Replaced Win10 to address hacking of elderly user

Excellent device for our needs. This is going to replace an older Windows 10 desktop device used by my elderly father-in-law who's been the target of social engineering hackers 3 times over the past 9 months. IMO Chromebooks and ChromeOS is the very best way to begin to eliminate this problem. This device is perfect for him as 99% of his computer use is reading/responding to email and browsing the Web. Device startup is almost instantaneous, battery life is adequate for his use. We also moved him from an @comcast.net email account to a @gmail.com account which dramatically reduced the amount of spam he was receiving. So if you're situation is the same I would highly recommend migrating to the Google/Gmail account that you will need to create to use this device. When he's in his home office he prefers to use a large monitor, full keyboard, and house that he has at his desk so we purchased an adapter that the power, monitor, and wireless keyboard+mouse are plugged into (see pic). This makes it simple for him to attach those devices when he's in his office.

    Great Internals, Lackluster Screen

Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.

This Chromebook has some great internals, but I'm very disappointed by the screen. Pros: -The design of this Chromebook is lovely, the dual tones of the white lid and silver body is stunning. -The keys are satisfying to type on, responsive, and plenty clacky--which is always a plus for me as a writer, it's satisfying to hear progress being made. -The speakers are loud, not necessarily the best, but have plenty of volume. -The laptop has got some heft to it, which can either be a good thing or bad depend on your preference. I personally was surprised by how much it weighed when I took it out of the box -It's very easy and smooth to convert it into tablet or tent mode -Bluetooth connections are quick and powerful -It's fast -Chrome OS is pretty great Cons: -The screen. It looks washed out without any depths to hues and the viewing angles are TERRIBLE. Tip your screen back even slightly and suddenly you can't see anything. I felt like I had to have the screen tipped forward more than what was comfortable to even see what tab I was using. -The only way I've found to slightly improve this issue is to put the screen on full brightness, which is kind of like staring into the sun and will drain the battery faster. -The screen is also SUPER REFLECTIVE, any light source will make it even harder to see. I found myself working on my book in a dark room just to see the screen better--which is not an ideal setup for many reasons, one of which being my book is kind of spooky and I scare easily. XD -I'm not writing home about watching Netflix and YouTube on this Chromebook. The washed out colors make it lackluster, frame rates are frequently dropped, and there was some kind of glitch that caused the video to flicker which made it miserable to use. -The track pad...I don't know what to say. There's just something about it I don't like. Maybe it's the material coating it. Petty, I know, and if that was the only issue I was having, I'd overlook it. Despite how I may have made it sound, this is a good Chromebook, I just don't think it's for me. It costs upwards of $400 (for a poor starving writer, that's a lot of money) and I expected a better screen, but it's being outperformed in almost every way by the Acer Spin 11 I was upgrading from (which you can hopefully see in the comparison photo I added--the Acer is the smaller Chromebook on the left) I will most likely be returning the HP Chromebook and look for something with a screen I don't feel like I'm constantly at odds with.

    Not a bad Chromebook

I purchased this to support my college’s students (I am Director of Online Learning at my college). I’m used to working on high end PC’s and MacBooks. Our college deployed Chromebooks to our students. This is a bit higher end. It’s really not too bad. The touch screen is nice. I loaded a 256GB stick in it. If I need to grab something quick or test out our Lock Down Browser. The monitor isn’t bad. The keyboard is Ok. $400 bucks for a Chromebook is a bit high, but I can’t complain. You won’t be disappointed.

My pride and joy. I love my Lenovo Chromebook-ey baby. Good thing, I chose not to download a "call/text" app. I'd toss the phone, otherwise! Thanks Best Buy!

Useful product for all the basic tasks

This is the first time for me to use a Chromebook. I bought this to use with OBDI2 devices for diagnosing automobile issues. It works well for that, but I'm impressed by the overall capabilities to do many other tasks. This version of Chromebook has a touch screen and converts to a tablet when flipping the screen all the way open. The quality of the screen is only fair to good. It's not super crisp and vibrant, but it meets my needs - being a large touch screen and the text is readable. So far I've been able to perform all the tasks needed - from using the Web, to working in OneNote. I installed Linux to learn more about the OS to round out my skills. It "casts" training videos to my 4K 52" TV using a Chromecast device. This is very useful for keeping up with ever changing technology. If the TV isn't available, using the built-in speakers work perfectly fine and are clear with enough volume to hear recordings with weak sound. Battery life is excellent - about 10 hours. Processing power is good with a 4 core Pentium silver N5000 and 6 GB RAM allows me to have a dozen tabs open with no problems. I would recommend this Chromebook. I would give 5 stars if the screen was a little sharper.

My wife and I each had a Samsung chromebook. The hinges on one of them crapped out (the computer still works but without the hinges it's useless) - off we went to BB to find a new one. Given covid, there wasn't much choice. Fortunately we weren't wedded to Samsung but we definitely wanted another chromebook, which we both love (vs a Windows-based or Apple-based laptop). Overall I'm pleased with this. We also have two HP desktop computers and have had other HP computers in the past, so we were biased towards them. Here are some characteristics and my thoughts: WEIGHT: it's somewhat heavy, but ours never leaves the house. If you're lugging this around test it out in person before committing. BATTERY: Very good. I haven't timed it but I can say with certainty it lasts quite a bit longer than either of the Samsung chromebooks SCREEN QUALITY: Good, maybe just a touch below Samsung's TOUCH SCREEN: This is the reason I gave it 4 stars rather than 5. Compared to the Samsung and compared to any smartphone we've ever had this is not as good. It works well enough in the middle but not at all around the edges. So, for example, if I want to close a tab on the browser, the 'X' is along the top. Touching it repeatedly rarely works so I have to resort to using the cursor. Not awful but it is annoying. MICROPHONE and SPEAKERS: Good. We don't listen to internet music so I can't comment on music quality. We use it for Zoom calls (when we're not wearing headphones) and that seems to be very good.

Great all around, apart from a mediocre screen

Performs well, looks nice and has good build quality, good keyboard, etc. The only complaint I have is that viewing angles on the screen are pretty bad (even by budget Chromebook standards) - worse even than the 2x $200 Chromebooks this replaces (one Lenovo, one Acer). There's a VERY small field of view without distortion. However, it has more powerful internals than most other Chromebooks at the sale price when I purchased, so I guess they had to save money somewhere. Still very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend to anyone considering options, just something to be aware of when comparing options. I also worry about the charger - this style of port (USB type C?) started wearing out within a few months on the Lenovo Chromebook this replaces, and was the reason we ultimately replaced it after just ~15 months of use. Hopefully this one holds up better.

This is my first Google laptop so it's idiosyncrasies was something to get accustomed to, but it's amazing! It's as fast as any work supplied laptop I've used in the past and the touch screen option is fantastic. You can easily turn it into a tablet and it's still slim! I wish it had more than one USB port but I just ordered an extender and that works fine. The screen could be brighter, especially in a well lit room/ office, but it's a small issue that I can get over. Do not hesitate to buy this. You'll love it. Now, if only it came in rose gold, all would be perfect!

The laptop is great, it's already outshining my desktop and I use it more than the desktop every day. The only problem with it is that it comes bundled with this spammy vaporware/whineware. The bundle says that the software will be free for six months, but the day that you install the software it begins demanding payment to continue using it. It doesn't appear to do anything other than demand payment.

Good device for kids with a good sized touch screen. One caveat - this is basically a throw away device if the screen breaks, as it costs about the same to repair it, absent a protection plan. I know because my young daughter foolishly tossed hers across the room in a fit of anger, and now the screen is cracked and no longer functions quite right. Live and learn - guess who gets to work with a broken touchscreen now? (She does)

Being so used to the Windows OS it took me some time to get used to Chrome. But, I have come to love this laptop. Even with just a Pentium processor this is a zippy little machine. This OS is not bloated like others. It's lean and mean but very functional. Even though I gave it "only" 4 stars, (I was seriously considering 5 stars) this is a tremendous value. And I have no complaints at all I still use my other computers for the heavy lifting. But for email, web browsing, and many other activities it works great. Having the ability to run Linux apps is a big plus and has worked flawlessly so far.

I am very happy with the Chromebook overall. It is easy to learn. I often Google a question and find answers to assist my learning. I did experience resolution difficulties with the Facebook app and am using the website instead with no problems. For the Kindle I use the side by side screen like a book. This model does not bluetooth to my printer, but plugging it in to print or scan is not a big issue since I use my Chromebook for personal use only. I use a mouse for Sheets, and you can still use the touch screen with the mouse attached. Very pleased with this purchase!

My daughter loves her computer. She says it is fast and the ability to convert to from a laptop to tablet is great! I’m actually happy with the value of this computer. I made sure to option for the Pentium processor instead of the Celeron although I had to wait to have it delivered at the store. I think it was worth the wait. The appearance of the computer is really nice I would recommend getting a cover right away. This is not a gaming computer or anything like that but for an elementary school kid this is plenty. They can access google docs, slides, and practice their typing skills. I would recommend this over a tablet.

I know this is going to sound silly but I had no idea HP made a chrome book. I thought chromebook was a brand. Lol. I have an HP envy laptop that I love But I needed an inexpensive laptop To use excel and word. Haha! I get it now that chromebook only uses apps. I returned this purchase because I need it for business. However I did set up before I learned what a chromebook is used for. The appearance of the computer is sleek. It is easy set up. The only thing I didn’t like is the lighting on the screen as it was dim.

What a gorgeous, sleek, fantastically functional device. This Chromebook has set me free from the "UGH I hate my laptop" era and catapulted me into modern times. I LOVE this Chromebook - everything is so simple to do! - I LOVE the design and color (steely white) and insanely beautiful keyboard. I love how my fingers glide over the keys while resting by the mousepad. 5 Stars for sure. OH: and the price, ridiculously affordable!!
