The first half of the season kind of dragged and was a bit slow, but it still had its great moments and it tied up some loose ends thankfully. Right after the atrocious rhyming episode, the show got back to its roots and was once again hilarious and charming all at once. The second half really made up for anything I didn't enjoy in the first half. In fact, it may contain some of the best episodes over these past three seasons. The highly emotional "How Your Mother Met Me" had me choked up moreso than any other episode in the show's long run. If you aren't at the brink of tears during her monologue, you don't have a heart. Bottom line.
I was so excited for Ted last night, I really was. The entire first 40 or so minutes of the episode did so much to tie up loose ends and give us an engaging picture of Ted and the Mother's life as well as that of the gang. I didn't really care either way that Barney and Robin split. Sure, they'd built up the wedding for so long you thought they'd end up together. It *is* a major slap in the face of their long romantic arc, but I can let it go because I didn't really care about them being together anyways. It was always Ted's story.
The only problem with this finale is the last three minutes. The story should have ended with, "And that, kids, is how I met your mother." With the promise that was set forth by the writers on day one, that was the exact point at which it should have ended. I'm a writer (and I'm not being arrogant about it. I'm unpublished as of right now, but I've studied storytelling for pretty much my entire life) and they broke the cardinal rule with this rug they decided to rip out from under us. You can't deny the payoff you promised at the beginning of the story. They gave it to us, yes, but it was made all at once unimportant when not even two minutes after the final reveal, he goes back to his ex. It doesn't matter if you liked it and were able to let it slide. It's a fact that they destroyed the entire story by undermining it will the final "twist". It is an insult to the grand story arc they built up for 9 years on "being in the right place at the right time" or "how everything in your life is leading to something". They just couldn't leave well enough alone. It would not have been tragic if she'd died and Ted was left alone with his kids. It would have thoroughly reinforced the strength of why this story had to be told to his children, to honor his wife and show them how much he loved her. The last three minutes make Tracy seem like a conciliation prize until he could get Robin who was ultimately selfish and didn't deserve a person like Ted.
By having Ted continue on after that and going back to Robin, they essentially washed away all the emotional build up of their meeting. It's fine that she died. What isn't fine is Ted's seeming ambivalence to the occurance. We only see him begin to cry when mentioning the word "Mother" in one of their flash-forwards in an episode 8 or so weeks ago. At the time I had no idea what it was about, most of us didn't (I'd assumed maybe his mother had died or something. I never really thought at that time that Tracy might have died). Now we know he was crying because she was sick when they were in Farhampton for their anniversary. That's the only scent of sadness about her death.
The writers botched it. The promise was to show us Ted's grand journey of how he came to meet the woman of his dreams and boy was she. Tracy is Ted's perfect mate. Cristin M. did an outstanding job of making her so loveable and so much of what Ted wanted, I immediately bought in. And when they meet under that umbrella and piece together all those very key moments throughout this lesson for his children, it gave me chills and nearly made me cry. I was so happy for them. Radnor's performance with her in the flash-forwards, especially in the last episode, also made me believe she really was his perfect soul mate. Never in the show's history had Ted grabbed a woman and kissed her as passionately as he did her, even Robin. They did an amazing job commiting to this performance as a couple.
And then it's gone in one fell swoop. Some people say they "liked it," Whatever. You can like it if you want, lie to yourself about it, whatever gets you through the day. But the very fact of the matter is the writers ruined, lessened the value of, and basically utterly destroyed all that build up to why Ted and the MOTHER'S meeting was magical. Whether or not she died, she should have been the only woman who could fill that void. The "I let go of you finally, Robin" episode, "Sunrise," was a lie in the end.
In the end, the entire show was a lie. For me it will always end with the perfect line, "And that, kids, is how I met your mother." It could have been the *perfect* finale if they'd just had the guts to end it there and give viewers some credit.
EDIT: So I'm sure we've all now heard they have an alternate and alltogether happier ending that will be featured on the DVD for this season and the boxed set. I guess, at least, there is some solace to those of us who didn't enjoy the telling as it stands now. My only problem with this is that it's still the "alternate" ending, meaning it's meant as a kind of poultice for the unhappy segment of their fanbase and it will always feel like the afterthought, in a way. Still, I guess it's better than nothing that they at least acknowledge the misstep in some small way. Maybe if I view that ending enough times I can make myself forget the old one.

While I have enjoyed this show, and was somewhat sad to see it end, all goods things must end. The reason for four stars rather than five is the content of the program, not the product itself. The final season dragged out quite a few parts of the story line longer than they needed to, and felt like they skimped out on the finale. One bonus was the alternate scenes for the series finale were included in this standalone set, which previously had been advertised as only included with the HIMYM Complete Series box set. Since I already owned the previous seasons, I really didn't want to spend that much money just for a single special feature, and fortunately, I didn't have to.

I wouldn't spoil the the series finally but the dvd has an alternative ending to the series that didn't make me feel any better. Over all the show does a good job of wrapping it all up. I think I after so many season I was expecting a more epic love story but you can only do so much with 23 episodes. If you're a fan who has all the other seasons I say go for it if you have seen it here and there want to see how the whole thing plays out get the box set for the 120 which comes with other little bonuses.

The final season of HIMYM has an interesting premise - the whole thing takes place during the weekend of Barney and Robin's wedding! Flashbacks (and flash-forwards) galore give the story some additional depth and room for comedy. We finally get to meet the series' titular mother, and learn what happens to her, to Ted, and to the rest of the gang. While not the show's best season, it has its high points and ties things up in the end. Here's a hint: some shippers will be very happy!

The final season of the show was definitely not the best-it gets kind of old how much takes place in Farhampton waiting for Robin and Barney's wedding, but the ending will make me cry everytime I see it. The special features are great, except that it doesn't make it clear which one of the deleted scenes, if any, is the "Alternate Ending", but I did love how Josh Radnor said that the writers ended the show the way they had told him they would at the beginning.

The transfer quality and the extras included in this series ending season are very good. There's even an "alternate" ending to the final episode. As for the actual content of the show, the writing was a bit uneven and they seemed determined to bid a final farewell to every trope they created from previous seasons (slap bets, the Playbook, etc.), though with mixed results.

I enjoyed the final season, but not quite as much as others. It was nice to see how they tied the whole story together with the hints that were put in place throughout previous seasons. The special features are great and gives an answer to most questions that are on every fan's mind. After watching them, I wanted to start the series over and see if I could pick up any hints leading to the finale.

I have watched How I Met Your Mother from the beginning, it has always been entertaining and I loved the characters, this season was just as funny as the rest, I was a little disappointed how rushed it seemed once Ted met the mother but it's a television show and they can't always make people happy. If you are a fan of the show you wI'll love this season!

We got a little annoyed with taking an entire season to cover a weekend while watching the show as it aired, but now that we're able to watch several episodes in a row on the DVD set, it is flowing along well.
For those who were bothered by the way the show ended, there is an alternate ending provided. I personally preferred the original ending since it brought the show full circle.

This has always been one of my favorite shows. The last season was not one of the best, but it was still quality TV. A lot of people were very unhappy about the ending of the series. I thought it was a tad disappointing, but I didn't hate it. There is an alternate ending as a special feature in the set.

Season 9 was an okay season, even though everyone knows it was kinda forced since Season 8 should of been the last one.
The alternate ending should of been the one they aired on tv. However if they did show the del café scene with Ted and Robin, then the original ending would of been more bearable for those who hated it haha.

There are very few comedy television series that are in the same league as HIMYM. All fans waited for the big reveal - and are treated to an alternate ending that some will find legen-wait for it - dary!
The 24 season 9 episodes were very entertaining - can't wait to see them again and again !

My husband and I really like watching this series together. I went to purchase the final series on a sale day and the stores computer wasn't working so they wrote me an old fashion note and they honored the price when I came back on release date. Very Satisfied with their service and the price.

A few months ago we bought seasons 1-8 to start watching since we never had time to see it all on TV. I really like purchasing the entire season and watching it at my leisure. So needed to cap off our collection with this final set of DVDs. It's also so easy buying through Best Buy online.

The alternate ending takes the sting out of the original ending for those that didn't like it. Looks great alongside the other 8 seasons, even if the packaging isn't all similar in design (if you have the first run of season 1-3 and season 4 on blu ray, anyway).

We bought this season because it completes our set. Although this season received mixed reviews, I still really enjoyed it. The cast had such great chemistry. I definitely miss this show week after week, but it lives on in syndication and dvd. Enjoy!

Watching this season as it unfolded was disappointing. After getting the DVDs and binge watching, it is so much easier to appreciate the final season for what it was... A season long story that had more background on "the mother" than it appeared when these episodes aired.
