32 GB HP Flash Drive Horror Story

I had high hopes for this HP product, as their brand has a respectable reputation. This 32 GB HP USB Flash Drive is NOTHING of the sort of a typical HP product. To start, this flash drive is very cheaply made of all plastic. Typically, the USB interface portion of a USB device has a ferrule made of aluminum with gold circuit connectors. That is what caused the problem with my brand new, less than 3 months old, Dell laptop. I was needing to access the data stored on the 32 GB HP USB flash drive. My laptop initially gave me an error that the device was not found, in the fashion that the USB device was unplugged. I attempted to unplug,, then plug the device back in to refresh the connection. I was unable to remove the 32 GB HP USB flash drive from my laptop's USB port. I had left the device plugged into the USB port for a few days, without thinking it would cause a problem. I did not notice any warning about leaving the device plugged in for extended periods of time in the documentation. After much effort, the 32 GB HP USB flash drive broke by accident, ruining both my laptop's USB port and the 32 GB HP USB flash drive. It broke where the plastic ferrule that envelops the connector circuit board. The 32 GB HP USB flash drive is VERY cheaply made, and poorly designed. It is worse than useless, it can cause damage to your equipment.

This comes from an HP employee who was being loyal by buying this HP product. Because of the nearly entirely plastic design, this leads to potential damage. As in my case, I accidentally bumped this thumbdrive while it was connected to my laptop and heard a "cracking" sound. My worst fears were confirmed when no PC would recognize the device. I even took the drive apart very carefully and attempted to match up the gold plated strips with various USB ports but no luck; just received a message saying the device was not recognized. Conclusion: if you have important data to store, please consider a much more sturdy design because this particular thumbdrive is very sensitive. Tip: also, be sure that your data on your thumbdrive is also backed up somewhere else on a regular basis. In my case, I had about a week's worth of updated data that had not been backed up to my main external hard drive and lost all of it. Lesson learned: do not store important data on a thumbdrive. I hope this review is helpful to you.

Used once, moved data onto the stick, and before even removing the stick, the data was corrupted. The stick refused to be reformatted, claiming to be "write protected". I have used USB devices to data transfer THOUSANDS of times and never had an issue like this. Needless to say, I would NOT recommend anyone risk buying this obviously defective, flimsily constructed device.
