I am a voluntary care giver for an 88-year-old senior, let’s call him HWO, who has poor vision and limited dexterity in his hands. He is also very techno-phobic (“..I don’t trust dem computers..”). After I accidentally ran HWO’s old cell phone (an 8-year-old Nokia flip phone) through a laundry cycle, I decided to buy a new phone for him. There are very few phones in the market that are exclusively designed for people of his age. After researching extensively, I decided to buy the Great Call Flip. As someone that appreciates thoughtfully engineered products, I am so far impressed by this flip phone, with a few caveats. I am intrigued enough by this phone that I decided to write this detailed review based on me observing HWO use this phone over the past month. The phone is well designed and has good build quality. Everything about this phone, including the keypad, screen, interface, volume and service plans, is optimized for seniors or people otherwise looking for a very simple phone. The phone works on the Verizon network (it doesn’t take a SIM card so you can’t use it on T-Mobile or AT&T) and seems to be locked to the network. Activation is easy (well, not for HWO obviously) and I had it working out of the box in less than 30 minutes. Activation costs $28 (one-time cost). The plans are simple to select and understand. I signed him up for a basic talk and text plan (HWO cannot text but it is only $3 a month, so I kept it). The 5-star button on the key pad is supposed to connect you straight away to an agent, but you have to subscribe to a Health and Safety package in addition to the talk and text plan. In the absence of the additional package, I believe pressing the 5-star button connects you to the emergency services. When you flip open the phone, it plays a loud faux dial tone. While that sounds silly, HWO appreciates it as it tells him the phone is ‘ready’. The menu defaults to phone book. The home screen shows you a few menu options but hides everything else. There is no battery indicator, no network icon or signal strength indicator (that is just how HWO likes it). Navigating the interface is very easy (if HWO can do it, anyone can). If you get lost in the menu navigation, flipping the phone close and opening it again brings you back to the ‘home screen’ with the phone book selected. The screen fonts are large and legible, even for people with limited vision. You interact with the phone by pressing the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ keys, or using the Up and Down arrows to navigate. The keys on the keypad too are large and legible and well-spaced apart. The phone volume, both for ringing and calling, is reasonably loud. The phone also makes a loud noise when it has charged to notify you. The phone also has a basic camera, that also doubles as a ‘magnifier’, that frankly seems a bit gimmicky to me. Making and receive calls is straightforward. I was able to train HWO on using the phone in about 15 minutes. One of the issues with the phone is the battery life, which is disappointing to the say the least. For a non-smart phone, the battery life on this phone is very short. Even with average usage (less than 30 minutes of daily talk), the battery gets close to zero in under 2 days. My 2-year-old Android phone lasts longer than that. His old Nokia flip would last 2 weeks (!) on a single charge. The network signal strength (Verizon) is quite strong in our area so it cannot be that the battery is draining due to the phone looking for the network. While it is not a deal breaker, it is a nuisance since I have to ensure that he has remembered to put his phone on the charging cradle every day, or he runs the risk of not being able to contact me. Overall, I am quite impressed by the Great Call flip and how well the hardware, interface and calling plans are designed and integrated to appeal to the target customer. I am frankly surprised that there is no other comparable phone in the American market.

The phone itself is perfect for my elderly mother - large buttons, large print, easy-to-navigate screen, extra-loud ringers. It's just a flip phone with texts and a camera with no other confusing features she would never use anyway. I can even update her contacts for her online. Helpful customer service agents will update, provide medical advice, or even arrange rides... for a price. There's even a helpful button to summon medical help in an emergency... again, for a small monthly fee. 5 stars for this simple, intuitive device itself. Unfortunately, the small monthly fees add up quickly for a prepaid phone so that taxes and other fees make Great Call's $18 monthly bill into $25. The phone is "pre-paid" only in the sense that you're paying for the coming month's service, rather than the past month. And "minutes" never transfer to the next month. Their service is designed perfectly for seniors, but it's not the bargain its literature suggests. Would it be so hard to explain in advance all of the separately required taxes/fees that were included with her old prepaid phone? At least there are no contracts, and customer service is super-helpful. Just be aware that the cost will be higher than expected.

First, I would say this is the best phone I have seen for seniors. We bought the phone for my mom who has dementia & challenges with new technology so didn't want one with internet to confuse her & we opted for a plan with no texting as the simpler for her the better. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars is that random texts and spam texts do still get thru on the phone and the phone provider, Great Call, charges for every text that comes thru even though you don't want texting. The only way to get out of it is to go to another plan that includes texting and pay extra which to me is a ripoff way for them to make more money. Multiple random spam texts kept coming thru right after we bought it and put it on the charger before we sent it to her. Some seniors like my mom are not interested in texting or unable to use it. Oh, one other negative is it has an annoying chime that continues after the phone is charged that you can't turn off and it continues like every 5 minutes for about 30 minutes. Other than that, the phone itself is very easy to use & just what we were looking for. The words on the screen and the buttons are very large which makes it easier for her to see and use. To answer a call, all they have to do is flip open the cell and say "hello" and to hang up, just close it. It does have a lot of good features.

The phone itself is great. Simple, large buttons, large screen. Got it for my 90 year old Father in Law in a nursing home just before the lockdown. I need to change his calling plan from what I originally set up. He has dementia and is terribly confused about why no one is visiting him. This results in multiple calls a day to the family numbers I put in the phone. (48 in one day to his son, as an example.) I have been trying for almost three weeks to change his plan. Can't do it online (even though everything says you can and should.) Hold time up to 30 minutes with no contact (my usual limit is 15 minutes before I hang up.) Have called 5 times so far. Emails are not answered (3 of those sent so far, directly off the website.) So yeah, the Best Buy part was wonderful. Just make sure you get the plan you need from the start. I had no idea I would be needing 1000 minutes of calling or that he would figure out how to turn texting back on and randomly send texts without realizing it.

My mother has dementia so it’s very difficult for her to use technology. That being said, she learned the Jitterbug fairly easy and when she has trouble doing something she can call customer service and they are incredibly helpful and patient with her. Very helpful to me when I can’t be there to assist! Wonderful product backed by a wonderful company!!

Overated! On the first week of purchase if the phone there were 51 texts to the phone and I had not given the number to anyone. My phone was charged for texts that I did not authorized. When talking to the customer service provider they were very rude and said the the charges would remain. I had to cancelled the text feature is order not to be charged for text that I did not wish to receive nor authorize. Now I have no text feature. The monthly cost differed tremendously from what was on the product box. I could go on and on.

Phone works great . The downside was it took 4 hours and 7 phone calls to activate service with great call. I was put on hold several times. After listening to endless recordings the call would disconnect. Once connected with a csr the line was so distorted you could only hear every other word. Their csr personnel are working from home and it's not working very well. I even tried to activate on line to no avail. They need to fix the issues.I almost took the phone back.

    Difficult Setup...

    |
    Posted .

After months of researching user friendly phones for my friend, we settled on the Jitterbug Flip phone,,, The tech desks at BestBuy, Target & Verizon all agreed that the Jitterbug is absolutely the best phone design for seniors... The large back-lit buttons are easy to see even in poor light... The screen is bright and the screen's GUI is simple to use... However, GreatCall is the only service provider for the Jitterbug... While the customer support is very friendly & knowledgeable, the phone's features are all à la carte...99¢ for customer assistance in importing your existing contacts, and $3/mo for voicemail... In 25 years, I've never encountered a cell phone service provider that charged extra for voicemail... There are a number of other options available for an additional monthly fee... We opted out of data for the obvious reason that the user is 91 years old... When calling Customer Service, the first thing we encountered was a recorded message noting that there had been an increase of $1.10/mo to the Regulatory Service fee,,, The actual monthly cost of your Jitterbug Flip phone with voicemail & text will be considerable more than the touted $18/mo... We have spent the last week trying to set this thing up, and we still have a number of steps left to go... Please Note: the maximum number of rings, before going to a voice message, is 4 and can not be increased...

It is hard to get used to for my Mom who had a Verizon flip phone before. It is different than those flip phones and that made it difficult. This one has many nice features like magnifying glass but the address book is not very user friendly. You must scroll through every name to get to where you want to go. We did add the speed dial but then she has to remember who is number 6, etc. The help voice comes and is very confusing for my elderly Mom.

This phone has been great fro my 92 year old Grandfather. My only suggestion would be to move the buttons that are on the side. Seniors sometimes have trouble holding things with limited dexterity. My Grandfather accidentally lowers the volume when talking. The phone service company was able to move everything from his old phone while I was driving to deliver this new phone to him. No issues whatsoever!

Granted it's been a while since I had a flip phone, but mine was way more user friendly than this one is. My mom is very technology challenged so I thought this would be perfect for her. Wrong ! Not sure why but it likes to beep a lot in the charging process, and would beep all night long so she's not able to have it in her room. The volume buttons happen to be right where my mom holds the phone so she keeps turning the volume down (without knowing it) while she's talking and then ends up missing calls because it's been turned down. The speaker is on the back of the phone, which when facing up, as most people set it down like, it makes it even more difficult to hear it. Other than all those things, the phone is adequate.

Great phone for my elderly dad

    Pros mentioned:
Ease of use, Great for seniors, Large numbers
    Cons mentioned:
    Ringer volume

My 90+ year old dad needed a phone that he can actually hear. His old flip phone just wasn't cutting it(both ringer and earpiece volume). However it had to be a phone that was simple to operate. this fits those requirements. After setting up the phone I sat down with him and went through ALL of the ringtones to find the one that he could hear best. I programmed in the most common numbers that he calls and so far he has had very little confusion(primarily figuring out who the calls that he missed came from). The charger base is simple, so he is actually keeping it charged. The cost of the phone and monthly charges are reasonable. there are only two reasons that I didn't give it a 5 star rating. 1) "one-touch 5Star" button is an additional charge each month, which is NOT clear in the advertising material(or on the box). 2) When he holds it too far away from his mouth, you can't hear ANYTHING that he is saying(at least he can hear me tell him to hold it closer to his mouth). All told...I rate it highly.

My mother has dementia and it’s hard for her to remember what to do on a smart phone. I switched her to this phone and now she constantly calls me. Pick your battles! Nevertheless, it’s a big flip phone that is easy to open, big screen, large letter font, and comes with optional service such as locate my phone. I’ve used locate the phone feature and use their paid service in the event there is an emergency they call me.

My husband is enjoying this phone. He never wanted to carry a phone around before and now he is using it when he leaves the house. It’s great to be able to be in touch with him when he is not home. Also, it is great to use it as a land line since we know longer have one.
