Disney's first UHD offering sets the bar impressiv

Well, the wait is finally over. Disney has finally hopped on the 4K/UHD bandwagon and naturally they have set the bar so ridiculously high that all other studios have been put on notice. It was practically written in the stars, what with James Gunn shooting the movie in 8K, creating one of the best IMAX 3D experiences of my life. I had impossibly high hopes for this home release and Disney didn’t disappoint. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is Disney’s first UHD Blu-ray and it is gorgeous. They really couldn’t have picked a better film, not only because of the 8K source material but also James Gunn’s dynamic color choices where every scene in the film is designed around a specific color pallet. The HDR brings the colors to incredible life while preserving a realistic, yet intense level of contrast and shading for the darker scenes so nothing is lost in the shadow. The level of detail is off the charts. You can trace the intricate lines on Drax’s skin or study the pores on Yondu’s face or marvel at the detail on Nebula’s implants, or if you’re up to the challenge, try counting the hairs on Rocket’s fur…you can. The included 3D copy, while technically no match for the UHD disc, will blow your mind with the smoothest and most immersive 3D and NO headaches or eye strain! 4K owners will also get the added immersion of a Dolby Atmos mix, while the BD version tops out with a DTS-HD MA 7.1 mix. I’m not sure why they couldn’t have stuck the Atmos mix on the BD as well, because the object-oriented sound design is so much more immersive. There were some scenes where sounds were coming from all directions including the ceiling, creating a truly engaging experience normally reserved for the fancy theater. If you have an Atmos setup this is going to showcase it in style. The mix is equally as perfect with prioritized dialogue and sound effects balanced with the movie’s epic soundtrack that seamlessly blends score and licensed 80’s tunes to not only create the perfect emotional mood, but in many ways actually tell parts of the story through lyrics and tonality. James Gunn is one of the few directors who recognize that music is an integral part of movie-making, and Vol 2 takes it to the next level. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does a fantastic job of picking up where the first film left off, yet remains approachable for those who may have missed their debut. There are definitely some rewarding insider moments for those who have seen the original and even played the spin-off adventure game from Telltale. The action and set pieces are bigger than ever yet the focus remains remarkably tight and the emphasis on family is front and center to every element of the story. And you can experience it all on one of the best 4K/UHD releases of the year, and a movie no 4K home theater enthusiast should miss. It truly is out of this world.

    They did it right

One of my biggest complaints as of late with buying a high end movie has been the lack of including all the options. Yes, we’re still buying discs because we want the high quality experience without the possibility of lag while streaming, or we really want the 3D or 4k content. For Disney’s first release in the 4k world, they did it right (almost). This is the way it should be done (pay attention other publishers). It includes everything you would want disc wise. The 4k version which plays in very crisp clear high resolution detail. The 3D version which is still superb and fun to watch, as well as the lower (now) standard quality Blu Ray which you can take with you when you go on vacation. No, we really don’t need the DVD format anymore. I’m sorry I failed to mention the Digital Copy, which is only in HDX (even though you just paid for the 4k UHD version). For some reason Disney hasn’t caught up with this like Warner Bros. and Universal have, but they did later with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Still for their first outing into 4k they did a pretty good job. And who doesn’t want to see Star Lord in 3D kicking some alien tail? As far as the movie goes, it’s great, not as good as the original, but still very fun to watch and re-watch. You will enjoy this movie. You really don’t need me to explain like everyone else what they thought about it. If you’re looking at the 4k edition, you already know. And the steel case is just fun. I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for them. And if Disney / Marvel keeps putting out this quality of releases with everything included, I will keep buying them.

First let me say that I've loved all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to some degree or another, but the Guardians of the Galaxy movie(s) were a sleeper hit with me and my family. I wasn't overly familiar with the characters and the line-up wasn't "my" Guardians of the Galaxy so I wasn't expecting to love it. But love it I did. All the characters are great, though Starlord, Groot, and Rocket steal the show for me. In the sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a lot more of the same that I enjoyed in GotG 1: -One of the best soundtracks in a movie I've heard in a while...listen to them both all the time. -Lots of great 80's nostalgia playing to my childhood...just as much in the new movie. -Great humor, wrapped in great character development, and loner/family/team drama. And for the sequel, I could call attention to so many things I love about the movie, but I'll leave it at having one of the greatest opening credits sequences that I can remember. I loved Starlord's dance through the ruins in the first GotG, but Baby Groot's dancing around to ELO's Mr. Blue Sky was better...especially with everything happening in the background. Oh...and the end credits were engaging throughout. Not something you see very often.

While Vol. 2 could easily have gone the route of most sequels (being a louder, bigger version of the initial film), it was nice to see that they went for more personal/emotional storylines. Most of the film is about Quill finding his dad but it also takes time to examine the reasons behind Rocket's behavior towards those around him, Nebula/Gamora's love/hate sisterly relationship, Drax/Mantis learning to express true emotion and Yondu trying to atone for all the mistakes he's made in his life. These storylines don't mean that the film is without any excitement as there are still plenty of fun, crazy action scenes that still let you know this is a GOTG/MCU film. Kurt Russell is great as Ego, who starts off as a benevolent and loving father looking for his son before unleashing his cruel machinations. It was great to see the cameos from Stallone, Rhames, and Yeoh as leaders of other Ravager factions. As per usual, GOTG Vol. 2 has a great soundtrack that really helps set the mood for all the action and emotional scenes.

I like this movie more than the first one. Now that the characters are a team they get to interact each other right from the first scene. You can infer how their relationship as a team has grown based on the dialogue and action. Each character is still his/her own individual humorous egotistic misfit that should not be getting along with the rest of the personalities of the ship but somehow they still work as a team. That Gondu story line was not expected at all. It was really heartfelt when the ships showed up at the end to shoot fireworks. It's not just a dumb fun movie. The color is rich and beautiful. The humor is more fluid. I'm so glad Disney brought back James Gun for this franchise. He made the guardians his own and they can not continue these characters without him.

Beyond excited to see this as Disney's first ever 4K release and will look beautiful! The steelbook case looks great and have already pre-ordered it for sure! Now onto the actual movie, definitely a great movie and while I feel it didn't quite live up to the original, it had great elements in it and some good old Marvel humor! The opening scene was perfect with Groot and good to see them continually exploring the Marvel universe by meeting new characters and a big player in one of the end credit scenes that they speak about! Honestly, just a great movie for everyone and can not wait for Infinity War! Buy this folks!!

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 succeeds in pretty much every way it conceivably could have. The first installment was terrific, being both fun and exciting to an extent most movies aren't, and this new movie manages to be even better in every sense. Questions raised during the previous movie are addressed, new characters are added into the mix while the already established characters are explored and given additional depth, and all of it is wrapped up in a fascinating story that is captivating and dramatic without taking itself too seriously. Ignoring noise being carried in the medium of space, especially during what amounts to a fireworks display near the end, is really the biggest problem I have with this movie...and it's not like that is a piece of poor filmmaking exclusive to this movie. I'm glad that James Gunn is on board to helm Volume 3, because he has handled this franchise precisely the way it should be treated.

Having been beyond thrilled with the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie this sequel has been my most anticipated film in the years since. The fun and creative characters from the comics are here for a second go 'round and while the action is plenty, there is a tremendous message of learning who your family is and realizing the value of those most important to you. Visually, this might be the most colorful and vivid film I've ever seen, and the 3d version adds depth that is well worth seeing. Few movies seem to be truly filmed with 3d in mind yet this one does it right in every way. James Gunn has a way of making you like and understand the characters in a way that even if you don't care about what they are about, you still get a good sense of why they do what they do, with plenty of humor to balance the emotions and action. The Steelbook 4k/3d combo version is what I purchased and it's great all around. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Hopefully you don't purchase 4k steelbook editions for movies you haven't seen yet, but on the off chance you're a gambler like that then here's a mini-review: This movie is good. There's a lot of funny parts, but it does run a little long and it's not quite as good as the first one. The picture is AMAZING in 4k. Why there's a 3d version in here is beyond me as I believe 3d is mostly phased out with 4k, but maybe I'm wrong. Anyway the quality is good, the extras are decent (the gag reel in particular is very funny), and the case itself is gorgeous. I like the Marvel cases in general, although it annoys me that this one is a "glossy" case where most of the rest have been more of a "matte" finish, but that's really nit-picky. The cover is correct in having baby-groot, who is the best part of the movie. If you collect steelbooks this will make a fine addition to your collection.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 like Vol 1

Guardians of the Galaxy was a great movie and so is Vol 2. If you saw the first movie, Volume 1 was a cassette tape of music given to Starlord by his mother. Volume 2 was another cassette tape of music given to Starlord by his mother that Starlord discovered at the end of the movie. The music on Volume 2 is prominent in the sequel just like the music on Volume 1 was in the original. The story of the sequel is different from that in the original, but the music vibe carries over. Much has changed by the start of Vol 2. First, the Guardians are heroes able to charge more for their services. Second, Groot is like 12' tall. He is a happy baby Groot. Who Starlord's father is is revealed in the sequel. The fallout from that relationship is the crux of the story with the Guardians of the Galaxy living through it together as a team. In the end, the Guardians save the day again.

Marvel's favorite motley crew of reformed outlaws is back for another space adventure full of classic tunes, epic battles, and charming comedy. While it isn't quite as awesome as the original, that doesn't mean Vol. 2 isn't good. Set to the soundtrack of Meredith Quill's Awesome Mix Tape #2, which she bequeathed to her beloved young Peter, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 moves the group's story forward -- primarily for the orphaned Star Lord, who's always wondered exactly who his Star Man dad was and why he left him and his mother behind on Earth. Russell is an ideal pick to play Ego, the celestial god (lowercase "g") who hired Yondu to bring his son to him 26 years earlier. Without getting into specifics, this father-son dynamic, in classic Marvel origin-story style, is the driving force behind the tension and action in the second half of the movie.

This is the way every 3D movie coming out should be released. A 4K + 3D + 2D Bluray set. The colors on my 4K TV absolutely look fantastic, however, utilizing a 4K capable player and TV, the only way to watch this movie is in 3D. The 3D adventure is fantastic making the depth and perception of the entire move pop with a much fuller realism then any of the other formats. My recommendation is to have a "Passive" 3D T.V. so you don't have to wear the Active 3D glasses that "flicker" which makes it harder to watch (or look at your phone if you get a text). With Passive 3D glasses you can even get up to get popcorn without removing your glasses. This is an Excellent movie in 3D and brings the whole movie to life. Every release should receive the same treatment. May I also suggest "Doctor Strange" in 3D bluray. ;-)

Yeah, I'm an MCU junkie. So is my teenage daughter. What's wrong with this movie? Not much. Chris Pratt is the perfect Star Lord, Zoe Saldana is salacious as Gamora, Dave Bautista gets to embarrass his share of characters, Bradley Cooper's Rocket is still a furry jerk on the outside (but a little bowl of mush on the inside), Michael Rooker shines as Yondu, and Baby Groot gets his share of laughs and "awwwws." And hey! You've got Kurt "Snake Plissken" Russell as Ego! Kurt's performance alone was worth the cost of my Blu-ray. My only disappointment was Karen Gillan as Nebula and Sly Stallone as Stakar. Nebula didn't come across as badass as the first installment and Sly's Stakar came off as, well, just about every character he's ever played. Fun little popcorn movie that you can't help but laugh along with.

original film, but Guardians 2 delivers on a comedic, action filled comic book movie that at the very least is an equal to the first Guardians movie, but in some ways is even better. The original was a risk for Marvel, but it paid off and allowed for the sequel to get a little more in depth with character development and a good story. It was nice seeing the aftermath of the first film carry into the events of the second film and the personal development of Michael Rooker's Yondu and Bradley Cooper's Rocket, two characters that were strictly comic relief in the first movie, but played a key role in the second while showing a coherent story arc. The action scenes are crisp, the dialogue is excellent, the comedy is perfectly timed, though occasionally overdone, but overall, one of the best entries in the Marvel CU.

Picked up this movie, and started watching it about half way through I noticed some odd distortion and then the movie froze up, after several minutes it skipped to the next chapter. I went tried to restart the movie and then skipped right back to the same scene and the same thing happened. I tried a different movie just to make sure my Xbox One S was going crazy, but that movie played without issue. So I went back to the Best Buy location where I bought this movie and explained the issue, there were no issues with exchanging the movie for another. Went home later that day and played the movie, skipped back to the same scene and there were no issues. So after all that, I did enjoy the movie, the 4K quality is great and this is a great movie for any Marvel movie fan I would still highly recommend the movie.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 fails to impress in the way of a unique script/memorable story, it is made up for in terms of the film's visual effects. This film is absolutely wonderful to watch. The detailing and amount of color is spectacular. And if you are able to get your hands on the copy with the 3D disc (and you have the capability to watch 3D), it is most definitely worth picking up and watching in 3D. It's some of the studio's best live-action 3D to date - there are quite a few more shots which 'break the screen' and overall depth is impressive. Not to mention that the 3D version also includes the IMAX expanded variable aspect ratio for certain scenes whereas the 2D versions (4K and regular blu-ray) do not. Overall, a top-notch Marvel release worth picking up.

Some sequels don't measure up to the first movie in a series. And the first Guardians is a tough act to follow. But the writers, director, producters, cast, et al pulled it off in spades! Guardians Volume 2 is a good movie. Yes, the squables between characters can get a bit overworked, drawn out, and over played. However, when the characters you have are in the situation they are in and they aren't really "get along" types of folks in the first place...well, the only problem was with the writing. At least that was my take on what seemed to be too many folks problems with the movie. I'm hoping the writers, staff, and actors are able to get the whole vibe of the "Guardian's Crew" dialed in for the next installment of this fun series!

To start, I didn't think that it was as good as the first.. just my opinion. BUT if you loved the first movie, like I did then you will probably soon become addicted to the sequel. The movie is a little "darker" and adult oriented which is cool, but it didn't stick with me as much as the first one that I went to twice in theaters.. I still enjoyed it and after watching it 3 to 4x I was back at the same feeling of loving it as much as the first one, it just took a few times to get me to that point unlike the first movie that I left the theater wanting "more". Soundtrack is very memorable though which is great that you can listen to it and remember just which part of the movie that the song was played in.
