They are designed to lock when pulled back to prevent damage to the drive belt. To pull the mower back, disengage the self-propelled lever.

High hope, but disappointed.

The battery was defective. After getting the mower, I started charging the battery. Just a few minutes later it stopped charging. First, I thought it might be heat, I waited 45 minutes and started charging the battery again. In a few seconds, I saw the Red Blinking light again. The Manuel says (in case of Red Blinking light): Battery defective, use a new one! In the process of replacing, will update when it arrives.

Quite a risky try!

Though I have been using it for over 6 months now, initial feeling was good! Battery life is ok! Customer service is worst, almost non existent! Buy at your own risk! If it works on well, then fine, else good luck!

Watch for tree ruts

Seems that could bend the drive shift. When I called a local repair shop he said he had several of them waiting on parts. Thank goodness I just sent the 2nd battery back just purchased (30 day return policy from ship date back to greenworks). When it ran it was just ok, the battery did not last long. Would offer one buys a gas mower instead with a long warranty. Say with a metal deck. Got it on sale but that was money down the drain. Will cost around $150 to get repaired, lord only knows if greenworks will have a drive shaft in stock. Figure I cannot be the only one that is would happen to.

Don’t Cut the grass

Posted .Hello Pudding - Sorry to hear of the experience you have had. Please refer to your owner's manual. First, familiarize yourself with the two levers on the front. One is the start lever and one is the self -propelled lever. Once you determine which lever is the self-propelled lever you can then focus on starting the unit.
This unit has a safety start up feature and will only start up in the following order. Insert key (if applicable) and battery. Then hold down the safety button, while the safety button is being held down, use your other hand to pull up the start lever (bail switch). If the mower moves forward you have selected the wrong lever. If the right lever has been selected you can hear the unit turn on but not move forward. Once the unit is on you can then release the safety button and continue to hold onto the bail handle (start lever).
Now that the unit is on you can pull up the self-propelled lever with your other hand and hold both levers down as you use the unit. You can release the self-propelled lever at any time and activate it again by simply pulling it up. However, if you release the bail lever (start switch), you must remember the above process. Safety button first, then bail lever.

Always, push and hold the safety button first, as the safety button is being held down use your other hand to lift the bale handle. It was able to mow our entire yard with half power remaining! It did an amazing job with cutting the grass and the self propeller took a few minutes to get the hang of, but is a game changer. Note: I am an employee
