Good for some seniors but not me

First, let's start with the pluses. The screen has a clear boldface font that is easy to read. The volume is good. Even though it does not have computer access, it can transfer photos to a computer. The keys are large enough to be easy to tap without overlapping into the next key and mistyping. Dialing by voice is helpful. Because it is a flip, no chance of a butt dial. Some (especially the children of older seniors) will love the 5-star option for emergencies and other services. Now for the negatives. The screen is still tiny, only about 1"x2" for the text in a text message. And this is in a phone that is just barely lighter than my existing phone, which is closer to 2"x3" for texts. I love the idea of the magnifier but found it difficult to position so I could read what I thought I had it aimed at. The keys have multiple characters per key so it is onerous to type anything and it cannot send texts by voice. Some might like the simple scroll down menus for options but I have grown accustomed to a touch screen with icons and prefer that; however, if I channel and older friend who never really got the hang of her phone, I expect she would have found scrolling easier. Photos appear rather grainy. Coverage has been a mixed bag. A call to someone whose voice has a tendency to cut off while using my existing phone was quite clear on the Jitterbug. She, on the other hand, said she could hear my ok said my voice sounded "mushy." Also, a voicemail I left myself was not at all good quality. Other calls have generally been ok on both sides. The phone itself described as anywhere from "fair" to "strong" the reception for the areas from which I typically call. As to improvements, number one would be the ability to text by voice. Second would be an actual full keypad. (If there were voice texting, that would not be as important.) Some of these issues do appear to be resolved by Jitterbug's higher-end phone.

Got for father to transfer number from another carrier that no longer had a phone with large buttons. Had to call GreatCall customer service 3 times just for startup. First person very helpful but found out later she didn't know what she was talking about. Other 2 calls were soo long & wasted time. (No 2 people said/did the same thing, one was rude.) Had to pay text charges (not a part of the plan we signed up for) for phone to receive updates right out of the box. Also couldn't transfer contact list from another phone (even though Best Buy & G.C. initially said it was possible) & was told to do it online...we got this phone because of no computer & no internet service where the phone is located! Cannot save call log to contact list so a new number has to be written down & then manually entered. Phone locked up a couple of weeks into service...the only resolution was to remove the battery & hard start. Loud ring is not loud enough to hear outdoors or when phone is in pocket or at work. Overall a lot of money for a less than basic phone with issues. We also wanted it for pictures & there is no way to install extra memory/card. The only benefits are that it has worked for phone calls most of the time & it does have big buttons. Bill is also easy to understand. Be aware also that taxes & "fees" add up to be a lot above the plan price, in our case almost 25% more.

Our first phone started to malfunction after a week. We were able to exchange it for a new one a few days ago and so far so good. The phone is designed well for seniors and I would recommend. However, a word of caution when dealing with GreatCall/GREATCALL, the cell phone service provider/carrier. I would not recommend having seniors (your loved ones) call into to activate their phones on their own. I dealt with two different CS reps (Daniel and later Mawgie) at two different times and they were both shady; for your love one’s protection this is a two-person job. Their script is purposely designed to be confusing and aggressive. The tone of the conversation is FEAR. They use this as a manipulative practice to upsell to much higher service plans. However, later I called tech support and the attendant was very courteous and helpful. JUST BE AWARE AND CAUTIOUS OF THE SALES TEAM.

Too many problems getting the gps to work. The app is buggy had to call customer support several times until it started working. The plans are overpriced for the kinds of minutes you get. If you activate it towards the end of the month they charge you for month and activation fee even though you haven’t used it for 30 days yet . They have a set date for all their customers you can’t change it. They catch you with hidden fees so I thought I was paying for $40 but then they charged me a $10 tax on top of that which made it $50. For this price I could have gone with a prepaid carrier for much less. You can’t change the language on the phone even though during setup it ask what language does the person speak for better service. Spanish should be standard on a Flip phone in 2019.

Could not see the phone before I bought. Only sealed packages, no demo models in the store. Operates a little differant than a standard cell phone. Has YES and NO buttons instead of the typical menu buttons on basic phones. As soon as you open it there is a dial tone. My Mom can use a basic cell phone, so this is confusing. If you're not dialing the phone, you have to hang it up every time you open the phone. I bought basically because of the 5 star service for emergency purposes for an elderly parent who doesn't want to wear the typical assist neck pendant. Yes recommendation is conditional.

    So-called self-activation took three days

After the initial activation call, the phone is supposed to activate itself and give a set-up successful message with the new phone #. It repeatedly gave me an error code and said call customer care. After several calls, where I was told to power off, then immediately restart the process, a staffer looked it up and said it was a problem on their end and to power off for 4 hours. After 5 repeats of this over three days, it worked. Meanwhile, I left a vulnerable relative with no working phone. They also required a phone # to register it, so I gave mine, and she ended up with an out of-state area code that matched my phone, not her address, and it can’t be changed.

I wanted a small, lightweight flip-phone, just a phone, that I can carry in my pocket and this cute phone fit the bill. However, the basic service plan offered was just too skimpy for the price, the unused minutes don't accumulate, and there is an activation fee plus many service features like voice mail are an extra fee. I returned the phone after a week. Admittedly, I am spoiled by my Tracfone smart phone that costs only about $8 a month and has double minutes that accumulate.

It has the 5 star emergency call feature, has feature for people visually impaired, has large numbers that light up the volume is adjustable and is louder than most phones the jitterbug has a voice dial feature which is handy it is small enough to put in your protect and is protected because of its flip feature and has a window in the front so you don't even have to open it and you now who is calling The front of the phone displays the time and the date and whether 5 star is enabled.

This phone was purchase for my 86 year old mother. She is hard of hearing. The speaker phone on this phone is horrible! When speaker is off it is louder than when speaker is on. A normal hearing person can not hear it much less a hearing impaired person. When she calls me on the phone it sounds like she is in a barrel and I have problems understanding her. I would never recommend this phone.

I set up the phone myself, but needed to contact customer service to have my old phone number ported. They said it would take 3 business days and would call if there was a problem. I called the back after the 3 days was past since I still did not have my old number. That was when they told me they couldn’t port my old number and had to keep the new one. I thought they were supposed to contact me if there was a problem. Next time i’m Just going through one of the big companies.

I had previously tried two different cell phones with all the bells and whistles and could not get any assistance to show me how to use them. However, I spent a lot of money trying to get help. There doesn't seem to be any way to learn how to use a complicated cell for an eighty year old customer. Therefore, I had no choice but to revert to a simple flip top with no complicated and hard to understand instructions.

I bought the phone for a senior family member. I liked the price, the one-button emergency feature and the big buttons. The phone is good. But, the price of the activation was a big surprise: $35.00 (plus state and local taxes) . The monthly service "as low as $14.95 a month" as advertised on the box was misleading. You don't get 250 minutes, free long distance or emergency button for less the $36.00 (plus state and local taxes). Even the cheapest plan, plus the emergency button was well over $14.95/month

The phone volume isn't very loud, even on the highest setting. My mom has taken a few calls where the other party stated she sounded like she was on a speaker. When the flip is closed - the font isn't very big. I was hoping that jitterbug would offer "setting" features that allowed you to change and select fonts. Overall, under-pressed and a bit disappointed considering the price.

I am visually impaired and have been trying to find a cell phone I could read and text from. There are NONE! My family has a plan with AT&T but nothing they had was conducive to my needs. The jitterbug is fine but is not the best. It seems geared to older not saavy adults. It does not display conversations, address book is not alphabetical. Sometimes I do not get texts and w/o conversation it is hard to follow.

Monthly costs are misleading as the initial prices do NOT include any voicemail. There is an ala cart charge for even the most basic functionality. The phone interface is based on question and answers-YES or NO. Not as easy as just having the phone numbers on the first screen. Otherwise-physically it works well. Font size and Volume are great for sight and hearing impaired.

I bought this phone for my brother. The phone sound quality seems a little staticky. It's not easy to add new names; the phone doesn't capture the number from a call. You have to manually type in each one. It's easy to add contacts from your computer but this is a problem if you don't have a computer which is the situation with my brother so I'm adding the new numbers for him.

It took an hour to set up the phone service. After that I made a call to test it out and the ear piece didn't work. I spent another hour on the phone with the tech department and they deemed it faulty. Took it back to best buy for exchange but they did not have a replacement. Bought from another store and great call registered very quickly 2nd time. Been a month, still works, hope it continues to work for my mom.

This is the Jitterbug flip phone used by GreatCall.com. Pros: large buttons, easy to see, good for large hands. Nice and loud for the hard of hearing. You can enter your contacts online, using a full pc keyboard! Much easier. Cons: You have to scroll through contacts; you can't search for one, or put in a first letter to limit search. You can have the phone ring OR vibrate, but not both.

Got this phone for my mother-in-law who is 92 years old. The concept is good but you have to have the phone in exactly the right way in the charger or it will not charge. 5 different people tried to put it in the cradle correctly and it took every one a couple of tries to get it charging . She just plugs the cord directly into the phone to charge it now instead of using the cradle.

Or maybe just get the touch phone. My mom is 86 and has very poor vision. But has been able to use both phone formats. This one had the main screen crack beyond use. The smart format seems to hold up better. So I would recommend it over the flip. She protested but seems to be able to see the touch screen better too.
