly in 2K, 30frames per second, my battery lasted 1hr. 25min. before it showed only approx. 3min. left before it would shut off, it probably would last longer if I did not have other things going, like image stabilizer, etc... so being a battery that just came out..., this is probably where it should be... I would recommend this.

This is a spare battery that I purchased for my Hero7 GoPro for a total of three batteries to take on an extended trip to New Zealand. So far the battery works as expected and it's a good thing I had three since it seems like the batteries do not last long at all in the GoPro!! Before you know it the power is way down and time to change the battery for a full charge. It's a nice small package...the Hero7 and the batteries, but along with the small size is the reduced life/charge of the battery.

    Pull Tab Doesn't Cut It

This is a replacement battery. The first one was a huge disappointment when the pull tab used to remove the battery from the camera came off on the first pull. It was very difficult to get it out without damaging the camera. My local Best Buy was quick to rectify the situation. There's no other choice than to use these batteries, so I'd still have to recommend since it's essential to the camera working.

There are many cheaper batteries that you could get but I would go with the GoPro brand batteries as you could damage your GoPro with the cheaper brands. Also you just take out the risk of having to deal with errors on the cheaper batteries. Yes GoPro brand batteries are a bit more expensive but would rather not having to deal with batteries issues during a recording or time out with the camera.

If you've ever used a gopro then you know how annoying it is to be in the middle of an adventure with a dead battery. In the past I've bought off name batteries and they work ok but there is some sort of communication between the battery and camera which doesn't work right with them. Like the camera won't show battery life so you don't know how much juice is left. Super annoying and never happens with the gopro brand pack. For $20 it's a pretty good deal too.

Bought two of these batteries for backups for my vacation last summer and they worked flawlessly. I was going to try other aftermarket brands but i read too many issues and problems with them to take a chance. I didnt miss a beat while i was on vacation with these batteries and would recommend these to my family and friends. I would not try and save a few dollars on aftermarket Batteries and end up missing out on some great photos or videos because of battery issues.

Loving my new GoPro Hero 6 so much I had to get extra batteries so that I could record and take pictures all day. I purchased three extra batteries for my two GoPro Hero 6 cameras but have never used more than two per camera in a whole twelve hours of on off and left on for time lapse video and pictures. I would highly recommend at least one extra battery because they take quite a while to charge and it will come in extremely handy on those long days out shooting footage.

I have no complaints with the OEM GoPro batteries. I also fly drones but some of the "improved" third party batteries DON't have the same circuitry and batteries may fail due to inferior components/specs. They promise more time in the air but 3 months later, you need a new battery. Try to get warranty! GoPro cameras are quality products. They wouldn't be on top of the sport cam market with inferior battery products. Enough said.

I needed back up batteries for the gopro session five i just bought, picked these up and they carry the same life that the original does. they appear to be exactly the same. no complaints they work fine and i would recommend if you are using a gopro. make sure you get the correct kind, i mistakenly picked up the wrong ones for an older gopro at first, returned and exchanged without a hitch. they are clearly labeled on the package but i just wasn't paying close enough attention.

I wish Go Pros had better battery life. My Go Pro Hero 6 Black will give you about one hour of recording before a new battery is required. For any extended outings a new battery is pretty much mandatory. I would recommend getting one battery, and the dual battery charger (which comes with one more battery) and you should be in good shape. I don’t mess around with third party batteries, so the Go Pro battery is the way to go.

If you own the GoPro 6 (or your GoPro 5 is over a year old)....this is a must. On my recent snowboarding trip the battery only lasted about 4 hours (shooting 4k). The extra battery allowed me to make it through the whole day (assuming you memory card can hold all your great shots...recommend ExtremePro 128gb). Battery is small and easy to carry in pocket for when you are ready to exchange. Nice fabric tab to allow for easy removal.

Nothing really bad or exceptionally good to say about the battery. The camera seems to really burn through a single battery quickly, especially when connected to my phone via WiFi. I recommend always having an extra battery but I would actually recommend buying the GoPro dual charger ( AADBD-001) which comes with an extra battery as well as an extra type C USB cord and you can also keep your extra batteries stored inside the charger when not in use.

This battery is working great and is priced right in my opinion. On my Hero 5 Black, I seem to get better life than earlier models - this is on 1080P, 60 FPS, and voice control on. I've had no heating issues or bulging after a few complete charges. I am also surprised that the cold weather is not draining it as quickly like earlier models used to.

Extra Batteries for the GoPro 5 Black are a must because they generally last for about an hour or so of 1080p/60fps video recording but can be much less if you keep the rear LCD panel on continuously or have the GoPro connected to your phone via. Bluetooth or WiFi. The GoPro's built-in GPS also drains the battery much quicker or if you shoot in 4K video. Also consider the GoPro Battery Charger that charges two of these batteries at a time.

    Necessity for longer recording sessions

To be expected, the replacement/spare Hero 5, 6 and 7 battery is exactly what's needed for longer recording sessions. Truthfully, I can't imagine not having 3-5 for an afternoon of shooting. If you don't have a spare, I'd encourage everyone to at least pickup one additional battery. Nothing worse than having to cut recording short because of a dead battery.
