Ease of use, Great for seniors, Set up

This has made a huge difference for dad’s communication efforts. Large buttons and limited options keep him from calling random wrong numbers. Easy to use and easy to set up...VERY cost effective too since we no longer have to pay for services he has no interest in. I highly recommend this phone for seniors who just don’t want all the bells and whistles we are now forced to buy on normal cell service.

I am a voluntary care giver for an 88-year-old senior, let’s call him HWO, who has poor vision and limited dexterity in his hands. He is also very techno-phobic (“..I don’t trust dem computers..”). After I accidentally ran HWO’s old cell phone (an 8-year-old Nokia flip phone) through a laundry cycle, I decided to buy a new phone for him. There are very few phones in the market that are exclusively designed for people of his age. After researching extensively, I decided to buy the Great Call Flip. As someone that appreciates thoughtfully engineered products, I am so far impressed by this flip phone, with a few caveats. I am intrigued enough by this phone that I decided to write this detailed review based on me observing HWO use this phone over the past month. The phone is well designed and has good build quality. Everything about this phone, including the keypad, screen, interface, volume and service plans, is optimized for seniors or people otherwise looking for a very simple phone. The phone works on the Verizon network (it doesn’t take a SIM card so you can’t use it on T-Mobile or AT&T) and seems to be locked to the network. Activation is easy (well, not for HWO obviously) and I had it working out of the box in less than 30 minutes. Activation costs $28 (one-time cost). The plans are simple to select and understand. I signed him up for a basic talk and text plan (HWO cannot text but it is only $3 a month, so I kept it). The 5-star button on the key pad is supposed to connect you straight away to an agent, but you have to subscribe to a Health and Safety package in addition to the talk and text plan. In the absence of the additional package, I believe pressing the 5-star button connects you to the emergency services. When you flip open the phone, it plays a loud faux dial tone. While that sounds silly, HWO appreciates it as it tells him the phone is ‘ready’. The menu defaults to phone book. The home screen shows you a few menu options but hides everything else. There is no battery indicator, no network icon or signal strength indicator (that is just how HWO likes it). Navigating the interface is very easy (if HWO can do it, anyone can). If you get lost in the menu navigation, flipping the phone close and opening it again brings you back to the ‘home screen’ with the phone book selected. The screen fonts are large and legible, even for people with limited vision. You interact with the phone by pressing the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ keys, or using the Up and Down arrows to navigate. The keys on the keypad too are large and legible and well-spaced apart. The phone volume, both for ringing and calling, is reasonably loud. The phone also makes a loud noise when it has charged to notify you. The phone also has a basic camera, that also doubles as a ‘magnifier’, that frankly seems a bit gimmicky to me. Making and receive calls is straightforward. I was able to train HWO on using the phone in about 15 minutes. One of the issues with the phone is the battery life, which is disappointing to the say the least. For a non-smart phone, the battery life on this phone is very short. Even with average usage (less than 30 minutes of daily talk), the battery gets close to zero in under 2 days. My 2-year-old Android phone lasts longer than that. His old Nokia flip would last 2 weeks (!) on a single charge. The network signal strength (Verizon) is quite strong in our area so it cannot be that the battery is draining due to the phone looking for the network. While it is not a deal breaker, it is a nuisance since I have to ensure that he has remembered to put his phone on the charging cradle every day, or he runs the risk of not being able to contact me. Overall, I am quite impressed by the Great Call flip and how well the hardware, interface and calling plans are designed and integrated to appeal to the target customer. I am frankly surprised that there is no other comparable phone in the American market.

The phone itself is great. Simple, large buttons, large screen. Got it for my 90 year old Father in Law in a nursing home just before the lockdown. I need to change his calling plan from what I originally set up. He has dementia and is terribly confused about why no one is visiting him. This results in multiple calls a day to the family numbers I put in the phone. (48 in one day to his son, as an example.) I have been trying for almost three weeks to change his plan. Can't do it online (even though everything says you can and should.) Hold time up to 30 minutes with no contact (my usual limit is 15 minutes before I hang up.) Have called 5 times so far. Emails are not answered (3 of those sent so far, directly off the website.) So yeah, the Best Buy part was wonderful. Just make sure you get the plan you need from the start. I had no idea I would be needing 1000 minutes of calling or that he would figure out how to turn texting back on and randomly send texts without realizing it.

My mother has dementia so it’s very difficult for her to use technology. That being said, she learned the Jitterbug fairly easy and when she has trouble doing something she can call customer service and they are incredibly helpful and patient with her. Very helpful to me when I can’t be there to assist! Wonderful product backed by a wonderful company!!

I bought this for my disabled brother, and he loves it. It is simple to use and has great features. The sound quality is great, and the button are large. There is 1 thing that I do not like; a charge for texting (that should be free). My brother lives with his adult daughters and several grandchildren of varying ages. He also has limited use of his hands, so he has trouble texting. When I saw that the bill had increased $30 one month due mainly to texting and sending pictures, I knew that his family members were taking his phone and using it continuously. I discontinued the texting, and that solved that problem. Another problem is that at least twice, one of the small grandchildren pushed the 5* button, and I received phone calls that the 5* was activated, way after the fact. I had to call my nieces to check on him; he was fine, but they couldn't find the phone. I finally got Great Call to start calling them first, in case of a REAL emergency; I don't live nearby. All in all, I am glad my brother has help if he needs it.

Purchased the Jitterbug flip phone for my 95 year old father. I did have a medical alert bracelet for him and he refused to wear it or take it with him into the bathroom, etc. It was a waste of money so we returned it. I purchased the Jitterbug, hoping he would not reject it. As it turns out, he loves the phone and has no trouble using it or carrying it with him . The audio comes through loud and clear and he loves the speaker function. Plus if someone calls he can see who it is from the window on the front of the phone. He also really loves that the address book is so easy and he can call me without having to dial numbers. The Yes/No logic is very easy for him as well. I would recommend this phone to anyone with an elderly parent.

Overated! On the first week of purchase if the phone there were 51 texts to the phone and I had not given the number to anyone. My phone was charged for texts that I did not authorized. When talking to the customer service provider they were very rude and said the the charges would remain. I had to cancelled the text feature is order not to be charged for text that I did not wish to receive nor authorize. Now I have no text feature. The monthly cost differed tremendously from what was on the product box. I could go on and on.

Phone works great . The downside was it took 4 hours and 7 phone calls to activate service with great call. I was put on hold several times. After listening to endless recordings the call would disconnect. Once connected with a csr the line was so distorted you could only hear every other word. Their csr personnel are working from home and it's not working very well. I even tried to activate on line to no avail. They need to fix the issues.I almost took the phone back.

I bought this GreatCall Flip Prepaid Cell Phone for my dad for Father's Day as we need to get a new Tracfone before Dec. 2020 as his Tracfone was just 3G. I kept the old Tracfone for a week, so he could have both phones to get used to the GreatCall phone and not feel like he didn't have a cell phone to use--in case of an emergency that week. I activated it and that was quick, plus easy to do. Then I went on my late mom's laptop computer at his house to type in the information that was needed in the emergency information part, plus typed in his directory at the same time, too. Again, that was easy for me to do, plus I can update and add information whenever i need to do that from my home computer. He's understanding how to use it, so was able to discontinue the Tracfone within the first week he had the GreatCall flip phone. Almost seems TOO easy for him to use! Nice to just pay for what he needs now, but the options are there to add-on whatever he may need later, too. Monthly plan is reasonable cost for what we are getting with the "red button" available 24/7, too. Thanks for making this whole transition very easy for both of us! I would highly recommend this cell phone for every senior and makes the caregiving even easier.

It is hard to get used to for my Mom who had a Verizon flip phone before. It is different than those flip phones and that made it difficult. This one has many nice features like magnifying glass but the address book is not very user friendly. You must scroll through every name to get to where you want to go. We did add the speed dial but then she has to remember who is number 6, etc. The help voice comes and is very confusing for my elderly Mom.

    Difficult Setup...

    |
    Posted .

After months of researching user friendly phones for my friend, we settled on the Jitterbug Flip phone,,, The tech desks at BestBuy, Target & Verizon all agreed that the Jitterbug is absolutely the best phone design for seniors... The large back-lit buttons are easy to see even in poor light... The screen is bright and the screen's GUI is simple to use... However, GreatCall is the only service provider for the Jitterbug... While the customer support is very friendly & knowledgeable, the phone's features are all à la carte...99¢ for customer assistance in importing your existing contacts, and $3/mo for voicemail... In 25 years, I've never encountered a cell phone service provider that charged extra for voicemail... There are a number of other options available for an additional monthly fee... We opted out of data for the obvious reason that the user is 91 years old... When calling Customer Service, the first thing we encountered was a recorded message noting that there had been an increase of $1.10/mo to the Regulatory Service fee,,, The actual monthly cost of your Jitterbug Flip phone with voicemail & text will be considerable more than the touted $18/mo... We have spent the last week trying to set this thing up, and we still have a number of steps left to go... Please Note: the maximum number of rings, before going to a voice message, is 4 and can not be increased...

We've had this side-by-side door-in-door refrigerator for about 2 weeks now and I love it more every day. I thought I wanted a French door fridge like I'd had before, but I've discovered my new freezer makes it easier to get to the foods I am trying to find. And the door-in-door feature keeps small jars and bottles from being swallowed up in the regular shelves. This fridge makes great ice and even the water has a very clean taste. I'm really glad I made this choice.

Old school phone for stubborn old boomers. Large numbers due to failing eyes and small enough to fit into a pocket. Makes phone calls and rudimentary test messages because boomers are stubborn and don't like all the new tech for kids. Overall, its a basic cell phone, and does whats advertised, which is all it needed to do. The previous jitterbug lasted for 6 years before the wear and tear caused it to fail, so good money for the std life of the device.

We needed a cell phone to meet the needs of a disabled family meeting. Having tried several other phones over the years but all were just too complicated for our family member to use. The "jitterbug" phone was just what we needed. Its design and menus are easy to understand and simple to use. Our family member loves it.
