    Great and cheap

Got this on a great sale. Things to note: 1 - Almost the entire construction is plastic. I've noticed no metal or durable materials on the drive. 2 - There's no status/activity light that I've noticed. Would have been nice, but cheap is cheap and activity lights are really just there for show. 3 - Has a plastic push button on the side used to extend the USB connection. 4 - Since construction is primarily plastic, if something happen to the drive while plugged into a USB port there's a chance it could break the drive rather than bend the plug, as I've happen seen metal drives. Just be cautious (which should go without saying when it comes to electronics gear, anyway). I like the flash drive, it works and does what I need it to do. Would have liked a more durable version, but this price was good enough to go for something a little less damage-proof. I'd probably buy another and recommend it to friends. Don't know how it's going to last over extended uses, but I usually don't have sky-high hopes when it comes to flash media. Hopefully it'll carry through for a few years. At this low price, it would be worth it to me if it only lasted a 2 or 3 years. *NOTE* For those that are constantly disappointed by the formatted size not being the advertised size, READ THIS! Manufacturers calculate storage size differently than your computer or other software. Manufacturers will take the bulk size in bytes (b) or kilobytes (kb) and dive by an even factor of 10, such as 1,000 kb = 1 megabyte (mb). Software, on the other hand, will often calculate size in the *correct* way by dividing/multiplying by a factor of 1024, so 1024 kb = 1 mb. This accounts for the size differences noted. Math: Manufacturer: 32 GB = 32,000 MB = 32,000,000 KB = 32,000,000,000 B Software/Consumer: 32,000,000,000 B = 31,250,000 KB = 30,517.58 MB = 29.80 GB A manufacturer total of 32.00 GB verses a consumer usable 29.80 GB. It's not necessarily a lie, but it's definitely not as honest as it could be. I've yet to see a disk-media manufacturer use consumer-side, usable-space math. Just remember this difference when you notice that you're "missing" storage space.

I purchased this flash drive on a whim using my RewardZone points. I wasn't ready to shell-out the extra cash for a 64GB flash drive and 16GB wasn't enough for me, so this seemed to be the best choice at the time. I own one PC (Windows XP Professional SP3), one Macbook Pro (OSX Snow Leopard) and I use a Windows 7 (x64) PC at work, so I use this flash drive on all of these systems and have never experienced any kind of compatibility issues. The flash drive was immediately recognized/mounted on all three systems with no problems whatsoever. Formatting the drive was a breeze (since I wanted it formatted with a different file system than what it originally shipped with...which I BELIEVE was the standard FAT file system). Additionally, I seem to be averaging a 6.30MB/second data transfer rate...which is GREAT in my opinion. The plastic casing is exactly that...it's plastic, so don't expect it be feel indestructible like many of the aluminum/stainless steel-cased flash drives that are available on the market. The retractable USB head is a HUGE bonus, adding to the overall small design of the product. I couldn't be happier and would highly recommend this to anyone looking for great value for the price and a lot of portable storage space! --AA

32 GB HP Flash Drive Horror Story

I had high hopes for this HP product, as their brand has a respectable reputation. This 32 GB HP USB Flash Drive is NOTHING of the sort of a typical HP product. To start, this flash drive is very cheaply made of all plastic. Typically, the USB interface portion of a USB device has a ferrule made of aluminum with gold circuit connectors. That is what caused the problem with my brand new, less than 3 months old, Dell laptop. I was needing to access the data stored on the 32 GB HP USB flash drive. My laptop initially gave me an error that the device was not found, in the fashion that the USB device was unplugged. I attempted to unplug,, then plug the device back in to refresh the connection. I was unable to remove the 32 GB HP USB flash drive from my laptop's USB port. I had left the device plugged into the USB port for a few days, without thinking it would cause a problem. I did not notice any warning about leaving the device plugged in for extended periods of time in the documentation. After much effort, the 32 GB HP USB flash drive broke by accident, ruining both my laptop's USB port and the 32 GB HP USB flash drive. It broke where the plastic ferrule that envelops the connector circuit board. The 32 GB HP USB flash drive is VERY cheaply made, and poorly designed. It is worse than useless, it can cause damage to your equipment.

Cheap design leads to increased risk of data loss

This comes from an HP employee who was being loyal by buying this HP product. Because of the nearly entirely plastic design, this leads to potential damage. As in my case, I accidentally bumped this thumbdrive while it was connected to my laptop and heard a "cracking" sound. My worst fears were confirmed when no PC would recognize the device. I even took the drive apart very carefully and attempted to match up the gold plated strips with various USB ports but no luck; just received a message saying the device was not recognized. Conclusion: if you have important data to store, please consider a much more sturdy design because this particular thumbdrive is very sensitive. Tip: also, be sure that your data on your thumbdrive is also backed up somewhere else on a regular basis. In my case, I had about a week's worth of updated data that had not been backed up to my main external hard drive and lost all of it. Lesson learned: do not store important data on a thumbdrive. I hope this review is helpful to you.

I purchased this drive about 6 months ago and even without an activity light I had been very happy with it. Fast read/write access, great price when I bought it since it was on sale at the time. I had to go out and buy a new one though and it was NOT another HP. Most flash drives have a metal encased plug however this one is all plastic. I used it for work which required daily use and recently I started having problems getting PC's to recognize it. Seems the plastic plug has worn just enough to make connections difficult. I could still make it work by holding it in place but ... well that's why I bought a replacement.

Good size, but a bit slow

Personally I like it... it may be slightly less strong as others have said, but for a flash drive, you have to be careful and realize the dern things all have a fatal flaw of 'leverage', and I've snapped off metal versions or broken the internals of the computer because the drive was TOO tough. It's a flash drive, so treat it with care. Mine's worked fine, just a bit slow... I liked it when I got it on sale, but the $69 normal price is a bit high for me.

Avoid if you value your data

Used once, moved data onto the stick, and before even removing the stick, the data was corrupted. The stick refused to be reformatted, claiming to be "write protected". I have used USB devices to data transfer THOUSANDS of times and never had an issue like this. Needless to say, I would NOT recommend anyone risk buying this obviously defective, flimsily constructed device.

Great for the Price, Change from FAT

I picked up this thumbdrive on sale to move large (+ 20 GB) files between PCs. The stock format of this thumbdrive is FAT32. It must be reformatted to either NTFS or exFAT to handle files larger than 4 GB. The case is entirely plastic, very light, but has not shown itself to be fragile. The USB A connector is retractable. There is a whole to connect a lanyard.

I am a novice when it comes to gadgets & accessories and this is the first time that I transferred files (docs & pics) from a computer. I was pleased that it did not give me a hard time doing the transfer. At first, I was hesitant to do it but as I go along with the process, it is easier than I thought with this accessory.

I got this to transfer files and pictures between my computers; home desktop to laptop and work machine. Works great, fast downloads and uploads and with the retractable connector I'm not worried about just dropping it into my laptop bag or slipping it into a pocket when I'm in a hurry.

This is just the perfect size for transferring the movies and TV shows I download from my computer to the PS3 to watch on the TV. It has plenty of space and I have yet to fill it up before I watch everything and download new files.

I bought this 32GB flash drive to perform the system backup on my new HP computer. The alternative was to preform the backup with burning DVDs. I found using this flash drive to be faster and more conveinient than burning DVDs.

All in all, this thing does what it says. It is tough, durable, and, best of all, responsive. If you are an on-the-go business traveler like myself, you can be sure this little guy will take the abuse.
