I've had the privilege of owning several HP products in the past, beginning with the iconic HP 1100 laser printer in 1990. I still have it, and it works like it did the day it was brand new, although I no longer use it as my main laser printer. That job has been taken over by another HP laserjet. I say all that to say that I have also owned several HP monitors over the years. I have a multi-monitor setup and all of the monitors are HP brand. So I was excited to be able to add this one to my setup.
I was a bit shocked when the delivery driver dropped it off at the house. The box was huge. Yes, the HP Series 5 VA LED FHD 100Hz Monitor is a 31.5 inch monitor, but I guess I didn't realize just how large 31.5 inches really is. But just as surprising is just how light it is for being a 31.5” monitor. And one thing I absolutely love about HP products is the built-in carrying handle on their boxes. You can carry them around just like a piece of luggage. I might add just how useful these boxes can be later on for carrying around all types of things. In other words, you don’t have to throw these boxes away, but you can save them for use later. The boxes are sturdy, and by reusing them, we can go a good way in lightening our footprint on the environment.
Unpacking and setting up the monitor required no help from the quick-start guide. It took longer to make a place for it on my tabletop than it did to assemble it and hook it up. Now this might be due to the fact I have assembled other HP monitors. For being over 31 inches, the HP Series 5 is surprisingly light due to it being an LED monitor, so there was no awkward having to hold it, or balancing it to keep it from falling due to its weight. The hardest part was putting on the base, which was super easy, so that just goes to show you how easy it is to assemble.
What I really like about this monitor is that it is ready to go right out of the box. That is, once you put on the base and hook up the cables, its ready to use. You don’t have to go through a lot of adjustments to get it ready for whichever computer you decide to hook it up to. Of course, there are personal preference adjustments you can make, but like I said, it is ready to go once it is hooked up. HP suggests downloading the HP monitor app.
So much for the setting up of the HP Series 5…how good is it? As with any product, the final judgment rests in how well it does what it is supposed to do. I first connected the monitor to an older laptop. Let me interject here about the silky-smooth tilt function of the HP! With one effortless push or pull of the finger, the monitor tilts forward or backward with ease! The monitor comes with both VGA and HDMI outputs, so it is usable with computers that don’t have HDMI or USB inputs. The images on the HP monitor were grainy, and the lettering wasn’t anywhere near as crisp as I thought it should be. But then, it was an older computer, and that was about the best I was going to get with it. In other words, the resolution had nothing to do with the HP, but the source. I then connected it to a computer I have had less than a year, and I was stunned at the difference. I don’t want to seem over-laudatory here, but there’s just something about seeing such high resolution on a larger scale that makes your jaw drop! The colors were rich and deep, the text is so sharp and crisp. There are no blurry boundary lines, no bleeding of colors. And the black color? For some reason it is difficult to reproduce black colors on monitors…they just typically don’t hit the mark. But just like the other two HP monitors I own, the Series 5 hit a bullseye!
When using video-editing software, even under high-stress environments, the monitor outdid itself! There was absolutely no pixelating or glitching. The same with the several games I tried out.
I could go on and on, but as I stated earlier, the proof comes out when a product does (or in this case, exceeds) what it is supposed to do. The built-in eye saver technology prevents the eye strain so often associated with long-term exposure to monitors. After several hours, the only fatigue I felt was the normal sitting-in-one-place-for-hours fatigue, when the body begins to rebel. My eyes were still ready for more. The colors of the display are outstanding, as is the refresh rate (at 100Hz) allows seamless and pleasurable viewing and immersion, no matter if its gaming or simply browsing the web. And I can’t get by without mentioning how great the built-in speakers sound. For built-in speakers, they are remarkably loud, clean, and distortion-free. I would have liked for them to have a tad more volume, but again, they rock for built-ins.
Is the HP Series 5, 31.5” FHD the best monitor on the market, especially at this price point? That’s like asking what is the best car on the market, or the best house. But for me, the answer is absolutely yes. It is an LED FHD monitor that allows a thrilling experience under even the most taxing needs. It has multiple monitor capabilities, and multiple inputs. This is my new “bestie.”
The bottom line is would I recommend THIS HP monitor to my friends, or my family? Yes, yes I would. And in fact, I already have. HP, just keep up the great work. You guys continue to show the rest of the tech world just what a great company you really are! Thanks!!

Touching the HDMI cable causes disconnect that takes forever to fix up until you touch it again. Not a big thing if you don’t need to unplug it, but if you keep switching, might not be the best choice.

Arrived on time and easy to set up and works great! CHANGE my opinion on Best Buy. I had not used them in years but I have purchased 4 large items recently and service and product were excellent.

It’s a nice monitor but it broke after 4 months. I brought it in July, and today it short circuited. At first I thought something in my house was rumbling and when I came back to the monitor, there’s a black strip on the left side.

Not a fan on this specific monitor. I didn’t look closely at the DPI before buying. While price on sale was good and screen is large, I find that I am magnifying spreadsheets to clearly see numbers. My fault for not checking dpi. You may have different experience so best to view it person. With the larger screen, I can still have more information visible.

This salesperson didn't tell me I needed speakers. I called Best Buy, and they tried to fix the problem over the phone. No one asked me if I had speakers. I could not hear anything. Salesperson did not know2 product well.

Great HP computer, I was looking for a replacement of my old All in one Lenovo when I found this powerful machine at Best Buy. What I like the most is the quietness of this wonderful PC.
