Mower cuts great, but battery life is a concern
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Summary - Mower cutting/mulching performance and features are 5 stars. - Battery performance is only 3 stars (would be less with a yard greater than 0.28 acres based on my experience so far). I'd be interested to know under what conditions the battery could mow up to 1/2 acre as advertised. - Purchasing the mower online from Best Buy is 5 stars. Details Purchased in April 2024. I have a 12,000 sq ft property (0.28 acres – 80’ by 150’) with a house and 2-car garage/driveway so the actual mowing area is less than 12,000 sq ft. My lawn slopes slightly in the back. In the review below, Battery 1 is the 4 Ah battery that came with the mower. Battery 2 is a second 4 Ah battery that I purchased as a precaution so that I would not have to worry about recharging a battery to completely mow my lawn. I use self-propel quite a bit and set it just past halfway. My lawn is thick and grows rapidly in the spring, which is why I went with an 80 V mower. First mowing (April 6) - I charged Battery 1 and it went from 2 bars (factory charge) to fully charged in 35 minutes. I only had to mow the backyard which took 25 minutes and two bars remained on the battery when finished. It took 30 minutes to completely recharge the battery. Second mowing (April 14) - I charged Battery 2 and it went from 2 bars (factory charge) to fully charged in 35 minutes. The entire yard took 55 minutes and the battery died while self-propelling back to the garage. I was pleased that I only needed one battery. I did not measure how long it took to recharge the battery. Third mowing (April 21) - Battery 1 died after 30 minutes (barely finished the front yard and small side yards, although I had to make a few short second passes to chop up rows of clippings that were left behind). I used Battery 2 to mow the backyard and raised the deck from position 6 to position 7 to minimize the load and it had 1 bar remaining when finished. I was concerned that Battery 2 would die before finishing, but the mower made it back to the garage using self-propel. Fourth mowing (April 27) - I set the deck height to 6 for the entire yard. Battery 1 finished the front and small side yards and part of the backyard before I shut it off to switch batteries because it was down to 1 bar. I finished the backyard with Battery 2 and no bars remained when it got back to the garage. No second passes were needed. Battery 1 took 40 minutes to recharge and Battery 2 took 44 minutes to recharge. The grass was dry each time I mowed, although the blades of grass are moisture-filled based on the damp clippings under the deck. Mulching performance is excellent, and even with tall grass only occasional clippings are left in a row (I believe on the right side of the mower but will check next time). The mower does not bog down, which is impressive given the growth rate/density of the lawn this time of year! I have not used the Turbo button and just let the mower auto-sense when it needs to increase the blade speed. The fold-up storage makes cleaning the deck’s underside very easy. My last mower had a cast aluminum deck so I am doing everything I can to take care of the steel deck on this mower and prevent grass build-up. After each mowing, I wipe the underside of the deck with a damp sponge followed by using Meguiar’s Ultimate Waterless Wash and Wax to keep the underside like new (please don’t judge). The box says that the mower cuts up to 1/2 acre using one battery with a run-time of 45 minutes and a recharge time of 60 minutes. I suppose during a hot summer when the grass gets dry, it may be possible to cut up to 1/2 acre on one charge but cutting 1/2 acre in 45 minutes seems overly optimistic. I thought that having two 4 Ah batteries would give me sufficient margin for my 0.28 acre property, but the last two mowings are giving me “range anxiety”. I even disengage the self-propel at times to minimize battery use. The manual also does not state at what charge level the battery should be stored, but according to a Q&A answer from Greenworks, batteries should be stored fully charged so that is what I am doing. However, I may try charging the batteries the day that I intend to mow the lawn to see if they last longer. Any tips to maximize battery performance and get the most years of use from the batteries are appreciated. Charging the batteries emits a strong, unpleasant odor (likely from the charger) so I may try charging outdoors. I wish the charger’s fan would shut off after the battery is fully charged (green light stays solid) and I wish the charger had a button to disengage the battery. Inserting the battery into the mower’s battery compartment requires a good shove to hear the click and the battery release button to disengage the battery is a little awkward to use. Battery insertion/removal should be improved, especially since the hatch lid must be held in the open position using your other hand. I’m very satisfied with the mower’s mulching/cutting performance and light weight. I have not used the grass bag or side discharge. However, after the second mowing I am disappointed with the battery performance. Spring is the most challenging time of year to mow my lawn, but I really don’t want to: a) mow more than once per week b) charge a battery that is still warm from use (my understanding is that charging a warm battery is not good for it), or c) purchase a third battery to avoid charging a warm battery. I do not fertilize my lawn in the spring to keep mowing manageable until the weather warms up and the growth slows down. Hopefully, when the grass grows more slowly, I'll be able to mow my entire 0.28 acre yard with plenty of battery life to spare. Time will tell...

Powerful
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This mower is powerful. The self propelled is amazing. You just guide it, mower does all the work. The battery keeps a charge. I haven't had it die out on me yet. Im so happy with this mower. It also folds up. Doesn't take up much space.

My neighbors want it now
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was the last guy in the block that went from hiring someone to saying “ugh, I’m a do it myself” and honestly I’m super happy with my choice of machine. This is not my first one of these, or even from this brand. However, it is my first time using a SELF PROPELLED one and it is a game changer. While everyone in the block is hurting their backs pushing their mowers, here I am chilling, letting the machine do all the work by itself. Here are a few things I love about it: - you are able to control how fast the machine self propels. - Easy controllers - Powerfull. Cuts through everything like nothing, specially in Turbo mode. - Turbo mode - the charger has a fan to keep the battery cool.

Great light-weight mower!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.FABULOUS little mower. Picked one up from Best Buy this morning and found I didn't really need the assembly instructions... fairly obvious and simple to assemble. Add two bolts to the handle, click a few things in place, charge the battery (fast!), and go mow. (Yes, I did read the Operators Instructions - also pretty simple). It replaces a 25 year old gas, self propelled Toro of about the same size (but the Toro is much heavier). Mowing is easy, but pay attention to comments about releasing the self-propelled 'go lever' a bit earlier than you need to stop (like coming up to a porch). I had no problems with the rear wheel drive in turns, and found I could 'pump' the 'go lever' to mow around trees effectively. Blade suction is slightly less than the Toro, it seems, so many of the winter leaves that settled into the lawn were not picked up, but I had the deck elevation set at 5 out of 7 since this is the first Spring mow. I will probably use no more than 4 in the future, which should pick up ground debris better. I mowed our front and side yards (about 12 minutes) and still had 80% battery life left (when the fourth charging light is on for a few seconds and the general charge light stays on until 100% is reached). Smart design, well built, packaging was substantial but simple. If I have a gripe, it's that the instruction booklets are printed so small I chose to use a magnifying lens to make it easier for my 20/20 corrected eyes to read clearly.

My advice is anybody that are going to buy this product. Will need to buy either a higher battery capacity or buy two batteries.

Excellent mower
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This mower has worked very well. I like its simplicity. The metal deck makes it feel substantial. Starting is good. The self propel would be better if it could stop more quickly when released. I only use self propel sporadically because my lawn is mostly flat and simple. I bought a spare battery, but without bagging or self propel use, I can easily finish my lawn on one charge (~ 1 hour). I love that it folds vertically for storage. Charger fan is loud, but the battery charges pretty quickly.

Not as good as expected
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Operation is less than expected. With a battery of this size and wattage I expected more cutting time. If you use the self drive your battery is done in less than 9 minutes. And trying to register the product online is a nightmare.

Almost perfect but still a 5 star experience!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Positives: Low maintenance: The mower is very low maintenance. There is no need to change the oil or spark plugs, and the battery is easily removable and rechargeable. Plus the battery charges super quick. I'd say 0 to usable in about 30 minutes Easy to start: It's very easy to start. Simply plug in the battery and grab the green lever and push start! Done! You're off the the races, no need to pull a cord. Does a great job mowing: I was shocked. It does a great job mowing. It cuts the grass evenly and leaves a nice, clean cut. I was blown away. Mainly because I thought electrics weren't good, but it is. I don't know why I feared the battery so much. Lasts long enough to mow front and back: My biggest concern was battery life. To my pleasant surprise it had a very long battery life. It can easily mow a front and back yard on a single charge. My yard is big IMO, but not huge. I wouldn't consider it a medium to small, but not enormous. Quiet: Compared to my old gas mower, this is very quiet. I didn't feel worried I'd wake my neighbors at 8 AM when I mowed on one day. I think this is a great option for those who want to avoid noise pollution. Pleasant to use: Last thing I liked was it was just a nice mowing experience. It is lightweight and easy to maneuver, making it easy to get around your yard without the self propelled feature. And nice to have when I needed it like by the fence. It's just a good device that I enjoyed using. Negatives: Small bag: The bag on this thing is way too small if you ask me! If you have a large lawn, you may need to empty the bag frequently especially if you skipped a week or it got a little longer than normal. Thin blade: The blade is thin. It may not be as durable as a thicker blade from a gas powered mower. I am just guessing here, but it may not be able to handle large objects like branches or rocks for long. I'd be willing to bet a gas mower will require less blade maintenance than this, but it's just a guess. The blade may be perfectly fine. Delay before wheels kick in: There is a slight delay before the self-propelled motors kick in. This can be jarring if you are pushing the mower up a hill or against a fence. Overall, the Greenworks mower is a great option for homeowners who are looking for a low-maintenance, quiet, and easy-to-use mower. It is perfect for small to medium-sized yards and I'm willing to say it's great for larger yards too. Additional notes: I compared it with my neighbors older 21" Greenworks Mower and there appears to be a lot of overlap. For example the batteries are the same physical size. I was able to power mine with his stage 3 battery and he was able to power his with the new stage 4 battery. The bags and the mulcher side shot was the same part, but the piece the blocks the bag was different from his and mine. The blades between the two looked identical and same with the housing for the blades. I think this is a good upgrade and if I owned his, I'd still upgrade for sure. There's a lot of creature comfort improvements that is worth the expense.

Good power for tall/thick grass!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my 3rd electric mower I've used over the last 15 years, but my first from Greenworks. It was, by far, the most powerful of the three and I was very pleased overall. I don't ever plan to go back to gas mowers as electric mowers require almost no maintenance and still do a great job. You don't have to worry about having a gas tank around, there's no oil to check/change, you don't have to yank/pull start the engine, etc. Pros: - All of the features you would want in a mower are present with an optional side chute, mulch plug, and rear bag. I always mulch where I live in Texas and this feature worked great for me with clippings being hardly visible when I was done. Before and after pictures of my latest mowing are attached. - The self-propelling feature comes in very handy since this mower is fairly heavy. There are a lot of twists and turns in my yard so getting a break on the straightaways was appreciated. It will take you about one mowing job to get comfortable with the controls. There is a learning curve with engaging/disengaging the self-propelling, but it is intuitive once you get used to it. - Battery life was very good and I love how fast it charges. I've found that the power from this lithium ion battery helps me cut taller grass and weeds than my last mower with a lead acid battery. My yard is average in size for a subdivision home at around a 1/4 acre. I can do the whole yard in one charge if I don't use the self-propel feature. The battery will drain much faster if you do. My ongoing plan is to mow my front yard, plug the battery in to top off the charge while I edge the front yard, then finish off the back yard with plenty of power to spare. The battery can charge in ~30 minutes so I don't see a need to buy a second battery. - Greenworks has an assortment of other lawn care devices that use the same battery so it can be multi-purpose. When I need to replace my current hedge-trimmers and edger I will likely go with Greenworks. Cons: - This mower is heavy compared to others I have used due to the sturdy metal frame. But that does help with durability. - The power plug on the charger arrived bent (see picture). This could be a quality control issue with how the mower is packaged as the battery and charger weren't very secure in the box and could have shuffled around during shipping. Luckily, I was able to bend it back with no damage and it worked fine. The box the mower arrived in had mild to moderate damage so I would suggest picking up in store if you have that option. The is the best electric mower I have used to date and highly recommend it!

Going green and liking it
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been fighting with my old ... "red" gasoline mower for the last two seasons. I've tried cleaning it, sharpening the blade, its self propelled mode just isn't what I recall it to be. I used to finish my yard 45m then clean up, being done in about an hour. More recently it's been taking more like 90m. My wife suggested I start earlier so I can be ready in 2h (grrr). She also pointed out that our neighbor has a corded electric and loves it. I pointed out that we have islands of bushes and gardens that they don't so for me having a cord seemed like such a hassle. She also pointed out that we have solar, so an electric mower would essentially be free (once paid for). Well I ventured off to my local home improvement store. And talked to a sales person, they essentially recommended one of two brands, but for battery life they thought I'd be most happy with Greenworks lawn mower. Too bad they didn't have any in stock, and it would take 2-3 weeks to get one delivered. Out came my phone and I found that my local BB not only carried them, they had them in stock. I'd made up my mind, so I promptly went home to consult with my wife. My first impression is they thought of just about everything, this mower can easily be converted from mulching, to side output to rear bagging. Second, what a big battery it has (see image next to a 6 pack of coke). But it also has a head light; I've always thought mowing as the sun is setting would be convenient. And except for riding mowers, push gasoline mowers just never seemed to have them (I know my "red" one didn't). And this greenworks Pro, makes it easy to adjust the wheels for cut height, easy to change the angle of the push arms, and easy to control the speed (more on that shortly). I'm guessing it's 40-50% lighter than my old "red" mower. The battery took about an hour to fully charge (charger has a fan which whirls while charging), when the whirling stops the battery is charged. Now what surprised me the most, my old red self propelled mower has one speed (not fast enough). This Greenworks pro offers multiple settings from "tortoise" mode (the slowest) to "jack rabbit" mode. In the fastest mode the mower will give you a bit of a workout. You're not exactly jogging, but more like speed walking, but if your hands fall off the speed controls you catch up immediately. So wanting a challenge I tried using it at full speed all the time; on straight sections, no problems, but when taking corners, full speed is just not possible (for me). Once you turn it on, the controls are pretty intuitive. You have to hold the start button down for a couple of seconds to get it to start, when starting the speed controls are disengaged (a smart safety procedure). In the battery compartment there is a plastic "key" that prevents use when the key is not in place. If you have kids that might "play" with... things, best to take this with you when you finish. Because this mower is so much lighter than my old mower, it kind of feels like it's pulling me along (especially up a slope). Once you get a feel for things it is quite comfortable to use. The back clippings bag is very easy to get on and off, I'd suggest not over filling. One thing to note is the handle on the bag is black. I first used it on a day that was about 100 out (in AZ, it's pretty normal), and the handle got pretty hot from the sun (more reason to mow at dusk). Well I finished in 35 minutes, next time I can probably get done in 30 (less learning to do). The battery indicator was only down to 50%. I didn't find out exactly how long they would last, but their 1 hour estimate seems about right. I did have to catch my breath a couple of times (but exercise is good, right?) The mower folds up very easily (the two green plastic cutouts on the arms, disengage the handle so it's easy to fold up. I'm so glad it has a full 21" cut path, some of the corded mowers are only 14" wide. This mower is very powerful for being battery powered, a good combination. I love the power of its self propulsion. I have nothing but praise for this current generation lawn mower; I wish I'd not delayed the purchase, on the other hand I'm glad to have this new 80 volt version.

Almost perfect (Lengthy review)
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This mower is really amazing. The first thing I did when I put it together was go to the highest grass area, which was above my ankles. There were a couple of very dense areas which would have choked my old gas mower out. Instead, I could hear the engine rev into turbo mode and it made short work out of it without choking even once. I didn't bag it because I wanted to see how well it mulched that tall grass and I was not disappointed. It was very well mulched. I had to do my yard (1/2 acre) in sections for the first mow and the battery did the first half on one charge and the second half on one charge. Once I got the grass under control, between my 2 amp and my 4 amp batteries I can get the whole yard done with battery to spare. The self propel is amazing. I have a steep hill that is always like doing push ups with my gas mower. Whatever part of the hill I can walk, the mower can too. It takes a little getting used to getting the speed where it is a comfortable walk without jogging, hah! Also, if you take it out of self propel, you need to push it a couple of inches forward and that disengages it. Then it walks like a regular mower. I thought it was getting stuck when I pulled it back until I learned that neat little step. My only issue with it is that the nuts and bolts that secure the handle on have come off after 4 uses. I did not realize it until 2 days ago. I am handy with tools and I did secure them tightly. I do not have either of them, so I called Greenworks and unfortunately they are out of stock with no ETA of when they will be back in stock. It will be a pain in the rear to go to a hardware store and try to figure out exactly what size they are. I am a Totaltech member, and I would hate to have to bring this whole unit back because the nuts and bolts malfunctioned. We are getting into warm weather now, so I cannot wait weeks for the parts to come in. If I had been able to easily replace them I would have given this mower an easy 5 star rating. It is a total beast in the yard, I can't say enough about the power and ease there is using this mower. It exceeded my expectations, I just need 2 nuts and 2 bolts to get back into my mowing routine.
