    Decent and upgrade-able budget laptop

We purchased this laptop for our granddaughter for her school work as the requirements were not off the charts. This laptop meets all of her needs for her school work and goes beyond that capability. You will find a lot of information online saying you are not able to upgrade this laptop, but that is incorrect. Regardless of what you might see online, there are 2 RAM slots and we upgraded this laptop with an extra stick of DDR4 8GM RAM for a total of 12GB of RAM, which improved the performance greatly. Some may not be happy with only 128GB of storage, but since the harddrive is a PCIe SSD, there is an empty spot inside the laptop where you can add another 3.5" SSD, you will just need to buy the ribbon cable for it: "HP Envy 17 6017B0421501 6017B0421601 DW17 Hard Disk Drive Flex Cable Connector". The extra RAM is only $30, the ribbon cable is $10 and you can get an extra SSD for about $30. While the original setup was good enough for light work, with the extra storage and RAM, this is now still a sub $300 laptop with WAY better performance.

I just set up my new HP Laptop, and so far very impressed. Speed is quick, set up is easy. I only do standard household excel spreadsheets, photos, Netflix, some gaming, etc. so my needs are pretty basic. I did opt to buy the separate MS Office package and just install it rather than go for MS office 365 subscription, I didn’t think I needed all the extras that it offered and did not want to renew every year. I preferred to purchase once and own it on my machine. Very please with the purchase.

Respectable Inexpensive Laptop w/Option to Upgrade

As others have written, this is a respectable laptop with a few upgrade options available, specifically adding additional memory and/or an additional SSD. I chose to add PNY 8GB DDR4 2400MHz Notebook Memory - (MN8GSD42400) to the existing 4 GB and a 250 GB SSD I had on hand to the empty drive bay, supplementing the existing 128 GB. The SSD required a Hard Disk Connector with Cable, part number 6017B0421501 (8 bucks from ebay). Removing the back cover is hardest part: 2 visible screws at the front, plus some hidden screws under the two rubber strips which can be carefully peeled off then replaced. Once screws are removed, use guitar pick or credit card to pry off the back cover (from the keyboard side). See pics for parts locations.

IM glad I found this laptop as I’m working from home and my Mac stopped working. I needed a laptop to continue working from home . This laptop was so reasonably priced so I was skeptical at first if it would meet my needs. Surprisingly it has exceeded my expectations. I’m so happy I found it and bought it. I can’t believe I paid less than $300 including 2 day shipping.

I know nothing about computers, I just knew I needed one to remote into my work desktop and for my class turned online and it works great!! I suppose it’s more than I wanted to spend but it’s well worth it. Battery life is great and the laptop itself feels sturdy.

This has everything my wife needed for work purposes. It is very fast, and light weight. The Solid State Drive is a bit small, but more than enough for her needs.

Bought my daughter this laptop for Christmas since she love to always play on my desktop computer. It’s sleek, clean, and quality is outstanding for the price I paid (bought during Christmas season, so it was on sale). It came with all sorts of anti virus plans already built in it, so she’s good to go for the year.

Worked great for what I needed! The keys don’t light up though so that was hard in the evenings with the lights off but other than that it did everything else I needed.

excellent laptop for linux, no problem install

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

ubuntu installed without a hitch, never even booted this machine into windows and was so confident linux would work flawlessly did not keep a copy of windows for recovery. this hp machine is an excellent, fast linux box. i wish hp would bring back the pentium gold version though, which runs slower but is much cooler and needs no cooling fan. (why are the chip makers slow-walking low power chip development?) folks, if you have not used a modern linux version you simply must try linux because it is much faster than windows, it is better maintained than windows, internet security is far and away better than in windows, and updates take minutes to complete rather than the hours windows takes. linux has probably already won the 'battle of the OS's'. perhaps the only people who will end up using windows are the same folks who still have an aol account. first timer? it can be helpful to have a linux friend help with your first install. 1) turn on legacy mode in the bios 2) your first account will be the admin account. later, after the install, you create the user accounts. 3) in version 19 the wifi driver is automatically installed, but in version 18.04 the realtek 8723 wifi needs an additional driver download, search 'd723' at ubuntu.com and follow the instructions you issue in the 'terminal'.

Due to the pandemic, I purchased this laptop so that I could start working from home. This laptop is lightweight and beautiful; setting up the laptop was a breeze; the keys on the keyboard are comfortable to maneuver; the trackpad is a bit sensitive at times (however, I still am getting used to maneuvering without a mouse). The major issue that I had with this laptop was reconfiguring the clock; for some reason, the clock was set to the correct time zone but still was off by a few hours; thankfully, I did a Google search and found an article that gave me directions to fix the issue. Overall, I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for an affordable laptop that performs well. It is perfect for me!

Efficent laptop great for basic needs

I got this laptop because I had been researching ones that are the best money can buy under $350. This one has consistently good reviews and is upgrade-able if you want some performance changes down the road. I got this laptop in a rush so I'd be able to work from home during covid-19 and I have very basic needs- mostly light web browsing, remote access to my office desktop, LOTS of excel/data entry and word docs. It fills my needs without any issue. I can see it being a little on the slower side (vs lightning speed)- especially if you don't give it time to start up. I have found that if I log in and give it 5-10 minutes (enough to get my coffee) the laptop performs much better. It does default to Windows-S mode which I wasn't a fan of- but thankfully you can change this setting. I will probably increase the memory to 8 or 12 GB in the near future, but for now this works pretty good. I'm uncertain if the colors on the screen are accurate (but I get migraines so my color/brightness settings are usually very different). Overall I think this is a great little laptop at a solid price that can change for your needs if it doesn't perform to your standards. It isn't super fast with the default settings, and I don't play computer games so I don't know how well it performs in that way- but for basic needs this is a solid choice. This laptop is recommended at 4-5 stars in most places, I'd recommend it if this description syncs with your needs.

This is an ok computer, I had a geek friend set mine up and he had a few problems getting it to change from S Mode to regular windows 10. Best Buy Geeks when he called them kept telling him it didn't have Smode, which it does. So if you run any programs that aren't bought from the Microsoft store they won't run on Smode ad you will need to convert. Once this was done my computer is running smooth.

I’m on a laptop all day long for 8+ hours a day at work. Last thing I thought that I wanted was another laptop I have a home. So finally after about 10+ years I decided might not be a bad idea to have an extra computer in addition to other electronic devices at home. This is a basic laptop and it’s great for what I needed to do which is basic stuff, internet surfing, checking bank balances, etc. Actually what I told the sales rep at Best Buy was that I needed a basic, basic, basic laptop to do really basic, basic things. It was not pushy in trying to oversell me into something else that really wasn’t what I needed. I’ve had it for approximately four weeks and it seems to be exactly what I needed.

This laptop is extremely portable and feels good in the hands. The amd chipset is powerful enough just to accomplish basic task with finesse. I upgraded mine to 8gb ram for better performance. If you’re looking for a super affordable and portable laptop for college or basic browsing this is a go to. If you can get past the sub 1080 panel, cheap feeling keys, and plastic then this is a a amazing deal for the price! I always recommend a minimum of 8gbs of ram in 2019 so if you can upgrade that’s even better but it’s not necessary.
