Does not work with the IPad screen protector

So you bought the Crayola ColorStudio, got it home, downloaded the free app, unlocked the app using the ColorStudio Pen, and low and behold the pen doesn't seem to work? Does your toddler really have to mash down on the pen this hard to color the pages? Why does the pen seem to work intermittently? Did you buy a defective product? The answer is no. But it sounds as though you have a protective plastic shield on your IPad to prevent your toddler from scratching the surface. Because we all know how gentle our little ones can be with electronics. The Crayola ColorStudio Stylus pen has a 3 second delay before the colors start to appear on the page. Plus, the stylus pen does not have the sensitivity to make contact with the IPad through the protective plastic cover. So now what? You just spent $30 plus tax on a toy that won't work on your IPad? There is no way you're going to remove the plastic shield and risk your precious little one from scratching your several hundred dollar electronic. The answer is yes, take it back to the store BUT don't return it...exchange it. Pick up the Bamboo Stylus pen instead. The Bamboo Stylus pen is thick enough for your toddler to grip, does not have a real built in pen (which could be a disaster for your walls), and has a rounded rubber tip to prevent the IPad from getting scratched. This pen has an instant reaction time for coloring on the pages of the Crayola ColorStudio app and is not affected by your plastic cover. The Bamboo Stylus pen is the same price as the Crayola ColorStudio stylus, so it will be an even swap. See, not such a waste of time and money after all for your toddler to have hours of fun coloring on the Crayola app.

5 star idea; 3 star execution

I'll be honest. I'm not a kid, and I don't have kids. I'm not an artist. But I am a geek and I've always loved to color. I bought the Crayola Color Studio HD pen because I wanted to understand how it worked and wanted to see if it would be fun to color as an adult. The idea is great. The pen is battery powered and emits a fun color changing LED to show that it is on. It also emits a soft ticking sound when it's on but the color LED is just fun. The pen is a bit fat but probably great for little hands. When the pen is on, you can color, but when the pen is off, you can't. So what's the advantage? Well, if you touch the screen with your palm or finger, then it won't color, which turns out to be a great feature for the iPad's big surface where you are likely to be touching the screen a lot by accident, even if you are an adult. So what about the app? Well, here's where it falls apart a bit for me. The app has so much potential. The layout is good and most of the pictures are fun. You get some good musical sounds and even animation. But then there are the bugs! Most of them are around the animations. You color something and then when you color an animation near the other object, the colors bleed across. Just little things like that which are a bit frustrating. And the thing is - the app is just software and it can be fixed. So Griffin, you are almost there but I've had the app for a few months now and no bug fixes. What's up with that?

    Difficult to use, very frustrating

When I saw this in the Sunday ad I was so excited. Finally something other than Plants vs. Zombies for my daughter to play with on my iPad. that excitement quickly turned to frustration once I gave the pen over to my daughter. The tip is similair to other iPad stylus tips except it is very rigid, making it nearly impossible for a small child to use. For the iPad to sense the contact of the pen, you have to press so firmly onto the screen or hold it at a perfect 90 degree angle and still press harder than most small children will be able to maintain for more than few seconds. My daughter wants to use it but gets so upset because the app cannot connect with the pen consistently she always ends up frustrated and banging the pen on the iPad. For the safety of my iPad and the security of my wallet I will be returning this. Good idea Griffin, poor execution.

I was very excited to have my 3 year old daughter give this product a go after I got it on a very good pre-Christmas deal from BB. The product shows just so much promise and seems like it would be a great product but sadly, it is just not practical for younger kids. The marker requires such strong down-pressure on the screen that even I have a hard time making it work well at all. If there were some way to adjust the sensitivity settings for the marker interface in the program it would be good. Additionally, there is some noticeable lag when loading coloring tiles and moving through the program, this could be due to my usage on an original iPad, perhaps the iPad 2 provides better in app performance, but I doubt the marker interface works better from one model to the next. For everyone out there thinking this is going to be great, don't bother if and until crayola releases an update to correct the marker interface. I suggest downloading adobe ideas for free and letting your little one finger paint away on that instead, it works really great.

I initially was sold on the concept after reading some reviews. Thought this sounds like a great product for my two year old. Once she started coloring with it she put it down and started using her finger. She could not get used to having to really push down on the iPad to color. Not sure how this marker or stylus is supposed to be better then just using your finger but I can tell you my daughter was not impressed. However I did like the options it opens up. All the colors are nice and it's a really nice app but the marker was a let down. I returned it for a refund at best buy. Just an FYI the features that the marker unlock are still active even after I returned the marker I guess it just works as a key initially and once you've unlock the extra features you don't need to ever do it again. At least up until know. Hope this helps.

I bought this thinking that my Goddaughter would enjoy the painting and drawing and would enjoy the drawing within the lines helper. I find the pen that comes with the product way too hard for young users to use and when I try it, it is too hard and clumbsy for me too. The power button is right where you grab the pen and is constantly going off and the sensor is horrible and rarely pics up. I activated the product with the pen, but use an iPad stylus wth it almost all the time. The pen thing seems to be useless. It also seems like the content is limited. I would think they would be adding new content all the time, but that does not appear to be the case. I feel like I spent too much even purchasiong this on sale. I would not recomment it to anyone.

The first one i bought it was broken when open. No big deal and took it back. The second one worked fine. I played with it and everything worked great. Then I passed it on to my 3, almost 4 yr old, and he got frustrated quick with the big crayola pen. After a while we had to put everything up and decided to return it. I think personally for what you get, it is too expensive. There is really nothing special about the big crayola pen except it has fancy colors flashing when it is on. When the pen was off, you could still color. At one point I was using my stylus to color.

Fun game, better with fingers or regular stylus.

I was convinced we were doing something wrong until I read the reviews on this product! It's such a fun, neat idea for little ones, but the stylus is definitely a joke if you have any kind of heavy duty protector on your screen like I do (Zagg Invisible Shield). I can't speak for ease of use without it, but I'm really disappointed overall. It just so happened that I purchased a regular stylus for my iPhone and iPad the same day -- it works a thousand times better than the Crayola stylus! My advice? Return the game and buy a plain old stylus compatible with the Apple platform #less than half the price). The Crayola Studio HD app is free, so you can still use it. This is what I'll be doing very soon!

    Good idea, bad product

This crayola studio pen thing is a great idea and is especially appealing to those who like to draw or do anything art related. It is also a great idea for kids, however the pen is not very good. You have to apply way too much force to the iPad screen and it does't fill in the colors too well. Overall I was initially excited at the idea of this product, but was greatly disappointed at how bad it operates. It is not worth the money, maybe if it cost like 5 or 10 dollars I could see splurging on it, but for 30 dollars, it is definitely a waste of good money.

We should have read reviews before purchasing this. As most others state, takes way too pressure to make the pen work as you would expect. My 5 year old became very frustrated as I did after trying to show her how to use it. However, the app works fine when using the fingertip mode. Beats having to carry a couple coloring books and a box of crayons when you want to keep them busy. If they would design the pen to actually work with how much pressure a kid uses in the real world, it would be a 5 star. It's really only a 2 star product at best.

    Did not recognize input.

I have a ZAGG protective screen on my iPad and the pen would not work. Nowhere on the box did it mention having trouble working through screen protectors. I went to the site to troubleshoot and there it mentions "iMarker, the digital stylus included with ColorStudio HD, works best when it has direct contact with your iPad's screen." This is a product aimed at kids so I'm assuming a pretty decent percent of the target market has a screen protector on their iPad. Well, I later removed the screen protector and it still had trouble recognizing input. So now I'm down one screen protector and I still had a non-functional pen.

Don't waste your money! I bought the color studio for my daughter to use with our Ipad. She was so excited to have a pen to use for coloring instead of her finger. The idea behind this is great, but the product just sucks. You had to press the pen down so hard before the ipad realized it was working that I worried the screen would eventually break. When you did get it to work it didn't do a very good job following the marks you made. In my opinion you're better off using your finger. Thankfully Best Buy didn't give me any hassle when I returned it.

    Pen doesn't work well

I found the app ok, but the big crayola 'pen' worked poorly. took too much pressure to work (which was hard for my 4 year old) and led to much frustration (which was the opposite of what I wanted!). definitely worked better in finger mode, but the biggest issue is that the touch type of screens that tablets are using aren't really designed for the kind of detailed coloring and drawing you'd want to do with these devices.

I am giving this one star as we just bought this today and I myself used it and it is very hard to use. You have to hold the pen strainght up and down in order for it to work and even then it will not color. I am thinking of returning to the store as I think my 5 year old will loose interest in it fast. Had I know it would have been like this I would not have wated our mone on it.

One of the most disappointing purcushes made this holdays season. Thought we would be save because I have all Griffin products but I must say that this one is a FAIL! After 20 mins of jut trying to get the battery in and set I then had to fight it with my iPad. I ended up having to uplocked the app using my finger and then press down with bothh my hands on the marker to get it to work. I can tell you my kids were NOT going to be doing that with my iPad! They got packaged upi and returned the next morning.

The solution is really neat. The graphics and concept really sit well with young children. However, the execution of the pen is less than useful. It takes quite a bit of pressure for the pen to register on the screen. For a child, it's challenging to make this work. At this point, the pen is collecting dust and the app is unused. It's too bad you couldn't just use your finger or regular stylus to make the app work.

I purchased this stylus for my 4 year old daughter for Christmas. Once I got batteries in it and got it connected to the iPad, the thing wouldn't even color. We have a Zagg Shield on our iPad for protection from whatever she can do to harm it. The stylus never had a chance. You had to press really hard on the screen. I had to press so hard for it to work that the screen changed colors. I took it back the next day!

My daughter just had to have this when I bought the IPad. Everyone in the store told me how fabulous it was they had just done a demonstration on it the kids all had a blast. The pen is not easy to use you have to have it straight up and down for it to work. To color some of the smaller items on the screen you end up out of the line no matter what you do. The tip of the pen is quit large and makes the fine details difficult.

I rushed out and picked this up at the weekend. What a disappointment. The pen whirrs constantly. You have to press really hard on the iPad screen to get it to register which is a worry especially if there is any dust on the screen. The software looks nice but it's not responsive and you get lots of breaks in the line when you are drawing. Very very poor. I'm returning it today.

I agree with all the other bad reviews! This was a Christmas gift for my 6 year old. Very disappointing. The pen just does not work well at all. I tried the product before I showed by daughter but I had to press down so hard to get it to color that my hand was all red. The concept is great and if the pen and program worked it would be excellent. Everyone who bought this should go get a refund and if you haven't bought it - DONT!
