Arrived very well packaged however it was very easy to un-package. Easy assembly and very simple yet precise instructions. Nice looking machine and has a 22-foot-long electrical cord. Following the instructions, it did a great job of cleaning our area carpets and cloth furniture. I was surprised at how much dirt was removed out of our area rugs that were recently cleaned. Takes a little getting accustomed to the automatic application of the cleaning fluids, the “Push forward to clean and pull back to dry” feature. Instructions state you just use the SMARTWASH carpet cleaner as if you are vacuuming and the SMARTWASH will dispense cleaning solution when moving forward and automatically change to suction when pulling back. You can simply remove the cleaning solution tank and use water only to insure you remove any residual cleaning product out of the carpet. A nice feature is the “DRY ONLY” button, press this button, it illuminates green to show it’s activated, and you can complete additional drying to your carpets. Due to the great design, it is super easy to clean the SMARTWASH once you’ve completed cleaning. With a separate, cleaning solution tank, water tank, and dirty water/recovery tank, you can pour the unused cleaning solution back into its original container and rinse out all the tanks. It is extremely hard to remove the brushes on any carpet cleaner I have used however the SMARTWASH’s removable nozzle can be removed in one easy step and you can access the dual brushes that lift out easily making the cleaning of the brushes and the nozzle a breeze. The attachments for cleaning furniture are exceptional. The 8-foot hose attaches simply to the port on the lower end of the upright part of the SMARTWASH and there is a variety of attachments. The SMARTWASH’s handle, called a Spot Chaser Pretreat Wand, has its own small cleaning solution tank and takes 2 AAA batteries, you can add a shot of warm cleaning solution for tough spots. Neat feature! Very good job of cleaning our area carpets and cloth furniture, and many nice features. Very impressive carpet cleaner.

I've used different carpet cleaners in the past and this one sets itself apart (for the better) in a few ways that I noticed right away. 1. The tank capacity is enough that I don't need to refill as frequently and can get a job done on less than a tank of fresh water where with my other full size cleaner, I had to refill it. 2. Don't underestimate the benefit of not having to hold down a button to release or vacuum up water. Just push forward and the solution is released, pull back and it's vacuumed up. The 'dry only' button is also a great benefit to go over again and pick up any remaining water. 3. The hose attachment is also works very well. I found that it had powerful suction and did well on carpeted stairs. It's not permanently attached to the unit, so it's not in the way when not used. 4. The ability to pretreat with solution is nice. It's a battery powered sprayer built into the handle and is a handy addition. 5. Amazingly for me, as my other full size unit did not have this, one can actually clean the entire dirty water tank and not have to rely on putting clean water into a small hole and draining through the small hole. The whole dirty water tank is open to clean and that was really helpful to me. 6. The connections are quick and easy. 7. And oh yea, I feel that it did an EXCELLENT job of cleaning not only pet messes, but also regular Carolina clay dirt on a berber carpet!

I used this for a few different problem areas. Some stains were older than others. I was very excited that on some of the older stains it worked great! Some not so much. Which I am not lowering my rating for. I didn’t expect it to get rid of every stain. The process for set up was easy. Not bulky or too heavy for use. I did find my self going over a spot quite a few times to get the access water. It worked ok on my couch. I had a few stains to get rid of. For the most part this has worked like other carpet cleaners at least for me. I like all the different attachments. I have a dog and children and spots tend to happen frequently so this cleaner is good to have on hand. Easily stored, easy to use. If you get the stain right away it works great! And the cleaning solution leaves a nice smell. I only give it 3 stars because it didn’t seem any different from other carpet cleaners I have used.

I have cleaned 4 rooms so far and continue to be impressed. We have 2 dogs and the cleaner is excellent. This is light weight but is a big cleaner. It’s not going to fit into small spaces. You would need the hand tool for that which by the way has a nice long extension hose. I consider it a postive though because with the dual brushes you can cover alot of ground fast. The forward motion to wash and backward motion to dry is so nice. It would be impossible to go back to a traditional cleaner with a standard trigger. The stain gun sprayer is cool also and yes it makes a moderately good squirt gun. The star of the show for me was the ability to clean the machine. Many cleaners do well on the floor but then the nightmare of breaking it down to clean it sets in. They did an outstanding job of designing this to be hassle free especially the rollers which snap in with easy to remove brackets. Overall it’s a high quality machine. I already plan on buying one for my mom. There probably isn’t even a need for reviews as this will sell itself no doubt especially if you can see hands on in a Best Buy how easy this is to take apart to clean and maintain.

Cleans my carpets well. Pretty easy to use, the hardest thing is moving stuff out of the way. Auto mix of soap and water. Has clear containers for soap, clean water, and dirty return for easy emptying and refilling. Handle removes for pretreating spots. Comes with trial size bottles of soap and pretreat solution. I also got a half gallon size soap container with mine so it should last awhile. Also comes with a hose and attachment for upholstery or stairs. Other attachments are supposed to be available separately but at present are few from Hoover's website. I have a cat which normally is very well behaved but sheds constantly. This cleaner gets pet hair up well. Also in this time of covid 19 this will help you keep your house clean and safer. May not work as well as rental machines I've used in the past but is a lot more convenient and you don't have to worry about where else it's been. Vacuum first with your regular vac to get your carpet cleaner. Also has a dry only function for additional drying after use.

WOW! I have a large older rug (15+ years). It's looking faded and worn out. I haven't replaced it because I have a 9 1/2 year old dog. She spends most of her time indoors on it. I thought I'd give the Smartwash Pet Compete a try. It was like magic. The rug looks like new. The colors are vibrant. The purple/mauve color is back. Can I give the Smartwash more stars?? I used the spot treater - I have no idea what the spots were or how old they were but they are gone. It was easy to use and worked way beyond any expectations I could have had for this old rug. I even rubbed the non cleaned section around with my hand to be sure the difference wasn't simply the way the carpet was brushed. I ran the Smartwash in the same area twice, the first time you could see the dirt being extracted. The second time hardly anything. This is a once and done machine. It truly is like magic!

Tops any previous carpet cleaners I've borrowed

I have borrowed/rented a few different cleaner machines in the past and I am so glad to have gotten this Hoover SmartWash. I have tried a Bissell ProHeat 2x and a Rug Doctor Wide Track (like the ones you can rent from hardware stores) and this Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete Automatic Carpet Cleaner tops them both! Assembly wasn't hard to figure out on my own. I was a little curious where to install the hose with the Pet Tool so I finally gave up and referenced the manual. The manual isn't very good. Especially the "Getting to Know Your Hoover…" page. On the left hand side, it has a non-numbered list of features. On the right hand side of the page, there are two figures that are only labeled with numbers. So there is no way of telling which part of the figure is which without counting down the left hand list. The front top bin is for clean water. Twist the stopper knob at the top to remove and fill up with clean water, then twist the stopper knob back on and drop the bin back on the front top of the unit. The solution tank is on the rear and lifts off easily. Flip it upside down and unscrew the top to allow you to add in the cleaning solution. The system comes with a large jug of cleaning solution. It's already pre-mixed, so no additional work is needed. I cleared out one of my rooms and vacuumed twice as I have a cat whose hair gets practically woven into the carpet strands. My carpet is dense and thick. I released the handle and filled it with pre-treat solution and started to attack my trouble spots that had set-in stains. The handle contains 2 AAA batteries and an initial use pull tab. These batteries power the pump that is controlled by a button on top of the handle. When you press the button, there is a slight delay, but a thin steady stream is released to let you paint your stains away. The included pre-treat formula does a decent job. After 30 minutes of soaking, there were light lines through the stain where I sprayed. The actions of operating the Hoover SmartWash system is very much like an older vacuum, there is a handle release on the right hand side and the power button on the left side. Once the handle is released and the handle drops about 15 degrees, the brush rollers engage. Rolling the unit forward starts the wash cycle, which includes spraying the cleaning solution. Rolling the unit in reverse stops wash cycle and leaves it in the dry cycle. There is a button behind the clean water bin and to the left of the handle for "Dry Only" operation. Pressing this button prevents the wash cycle from spraying any more water until you press the button again. The dry operation is always running, the wash cycle just adds the mixture of clean water and the cleaning solution and sprays down your carpet. Other carpet cleaners spray on command by a trigger handle. So this Hoover system, by most accounts, will be easier to operate. But again, I have dense and thick carpet so I prefer to control the spray at the start in order to pretreat the whole room before starting to dry. To get the best performance of this Hoover SmartWash system and really for any carpet cleaner is to go slow. First, it gives the brush head a chance to work deep into the carpet. Second, the surface area for the suction is very narrow. By going too fast, the vacuum won't have a chance to pull the soiled liquid from the carpet. One great feature of the Hoover SmartWash cleaner is the clear suction path on the unit head. As you pass over your treated area, you can watch the soiled liquid pulled through. I used this as a gauge to how fast I should be working. If I see mostly liquid, I need to slow down, if I see a slow movement of suds and a small stream of liquid I know I can speed up. It was satisfying to me to see dirty water or off-white suds through this window. The front bottom bin holds the soiled water. There is a float valve in the system to help signal when to dispose of the soiled water. You'll hear the change in operating tone of the vacuum when it is full. Then you'll need to shut off the machine to pull off the bin, remove the top and dump the soiled liquid. With my carpet, the best method I worked out was to work the room in sections. My first pass was a quick one to lay down the spray and pull back quickly so the machine didn't have a chance to pull up all the water. Then come back to the beginning of the room section moving the Hoover slower to let the brushes do their work and the vacuum to draw up as much liquid as possible. Then work the section a third time with "Dry Only" engaged and going over the section slowly. By the time I was done, the carpet would be just slightly damp. I found that in 2 days, the carpet was completely dry. Your results may vary. I did try to treat some spots with the Pet tool. The Pet tool has a trigger to release cleaning solution. There are dozens of rubber nubs on the bottom of the Pet Tool to help you work out stains. The front edge of the tool has a similar narrow vacuum to pull out most of the soiled liquid. Overall, I've been very impressed with this Hoover Smartwash cleaner, it pulled out several stains from my first room. These stains have been left by my kids or my cat for the past year. I'm actually looking forward to working through the rest of the carpeted rooms of the house. I'm also interested in the other accessory tools (Stair, Crevice and Upholstery) that didn't come with this system.

PACKAGING: The cleaner is packaged well, but it is a shame Hoover must use a lot of Styrofoam for interior cushioning. I note this only because Styrofoam is not recyclable in my area. However, I am aware that manufacturers cannot yet find an equally efficient product to replace it, and until they do, it seems to be the “cushion” of choice if we consumers want our products delivered intact. ASSEMBLY: The equipment is easy to assemble and snaps together well in about 5 minutes. The 3-language user manual is large enough to read and understand. One annoying flaw is that the “Getting to Know Your, etc.” page There is an identification graphic on which key parts are numbered. However, the accompanying list is unnumbered so there is no way to link the illustration to its parts list. Strange and unhelpful. ACCESSORIES: The carpet cleaner comes with just about everything one might need, different tanks, accessory hose, “antimicrobial pet tool,” mesh storage bag, and sample cleaning solutions, etc. Optional accessories include crevice, upholstery, and stair tools which must be purchased separately. QUALITY: The dominant material is, of course, plastic. However, it seems sturdy and the parts that snap together do so with a solid sound and notable click. Overall, it has a solid, comforting feel. Key function parts are labeled, and there is even a small screen that changes from WASH to DRY automatically. Disassembly for cleaning is straightforward and easy. While I cannot speak to the cleaner’s longevity, based on what I have observed, it’s well-made. CLEANING: Cleaning carpets is why one would by this. Instructions for doing so are clear and easy to follow. I have a golden retriever who, while not accident prone, is messy. He like to chew on ice (allowed) and other things (usually not) on his favorite carpet. This was my first test challenge. I followed the instructions and vacuumed the carpet thoroughly. Then I turned on the cleaner. It automatically goes into CLEAN mode when pushed forward and into DRY mode when pulled back. After a few swipes the carpet was notably clean. Very impressive. It comes with a “Spot Chaser” that also serves as the push handle for the main unit. I initially thought it was a gimmick. However, when I noticed a couple of spots that had not cleaned as well as the rest, a couple of squirts (with a specific spot treatment, included) and another swipe and they were gone. Both included samples of cleaner and spot pre-treat work well. There is a strong orientation towards pet-related cleanup in the packaging and manual. I did not try the antimicrobial accessory, but could not see any reason it would not work well on pet stains. If I were to again raise a puppy, I would not want to be without this cleaner. As I did not have any of the optional accessories, I did not try to use the accessory hose other than to see how it connected. Again, easy and effortless. MISC.: I have used several other carpet cleaners and based on those experiences I was expecting a lot of noise. Not so. The sound was on par with a vacuum. Again, impressive. Cleanup was a snap, quite literally. The parts come off easily with well-marked handles or releases. It took about the same time to clean everything on the machine as it did to assemble it. In sum, I was pleased and impressed with this cleaner. My expectations for an at-home carpet cleaner were far exceeded.

Don’t waste your money. I’ve had this cleaner for 2 months and the brushes stopped. Hoover has not been easy to deal with. Go to a Costco or Sam’s club and buy a cleaner from there. At least you don’t need to spend extra money to have the store refund you or replace the item. Because of course it will brake after the store return policy ends.

I bought one in November and returned in December due a malfunction with the gears that rotate the brushes. I exchanged it for an identical machine and had the same failure in February. Obviously there is a defect with this model. I will try to return it for a different brand. Hopefully best buy will support me.

Pros: Light and easy to maneuver Separate tanks for clean/dirty/solution Easy to fill and clean Spot wand Cons: No wash only option Woks great for pet messes but just OK for toddler messes. Easily picked up dirt and leaves the carpet damp instead of wet. Heats fast and doesn't use too much solution for cleaning. The spot wand uses a bit more solution than I expected but it's wireless and super easy to use. The convenience and ease of use and cleaning makes this a great choice for just about anyone.

Having previously worked for a carpet cleaning company for a couple of years, I must say this cleaner does a really good job. The first thing I noticed about it is how heavy it is, which makes me think it is very well-built and durable. It does have a carry handle thankfully, because you wouldn't want to pick it up by the removable stick handle that works as the spot cleaner. This vacuum is VERY easy to use- just add water, solution and then vacuum as normal. I was very impressed by how clean the carpet looks when finished. No hint of pet smell remained, either, although my little dog doesn't really leave a strong odor around anyway. The removable spot cleaner is very quick and handy to use for "accidents". For stairs and hard to reach areas there is a flexible hose attachment that is very handy. It also works for upholstery, but I have not tried that. My only slight critiques would be the power cord has to be manually wrapped instead of a push-button retraction, and the cleaner is pretty heavy (although as stated above it is also a good thing). Overall, I think this cleaner gives a better clean than store rental cleaners and almost as good of a clean as a professional truck-mounted system. *One important suggestion is to regular vacuum the area first before using the cleaner. Otherwise you will have wet "clods" form that are hard for the cleaner to pick up*

Definitely one of the best carpet cleaners I've owned! It managed to remove some old stains that others couldn't!!! Assembly was quick and easy, honestly, it took longer to take it out of the package than it did to assemble and start using. I found it extremely easy to use. Simply add water and cleaning solution to the separate reservoirs and start cleaning. No premixing required! I really liked that it automatically switches from wash to dry by moving the unit back and forth. It really was as easy to use as a standard vacuum cleaner. The clean and dirty water tanks are separate and have a large capacity, reducing the trips to the sink to empty and refill. I was pleasantly surprised that the cover on the dirty water tank is was removable so clean up was very easy. This unit also features a "Spot Chaser" handle for quick pretreatment of tough stains. The only downside of this is it uses a lot of solution, so make sure you have extra on hand, especially if you have pets. This unit, unfortunately, does not have a dedicated rinse feature, which is something I typically look for in a carpet cleaner. Pros: Large capacity reservoirs Easy to assemble Easy to clean No premix Strong Extraction Fast Dry time Con: No dedicated rinse feature

We had a spot on our carpet that our dog had an accident on a few weeks ago. We did what we could to clean it up, but we did not have this vacuum at the time. Once the vacuum arrived, I thought this would be the ultimate test. Can it pick up spots that have been sitting there for a few weeks? Well, it did. That’s impressive. I think that’s in part because of the excellent cleaning solution which Hoover offers for this vacuum. However, it goes beyond the spots are pets visibly leave behind. It’s also the stuff they bring in from outside slowly. The stuff you don’t notice. If you use this vacuum over your entire carpet, you will see what I’m talking about. That’s what truly blew me away from this product. Its ability to pull everything out of your carpet, leaving it soft and plush for your feet. My only issue with this product is kind of a double edge sword. The vacuum has SO many features. These many features requires many parts. All these parts need to fit perfectly into where they belong. Unfortunately, lots of these are fluid holding tanks. Now, the really gross one that holds all the stuff it pulls out the nasty stuff is very well sealed and secured. However, some of the other ones like the treater tank leaked on mine since the first try. I think its because I did not secure it perfectly. Even after really trying to learn how to insert this tank properly, I would have a couple times where it leaks. I think that’s the nature of having so many parts and features. Maybe not all of them will work perfectly. Even with that drawback, this vacuum does its job and does it very well. Just live with a leak now and then and you have an excellent pet spot treater, and an even better all around carpet cleaner.

Honestly one of the best carpet cleaners that I have owned. I have a large dog that sheds black fur all year round, and it's a nightmare to clean. This Hoover is easy to use and maintain. The sensor for wash/dry is a neat perk, and I love that you can click the "dry" function to remain on as long as you need it. I also appreciate that this appliance is easy to clean before I store it in the utility closet.

    The evolution of carpet cleaners!

I've owned many carpet cleaners over my life, and this is certainly a different carpet. Aimed at making it easier to use, it operates just like a vacuum - push forward and water/solution dispenses, pull back and it extracts the water. Ingenious. I like it - however sometimes I think it uses too much solution and leaves the carpet soapy. To resolve this, you can out just a little solution into the solution container and fill the rest with water. It's up to you how much you use, but it comes out at a preset level. I have a lab and a cat, so I have plenty of pet hair in the house. I vacuumed the carpet first, then used the cleaner and it had no problem dealing with the hair the vacuum left behind. The brushes come out easily for cleaning - just in case you find more hair in them than you expect. Super easy to assemble, easy and fun to operate and the dry-only mode helps you get more of the water out of the carpet than most cleaners. The double brush design works great but is also mesmerizing to look at! I'm happy with this cleaning and will use it for all the room in the house.
