Good printer, but lots of strings attached

This is a nice printer. It looks sleek and stylish (per my wife) and it has great connectivity and options. It has great features like mobile fax and the pages print clean and crisp. It has a nice big document feeder and the scanner makes good clear images. The printer itself is a great piece of hardware.
HP started with a great product but then they added a bunch of strings. For some people these strings may not be an issue, for others they may be the biggest reason not to get this printer.
The first issue is with setup. You can not get this thing set up and running without their app. This was a huge problem when I tried to set it up. This is because the app disappeared from Google’s play store. I wanted to print something out I needed to set up the printer the app had disappeared from the google play store. It was gone all day, and it came and went over the next few days. I tried next on my work laptop so I could use the windows 10 option, but it required installing an app that I did not have permissions to install. I eventually got the app running on another computer and was able to get the setup complete. However, if you don’t have as many options as I have available you may have been without your brand-new printer for a day or so.
As irritating as it was to get the app downloaded so I could start the setup process, the process itself was pretty slick. It gave step by step instructions that even an child could follow and when it came to alignment it did a great thing where it printed out the test page then had me put it in the scanner for it to analyze things itself and readjust where necessary. This was genius, I still remember the days of printing out page after page and trying to guess if those barely visible yellow lines were really matched up closer in option 1 or 2. Maybe I haven’t purchased enough printers recently, but I hope other companies are doing the same so that gone are the days of world’s second most torturous eye exam.
Once setup was complete the printer appeared on the network and I was able to add it to my work computer without installing the app and everything worked out great so that I could print from nearly any computer attached to my network with little issue.
However, with the setup hiccups I had came my second complaint. The printer comes advertising a free 2 months to their instant ink program (more on the program later) and I wanted to take advantage of it. As I just described, I was having a bit of an issue getting setup going so when I did get it working I did not have my wallet on me which is a requirement for signing up for instant ink. I didn’t want to lose my 2 free months, but it said I had to sign up within 7 days of setting up my printer to be eligible so I figured I must be able to do it later. Well I tried to do it about an hour later and signup was a pain. Their step by step system to get instant ink setup required a code, but the instructions on how to print the code did not work. I went into the Smart app and printed every report possible, and no code. I finally had to go into advanced settings, disable web services, then re-enable web-services, and finally the page would print. From there the rest of the process went smoothly and it knew I had a new computer so it gave me my 2 months free.
Now, more about instant ink. I’m not sure if this program is a rip off or not, but I am leaning toward it is. The idea is that even though you own your own printer, if you sign up for this program you no longer just own the printer and just have to pay for ink and paper, but you have to pay for the greater of every page you print or the pages you “might” print. The price turns out to not be cheap. Its like 5 cents a page for your more realistic plans. That is a bit high in my opinion since if you don’t use it all and don’t use it in rollover, its actually a lot higher than that. They also have set their authentic cartridges so high that it almost doesn’t make sense to buy them. I know there are other places to get cartridges, but the other issue is they have only one cartridge for all the colors of ink. I don’t know how many times in my old inkjet I ran out of only I color (why was it always the cyan?) but at least I only needed to replace that one cartridge. Now, if you run out of cyan you have to throw out all the good ink of the other colors still in the cartridge. This means you are going to blow through ink even faster.
There are a couple of upsides to the program. The first is that the computer will monitor your status and predict when you’ll need more ink and get it ordered for you. No more forgetting about the ink or having to figure out when you’ll need it next. Time will tell how accurate this really is. If you don’t use the computer a lot and the ink dries up, will it know there is a risk and replace it early for you? If you have a surprise project that will take a lot of printing and you run out of ink, what then? You can’t wait 7-10 days for a new cartridge and if you buy your own to get you through will they charge you per page so that you now just double paid? Would they ever reimburse you for the ink you had to buy (I doubt it)? So while this is an upside in my case, I think this requires regular and consistent use. Infrequent and unpredictable uses may end up leaving you in a lurch that you will have to pay extra out of pocket to get through.
The second upside for me is that the have a free option. If you print less than 15 pages a month you can get free ink forever through the program. For me this turns out to be a possibility. I have a solid laser printer that I use regularly that prints for a lot cheaper per page….but its only black and white. When I need color, I really want color, but it happens maybe twice a month and only a few pages each time. I can easily set this printer up as my backup, color only, option and keep under the 15 pages a month and essentially get free ink for life. That is a pretty sweet deal. But for right now I’m enjoying my 2 months free and signed up for a pretty heavy load to really test this printer (although I don’t’ want to waste too much paper so I do still have limits). It says you can change your plan at any time so I’ll downgrade to the free account before my trial expires.
I also did a little testing and I did see that any test pages do not count toward the printing quotas too, so at least you won’t waste money trying to just get the printer working when you’re on their system.
What I have not run into yet is how it counts misprints. If there is a printer feed error or the power glitches or something else that makes a print unusable, will it count as a page or not under instant ink. I’m not sure since I haven’t been able to get it to simulate that situation but maybe someone else will review and find out.
Once this printer has been out for a while longer and the ink market becomes a little more robust we’ll see if instant ink is still a value at all. In the meantime, this is a pretty good printer and may be worth it for someone who really like the instant ink system. If the instant ink system isn’t for you, then you may want to go with a different printer.

Hi there.
I’m sorry to hear that your printer has performed so poorly. Your review is brief, but it’s easy to understand why slow printing, paper jams and then a broken part would be quite a shock with a new device. I want to help you resolve this situation, so I’ll provide a resource and some information I hope will accomplish that.
I can’t tell from your review what caused the problems you describe or what part in the printer broke. I recommend that you contact us directly so we can help you assess the situation and find the best course of action. HP+ printers such as yours come with exclusive concierge support. To call and reach live HP+ experts, visit the following URL and enter your HP+ serial number: - hp.com/plus-help
I'll also mention that HP printers have a one-year warranty from their purchase date that covers hardware as well as ink supplies – and that warranty extends to two years with an HP+ account – so if it comes to that, you might consider making use of it. You can verify the warranty using the following link: - support.hp.com/us-en/checkwarranty
