Great on the surface, but...returned product

I bought the Jitterbug Flip for my dad who has severe essential tremors in both hands - much like shaking from Parkinson's. We needed large buttons and simple usage. I thought this would be a slam dunk. He had been using a 15+ year old Samsung flip with small buttons and the quality/performance was waning so we wanted to get him something better even though he hates changes. He reluctantly agreed to go with Jitterbug, but do yourself a favor and read this review before diving in! 1. Do NOT 'port' current mobile number to Jitterbug phone until you TRY THE JITTERBUG with it's assigned number first! Seems like common sense, but I wasn't aware that could be done. I thought you needed to switch everything over then use the phone. I made a major error and ported his AT&T number to Jitterbug then long story short, we needed to get his original AT&T service back so it took HOURS to unwind. Very stressful. Thankfully we worked in person with an AT&T manager and he was super helpful with the whole thing. 2. Bluetooth in dad's 2017 Cadillac CTS did not work with Jitterbug. Incoming calls made the Jitterbug freeze and outbound calls were not possible using the car's hands free option. I talked to experts from Jitterbug and Cadillac -- nobody knew how to help. During the bluetooth test in his car, the Jitterbug phone "froze" and went dark. I couldn't disconnect an incoming call nor could I power cycle the Jitterbug. At that point I was done and knew I'd return the Jitterbug because Bluetooth is completely unreliable and that was a deal-breaker. 3. My dad didn't like Yes and No buttons on the Jitterbug -- they aren't color coded either. He is used to a green Send button and red End button. It wasn't as intuitive and Jitterbug should consider color-coding those buttons. 4. I know he liked the larger numbers, but that was about it. Scrolling through the menu was actually very complex and required many clicks to select certain things. I was shocked given this is designed for elderly people. 5. Note: GreatCall charges $3/month for voicemail. That was not disclosed to me when I chose his service plan which was the cheapest one available at $14.99/month. So all in with the service plan, voicemail and taxes it would be about $25/month for the dirt cheap plan. 6. If you want voice command dialing it is only activated by GreatCall customer service. You cannot set it up yourself. Moral of this story -- TRY THE PHONE first with the assigned number and get to know all the features and usability before changing your current service to Jitterbug. It will save you a ton of time and stress. The phone was returned 2 days ago.

After months of researching user friendly phones for my friend, we settled on the Jitterbug Flip phone,,, The tech desks at BestBuy, Target & Verizon all agreed that the Jitterbug is absolutely the best phone design for seniors... The large back-lit buttons are easy to see even in poor light... The screen is bright and the screen's GUI is simple to use... However, GreatCall is the only service provider for the Jitterbug... While the customer support is very friendly & knowledgeable, the phone's features are all à la carte...99¢ for customer assistance in importing your existing contacts, and $3/mo for voicemail... In 25 years, I've never encountered a cell phone service provider that charged extra for voicemail... There are a number of other options available for an additional monthly fee... We opted out of data for the obvious reason that the user is 91 years old... When calling Customer Service, the first thing we encountered was a recorded message noting that there had been an increase of $1.10/mo to the Regulatory Service fee,,, The actual monthly cost of your Jitterbug Flip phone with voicemail & text will be considerable more than the touted $18/mo... We have spent the last week trying to set this thing up, and we still have a number of steps left to go... Please Note: the maximum number of rings, before going to a voice message, is 4 and can not be increased...

This phone reminds me of the cell phones I had years ago. It needs alot of updating and I do not know if it is "Jitterbug" or "Great Call" that attaches all the up sells to this phone. I have never paid for voicemail or text messaging. I would like to know why you would pay an extra 10 cents to send a photo to a Recipient using your text message allowance, and why you need text message allowance. I have never paid to send a text message. If I am reading the instructional book correctly they have something called a phone book which the phone user manages online. This is apparently where your contacts are located. This is how they can control the amount of contacts you have and how often you text message them or send them photos. I have never come across this before. The charging dock is a nice feature. The large numerals on the keypad is nice along with the easy to read prompts. I like the fact that your phone number is at the top of the phone when you flip it open. Keying in a text message is definitely out of date. If you have a long text message you will be exhausted going through the letters of the alphabet that are placed under the numerals on the keypad, let alone if you need to add numerals to the text message to. They need a dial pad for the phone and a keypad for text messaging. Last but not least is the 5 Star Button Service. I tested it and it works without I assume not being charged. "Urgent Care" and "Med Coach" are probably good services. I say this because I could not register with greatcall.com to see how "Med Coach" was set up. The other 3 programs "The Wellness Call", "The Check-In Call" and "Daily Health Tips" should be turned into apps. It great that it has Blue Tooth. The Games are fun to play and the instructional book is easy to read.

Better for eldery than normal cell but some issues

Bought this for my 92 year old mother. Setup was simple enough but there are still some issues we encountered with the phone. After a week or so i got a call that the phone was not charging. Seems that one of the pins in the charging cradle was bent and not contacting the bottom of the phone. Had to fix it with a paper clip. The pins are quite delicate and can be easily bent if you are not careful placing the phone back in the cradle. This is something that has already been solved for cordless phones. Second problem has to do with the up/down buttons on the side of the phone. These activate the ringer volume when just picking up the phone if pressed. And seems like when my mother grabs the phone to answer it she is reducing the ringer volume. So next call either it is very low or now switched off altogether. Would be much better to have this only possible through the phone settings. Third problem was the phone locked up at some point. Outside display had date and time frozen and buttons would do nothing. Pulled the battery and reinserted and it was fine. Guessing it was from a static hit. Probably would occur to many phones. So not a trouble free solution for me.

Bought this for my 88 year old mother and getting it set up is interesting. First off, I wanted to keep her old phone number. He said OK but I found out later that they gave me a new # and the only way to change it is to give them the Acct # of the old including PIN, and Password along with several other pieces of info. You also need to keep that acct active until the change which can take up to 3 business days. While I do understand why this is, it would have been nice if he told me. The thing that angers me the most, is that to get voice messages, you have to purchase the middle package which is $10.00 more. Nowhere did I see that listed. The agent kept trying to get me to buy more items. Not sure I trust the company

    Good phone with fatal flaw

Got this phone for my grandmother to replace a much older Jitterbug-branded cell phone (a Samsung flip phone sold in the early 2010s). The numbers and screen are huge, which is a good point, but when we attempted to pair it to her 2011 Lincoln MKS so she could use it with Microsoft Sync ... we hit the wall, and the phone's biggest flaw: the phonebook could not be uploaded to Sync for use while driving. Sync itself reported that the phone did not support this critical feature. If you're going to get this for someone who does not drive or will not need it to pair to anything more than a headset or earpiece, it's probably a good choice. If, however, this will use any sort of in-car connectivity, be prepared to be disappointed. It has been reported to Greatcall/Jitterbug for review, as apparently this is their first partnership with Alcatel, the maker of this particular phone.

I'm disappointed with this phone. I bought this phone believing that the speaker on this phone was one of the best in the industry. It is not. In a quiet room, the speaker was barely audible. So I thought maybe I picked up a bad phone. I returned it to best Buy and exchanged it for a new one. The same problem persisted with the second phone. Jitterbug's advertisement of a loud and clear speaker is just false. The lack of a decent speaker is a total deal breaker for me. But everything else about the phone is fine. Simple UI, large screen and numbers is just as advertised.

I have used the Jitterbug Flip for a few phone calls over the past few days. Call quality is not great and signal strength in my area ranges from poor to fair. I do not like that the text entry requires multiple presses of the numeric keypad to make phonebook entries or to create a text message. I also do not like the audible dial tone when the phone is opened. I have not tried to use the 5Star feature, so cannot comment on its functionality or performance. I do like the size of the phone, the bright screens and large character display, and the keypad is distinctive and easy to use for normal calling. Scrolling through the menu is easy and not at all confusing, feature selection is similarly easy. The speakerphone is a nice feature as well.

Not a good phone for seniors

Pros: Clear display, bright flashlight Cons: Flimsy charging base that tips over easily Phone can be set to Ring or Vibrate, but not both No real battery gauge, just a display that will come up when it needs charging Phone book (contacts) cannot be sorted; it is always in the order that you entered your contacts Phone book only holds names and phone numbers, no other information No real keyboard for text messages, you must hit number keys multiple times to enter letters Photos cannot be sorted; they are always in the order taken Good things about 5Star Service: Urgent Care; access to nurses and doctors MedCoach as a reminder to take medicines Check in call that notifies family/friend if there is a problem

Bought Phone for my elderly Dad. Problem was the speaker volume was barely loader than the earpiece with the volume control set to maximum. Called Great call service twice but unable to resolve problem. Took Phone back to Best Buy and they agreed that the speaker volume was unacceptable so we tested another phone at the store and it had the same problem. Ended up exchanging it for similar type phone that had decent volume that my Dad could hear clearly. Had it not been for the poor volume this would have been an excellent phone

I tried to upgrade my mother in law"s phone to this Jitterbug flip phone but could not activate it when we got it home. I called in and the tech had me pulling the battery and restarting the phone with no success. They mailed a new phone but it would not activate properly freaking out my mother in law who went back to her old phone. Best Buy who now owns Jitterbug could not handle the return other than bringing it physically to the store within 2 weeks of purchase.

Phone only interfaces as a speaker in newer cars. You can not download address book or use voice commands to call out. If not needed for driving, can be a good phone for seniors. Large buttons, yes/no menu driven , features like magnifier and 5 Star touch are all great. Should be more transparent on how it works with cars but seems very good otherwise. Great Call responsive in cancelling service and trying to help. Would be good for seniors who don’t want to learn the newer technology and who don’t drive. Good thought went into the flip phone design.

Phone is really not loud enough for the hard of hearing. Phone can not be set up to vibrate and play an audible sound (one or the other, not both). Company providing cell phone service (e.g., ClearCall) not really very forthcoming as to best packages for elderly -- just tried to sell me the most they could; didn't ask about AARP membership; overcharged me for registration/setup fee. Camera resolution is very low compared to other phones. Really not sold on this phone or the service provider.

I bought this phone for my mom. Thought it would be great! Paid about $100 for it. Just a flip phone with big numbers. Phone was horrible. Could barely hear most of the time. It would cut off during conversations. Not something I would recommend. The service was expensive as well. About $40 a month for talk and text.4

Bought for my elderly mom but it’s not a consistent ringer. I’ve tried multiple times to call it in same room but only rings some of the time. Also, charger is sensitive. Phone is charged standing up in a cradle and must be placed at a certain angle. Not a good characteristic especially since the phone is geared towards the elderly and such.

We got this for my Mom. Great Call said it was wonderful for Seniors, they said it had a really loud ring she could hear all over in her mobile home. This was not true. She also had trouble hearing on it, as there was an echo. So we returned it to Best Buy.
