I hate this program - it means money coming out of my bank account... but seriously, it has always been easy to use and accurate; I used to use a different brand but that one installed a licensing program that was notoriously hard to remove so I switched to H&R Block - no issues in the last 10 years

    Double Check PDF Imports

If you have ever gone to H&R Block for tax filing, this looks exactly like what they use in the office. The software is well put together with all the tips and explanations you might need. While this does not replace a CPA, the software does the job extremely well and is better than fighting it yourself. A few things to be prepared (see what I did there) for, if you are scanning your W-2 or other tax forms please double and triple check what was read by the OCR. The software misread box 12c on my W2, that amounted to a significant difference in my return. We are talking about over $4,000 difference in the return. I am still verifying everything I imported or scanned for the software. There is also an option to import the w-2 from your employer, mine company was not compatible/associated with the method used to import direct from employer. Also, even though I downloaded my 2019 return from H&R Blocks website, it read the return incorrectly and missed two dependents. Just make sure you verify what is automated. Also, check for software updates. In the two weeks I have had the software it has been updated every time I have opened it. The great thing about the software is it goes back and makes sure you did not miss a field or warns if something does not look right. I was able to get my taxes done in about the same amount of time it would have taken in the office. This year we have an added requirement due to any stimulus payments you may have received. There is a link from the software to the IRS site where you need to set up an account so you can get what you stimulus payments were. Do be overwhelmed and even though the site says it takes 15 minutes it takes about two. You will need a few ways to prove your identity. Drivers license, credit card, loan numbers or quite a few other options are available to verify identity. No charges will show on your card and they just need the last 8 digits not the entire card number. Do not get overwhelmed, it is not bad. Hopefully you received the form and don't need to go this route, but I have not seen the form yet. This might explain the IRS pushing the tax filing start to Feb 15th. I did not get to use the state return, we do not pay state taxes in Florida. And I have not attempted to file yet since the start has been delayed to Feb 15th. Overall I am very happy with the process, I just wish the OCR and import functions worked a little better.

Makes Doing Taxes Quick and Easy!

H&R Block makes doing my taxes quick and easy. Once I received all of my tax documents, I was able to complete and file my taxes in under an hour. I have used both H&R Block and TurboTax over the years, and in my experience H&R Block works just as well as TurboTax. So which one you use comes down to personal preference and cost. After I received the email with activation code and download link, installation of the software was very simple. Before purchasing make sure that you select the right version, because there is a Mac version. This version only works with Windows. The software could not be easier to use. All you do is answer the questions and the software does the rest. Since I used the program last year, I was able to carry over my data from last year. The program also has a function that scans PDF copies of W-2’s and previous year tax returns. The software can be used for up to 5 electronic filings (I only needed one). The e-filing code is the software activation code. Because the software is downloaded, my data is securely stored on my computer. This will appeal to the security conscious, that do not want their sensitive information on the cloud.

I have been using H&R Tax Cut for over 10 years and it never fails me. I get the maximum refund quick and painless. If you can follow the step by step instructions and entering numbers in the fields, you will be done in no time. I also love the auto input of my info from ADP. That save even more time. The cross integration to the state taxes makes filing state in no time. Only thing I would love added it the possibility to file Ohio RITA taxes instead of their online setup that is horrible. H&R Tax Cut should be your top choice for ease of use, best layout and if you use it year to year, the speed of entry is even better by bringing in your last years taxes in seconds. Seriously, it does it all, buy this software!

Once Again the Best Tax Program

Last year was a first for me; I switched to H&R Block Deluxe for my primary tax prep software. I have used it for several years as a secondary tax prep just to check my entries and to catch anything I missed using TurboTax. With its updated user interface, I found H&R Block far easier to use last year and they have kept the UI largely the same. It's clean, intuitive, comprehensive an it avoids the excessive confirmations and attempts to upsell that plague its rival. This year, for 2020 tax prep, H&R Block Deluxe maintained its advantage not only with its superior UI, but also with the feature set. It will import from Quicken, Money, TurboTax, and of course H&R Block. The Deluxe version includes support for investments, which are only included in the Premier (and more expensive) version of its rival. Even with a modest portfolio of managed and self-directed investments, including stock, bonds, and real estate, entry was pretty easy, and the few complex transactions requiring more information were noted and handled. 2020 was the first year both my wife and I were fully retired, without employment(W2) or self-employment income, so I was able to skip those sections. As noted above, H&R Block Deluxe dealt with all of our investment income, some of which involved some fairly complex transactions. It was all very smooth, with extensive explanation help whenever I needed it. Although we haven't received all of our investment 1099's yet, I track investment income and expenses carefully during the year. I fill out 1099's manually with the tracked values, then enter the real values as the actual 1099's are received. The one caveat I have is that the automatic 1099 import did not include as extensive a list of financial institution as its rival; however manually entering the information is not difficult and the 1099 information imported from the previous years tax return eliminated the need to enter the institution information. Hopefully this will change with one of the pending updates. There is extensive help available for program use and tax information. Help is available in program, online through faq and chat, and by phone. Overall, I'd have to say that H&R Block has produced the best tax prep program for 2020 tax prep in terms of value, ease of use, and comprehensive coverage.

Summary: The software is to the point. I don’t have anything amazing to say about it or anything really bad. It gets the job done and will suit most people’s needs. Pros: -Easy to use -No bugs -Supports most tax needs for the level you purchase (read the feature set first) -Small computer footprint Cons: -Nothing fancy -High DPI screens look blurry (not optimized) -Updates are far spaced -Not easy to upgrade if tax needs change Installation: The software is your standard Windows install. Nothing special to speak of other than it is quick and painless. Upon startup you will set up your profile and activate your product (used a digital code for this install). After install the software takes up 127 MB. Use: Most items are straightforward. I input a few forms, typed in the forms and got a calculation for e-file. The only gripes I had were that software only appears to be scheduled to update once a month or so. It is nice it has a timeframe of when to expect an update but if you need something added quickly, don’t keep your fingers crossed. Next, I was using the software on a 4K monitor, the text appeared blurry and stretched. In short it is not optimized for high DPI screens. If your monitor is 1080P you should have no issues. I recommend you look closely at what your specific tax needs are. Did you buy a home? Did you sell stocks? If you are planning on purchasing this software, choose the correct version since different tiers support different tax needs. I did not see an easy way to upgrade if needed assuming my tax needs differed from what the product offered but I might have missed the option. Overall, the software is good and to the point. If you work offline a lot the software might be a good bet for you, especially if you worked with H&R Block in the past for importing. The software is stable and I never experienced any bugs or crashes.

    Good Software for the Self-Filer

This is the second year I used H&R Block to file my taxes after many years using Turbo Tax. The version that I initially tested did not include the State filing. However, Best Buy had a one-day sale for the full version (Federal & State) that was cheaper than what H&R was charging to upgrade the test version. I ended up purchasing the full version for the sale price. I found the software easy to use. I didn’t notice many changes between the 2019 tax year version and the 2020 tax year version. With 2020 being slightly more complicated tax-wise, I had a few things I wanted to ask about. In the past, I always filed as soon as I received all the necessary paperwork. I planned on doing that again this year. However, I couldn’t find the information I needed. Their customer support wasn’t available when I was working on my taxes and their self-help didn’t offer me much. I kept getting errors when trying to finalize. Google was also of no help. I got really frustrated. The only way around it was to take time away from work to call during the day, which was not something I was willing to do. In the end, the error was cleared up in a later update, but that was in March or April. I like filing my own taxes and this is a good software for that, but if you are looking for customer support, you might want to consider your schedule vs. theirs. I'll probably buy again next year.

Simple To Use, But Not Sure if It's a Home Run

I have been preparing my taxes online by myself for years at this point and have used a few of the online platform options available, this was my first instance with H&R Block. With that being said, it was simple to use, but I feel that the good features still need a bit of enhancement in my experience after using it. For instance, I appreciated being able to snap pictures of my W-2s but it was cumbersome having to reconnect to the service each time I needed to which was 4 occasions with this particular return. While this feature was helpful, you still needed to review the data and I did notice at least one W-2 that didn't accurately capture the detail needed and needed to be updated manually. This feature is only setup for W-2s currently but this would have been nice for other forms that needed to be uploaded into the software as well. After updating all I was needing this is also the first year I seem to owe but that is not on the fault of H&R Block as last year was very odd for me personally, but after adding, removing and re-adding forms to see the number change pretty drastically I am a bit unsure which is the first time I have felt this way about my taxes. I am hoping the small I amount I owe is accurate but am hoping for the best at this point.

HR Block knows taxes and this year's version of their software makes filing your taxes quick and easy. Installing the software is a breeze. You'll download the program from the HR website and enter your purchase code and you'll be good to go. The software walks you through each step of your tax return. If you've used the software in the past you can easily bring in prior year info to avoid re entering all your information. After the program walks you through each step of your taxes you can easily e file right from the application and that's all there is to it. The only problem I had was with trying to file an amended return the program kept thing the software needed to be updated when it was already up to date. But, it was a minor hiccup in a fairly easy process. Overall, the software is very easy to use and works well if you are comfortable with self service tax software. My only wish is that it was online rather than installed on my computer.

Importing last years tax information was simple and easy. All forms from last year were ready for update with the new data. Submitted the return electronically which will not be processed at IRS until Feb 12 2021. The layout of H&R software is, too me, more user friendly. Added bonus is that you get live help and audit help when needed. Will use this again next year as it was my first time with H&R after years with another tax software.

I have gone to H&R Block for the past 5 years now to file my taxes. I have always been happy with the results though sometimes the wait times can be a little long. I was delighted to see that I was going to be able to test the software & file my own taxes! Setup is straight forward & easy. I was able to download the software & install it in no time! This year with the pandemic going on the IRS stated they didn't want taxes to be filed until just a few days ago (mid-February 2021). I went ahead and loaded up my return from last year by downloading it from the H&R Block website. Then via their wonderfully designed software I was able to answer some questions, import one of my W2s from an employer & upload a PDF copy of another. Very easy & straight forward. It simplified the entering of this information for me! I had gone in thinking that filing my taxes was going to be very complicated & that I'd end up either having to have help or just become so frustrated I would give up and go to a tax preparer (like H&R Block themselves) to have them file it for me. I can definitively say that the software did what I needed it to. Any time that I needed help the Help Center that is included in the software helped me! While I am a very techy person, I am by no means a tax expert but this software from H&R Block helped me to feel more confident in preparing the taxes myself. I am very impressed with the simplicity but thoroughness of the software. I have always had great results with H&R Block in person & now the same can be said for their software. If you need to file your taxes this year (like most of us) but don't want to pay someone else to prepare them for you then the H&R Block software is definitely a great choice. They even offer different versions of the software based on your needs. So definitely make sure you compare the various offerings they have for sale & then purchase the correct one to meet your needs. This was so easy to use that I will be doing my taxes from here on out myself via the H&R Block software! You definitely can't go wrong with this!

    Getting worse

I've been using HR Block for years to file my taxes, while the software is minimal at best. There are a lot of things the software manages to nail, ease of use, good user interface, fast loading...But there are a lot of things the software fails on. The help section, isn't really helpful when I have to result in looking at google for simple tax definitions. They really need to work on updating that. Second, and the biggest one, is filling the correct forms. I was recently penalized by the IRS for filling a form under the wrong section last year. In which, I used the HR Block software and thought I was filling the correct form. This is where the software fails in my opinion. While it does try to guid the user through the filling process, it doesn't do a good job at explaining certain things clearly enough. After 2 years, I see no change in how to correctly file a 1099-NEC under section C. According to the user, everything looks good, until you get a letter from the IRS stating you owe more in taxes, because it was filed under the wrong section. There is no place on the software, that informs you what section you are filing the forms under. This was a costly mistake too! The second biggest problem I have seems to be a common trend with HR Block, and that's with all their add on purchases. "upgrade to premium for only $59.99". They charge you for the software to begin with, now they want to charge you more for a more thorough accuracy check. This isn't very good for the customer, and doesn't give me confidence in the software that I'm currently using, if now there's a more accurate version..I can't help but to get the feeling that I'm being hustled every time I use this software. Overall, the software is a hit or a miss. If you have very simple taxes, meaning you only have 1 or more w-2's then this might be for you. But if you need a more thorough tax software, then I would defiantly look elsewhere.
