I had bad experiences with low/mid range AMD mobile processors 8 years ago - so much so that I swore them off and told myself I would only buy Intel machines going forward.
Apparently... lot has changed in 8 years.
I was looking to replace an older Intel i7 machine that was starting to show its age. My requirements weren't too high (I have another machine for more processor demanding work), I just wanted the best value-to-performance mid-range machine for daily use, occasional Creative Cloud work here and there, media editing, etc. HP's Envy seemed to fit into that market segment perfectly (it also happened to be the same line of the machine I was trying to replace, so I was already familiar).
I was stuck between the i5 and i7 models, determined to shun AMD again, but right there in between them was the Ryzen 7 version - which came with more on-board storage than the i5, and cheaper than the i7. A few short reads later through several PC reviews nudged me to give AMD another try. Worst case scenario I'd learn my lesson again and simply exchange it for an Intel machine.
No exchanges necessary, this thing more than meets expectations. I love it. For the past two weeks it's handled everything I've thrown everything at it without as much as a stutter. The only exceptions being some Adobe LR / PS / Premiere workflows that were a bit more intensive than usual and gave the machine a little more than it could chew. It got through them but not without some noticeable resource slowdowns. But then again, Adobe CC is a processing power black hole all on its own and gives machines that are 2X this cost similar troubles. Can't give this laptop fault for this.
The design quality is great, significantly better than my older Envy. It's stylish and sleek, and the screen real estate is very good with a moderate bezel that houses the webcam. The keys feel good though I sort of question the power button placement. It's not a physical switch and actually fooled me for a good minute the first time I went searching for it to turn it on. HP decided to place it in the upper function key row just above the backspace button. Kind of odd to me. I figured that was always going to be one-typo slip away from a mid-typing sleep command, but it hasn't happened yet.
The one thing I will say is the 15.6" is HEAVY. Let be real, you don't really buy 15" laptops for their ease of portability, but this thing's heft is noticeable. Because of that, I don't really see anyone using the convertible function very often. It becomes a hassle, it's just too big and too heavy to consistently use it in tablet mode. If that's a big selling factor for you, you're going to want to look at 13" models instead. This is more of a "find a semi-permanent desk spot for it and leave it there" type of machine.
All in all I'm really impressed with the performance and quality here. Even more so if you can manage to grab it on a weekend sale for $150-200 less - it's an absolute no brainier at that point. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone searching for a new machine in the $700-900 range, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better performer.

HP Envy 360 - AMD Ryzen 7 - OK but not Great

The trackpad is not fit for purpose and requires two hands for clicking and dragging because the pad is hinged at the top and is difficult to impossible to click on dependent where you click. Clicking on the trackpad toward the bottom is fine then gets progressively more difficult toward the top. HP engineers should look at a MacBook Pro for how to design engineer and build a trackpad. The HP Envy is heavy in weight compared to the Lenovo it replaced and my MacBook Pro. The under key light sources are visible from a typical sitting position and distracting. The rubber strips on the bottom of the laptop are beginning to fall off. The anodizing on the screen hinges is beginning to rub off. Overall I'm pretty disappointed in the build quality. I like the design, it's the execution that disappoints. To be fair the issue with the trackpad seems to be an issue with all the windows laptops I test drove and windows laptop buyers deserve better than this crap foisted off on us. The positives, battery life is still really good I can work all day no problem, the screen excellent, the tactile feel of the keyboard very good. The speed of the AMD Ryzen 7 processor is disappointing compared to the antique i5 Intel processor in the Lenovo Thinkpad Genesis laptop the HP was purchased to replace. I did not see a meaningful boost in response with the resource hogging appraisal software I have to use, and may very well be the culprit, your mileage may vary. I would probably recommend a friend check it out if they were looking for a laptop, the price point value is good, its the caveats that hold me back from a full throated endorsement.

Damaged During Assembly

After 10 months of use, I had to pull the cover to clean out the dust that has accumulated inside this laptop. When I opened it, I figured I might as well find out why the wifi doesn't always come back on after sleep and check the connections of the wifi module, and reseat it. When I pulled the fiberglass cover off of the two antenna wires, the #2 antenna came off with it, meaning it was never plugged in.
I put this plug under my microscope, and when this computer was assembled, the #2 wire was jammed on, which damaged the plastic separator causing it to not click into place properly. And this damage results in not being able to plug it at all.
That may have explained why the wifi range of this laptop is far less than any of my other devices.
I went to pull the fans (thankfully you can pull the fans without having to remove the heat pipe) and I noticed on the fan closest to the wifi module, it only has one screw in it. I looked at the missing screw hole, and you can clearly see where a machine (I'm guessing) jammed the screw into the tab, spun it, but never actually installed it.
This may not be the top of the line computer, even when it was just released, but I expect ALL of the items to be assembled correctly and for all fasteners to be included.
I have owned HP Laptops in the past, and they have been great. This one however is not living up to what I come to expect from HP. I wish I would have removed the back cover the day I purchased it, as this would have been IMMEDIATELY returned!

Pros:
Classy understated design
2-in-1 capability
Decent keyboard/touchpad
Reliable fingerprint scanner
Ryzen 4700u (!)
Upgradable WiFi, SSD, and RAM
Great battery life
Cons:
Bad display
Heavy
Fan noise
I came to the 15.6" Envy x360 4700u from a 13.3" Spectre x360 1065-g7 and before that, a dying Surface Pro.
First things: the performance of the 4700u is absolutely phenomenal and the Envy has a revamped cooling solution that keeps it below 85 during load. Also, the integrated graphics performance is on par with a 960m from a few years past for a pretty smooth light gaming experience.
Honestly, the majority of the appeal for this laptop comes from the performance, its 2 in 1 form factor, and (for me) its looks.
On to the bad stuff:
It is kind of heavy, or at least dense. Dell's XPS 15 and the Surface Laptop 3 15" are both noticeably lighter.
For the first few hours while I set it up the fan noise was near unbearable and it seems to have settled into a low but constant hum even when idling. If you are the kind of person very bothered by fan noise you might look for something quieter. It is silent about 50% of the time though.
The display is... workable. I keep it on maximum brightness or at least 80% and it's comfortable to work with, but colors are washed out and inaccurate. Spotify Green looks more like puke, and Netflix Red has become Netflix Orange. If you're looking for a laptop for photo editing or any color intensive work, or otherwise like looking at accurate colors, you should probably steer clear of this specific model,
Final thoughts: while there are serious cons, really it's just a few areas of improvement in a laptop that otherwise is basically an amazing (and only) 4700u 2 in 1 solution. The fans can get loud, but the processor stays really cool. The battery life is on par with the 10th gen Spectre x360, due to AMD's 7nm process using much less power than Intel. And the processor, if you haven't heard, is godlike. Even if you do video editing, photo editing, etc. and are concerned about the display... if you want the most powerful 2-in-1 there is to work faster than near anything else on the market right now, honestly just hook up a color accurate monitor. Laptop displays have always been lacking and when you think about the performance and upgradeability of this laptop it's something I can easily overlook. It feels like HP's sleek take on the ThinkPad, which I love, and it's something you can bring to the office looking very professional instead of potentially "too" cool like the HP Spectre and it's angled edges.
I give this a strong recommendation (4/5) and wholeheartedly recommend this over the weaker Intel version with the following disclaimers:
If you want this exact model with better brightness, color gamut, etc. you can customize a version on the HP online store. It will obviously be more expensive, and it'll take a month or more to get built and shipped to you from Chongqing. But if you are willing to wait, that option is available to you (I wasn't willing to wait). Also, mind that Ryzen 4000 in laptops is very new, and AMD's driver support has historically been worse than Intel's. I think Ryzen 4000 is the turning point where AMD is becoming a serious competitor to Intel again, and I haven't faced any issues yet, but it is something you should know.

I've been trying to find a quiet laptop for several months. I tried an HP Spectre which was beautiful but loud and had a high pitched fan sound (think dentist's drill) that was driving me crazy. I tried a Lenovo C940 which was even louder (though more tolerable because the sound wasn't so high pitched). Finally, I tried this HP Envy. It is by far the fastest and most responsive computer of the bunch. It's noticeably faster just doing every day tasks like web browsing. You'd think the bottleneck for web browsing would be the internet connection but I kid you not, websites feel like they are loading twice as fast on this thing. AMD Ryzen 7! The build quality seems very comparable to the Spectre, which costs twice as much, and unlike the Spectre there is no coil whine that I could hear. Unfortunately, it also fairly loud and the fans are on about half the time with basic web browsing. If the CPU is really working hard then you get a high pitch that sounds similar to the Spectre. The other two notes I'd make are that the screen and speakers are not any better than the computer I'm trying to replace (Acer Aspire E1) which was a $450 computer. Although both are decent I would expect more from a computer that is twice the price. I think it's possible to get one with an upgraded screen though. If you aren't noise sensitive I would definitely recommend this product.

The build quality of the all aluminum chassis is outstanding. It is starting to rival the Spectre line. Everything about the exterior is stunning.
Upon opening, the layout is quite good, but the power button is in an odd place and the fingerprint sensor replaces a right CTRL key. The keys themselves are excellent. I type about 130 wpm with MX Brown switches. I hit 118 with the Envy, much better than any laptop I have tested.
I don't do benchmark tests often, and so is the case with this little laptop. I will say that it feels every bit as capable as my i7 gaming laptop. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't ship with 16gb of RAM, but it is upgradeable.
The screen is a bit of a letdown, as HP has much better panels available. It is absolutely unusable outdoors. It's fine for browsing, movies, and productivity; even in a bright room. This one flaw will likely cause me to return it, even with so much else to love.
Then there is the size. This is a sleek and svelte as a laptop gets. However, it is still a 15.6. It is completely impractical to use this as a tablet. I think the 13.3" would be ideal, but it is never in stock anywhere.
Finally, would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, with a caveat. This would be an excellent desktop PC replacement with a nice external monitor. It has enough mobility that one could move about with it daily and dock it once home. However, if you do any amount of outdoor computing, the only thing one will see in this screen is a reflection.

HP really hit the nail on the head with this rendition of the Envy line. The build quality and value is exceptional and potentially will hurt HP's own top of the line brand; Spectre. The Envy line is slotted as a mid-tier to upper-tier laptop. This is a relatively decent sized 15.6" 2 in 1 laptop. HP has shrunken the screen bezel and overall size of the laptop compared to the previous version. The all-aluminum chassis is appealing and nice to the touch. But the stars of the show are the processor and potential RAM. The Ryzen 7 4700U processor and integrated Radeon graphics makes every performance aspect faster. Compared to my Surface Pro 7 Intel 10th Gen i7 with Iris Plus Graphics, this Envy smokes it in every test and real world application. Frame rates in light gaming is a big bump of 10-20 additional fps. The great thing is, there are 2 user upgradable RAM slots up to 32gb!!! That is so rare to find in a 2 in 1 with a thin chassis/bezel.
Now to the not so great part, the horrendous color accuracy on the screen. As mentioned by others about the red color, it applies here too. Reds do not look red, but more like dark orange. No tweaking or adjustment can change this major flaw in the panel hardware. But it is something I can live with using a monitor with it. 250 nit on the screen is barely ok for indoor use, but outdoor is really difficult. Other than that, this would probably be the best bang for the buck for a laptop with good build quality, visual appeal, and potential upgadability.

This envy is one of the best PCs I have owned or used, bar none. The build quality is exceptional with sturdy metal everywhere and yet the overall weight does not feel heavy. The keyboard is rewarding to press and responsive with effective space, an always underrated aspect of keyboards.
The 2-in-1 flip is a really useful feature once the bugs work themselves out. At first, there were a few instances when apps "became lost" when switching between the two. There were software updates and since a few of them, I have not noticed the issue again. It may, to some, feel like overkill on a 15.6 inch screen but the feature has useful features when out and about such as tenting to view videos. Screen brightness is fine for me as is the graphical output. Another plus for this unit is the sound from the B & O speakers. I was honestly surprised at the fullness of sound, though I normally use larger bluetooth speakers or headphones for everything. You may find yourself turning the sound down with this unit from time to time.
This AMD Ryzen 7 is the real deal. It flies through things and I will soon challenge it and the RAM to some light gaming. I have heard the fan literally 3 or 4 times in about a month so for regular everyday use with sometimes intense applications, cooling is not a problem.
If there was one complaint, it would be the dearth of ports. There are two 3.0 ports and one C. This is easily expandable, in addition to an RJ45, but another of either would have been ideal.
Overall, this unit is a terrific value. It would be very easy to forget that this is a sub-$1000 unit and I scored it for $750.

Once of the best Ryzen 4000 series laptops

I have now tested a few of these newer Ryzen 4000 series laptops and this, so far, probably comes out on top. Why?
Many of these newer and cheaper laptops have soldered RAM, which many of fans think this a bag thing for future proofing at just 8gb included. Really, it comes down to what your uses for a laptop is exactly...but as time goes on, more things use more RAM and that's a fact. This laptop has two slots which are up-gradable if you are willing to open it up. (Some screws are hidden under the rubber mold on the bottom.)
This also has a single NVME slot of which you can upgrade as well for faster speeds and more space.
Now for the processor...an 8 core mobile processor that clock speeds can get pretty high with such low wattage...for this price? Incredible. When I say this price, I'm talking about the sale price of which you can get this laptop or it's lesser 4500U option for hundreds of dollars cheaper. THAT'S what makes this a steal. This is by NO MEANS a gaming laptop, yet this thing can play games pretty decently, a big plus. Normally, and almost always, I have been team INTEL. But with these newer chips? I would not even think about purchasing an intel one with what you're getting performance wise for the price.
The overall build quality is solid with a FULL aluminum body all around. Because of this, the laptop is a little bit heavier than most of which some people might have a problem with...but for the trade off on this solid quality at around 4lbs? I think it's great.
The keyboard and keyboard lighting I think are great for what a laptop can provide. The ports on this laptop are also great and the Type C port can also charge the laptop if you have a 45w-65w+ charger. I was not able to test the port to see if it would work with video, but I think it will.
The only lacking part of this laptop, the reason I had to minus one star, is due to the screen. The touch screen itself is great and having the ability to fold the laptop in tablet mode, a cool function to have, but not practical to me because of it's size and weight and for the fact that I personally do not care much for tablet mode.
Back to the screen, this is a large gripe with a lot of users online who have voiced their comments about these laptops with less than stellar screens. If they had given a more bright screen with better color accuracy, say, an at least 300 nits screen over the 250 nits screen with 90%-100% SRGB color, people would have nothing to complain about. I would argue that you could give a 256GB SSD instead and a better screen and even with a slight price bump, people would GLADLY pay it.
Now that said, if you order this from HP directly, I believe you can customize a better screen option to include.
Speaking of HP itself, this company, along with almost all of them actually, have come a long long way in quality over the years, and as they should if they are paying attention to their customers. I normally would not have purchased an HP laptop many many years ago, but this one is solid.
I have tested both the 4500u option as well as the 4700u option and they're both great for the sale price.

I bought this laptop a while back to use as both my work machine and my main personal computer. The design and build quality are fantastic. It never has any lag or unexpected slow downs. And the battery almost always gets me through my 8-11 hour shifts using the screen at full brightness. The speakers are the best I've heard in a laptop. I love the webcam and microphone kill switch. (WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE DO THIS?) However, there are a couple of small issues that you should be aware of. HP's touch pads are hilariously awful and it regularly doesn't recognize any inputs on the bottom half of it. HP also felt the need to load up a $900+ laptop with bloatware which is frustrating to say the least. Weird bugs are a regular occurrence. Sometimes the fans decide not to kick on even though it gets too hot to touch. Bluetooth rarely works unless you connect immediately after booting up. Num lock likes to turn itself off for absolutely no reason, etc... A quick reboot always fixes these issues. That considered, it is still a great computer and I would definitely recommend it to a close friend.
