Don't pay the monthly service unless you want the channels they offer. Go buy lifetime PLEX membership and enjoy the full DVR function that combining these two product can provide. Very very please with everything.

Great advice. We make sure that none of our services are contract based, so users can more easily pick and choose exactly what they want, and if they don't love it, they can get rid of it almost immediately. In fact, right now we're even offering a free trial, so users can test out any service they're interested in without paying a dime. And Plex may actually be doing something similar. That way you really can mix and match and find your perfect setup without any cost at all! Thanks much for the review!

Two great pieces of advice. We're proud how well the HDHomeRun works with all our partners, including Plex. And yeah, the better the antenna, the better the channel list, always. Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the review! And we totally agree, for those people without cable, the EXTEND, with it's built in ability to transcode to the most popular format h264, is a great device for OTA TV! Welcome to the family!

The good: The setup to just plug and go is easy, and the apps they have work on Win7, Win10, Android no problem. I think the interface is really nice. The bad: Setting up a connection with a NAS connection for the DVR license was painful, especially if you use FreeNAS for a home server. I'm guessing this is why they offer their own network storage solutions years later. The picture quality is worse through the app than through the antenna at the same point. Very blocky, more cut out distortions. Maybe it was my unit, maybe it's a result of poor transcoding... I'm not sure. I tried upgrading the firmware and it did not help. I found the unit can run surprisingly hot, much like older Roku boxes. Make sure you leave it some airflow. My unit died after about 2 years. Maybe mine was a lemon, but I think it performed poorly overall and I used it less and less as time went on. I was kind of sad when they dropped the cable channel service due to legal reasons. When it was available, it worked perfectly, and seamless with the local channels. I'll try the Scribe. Hopefully the new hardware, native storage, and lack of transcoding fixes the woes I had with this model.

We are sorry to hear about your experience! All HDHomeRun devices are designed to run without needing any help for years. In fact, your particular unit, especially when upgraded to the fan-free design, should be built basically like a tank. If you haven't contacted [email protected] already, we definitely suggest you do so. It's possible we could get it back to life and, even if you do end up upgrading, ultimately add the tuners from the EXTEND into your upgraded system.

If you find any issues in picture quality with an EXTEND, the first step is always to visit my.hdhomerun.com and make sure transcoding is turned off. Then the app will get exactly the same signal as the TV, and you'll be able to fine-tune from there.

Finally, regarding the DVR, we definitely see setting up a NAS DVR as being a pretty advanced, DIY effort, compared to the new SCRIBE, which is exactly like your initial experience: plug and go. If you decide to go that route, definitely let us know how it goes!

With an antenna in the attic feeding a distribution amplifier, this unit does a good job of receiving stations nearly 60 miles away. The HDHomeRun app. is quirky, e.g. you can't assess signal strength from within the app. For that, you need to point your Web browser the unit's address on your LAN, then investigate "Tuner Status". It would be nice if this information were accessible through the app, similar to what you can do with a discrete TV. Also, the aforementioned built-in Web server should contain help pages, so you can understand the meaning of various settings, e.g. "Transcode Profile". These are, admittedly, nitpicks. Overall, I am satisfied with the unit.
