It does take non-included batteries, but those batteries have lasted for an extended time. The set itself takes up a good bit of space, but the launcher is sturdy and the track takes a beating while staying together. One note - not all Hot Wheels cars will work with the loops and launcher. They need to be weighted enough to make the loops, but not too heavy to not enter the loops fast enough.
