Soothing & Calming Sand Art

I didn't know what to think when I first received the meditation table. The video and description advertises it as something that'll be calming so that's what I was looking for. It was exactly that. This little marble sized ball creates art in the sand from a large selection of designs on the app. You can pick the speed that the ball moves in and the colors that it shows while controlling brightness, color temperature, and time between color changes if desired. The app shows you the percentage of completion of the design you selected and there is a feeling of calmness watching the ball move around in the sand in such a satisfying way where it isn't making any mistakes. I had two other people give me their thoughts and they claimed it was soothing and calming to them. The only missing element is sound which is not a deal breaker since you can get a Bluetooth speaker and put it next to the table. The visuals are amazing and having a table that makes these unique designs in the sand is definitely a conversation piece.
One extra neat feature I should mention is that you have the ability to schedule designs so that it begins when you wake up or come home from a stressful day of work. The table is activated and programed through Bluetooth only so keep in mind that you have to be near the table to turn it on, select designs, and manipulate speed and color.
Overall, I am really enjoying watching that little metal ball make art in the sand. Also, setting it up was very simple and took less than 10 minutes after removing from the box.
Enjoy!

Hypnotic and Engaging - But VERY Difficult to Use

This is a sizeable round display box, mine is nearly 2 ft in diameter, that includes a shallow dusting of sand and a small magnetic ball that traces out insanely intricate patterns in the sand - then it overlays those patterns with new patterns. Watching it in practice is mesmerizing - but figuring things out was a mess!
This large and heavy unit came without instructions. I could figure out a few basic things through interacting - on/off, scrolling through colors of back-lighting. But I couldn't get anything going directly through simple interaction.
A guidebook is available online, but it offers little support. Suffice it to say that you need to install an app to fully interact with this unit.
The application is wholly unintuitive - very pretty, but unintuitive and badly designed. I was able to get the device to start with the app but couldn't get it to initiate any patterns. It took countless interactions with the app to realize that there was a way to open up a link to download banks of patterns. So: a device whose only purpose is to create patterns comes with an application that includes NO patterns.
Next: the app needs to have a Bluetooth connection established with the device to send it pattern control. I thought that this must imply that the pattern creation algorithms were controlled directly from the app (and through Bluetooth). But it turns out that the sand table can continue to draw patterns continuously in my absence (so why did I need to start with the app in the first place?). And even now that I know how to access the pattern base, I'm still not clear how my choices in the app are reflected in the pattern cycle of the device.
Whenever I return to the device and open the app, I have to tell it again which device I have. Really?
The table came with two bags of fine white sand - the (online) directions only mentioned one. Turns out that using a single bag produced a covering that was too shallow to display stunning patterns - turns out that using both bags produced sand dunes that prevented the table from functioning properly. Seems like the whole sand issue should have been resolved prior to release.
I tend to like the look of the table without the interior lights on. Ultimately, you can control color and brightness very well using the app but I thought it looked more meditative in ambient light. Also: there were very tiny imperfections in the white coating on the glass cover for the unit - little pinholes that transmitted little distracting fragments of direct light from the box - and little distracting fragments of direct light aren't particularly meditative (see picture below).
But the movement and patterns created here are insane and are very engaging. Initially, I thought the patterns would just be created as valleys from the movement of the ball - so much more fascinating that the really intricate patterns are formed by how the ball actually shifts tiny walls of sand into place.
The mechanics of this device are amazing and the sand table is engrossing and hypnotic and fully engaging. I can't fathom how a company spent so much attention to mechanical detail while creating an application that is practically unusable. There is no excuse for a modern device to have such embarrassing applications - HoMedics is not a new company and the user's experience should not be an impediment to use.
And this is not a cheap bauble. I really can't recommend this.

The first time I saw a sand plotting table I thought they were very cool but insanely expensive, I'm glad HoMedics came to market with a couple of more affordable options. I can honestly say that I enjoy the HoMedics drift much more than I anticipated. I catch myself just stopping and watching it without intending to. It's very enjoyable to watch the ball move smoothly through the sand leaving behind lines of varying thickness adding up to complex designs. There are over 140 patterns to choose from in the app. You can configure a custom playlist or choose from pre-made playlists of complimentary patterns. You can even choose to have the unit pause after every completed design to make sure you don't miss a design. The lighting is very pleasing and adjustable to fit your taste. Using the app you can choose either a static color or choose a set of colors to rotate through. I currently have the lighting set to a slightly warm white at a medium intensity for use as a night light in our baby nursery. It provides a relaxing vibe for those middle of the night feedings. Overall the drift is a very enjoyable piece of furniture that I'm glad to have in my home.

The HoMedics Drift Sand Table is a unique piece of art that is designed to offer relaxation as well as provide an artful center peace to your room. The Drift came extremely well packaged and includes the bowl-shaped base, glass top piece, sand, power adapter, sand smoothing tool and a round metal ball to create the patterns. These are available in 16” and 21” and in black or cream colors. There was supposed to be a single page instruction included but mine did not have that. I contacted HoMedics customer service and within 5 minutes they emailed me a PDF of this page. The instructions tell you to set the bowl and put the sand in and using the tool spread the sand as level as possible. Once the sand is leveled out set the metal ball in the center of the bowl. The 21” version comes with 2 packages of sand. I believe the 16” version comes with one package of sand. Once the sand is leveled you can install the glass top piece to protect the sand and give you the viewing window. The glass is thick and heavy and provides a nice addition to the table. There is a 3” black ring around the glass top which makes the viewing window only 15”. I debated between the 16” version and the 21” version and am really glad I went with the 21” version as the 15” viewing window is the perfect size. If the ring on the 16” version has the same 3” ring it would make the viewing window only 10”. Once you see what this sand table produces having the larger viewing window is a real plus. Once everything is set up you need to load the Drift app which is available for IOS and Android. I have an Android phone so that is what I used. I would recommend that you not plug in the Drift until all of these steps are performed. I noticed there were 2 buttons on the bowl and I plugged the Drift in before completing these steps and realized the device was trying the find the metal ball and had to unplug it once I tried to create the first pattern. Once I unplugged it it was able to find the metal ball. The app connects via Bluetooth but does not show as a device in you Bluetooth device list. This is good as it allows you to connect to other Bluetooth devices while using the Drift. I have read some other reviews saying the ball gets hung up in the sand. The first thing the app does is perform a clean pattern (at least mine did) which levels the sand and prepares it for the first pattern. If you didn’t do this initially one of the patterns in the app is the Clean pattern and you can run it. This process took about an hour at which point I was ready to check out some patterns. There are about 100 patterns in the app so I proceeded to check some out. The app allows you to select what pattern you want and you can adjust the speed at which it is produced. You can hear the ball moving in the quiet room and the sound increases as the speed increases but is not overly loud. I set the speed to the highest level and the patterns would complete in about 45 minutes. Once you connect the app to the table you can turn it on by setting the speed and choosing a pattern. There is also a light ring around the outside of the sand that within the app you can adjust to change colors from 5 seconds to 150 seconds. You can also customize the colors. I just let mine change the standard colors every 10 seconds. Once I started the first pattern, I found myself fixated on the movement of the ball and the pattern being created. The next thing I knew I had spent 6 hours watching this table produce multiple patterns. I set this up in my living room so I could also listen to music. Very calming experience. The app as others have mentioned takes a little getting used to as if you access other apps on your phone the connection will drop from the Drift however if it is in the process of creating a pattern the process will not stop but you will have to reconnect to access functions of the app. One nice feature of the app is that it shows you a picture of the pattern you have selected and gives you a percentage of completion. You can also create a playlist of patterns to perform and either stop between each pattern or continue to the next pattern after one is completed. The playlists don’t always save when you exit the app though. I turn the Drift on from the app by using the speed setting from my bedroom which is around 40-50 feet away from the Drift and it connects and I can begin a new pattern in morning when I get up and have a new pattern when I go down stairs in the morning. This is a great device to relieve the stress of the day. I wouldn’t call this an impulse purchase item as it is not inexpensive at $500 but I definitely think it is worth every dollar spent. My friends who never even knew such a device existed have been so impressed with this table they are considering getting one themselves. If you suffer from anxiety as I do or just want to relax from a stressful day this is the best thing I have found and it makes for a great center piece to you room. I highly recommend this product.

I like it overall, but it was way more difficult than it should have been to get it working properly. The first problem is that there were no written instructions on how to set it up. There was only a QR code on the outside of the box that leads to a product webpage that has a link to the app. No directions anywhere. But how hard could it be, I thought. There are very few separate pieces in the box. The main table, two packs of sand, a glass cover, the ball bearing, a spreading tool/rake, and a power cord. So while the app is downloading and installing, I put it all together. One pack of sand seems like not enough, two seems about right. I use the rake to spread it around, put the ball bearing in and the lid on, then plug it in. As the app starts up, it runs through setup instructions. I notice that it says to add one bag of sand, but assume that must be for the smaller table. Since I have the larger size and one bag seemed like not enough, adding both bags was probably right for my device. Everything looks like it's working right, but the ball gets a third of the way through the basic pattern and stops. It moves a bit when the magnet comes back around, but stops again. I try a different pattern and the ball moves halfway to the edge of the table and stops. I search for troubleshooting steps, but there's nothing that describes my problem. I try resetting the table to factory settings and resetting the app multiple times with no improvement. I remember that the setup instructions in the app said the sand didn't need to be exactly level, but I think maybe it needs to be more level than I had it, so I try spreading it out more evenly. That helps a bit, but it still stops about halfway out from the center of the table. Finally, I try removing some of the sand and thinning it out. That helps more, so I keep removing more and more sand until the ball will make it all the way around the entire surface of the table. Now it's working but there are thin spots where the pattern is barely visible. So I add some of the sand back in the thin spots until the pattern is clearly visible everywhere. Sometimes it's too much, and I have to re-level the sand out or move it from one area of the table to another, but that's not always so easy, because the teeth in the spreading tool/rake aren't sized to make it the right level, you also have to angle the tool just right to push the right amount of sand around. After several hours of adjusting and spreading and retrying patterns, I finally get just the right amount of sand spread out evenly. (In my estimation, more than one bag, but definitely less than two.) It then works mostly well, though there were some issues with turning off the table and restarting and getting my phone to communicate properly with it. The app and firmware were recently updated, and that seems to have fixed the issue with re-pairing after turning the table off. I have found that the best way for me to enjoy it, is to just loop a long pattern playlist and let it run constantly. I set the lights to cycle different colors every 30 seconds to provide variety without being distracting. My daughter hates the sound it makes as the ball rolls through the sand, but I don't find it unpleasant. Now that I've got it working properly, I really like it, but the initial setup was extremely frustrating.

This definitely turned into the product that I never knew I needed in my house until I actually got one. I’d seen them in a few different places but none were actually working. After watching a video online I took a chance and ordered one!
There’s something great to be said for anything that can pull me in and make me practice mindfulness even for a few minutes. The Drift does just that - and you’ll quickly be mesmerized by the array of patterns and colors this unit has to offer.
Once you’re connected using the app - of which the process itself is a little unintuitive until you learn what name your Drift goes by in the list of detectable Bluetooth devices around your house - you’ll be presented with a lot of options to customize the device. This includes everything from downloading new patterns for it to “draw”, color configuration, and even timers so that you don’t have to run it 24/7. I have mine set for evenings when I’m most likely to be in the living room, and it automatically turns itself off before I go to bed.
Because it’s constantly being upgraded with new designs and is really just a fun thing to watch, my rating started at a 5. I took away a point for the unintuitive pairing process and lack of clear directions.
Side note - HoMedics customer service was great and jumped right in to help with the pairing; I’d just prefer better instructions than the ones provided.

Art, lighting, decor and wellness all in one!

The HoMedics Drift meditation sand table has been one of the coolest decorative items I’ve ever owned! It’s decor with function and the function is to captivate and soothe your mind. I know they call it a table, and you can rest a drink on it or set other decorative items on it for display, but I prefer to think of it as additional lighting, more of a low profile lamp with some really great features!
The Drift came packaged in a large sturdy cardboard clamshell box with an easy carry handle. Attached to the inner lid of the Drift box is an instruction card that upon first glance looks like a promo card, until you see the note on the bottom corner indicating the “Instructions on back”. I actually thought I didn’t receive the instructions at first glance but then took a better look and saw the note. Upon flipping over the card you quickly see how easy this is to get set up. Just pour the sand packets onto the white surface, near the center. Rake the sand out as level as you can get it using the included sand rake tool. Place the metal sphere on top of the sand, near the center and place the glass lid on top of the base. Finally, you attach the power adapter and plut it into the outlet. The next step is to download the app, but the table will work without it, if you want to give it a try before proceeding to the app. There are two buttons, near the base that control the power and lighting. The light button can be pressed to change colors and held to turn the light off. The power button can be pressed to start and stop the ball, which seems to default to a cleanup pattern, and held to turn the machine off. The cleanup pattern is a tight spiral that runs from the center to the perimeter of the surface.
It took me a few minutes to get familiarized with the app. Connecting to the table with my phone was quick and setting up my first pattern and lighting effect was really easy. Not all of the patterns are preinstalled and many do have to be downloaded. This requires a steady connection from the Drift table to your phone, which sometimes takes a few try's, and sometimes I can’t get it to work at all, with the app displaying the message, “Error while loading”. I’ve also had problems getting the playlists to play. I’m not sure if it’s my phone, the app, or both, but there do seem to be a few small issues. With the playlists, I think the problem is having to download all the patterns at once. I’ve noticed that the app appears to not be working when I select a playlist to play, but when I close it and reopen it, the playlist I previously chose is in fact working and playing on the device. I use a Google Pixel and my husband uses an Apple iPhone. He hasn’t had any of the issues I’ve had, so it must be my phone or the Android marketplace app. Overall the app is moderately easy to use, when it’s working, which is most of the time, but there are some hiccups.
There are hundreds of patterns available on the Drift. Some of them have messages like “#1 Dad” or “You are loved”, while others are symbolic of our favorite holidays with a Christmas Tree and a Thanksgiving turkey available. I really hope they expand upon these message and holiday type patterns which give it that extra personal touch. Another cool future feature would be the ability to create your own limited space, text only, message patterns, which is totally doable with some additional programming. Maybe we will see that in a future update or release.
At first I put the Drift table onto a large wooden bowl, on the floor of my living room. The bowl raised it up from the floor and acted as a pedestal. It actually looked really cute and makes me think HoMedics should sell a few different types of stands for this, for those who want that option. After a couple weeks, and a few dog toy drops onto the surface of the table, I decided to move it onto my curved Umage cabinet where the round Drift table fits nicely onto the surface of the cabinet. It almost looks like they were made for each other. Plus it adds just the right amount of adjustable lighting to that corner of the room. I love it!
Overall this table is great. The pattern creation truly is mesmerizing to watch and helps to calm your mind after a long day. It helps you to put down your phone and focus on one thing for a while, and it doesn’t get boring at all! The lighting is really fun and I love the spectrum of colors and effects available. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to add a functional piece of art to their life, that is both a conversation starter and a homeopathic tool to help improve their overall wellness.

Sand Art for the Home

The 21” Homedics Drift Meditation Sand Table is such a calming, aesthetically appealing feature to add to the home or office. This is honestly one of my favorite decor pieces based on ambience. I obtained this sand table for my home and I will soon have my own office which I plan to get one for there also! The 21” sand table is adequate size, appearing larger than I had expected. Fills out a normal size coffee table well. Uses innovative technology to add the perfect touch to a room. The cream color is a subtle off-white.
Set up is quick. There was no instruction in box. When downloading the Homedics Drift app, basic instructions are given. Everything comes safely packaged with the glass top, marble, sand, and power adapter. Cut open the 2 bags of sand, flatten it out (really does not have to be perfect… over time it balances out the sand), put the marble in the middle, glass top over and plug in with the AC adapter. With the app, can select from a large number of designs, pre-made playlist of designs, or create your own. The designing gets underway right away!
The table has LED mood-lights that can be controlled in the app. The marble speed can also be controlled in the app also. Playlists can have up to 20 designs with them that will cycle as the day progresses. I enjoyed going downstairs and seeing a new design in process. The preset designs have an impressive amount of variety and appeal to everyone. You can get creative if you’d like for design, but the pre-sets allow for this to not be a necessity.
I am extraordinarily satisfied with this new addition to my home. It is not only art but also wellness. The table is designed to boost mood, inspire creativity, enhance focus, and increase relaxation, which I can agree does it all. I am so thankful to own this statement piece that invites serenity.

Drift is a very interesting product. I got the larger 21” version, and it’s bigger than I expected, I’ve placed it on top of my wife’s baby grand piano, where due to it’s 6” height, it might be a little too high for those that are altitude challenged to see. I might need to find a shorter table so that it’s easier to observe. The whole point of drift is to provide relaxation. It was very easy to set up, pour the 2 bags of fine white sand into the round “sand field” which has a bit of texture to it. The unit comes with a card which has “teeth” in it to smooth the sand out. You don’t need to be very accurate, as once you run it for a few hours, the sand will find its own level. You then drop the ball bearing onto the sand and put the glass cover on top on (I suggested to my wife we leave the cover off and see what the cat does, she did not think that it was funny as this is pretty expensive to let the cat at it, for whatever purpose). There is a single power adapter that gets connected to it and there are two buttons on it that may never get used once you install the app. An on/off button and a switch which manually causes the color to change/turn off.
There is an iOS and Android app that you will use for control. First you have to pair it with Bluetooth, the name of my unit was not intuitive, something like: KS45673455, and any time I go back in the app I have to reselect the device (a bug they should fix, I notified them). They have over 120 patterns defined, you can select one at a time or set up a play list (which is limited to 20 patterns?) You can setup any number of named playlists, but only one can be current. Why it won’t just pick and play the favorites you’ve selected I don’t understand. You can schedule it to come on and off at a selected time on every day of the week. But you can’t define a playlist to be used each day.
The status screen will tell you what its doing, what color light is selected and what percentage of the drawing is done. You can set the speed that it draws, and the brightness of the surrounding LEDs. You can also define what how the LEDs change colors, from what to what… All easy to do.
Once you’ve selected a pattern it begins to draw, between drawings, it may “clean” surface. And you can have it pause after each drawing is complete. They say it is soothing to watch the ball move silently across the table, but in all honesty, you can hear this thing “quietly” moving the ball from across the room. Maybe the white noise it makes is soothing, but you can hear it.
It is definitely is interesting to watch, it does relax you. The patterns are pretty detailed, if you don’t know what to expect, you end up guessing what it might do next, like it has a mind of its own. Very quickly a couple of minutes go by, then a couple more, and it is doing it job. I found several other minor issues with the Drift app, I contacted their support email about each, I never got any responses.

It was kind of an impulse purchase - but something I've always wanted. The HoMedics drift Meditation Sand Table is quite the conversation piece. The 21" version is large. Large enough to be it's own end table. It would have been nice to come with an adjustable stand - so that's something I'm still keeping my eye out for.
Unboxing the table, it was easy to assemble, but a little tricky to evenly distribute the sand. However, with a bit of use, I think it has distributed the sand will on its own.
My whole family was home for the maiden run - and it was funny to see everyone crowding around the table - watching the steel ball draw images in the sand. The LED lights enhanced the experience - and the whole family was mesmerized. Even the teenage friends that were over stood around and watched - or checked in every few minutes to see the progress on the new pattern.
The app makes it easy to change the lights, set color changing effects or play a new pattern. There are many patterns to choose from, and I'm hoping they continue to release more.
I rated only 4 stars due to a few reasons:
1. I would have liked a little adjustable height stand to come with it making it even more usable as a piece of furniture.
2. I've looked around a bit with no success, but I was wondering if I could import pictures into the app and have it render it into a drawable item. Doesn't seem like that functionality exists yet. Hoping for something like it in the future.
3. Comparing to images from other sand tables, is seems like there are fewer images available on the drift - again hoping that changes and they continue to release new patterns and pictures.
Overall - the HoMedics drift Meditation Sand Table is fun to use, definitely a conversation starter and help take away your stress while you watching the image unfold.

Received this item and setup was a breeze! remove from box, pour out 2 bags of sand and toss in the bearing ball, put on top. My 12yo did this, while i downloaded and setup the app.
And it started the cleaning patter, but would only get about 80%. Ran this a few times with the same results. Contacted the support center and they overnighted me a new unit!!
Ran the setup again and paired up - SUCCESS!!
Since then its been running quite well. I dont think it loud at all. just the white noise of sand moving. I don't pay it much attention.
There are many many patterns and play lists to run.
My kids like the led and it does add to the room ambiance and how a pattern looks.
Top is glass, so its easy to clean.
You have simple controls - pattern selections, speed, and then the light color. There are some other options like pattern shuffle and pause between patterns.
App has a dark/light theme and scheduling - so it only runs at night and you have a daily pattern.
The only upgrade i can think of would be a speaker for soothing white/brown noise to mask the sand!
overall good product, looks very nice and much cheaper than the other options I have seen for this very product!
