Love this printer, cost effective only thing that I am not happy with is the amount of ink per cartridge

I would give it a 5 but I am not a fan of the 2 cartridge ink system and I have to keep connecting the scanner to my computer.

I am not usually an HP printer fan (due to 3 in 1 color cartridge vs. Separate color cartridge. BUT, the size and sheet feed for Photo quality printing hooked me.

My biggest concern with these printers is the short life of the ink cartridges that they require. These printers r expensive to use.

I got this printer to replace my HP Photo Smart 6850 printer which I loved. But the part that attaches to the black ink cartridge broke and is non replaceable so the printer is dead. This printer was ok to set up (set up manually) except that the printer carriage kept showing a jam error. Took about half an hour to figure out how to fix it via HP website and several website locations to find the exact instructions, but once found they were easy to understand, both graphics and instructions. I printed about 18 5x7 color photos before the color sample ink cartridge ran out. The same error message about the printer carriage jam appeared again when I installed the new cartridges ( I installed a new black one to match), but I did the same fix and it worked. The color photos on glossy photo paper were ok, although the color was a bit off (too red), but when making color pictures onto regular paper there were obvious white lines at regular intervals throughout the picture . It printed black and white text and color text fine. I think this printer is originally $179.99 - $199.99, on sale for $129.99, and I got an additional 15% off which brought it down to about $110 and change before tax. Now that I know it's not "perfect" set up out the box, has the printer carriage /ink cartridge jam error and has the white lines though out the picture when printed on regular paper, I don't think I would pay more than $90 before tax for it.

The ink runs out way too quickly

I loved everything about this printer until I realized how quickly the ink runs out. I even bought the XL cartridge and it barely lasted one week with moderate printing. Is this normal?

      Hey Elin,

I'm so sorry to hear that the ink runs out after only a week! We're certainly committed to providing a much more economical experience with our printers, so I can imagine how disappointing this has been. To that end, I'd like to see how I can help going forward.

First, I do have a few suggestions to try for lowering ink consumption. To start, I recommend using the printer's draft mode, as this can often improve ink usage. Following that, you could also set the printer to print black and white only.

If you find you're still using quite a bit, Instant Ink might just be worth a try. Many customers like our available plans, as they're based on how many pages you print monthly. If your printer usage is minimal, Instant Ink also offers a subscription plan that allows you to print 15 pages a month for free. For more details, you can visit this link: HPinstantink.com

If you have any other questions or concerns, please remember you can reach out to us for support anytime. We're always happy to help. You can contact us directly via your preferred method at this link: hp.com/contactHP

Nice printer works well and has many features. No issues with the printer so far. The only downfall with HP printers is after a few years they make changes to the models or no longer carry certain ink cartridges forcing customers to buy newer models.

I always purchase HP printers. They are sturdy and dependable. I didn't give it 5 stars because the color cartridge dries up if you don't print in color often.

I don't like the ink cartridge plan. I don't like the idea that HP is keeping track of how many copies I make each month; and, that they charge me according to how many copies I've made. It's too much like 'Big Brother' keeping track of me.

Is too expensive; function screen too small

    Posted
    John

As the title says, the ink cartridge lasts a very short time making printing extremely expensive. The screen for functions is so small and the key are not sensitive enough to touch making it difficult to carry out tasks, especially when in a hurry. IF you have a vision problem, this unit is definitely not for you.

      Hi John,

It's unfortunate to hear that you've not had the experience you expected to with the printer. We always hold ourselves to a high standard of reliability with our printers, so I want to assure you that we'll be here to help with this in whatever way we can.

First, I'd really quickly like to address your concern about ink usage. Given the ink lasts for a shorter time than expected, you might consider using the draft mode and black and white settings to save ink. If you find the printer's still using quite a bit, Instant Ink might just be worth a try. Many customers like our available plans. They're based on how many pages you print monthly, ultimately saving you money: HPinstantink.com

I do enjoy using this printer especially for big projects since I am a teacher. The cartridges can get pricey bit I signed up for HP ink and I get cartridges at home and HP sends me them when I get low. It is much cheaper this way versus buying them when they run out. Setting up the printer is really easy and I love that it is wifi.

I purchased this printer for my wife when her original HP printer gave up the ghost and found it to be everything we wanted in a all-in-one printer. I ordered one for myself to replace the b/w print only laser printer. Price was not much different than the cost of a cartridge for the laser. Price of ink cartridges for the 7800 is less than the original HP printer.

Purchased after reading mainly good reviews only to get the printer home and find out this printer is a nightmare. It keeps prompting us on setup to (use the setup cartridges) which we did and it still will not work We contacted HP and they sent us more Ink cartridges and it says the same thing. We did some research and found out this is a common problem with this printer. We are returning this printer and will stay away from HP products in the future.

      Hey there,

I'm so sorry to hear that you've experienced these complications with your printer's cartridges. More so, it's disappointing to hear that the issue wasn't resolved with those replacement cartridges. Though you mentioned returning the printer, I'd still like to address these issues and help remedy this for you, just in case.

The setup cartridges are indeed needed for setting up the printer, but the error you're receiving is unfortunately out of the ordinary and likely related to a hardware fault. With that said, I recommend reaching out to us one more time so we can facilitate a replacement. You can call us at +1 800-474-6836 to do so. To expedite this process, I recommend gathering this information before the call:
      - Model number
      - Serial number
      - Your location
      - Your case number (from previous contact with support)

    Problematic printer from the start.

The black ink cartridge that came with the printer could not be detected. It appears that others have had the same problem when researching for a solution online. No solution when following all the troubleshooting tips from the HP website, HP forum, and over the phone. Updated the printer was not a solution to the problem either.

Just purchased this printer last night have been unsuccessful in setting up as the screen displays an error message "Do not use SETUP cartridges". From searching the HP Forum this appears to be a recurring issue. I called technical support twice and was actually hung up on the last time I called. Will be returning this printer and buying a different brand!
