Customers are satisfied with the SmartWash PET Corded Handheld Deep Cleaner's excellent carpet cleaning, ease of use, and relatively quick drying time. Many appreciate its lightweight design, making it easy to maneuver, and powerful suction. While some wish for a longer cord, the overwhelmingly positive feedback points to a highly effective and user-friendly cleaning experience. A few users experienced issues with the belt.

I had a previous Hoover and had issues after almost 4 years, and decided to stay with Hoover, but get the better Pet model. I wasn't disappointed as it really grabs the pet hair. I tend to vacuum before shampooing, but this still grabs what hair and nasty stuff from the floor.

This product works really well. The automatic wash and dry during cleaning is excellent. However, the quantity of cleaning solution per clean water is difficult to measure. Large tanks for the dirty water may also be provided.
The user Manual does not provide adequate information on the ratio of cleaning solution to clean water to be used for a sizable carpet.

Very happy with this purchase! We have 2 kids below teenage and 3 giant breed dogs (all of whom are amazingly messy) and light colored rugs. This has been a life savor and earned its value 10x over!

I was super excited to test out the Hoover smartwash pet complete automatic carpet cleaner. I was already familiar with their new model type from an infomercial I saw on TV and thus had very high expectations. We have two dogs and two children, none of which I believe to be house broken (totally kidding). Needless to say, where we have carpet and upholstery in our home, we NEEDED this device to be good. The smartwash delivered as advertised for us, wonderfully!
My out of the box experience was pleasant and not overwhelming. The unit was simple to put together and make vacuum ready. I will advise to thoroughly read the instructions, give yourself time, and be patient. I had literally never used a carpet cleaner before (I would normally hire someone) and so for me each step was a learning step. The instructions were clear enough that each time I started to second guess my action(s) (i.e... where to put the solution, pretreat, water, hose, or how much of) my answer was easily obtain. I started off by pretreating my sofas because my pets (large dogos) like to sleep, drool, and shed on the furniture and for that matter my kids as well (again kidding but not really). I used the wand with the included pretreat stain fighter and let it sit. I then went to town using the scrubbing brush attachment and the dried finished result looks great. Our sofas are about 7 years old but still in perfect condition say for looking worn out. My wife and I were already talking about just buying new ones and thanks to this unit, I have at least bought myself sometime before she makes me :^P.
Next, I tackled the carpets. We have a beige low medium woven high tread carpet that is a few years old; it is more or less clean looking, but we aren’t parade of homes looking if you know what I mean. Operating the cleaner is very entertaining. As you push forward, the unit washes the carpet and then as you pull back, the unit dries with a built-in heating device. The brushes are angled to have more effect on the carpet to deep wash, pull the water back up and to power through pulling the pet hair up. There are cool little notice lights that let you know what part of the process the vacuum is doing per your motion too. The unit is pretty light even when completely full so the activity of vacuuming was not an arduous one. I was worried the floors would take all day to dry but that was not case in most area. There were a couple of spots I hit with the pretreat, the scrubber brush and then went over a bunch of times to get it to my satisfaction level that did take a bit longer but not all day. The end results here were again, wonderful. The carpets look, smell, and feel new again. The cleanup process was a ProcesS, but it really put into perspective how much dog hair and dirt we were living on and the need to do this so much more regularly.

This new Hoover carpet cleaner is a clear step above other similar units I’ve used over the years in both features and performance. While most home carpet cleaners work in a similar way (water and solution is dispensed onto the carpet, agitated with some type of brush assembly, and then extracted into a “dirty water” tank, this unit sets itself apart with ease of use and incredibly thoughtful design.
Pros:
- The double row of brushes cleans carpets and removes dirt and stains very well
- Dries carpets better than most - includes a dedicated drying mode
- Easy to use
- Separate tanks for clean water and cleaning solution so no pre-mixing is needed
- Excellent overall design that makes operating and cleaning the machine easy
- Detachable handle converts in a battery-powered stain spot treatment wand
Cons:
- The machine didn’t cut off when the clean water tank was empty, so you need to keep an eye on this while cleaning and refill when needed
I’ve owned several carpet cleaners over the years and this is without a doubt the best I’ve used. The overall design is by far the most well thought through execution I’ve seen, with quality soft touch materials, easy assembly, and, perhaps even more importantly, easy disassembly for when it comes time to clean the machine and the brushes. Unlike many machines, the clean water tank is easy to drain when done and the brushes snap right out of their assembly with no tools required. The brushes also rotate against a bar that keeps them relatively free of hair and fluff as they spin.
Usage is simple. Fill the clean water tank and the cleaning solution tank (that machine will do the mixing for you). Turn on. Push forward to clean and pull back to dry. At first I was concerned about this being automated, but in practice it works really well. There are also two bright indicator lights to so know when the machine is cleaning vs. drying. There’s also an easy to activate “dry only” mode which worked great for going back over the carpet after cleaning to make sure I’d picked up as much water as possible. It is similarly easy to rinse the carpet. Just remove the cleaning solution tank and the machine dispenses clean water in the clean cycle to rise the carpet of any residual detergent.
Results have been excellent. Our cat left some good test cases for us and this machine did away with both the stains and the smell. It also did a great job picking up dirt from high traffic areas and dealing with one particularly stubborn long-term stain.
The cleaner also comes with a hand operated cleaning attachment and an extension hose for hand cleaning upholstery and stairs.
With quality construction, ease of use, great results, and design that makes it seem like the design team actually had to use the machine themselves, this one is a winner.

The Hoover Smartwash automatic carpet cleaner is like the Cadillac of carpet cleaners, it looks nice, has plenty of attachments, and does the job well.
The cleaner itself has 2 attachments that are very useful. My favorite attachment (which is actually part of the handle) is the spot sprayer. This is a very useful tool as it helps you spray spots that are really bad and need special attention. To use it you simply press the release button, and the handle of the cleaner detaches and becomes a spot sprayer. It works very well and helps to get those extra dirty spots.
The cleaner also comes with an Antimicrobial pet tool, which basically means it's a hose with a small attachment that cleans smaller spaces. The main use for this tool is to clean up after your pet has an accident on the carpet and helps prevent growth and odors. I found that this works really well on carpeted stairs, and places that the cleaner can't reach. As an added bonus, there is a nice storage bag included for the attachment.
As for the main unit, the cleaner has 4 containers. The main 2 containers take up the majority of the base unit, which are used for clean water and dirty water. The other smaller containers are used for the cleaning solution and the spot chaser. It's pretty simple to start cleaning right away, all you have to do is simply fill up the container with cleaning solution and fill up the main container with warm water, and then you're ready to go. I like how Hoover designed the functionality of this cleaner, it works very well and is easy to push without much resistance. As you push the cleaner forward, it sprays the cleaning solution and spins the brushes. And as you pull the cleaner backwards, it automatically stops spraying and starts sucking up the dirty solution. There is also a nice feature that you can turn on called dry only, this turns off the sprayer and just sucks up all of the remaining wet solution on the carpet. This is a handy feature that really cuts the drying time down. As for the results of the carpet, everything turned out fresh and looked almost like new again.
Overall, I am really satisfied with the Smartwash Pet Cleaner. The detachable spot sprayer is a great tool for harder to clean spots, and the antimicrobial pet tool is great for cleaning harder to reach areas and stairs. The way that the cleaner operates is really cleaver, by pushing to clean and pulling to dry. Finally the dry only button really works well to dry the carpet faster and gets any reaming dirty solution left in the carpet. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good carpet cleaner.

As someone living with a geriatric cat and a standard wiener dog, the occasional pet related mess is pretty much an unavoidable fact of life. I’ve generally sought to address this with a variety of spot cleaners. This is the first time I’ve tried a full mostly automated carpet cleaner, and I have to say that it’s hard to imagine ever going back to the smaller units.
The designers of the Smartwash have clearly gone out of their way to make the unit perform much more like a standard vacuum than your average carpet cleaner, which means operation is refreshingly simple. Pushing the unit forwards puts it in “wash” mode, where it lays down the cleaning solution and uses a pair of large brushes to work the cleaner deep into the carpet. Pulling it backwards switches to dry mode where the brushes stop and suction pulls the waste water and detergent into a gray water tank. In cases of particularly stubborn stains, pre-treatment can be applied via an applicator that serves double duty as the unit’s handle. Concentrated detergent is automatically mixed within the Smartwash on demand, and removing the small detergent tank at the back switches it to rinsing your carpet to get rid of any residual detergent – a very welcome feature for anyone who might be scent sensitive.
While I fortunately did not have any fresh stains to test the cleaner out on, I did have a few ghosts of accidents past that had taken place over the holidays (2 urine, one vomit) that had so far resisted all my previous attempts to remove them. The vomit and the first urine stain came up after just two passes using the Hoover Paws and Claws shampoo and a single rinse. You couldn't even find the spots that had been stained with a black light. The last one managed to hang on, however after using the pre-treatment wand and giving it another few passes it too fell before the brushes of the Smartwash. This unfortunately left me without a good candidate to test the included alternate cleaning head meant for deep stains that need a bit of extra work, but if it performs half as well as the standard cleaning head I have high hopes. The unit did just as well coaxing dirt out of carpet that I'd thought was clean. My carpets get vacuumed daily and the air in my home is filtered, so dust accumulation is usually not an issue. But this thing somehow managed to coax out a substantial amount of dirt and grime that the other appliances missed. Best of all: only an hour or so after I finished, the carpet was dry to the touch.
There are, unfortunately, a few downsides. First: it must be said that the SmartWash is very big even by carpet cleaner standards. The upright vacuum style brush head significantly adds to the overall footprint of the unit, making it noticeably chunkier than even a standard upright vacuum. You’ll probably want to be sure you’ve got the closet space to spare before committing to getting one. The second is the fact that there isn’t really a great way to move it around. The initial impulse is to pick it up by the handle, like you would any other vacuum, however it only took me about thirty seconds to realize this might not be a good idea. There is a large fresh water tank which sits above the gray water tank, and when full this makes the Smartwash deceptively top-heavy (as well as just heavy.) Since the handle is meant to be easily removed to be used as a pre-treatment wand, I have some serious concerns about how much weight it can realistically take and for how long. The carrying handle you’re meant to use is actually located much lower, about half way down the main body behind the gray water tank. With so much weight from the water tank being located above this point, it’s not exactly the easiest thing to lug up a set of stairs. Though given that you hopefully shouldn’t need to be using this thing on a weekly basis, it’s a flaw I think I can live with.
It’s not something I’d recommend for everyone. In fact I’d go so far as to say it’s probably ludicrous overkill for most people. But if you do find yourself using a carpet cleaner often enough that it makes sense to get your own, a unit like this is probably the one to get.

This has to be one of the easiest carpet cleaners that I've ever used! It's easy to put together and really is as simple as pushing forward to clean, pulling backwards to dry. Yes, there is some setup required, but it's relatively painless. You put water in the water tank, solution in the solution tank, and the cleaner mixes them for you as you go. No need to measure or guess at how much you need. I also recommend putting some wax paper or foil under the legs of wooden furniture nearby. Even if you aren't cleaning right up to the furniture, some water could get near them and cause damage.
I recommend a three step process. Clean the carpet with the solution included. If you need to pre-treat any spots, the handle detaches to become a pre-treating wand. Once you've cleaned the carpets, empty the dirty water tank, re-fill the clean water tank, and remove the solution tank. Then go back over the area you cleaned with just water to flush any remaining residue from the cleaning solution. After doing that, push the button on top that says DRY ONLY and go over the area until you're not seeing any water coming up through the nozzle. This will greatly reduce the drying time needed because it sucks the majority of water and moisture out of the carpet. This is one of the best features of this machine!
I didn't realize how much dirt was in our carpet. It's a relatively new carpet, only 2 years old, and it's only upstairs. We don't have kids and don't wear shoes or bring food upstairs. We do have a golden retriever who is only upstairs if we are, but overall we vacuum multiple times a week and take great care of the carpet. Still, there was a lot that came out in that dirty water tank! Truly amazed at how well this worked for a non-professional, home use machine.
I would highly recommend this to anyone, whether you have kids/pets/both/neither. As I said, we take great care of our carpets and there was still a lot of dirt in there that the vacuum just can't get. This machine is a great addition to our home cleaning routine and I'm glad we have it on hand now when there is an accident from the dog or something gets spilled. Regardless of spot cleaning, we'll be using it a couple of times a year just to maintain the carpet, which looks brand new again! Great work Hoover!

This is one of the better carpet cleaners I have used. Cleans very well and is easy to use.
Whats in the box: Carpet cleaner, extra hand attachment with hose for small spots or furniture, trial bottles of shampoo and pre-treatment.
Setup: Very easy. Click the removable handle (more on that later) into place, put the dirty and clean water containers in place, and put the shampoo container in place and you're done. It comes with a nice bag to keep the hose and hand attachment stored when not using.
Use: Fill the shampoo container with, well, shampoo. Fill the clean water container with water and plug it in. The handle is removable, and is used as a pre treatment gun. It has its own separate storage tank for pre treat fluid, and is battery powered. You walk around your house like a sniper and aim and shoot at the tougher stains and let it soak in for a few minutes. You then just re-click the handle back into place and you're off and running. This is advertised as you just use it like a vacuum, and that is somewhat true. You push forward and it automatically starts spraying water/cleaning solution, and when you pull back it dries. No squeeze trigger, no guessing, it just does it. If you need extra drying, there is a button you can push and it will only dry, even on the forward pushes.
Cleaning quality: Excellent. The brushes are beasts, and the pre treat helps as well. I was able to remove stains in one or two passes, when other units I've used would take many more on the same type of stain (think cat vomit). I do like that the hand held unit is separate and removable so you don't always have to lug it around with you. The hose simply clicks into place when you want to use it. It works great as well.
Cleanup: Yes, you still have to clean this thing, and that is the worst part of carpet cleaners. It is as easy as it could be though. I LOVE that the dirty water and clean water bins are separate, and not combined like my previous unit. The brushes click out of place and are easily accessible as well.
Overall: Great carpet cleaner. Easy to use and clean up afterwards. Does a great job actually cleaning carpets as well.

Thank you Hoover - great carpet cleaner!!! This was very easy to assemble and only took about 5 minutes. I love the top handle grip and the fact that there isn't a trigger button there to have to push to use the machine (like my old one). I don't like where the carry handle is located though - wish it were more on the front of the machine. I have an older cat that throws up so I do have some spots on my off-white carpet that have stained from his food/throwup. I was crossing my fingers this would remove them and it did!! I did use the spot cleaner and then wait about 10 minutes before going over it with the whole carpet cleaner. So thrilled the leftover stains are gone!! This machine has great cleaning ability, great suction and a good amount of cleaner that is dispersed. I love that you just use this like a vacuum - push forward to disperse and pull back to suck cleaning solution up - no more trigger on the handle. I went back over most areas with just water to make sure solution was out and then followed up with the great feature DRY ONLY mode! The double row of brushes do a fabulous job cleaning. I used the smaller scrubbing tool with really nice rubberized nubs for a few spots on the front of my stairs where the delivery guys dragged my new mattress in dirty plastic up them! Thankfully they are also clean now. I do wish the cord was a big longer but not a deal breaker. This cleaner removes dirt, dust, and cat hair that the human eye just doesn't notice, and the regular vacuum doesn't pick up. I like the extra hose attachment for upholstery and will use it on the cars when the weather gets better. I have leather furniture so won't be using it there! After completing the carpets it was very simple to remove the tanks and brushes (thankfully they are removable!!) to clean them. I like that is came with an attachment/hose bag too. Load that up and hang it in my front closet - out of the way. My carpets now smell nice and fresh and no trace of where the cat threw up! Very happy with this Carpet Cleaner!!
