Great Laptop! Caps lock is just annoying.

I purchased this chrome book about a month ago. As a tenth grade high school student, my intention for this laptop was to use it to do school work, send emails, watch videos, and just use it as my first laptop of my own that I will hopefully be able to bring with me to college in a few years. For this purpose, I am very pleased with this product. One of my favorite features of this device is the ability to access all of the google apps so easily and being able to use the google play store to download other apps that I am familiar with, as a smart phone user. My first phone was an Android so I know my way around the google play store, so it was very exciting for me to be able to download some of my favorite apps on my chrome book. Some of which, like the TED app and google photos have versions that take up the whole screen, as designed for chrome books. Some of which like Instagram and color switch only take up a cell phone sized area on the computer, but still work fine. Since this is a CHROME book, everything is run through your google account, which is really nice since with my personal google account and my school google account, I can access everything from my documents to my photos on any device from anywhere from just signing in to my google account. I also really like the touchscreen feature. Even though this laptop does not have the ability to go into tablet mode, it allows you to go back and forth from using the track pad to touching the screen using your finger. I have also purchased a stylus to use with this device for things like virtual white boards like awwapp.com which I have found helpful. The battery life on this is great. Since I usually only use this device for light work for maybe an hour or two each day, I can go several days on a single charge. However, in just the month of having my computer, I have noticed that the percentage of battery life is slightly more rapidly declining as it once was. I also talked to a friend who has a similar HP touch screen chrome book and she said that after a year of having hers, the battery life went from 12 hours to about an hour, so that is a little concerning. One of my favorite things about this computer is how much you can personalize it. I have it so my background changes from different art graphics daily, and there are lots of options for that. It also allows you to change chrome themes which is fun. The webcam on this chrome book, well, exists. It would be fine for a quick skype call if this was the only device I had available, but with a choice, I would much rather use my iphone 6s for a video call as its camera is much better. Now on to the most annoying thing about this laptop, which isn't really that annoying, but this device is so awesome that I have high standards when it comes to its features. To put caps lock on or off, you have to hold down the search key (which is in the same place that a regular caps lock key is on a standard keyboard) and press alt. The keyboard it's self is really nice, click-y, and easy to type on overall, but as a touch typer who has never used this kind of keyboard before, it takes some getting used to. If you press just the search key alone by accident, it brings up this annoying pop up from the bottom of the screen that you can search google directly from, which I find pointless, because you can get the same feature from just touching/ clicking on the circle in the lower left hand corner of your screen. Also there is always an annoying little notification that comes up when I put the caps lock on that just needs to go away. Any way, I digress. This is a great computer for light, everyday use and I think it was well worth its price. Hope this review was helpful!

Not sure of where some of the criticism comes from

First off, this review is for Model 14-CA061DX (with the touch screen). It seems that some reviews for similar models get mixed up. I haven't had the Chromebook very long but I'm not seeing the same main issues others have stated. Some complaints don't seem to be related to the product's functionality either. So to get to it: 1) Operating System: This is not Windows. Don't expect it to act like Windows or Microsoft products running the same on the laptop. Word works fine. There is a learning curve if you have never used a Chromebook. 2) Printing: I get the frustration but it works perfectly IF you have a Google Cloud Print Ready printer. I'm familiar with Chromebooks as my wife has one and we ended up buying a new printer. Our old Brother laser was awesome but also was 7-8 years old and it was not compatible with Chrome OS. Overall the "classic" printers are very rough if not incapable to connect to from Chrome. Check to see if your older printer works with Chrome before you buy. 3) Apps: Zero issues with running any apps. Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Amazon Prime flicks, etc. Everything runs fine. I suspect some issues being more of your wireless network if you're getting flickering (not to rule out a bad screen though). We get blurred pictures or lines on all devices occasionally as we stream everything. I do wish we could connect via Ethernet when at my desk all day. 4) Keyboard: Well I'm used to a cheap keyboard as I'm still using an Acer Aspire One (6 years old). Time will tell with the HP Chromebook but it seems sturdy enough. If the cursor "just randomly moves" your palm may be coming in contact with the mouse pad. You can disable that and use a wireless mouse. No Delete or Caps Lock key is weird to get used to. 5) Battery: This one I'll come back to in a couple months to see how it goes. The way I read some of the complaints almost sounds like the reviewers got a refurbished laptop and that can be problematic. There's a reason a laptop got returned and chances are it can't be good. That said one thing that really irked me with the sales person is when he tried to sell me on the extended warranty. He kept pushing that the battery could fail in less than a year. I didn't buy his sales pitch but was more remarkable is he said that new batteries could cost up to $300. A quick search online and I didn't find an HP Chromebook battery more than $99. Most are $39-69. If you're not comfortable changing a battery then the warranty might be worth it to you. Other than that: * Not having an HDMI port is a little weird but I didn't use mine much except when traveling. I'd connect my laptop to a hotel TV to watch a movie. * I wasn't looking for a touch screen because I'm not a fan of fingerprints all over the screen and this one shows them easily. * The screen looks fine and I like the size. I was originally going to get an 11 but happy I got the 14. * Getting 32 GB drive was a must. I will be adding a Micro SD as well. Overall, for $180 I'll be happy with it as long as the battery lasts longer than a year ;-)

This chromebook has been amazing! And I've given it quite a test trial before writing a review so I could be accurate in my opinion. I have to admit that I'm new to the Chromebook/laptop idea and have a home office so I log MANY hours on my desktop PC. But being able to take my work elsewhere, pay bills electronically while on vacation (which my iPad handles VERY differently via the mobile site and isn't nearly as user-friendly for that purpose), and carry this Chromebook around the house when I want to discuss an email or something with our kids has been priceless! I didn't realize how often I would find myself carrying it up to our bedroom and finishing up projects before falling asleep, so I do wish it had backlit keys but I'll keep that in mind for future purposes...it's definitely not a feature that warrants taking away any stars from my rating as this wasn't advertised as one of the features. I just didn't know how much I would have used it. The battery on this thing is unbelievable! For as often as I use it, it holds a charge for a very long time and I love the touchscreen option. I've mostly gotten used to the touchpad as well (versus having a mouse) and must admit it's very simple to use and has just the right sensitivity. The screen size is perfect for me, I was easily able to find a hard skin to protect it as well as a neoprene case to offer further protection when I'm not using it. Love it!

I purchased this for a multitude of reasons, chiefly for its versatility of interaction. This is my daughter's first 'official' computer so, I thought it best to give her a wide variety of ways with which to engage the device. She is well acquainted with the touchscreen, trackpad use, and voice assistant but, the same was not true for the keyboard and mouse. I felt, at the time, this computer would give her a great crash course and I was right. The machine is quick and lively in its operations, it has ample storage space especially with the 100GB for a year free add-on, it's secure from invasive malcontents, and it's lightweight. To top off everything, it has been an excellent at-home compliment for her schoolwork; Her teacher and classmates use Chromebooks and Google Classroom for the vast majority of their lessons. Now if I could only get her to listen when I say to turn the volume down.

    1. The finger pad is hard to use because the scroll does not work very well at all. Lucky we already had a wireless mouse for it. 2. Trying to get a printer to connect or set up is not a very easy process. First we were told that the laptop was compatible with any wireless printer. This was not the case and we had to go back to Bestbuy to purchase a new printer. When trying to install the new HP printer on our HP chromebook a window popped up stating that it was not compatible with the laptop so after much searching and reading I was finally able to, after few hours, sync the printer and was able to get the printer to print off of a wireless command. It floors me that a hp printer and a hp laptop still has difficulty being compatible with each other. Might want to give your employees a little more training on what your products are capable of doing before they send people home with false hopes.

This HP 14 Chromebook has been the biggest disappointment in an electronics purchase, that I have ever made in my 58 years on this earth. Right from the start it would freeze up and run slower than molasses. It is so frustratingly slow when it doesn't freeze up, that it is totally worthless. Tech support was no help whatsoever. Do yourself a favor and purchase a non HP laptop instead. I'll never waste my money on another chromebook from any manufacturer or another HP product of any kind. These perform so poorly, they should have never been released to the public. Perhaps only a few are bad and many perform well, but why take the chance, if their quality control lets this crap get by to be sold to consumers. I've included a photo of the HP 14 Chromebook in the trash, as that has been the most satisfaction I've gotten from it.

I had to buy a laptop for graduate study after not owning one in over 13 years. I wanted something that was reasonably priced but yet provides the functionality I needed. I primarily needed the laptop to check school emails, view the weekly class syllabus, and completing assignments via Google Docs/Spreadsheet. This product did just that. The monitor is also a touchscreen, so that's another perk of it although I barely use it. The only issue I would have with this product is the speaker. I'll be on a video-conferencing call with colleagues, and it will cut off the sound, or it'll have this awful "static' sound. Usually, I'll just need to restart the app, and then it'll work fine. I haven't contacted HP yet, but I hope they'll be able to troubleshoot that problem. Otherwise, for the price that I purchased this product which was about $205 (after best buy rewards), I'd say it's a reasonably well-functioning laptop.

The HP Chromebook 14 has a slimmer design with a mat texture, which helps us get more in the school bag. The mat finish helps with a better grip. micro SD slot, 2 USB slots, Bluetooth, 1/8th inch headphone port, TOUCH SCREEN, and I really love that there are charge ports on both sides of the unit! Uses the newest micro usb charge system to be the new standard, Which means faster charging. We have easily gone 2 and 3 full school days and homework nights on 1 charge, wow! Built in mouse pad is HP's time tested and crazy sensitive awesomeness! If i was to make any improvements, I wish the keys were back lit, but that's rare to come by when talking long battery life. Definitely didn't break the bank on this one. Would buy it again.

I was unhappy that Google stopped servicing their older Chromebooks. I was an original purchaser when they first emerged in , as I recall, about 2011. However, I did decide to upgrade to a newer model. This one offered a lot of bang for the buck. The SD memory slot will take 64 gig, 128 gig, and/or 256 gig and this supplements the 32 gig on the computer itself. The quality of "casting" to Chromecast TV is unbelievably clear & good. The computer is fast and better still, when I close the lid and reopen my work or pending research is still there. I can print anything I want to archive to .pdf format. The VERY BEST FEATURE is the BATTERY LIFE. Far, far longer than you would guess -- 9 to 14 hours in my usage.

To really optimize the android app experience you need a touch screen. Overall you also need at least a 14 in. screen to not feel squeezed in your visual workspace so this is perfect size too. I also like the exterior color scheme althogh others like a shiny metalic finish for aesthetic purposes. I have only two minor cons and that is the screen is somewhat lacking in vivid colors and it has only a micro SD slot whereas I prefer the full size one but both of these are minor compared to the price which is the best for all these features that optimize the android and chrome browser extentions that this device offers. You will not be sorry you got this chromebook is your appreciate a balanced and value oriented price.

Our four-year old Acer Chromebook 14's battery was swelling and breaking the case apart (and for that reason, I'll never buy another Acer Chromebook!), so we were on an emergency mission to replace THAT Chromebook with another workhorse. The 5th Gen HP Chromebook 14 checked nearly all of the boxes that we were looking for...sturdy construction, plenty of RAM and storage, and a touchscreen...which was, really, icing on the cake. (It can also run Google's Project Crostini/Linux if you're into that!) This HP Chromebook doesn't disappoint -- true, our demands are not that great at home (e.g., media consumption, online banking, online shopping, etc.) but the HP Chromebook 14 more than satisfies in terms of performance. So very happy with this emergency replacement...though you should consider it as a non-emergency contender for all-around, everyday, killer Chromebook.

This was purchased to replace a Samsung tablet that finally cracked after 3 years with no protection for the device. The Chromebook is plastic and feels somewhat cheap, the keyboard was not user-friendly to me but I'm not the one using it regularly. The touch screen is the redeeming feature! Seems to run smoothly and fast, set up was simple and it will serve its purpose but can't attest to how 4GB of memory works! It was on sale for $219 and went on sale again to $199 within the 3 weeks of purchase. Best Buy agreed to refund the difference but I expected nothing less - they're always my top choice for electronics, phones, speakers, etc. It's mainly used for checking emails, researching, searching for items, movie trailers, etc. and suits those needs perfectly.

This is my first Chromebook and, although there's a bit of a learning curve (coming from Linux and Windows), I soon got the hang of it. I love being able to be up and running and surfing the web in a matter of seconds. Started using Google Docs and Sheets and am pleasantly surprised with their usuability. The fact that Android apps are available via Google Play makes this even more compelling (and familiar, since I have an Android phone). I had a glitch trying to redeem the 100 GB of Google Drive space, but I was able to resolve it by contacting Google support. This is a great value, especially when it's on sale.

I grew tired of dragging my heavy laptop around the few times a year I was away from my desktop to do things that I am only doing online. I researched the screen sized (wanted something a little larger), memory, touchscreen (needed or not), etc. This is a much cheaper alternative to getting a high end tablet with a keyboard and slightly more expensive than the smaller chromebooks out there (I needed a larger screen to see everything). I have been very happy with my choice thus far and though getting used to doing everything "chrome", I've found this to be a nice replacement for an aging laptop.

I wasn't expecting a computer that was going to wow me, but wow this thing kind of just sucks. I returned it after two days because the screen was flickering like an 10 year old monitor even sitting on an easy flat surface. That was the nail in the coffin on a couple days of being just generally "whelmed" with the machine. The processor is nothing to write home about, but I expect a machine that loads Chrome OS with at least a bit more speed than this. The screen, before it failed has an odd texture to it, smudges immediately, and has such bad color and resolution I had to squint to look at it even in the dark. Just don't buy this laptop, please.

I was talked into buying a chromebook over a low model laptop. This one was the "latest and greatest" just came out this week one. Not sure I'm sold on the Chromebook, but that's my problem not the Chromebooks problem. I knew the limitations before purchasing. This thing is a year old and is as fast as it was the day i brought it home. It's great for what it is. Only issue is the device reboots randomly and I haven't been able to figure it out. At first I researched it but couldn't figure it out. I wiped it, updated it, but not sute what it is. I'm guessing it's a driver issue, but it reboots so quick I don't mind.

This is a nice chromebook, feels sturdy, keyboard and touch pad work fine. The display is a touch screen, but the viewing angles are limited, to get a good quality picture you need to adjust the screen angle, once aligned you get a decent picture. It comes with google play so you can install apps like facebook or gmail. I am very pleased with the performance, it never feels slow or laggy. You can work offline and create documents, etc.. I think this makes an excellent alternative to a regular windows laptop for users that want to browse the web, read/write e-mail and do some document creation.

This turned out to be a premier buy. my mother wanted a laptop so she could write again and I wanted her to have a device that would work very similar telephone and tablets. In this case the Chromebook turned out to be a perfect choice. This particular model was one of the least expensive ones that had a touch screen. As usual, the employees at Best buy were more than helpful obtaining this product. I highly recommend this particular model.

Chrome book is a great laptop!--especially considering the price of the product! It does take some adjusting and knowing a few shortcut keys that are not required on a traditional laptop such as HP, but it does work out great! However, I don't give this laptop a 5 Star because 1) the speaker is pretty low 2) I can't download Microsoft Office programs. However, you can use the online versions or the Microsoft applications available in the play store, but those applications don't have the same--or as many functionalities in the software.
